Torsten Bock |
Looking over Tove's shoulder, Torsten comments "Ah, scrolls! Not the deepest magic but of interest for sure. Let me look..." he reaches for the scrolls as Theo hands them to him to examine them more closely.
Spellcraft scroll #1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Spellcraft scroll #2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Perception potion #1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Perception potion #2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Perception potion #3: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Assuming that's separate checks for each item. I'll take the #1's if it should be one roll on each skill.
"Strange, this scroll seems to be 'prentice work. It gives some little resistance to effects on the mind and body for a minute. The other will take more examination.
"This potion though, the cold stony smell tells me it was made to see in utter darkness. I do not recognise the others though - has anyone experience with such?"
Jacobus Varadin |
Jacobus twist his face at the sight of the humanoid remains, "The worg was a good kill. One less danger in this area."
He took the potion flasks while leaving the scrolls to someone who had studied magic. A quick examination told him what the potions could be used for, "Keep you in a comfortable temperature for 24 hours (endure elements), protects you from chaos, and allows someone to see in the dark."
He added, "Let's bury these remains and keep moving. I don't feel like staying near the worg's lair come night."

And still having no clue, will cast read magic on it.

"This scroll will allow you to make a group that you are talking to give you their undivided attention (enthrall)"
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
As a side note, both scrolls are divine.
You exit the Worg's den and continue on with you exploration and mapping of the region undisturbed the remainder of the day. Finding a spot to camp is not too difficult either as you settle in for a slightly cool, but otherwise pleasant evening.
The night is uneventful, save for the changing of the guard between camp watches. You awake in the morning refreshed and ready to see what the new day brings.
Encounter? (5%): 1d100 ⇒ 92 - None
Where to? The Charter would put any further east outside your purview (at least for now). I would assume southwest (assuming you do not wish to return to Oleg's at the moment)?
Tove Hellstrom |
"May I see that?" Tove asks Ivo of the wooden symbol he finds among the remains.
As she takes the symbol she turns it over in her hands trying to identify the deity represented.
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
I see no reason to turn back yet, so I say we head southwest and keep to the plan.
Razarak Medvyed |
I am also good with going southwest, since we have more food left before we need return
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |
"Indeed, let us continue onwards. We may be able to find these berries for the Alchemist and return them quickly too ... did he say how long they would keep once they have been picked?"
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
You break camp and head out to the southwest. While a bit breezier than you would like, the weather is mostly pleasant as you continue though the mostly open plains of the northern reaches of the Greenbelt.
A light rain begins to fall in the afternoon, making things a bit chilly, but not terribly uncomfortable. Your work for the day done you settle into suitable campsite for the evening.
Encounter Chance - Day (10%): 1d100 ⇒ 81 - none
Encounter Chance - Night (5%): 1d100 ⇒ 46 - none
You awake, as well rested as you can be after a night camping, and are ready for a new day.
Please mark off sufficient rations to cover the PCs and any animals along with you. Which direction? West, southwest, or southeast? All are within your chartered area. West and southeast would continue through the plains. Initial scouting tells you that if you were to go to the southwest you would begin to encounter some low rolling hills.
Torsten Bock |
"I heard nothing from Bokken, but priestly magic is known to be able to purify such things. Between Tove and Jacobus one of them can surely call on divine power to keep the berries fresh.
"It is good to see that worg left no lasting fear in you Jacobus, that was a mighty bite. Onwards!"
Ninja'd
Torsten Bock |
After the night camping,
"Let us explore these hills to the southwest. It might take longer than these plains have so far and I would like to make it back to the trading post at the time we are expected."
Tove Hellstrom |
I'm not sure if you saw it DM but I rolled to identify the holy symbol from the worg's lair?
Also, Tove is running low on animal feed, is it okay to let Ros graze during the mornings and evenings or does she need to buy more grain?
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
That's what I get for embedding spoilers within spoilers. Grazing while in the plains is fine.
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
Looks like we can't afford the wand just yet but hopefully Oleg can order it in good faith that we will have amassed some more wealth by the time we return.
I suggest we split the healing supplies among those of you who can't heal yourselves, in case you need healing and I can't get to you.
I believe we had planned to purchase 60 days worth of trail rations, so each of us can add 10 days rations to our sheets. That should cover us for the planned 7 days of exploration, with a few days spare in case we run into trouble and can't get back.
Looks like you purchased 60 man-days worth of rations before you left Oleg's
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |
Am I able to do a survival check for the night just passed and every one from now on to try and forage for food?
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
Sure. Give me a survival check. Just remember that in order to forage, you will need to move at half speed which will slowdown your exploration progress.
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |
I was thinking of Rufus going hunting while we are all setting up camp each night, is that not allowed?
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
We can do that. Given the relatively short time frame I may adjust the DC of the survival check though.
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |
Rufus Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Not that it matters with that abysmal roll. I am assuming that the DC will now be 15 instead of 10?
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
The DC will be between 12 and 15 dependent on the terrain.
Rufus returned from his quick hunt empty pawed.
Jacobus Varadin |
Sorry GM but I think we may be screwing up the rations things. There's six of us so we all started with 10, which we bought from Oleg, and anything else we may have had. How many days has it been since we left Oleg's? Two or three?
With his bite wounds more or less healed, Jacobus was once more on top of his horse to continue exploring; he nods to Torsten, "The hills to the southwest sound fine. We have to do them sooner or later."
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
The party breaks camp and chooses to head out to the southwest, into the low rolling hills that make up a significant portion of the Greenbelt. Morning fog, particularly in the valleys, makes exploration a bit on the difficult side through the morning, but the fog is mostly burned away by mid-day, leaving a cool overcast day.
You nearly have considered it a completely uninteresting, boring day when Torsten notices an old lightning-struck oak tree stands atop a
low hill at this spot—the only tree in a two-mile radius, in fact. As you approach from the north, the tree looks eerily like a claw reaching for the clouds.

As you head to the southwest, it is the beginning of Day 4 away from Oleg's. You all should have consumed 3 days worth of food at this point.
Torsten Bock |
Torsten stops and stretches after pointing out the lightning-struck tree.
"A tree, not far to the south of Bokken's home. Could it be that it is hollow? We should approach cautiously if so, remembering how he thinks of his brother."

I wouldn't say strange, creepy yes. It's like a fiendish creature is trying to claw it's way out of the ground!"[/b] I remain mounted but carefully move towards the tree. My hand is resting on the handle of my sword and my eyes piercing the tree in case it suddenly tries to strike us.
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
As you approach the tree, I'll take survival checks from anyone who would like to make one.
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |

DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
In a hollow amid the tree’s roots on the north side, Razarak sees a section of earth there has been disturbed.
Hey Raz, when you get a chance, your character sheet needs to be updated. It's still showing your 1st level version.
Razarak Medvyed |
I will do that when I get back to my computer, back from my camping trip for the time being
"Hey a I think I found something, something might be buried here I think."
Tove Hellstrom |
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Tove warily approaches the tree, leaving her horse at the bottom of the hill and continuing carefully on foot, bow at the ready.
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
As the others approach the tree, Ivo notices what Razarak is talking about. Sure enough, it looks like there might be something buried within the roots of the old tree.
Jacobus Varadin |
"Wait, I see it. Is that a mound? A hole? Anyone got a shovel?"
Jacobus shook his head, "Not me but we should have brought one. next time."
He then pulled out an iron pot, "I can some dirt with this but someone is going to have to ply it loose."
He joked with Theo, "What about that wolf of yours? Aren't they supposed to be good at digging and burying stuff?"
Torsten Bock |
"I could prepare magic to deal with this in the morning, in an instant! But if we should rather start sooner I can sharpen a stick to break the earth." Torsten draws his dagger and looks at and around the tree for a branch to break off or pick up.
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
While there isn't really anything laying around the base of the tree, a part of the tree itself would be easy enough to break off to bust up the ground.
Theodore "Greyback" Logan |
I laugh at Jacobus' joke and then look at him to make sure it is a joke. I dismount next to the mound and pull off my shield, using it to scrape away the earth instead of a shovel.
Torsten Bock |
Torsten selects a branch, removes it and alters it to suit his purposes.
Craft, untrained: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 If any roll is required; I can't think of anything else that might apply.
Failing that his dagger may never be the same again as it gets used to break the earth instead.
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
It takes nearly twenty minutes to dig up, but through use of makeshift tools and persistence you unearth a cache wrapped in a heavy leather cloak.
I seems a fair amount of water has gotten to the cache containing a dagger, a wand , a silver ring, and a spellbook, but most of the contents will be just fine after being cleaned up a bit. One bit that did not do so well is a book that has been water damaged and has begun to mildew. Carefully paging through the book, it appears that there are still a few spells that would be able to be copied to a new text if desired.

Having no idea on the ring, he nonetheless nods, "This is a... good looking ring as well."

You spend the rest of the afternoon and into early evening exploring and mapping the hilly region, with very little to excite you. On the positive side, you are able to finds a series of hills that will work nicely as a wind break for your night's camp.
I'll take survival checks from anyone who wishes to forage/hunt for food. Otherwise, mark another days food off. There is still sufficient grass/plant life here for horses to graze.
Night's Encounter? (10%): 1d100 ⇒ 83
The night is pleasant, but the early morning weather takes a turn for the worse and you awaken to a chilly, drizzly morning.
Given your current team movement (35 ft), it will take another day to map the remainder of this hex. I trust that is what you'd like to do?
DM Talomyr - Kingmaker |
Yes, the hex map is up to date. When you went to deal with Kressel at the Thorn River camp you traveled straight there and did not take the time to explore along the way. (A forest hex will take two days to clear at your party's current speed) Revealed hexes that you have only traveled through and not mapped are marked with a white "T" on the map.
Torsten Bock |
The damaged spellbook engages Torsten quite thoroughly during his spare time. If there are any clues as to its ownership he takes a note of them. Disappointed by the lack of attention Strauch sneaks off to see if there is better food around.
