The town of Hammenholdt has been lucky. Prosperous from trade, the town has been able to afford peace as few can.

But its luck has run out and something from the darkest shadows now plagues the town.

Alrighty! Thank you for your submissions. I really liked what you guys came up with. So, without further ado, let's get down to business.

I will be busy this weekend moving, and as a result, I won't be starting the game until next week. The good news, however, is that you can spend this weekend getting things nailed down more. I know El Ronza's character isn't finished, but I like the country was submitted and I'm already getting all sorts of evil ideas.

Speaking of ideas, this little world of ours needs a name, and I was thinking about letting ya'll pick it. I have a lay of the land, so to speak, in my head, but if you want to work with each other and place your homes where you see fit, then go for it. Just make sure I know because I want to make a map after we get that squared away.

And in the interest of fairness, I'm going to post my answers to the questionnaire here.

Questionnaire:

1. How long have you been playing RPGs? What got you started?
Since April of 2011. I'd been wanting to try out DnD since high school, but that's when I went to my first gaming session at a local game shop.

2. What is your favorite character from fiction (This can include characters from modules and APs)?
Hmm, this is a tough one. I can't pick just one, but I have to say that "Ze Boiz" from Girl Genius are definitely up there.

3. What is your favorite character that you have created?
Gkirkhan (rhymes with jerkin) hands down. He's a six and a half foot tall bundle of booze loving, fight picking half-orc based off of the Jagers from Girl Genius. What's not to like?

4. What makes your character campaign unique?
I'd like to say the fact that I am building the world off of what the players come up with, but I stole the idea from Kobold Press's guide to world-building, sooooo...

5. What do you expect from me as a GM I expect from you as players?
I expect you to have fun and help me notice my mistakes. My job is to make sure you have fun, so let me know if I'm boring you to death instead.

6. What is your favorite color?
#112299 (That's a dark blue for those of you that aren't familiar with CSS hexadecimal colors.)

7. What do you think my favorite AP is? My favorite AP is:
A tie between Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne, and Jade Regent. Wrath of the Righteous would have been up here, but the last volume was just a bleh sammich on meh bread.

I'll do my best to answer any questions, but I may not be able to over the weekend.

Party Temptress, reporting in.

Just as a refresher, here is the Homeland I came up with.

Name: Swamp of Fell Lovers

Description: A long, narrow strip of wooded marshland that runs between the Human settlement of Dunmark and the Elven Citadel of Inthelares.

History: Originally called the Shadow Marsh, names so because no matter the time of day it always appeared to be twilight. It held little danger outside of the usual swamp wildlife that on occasion, would take the life of a traveler. Then around 427 years ago, a disagreement broke out between the two cities and several small skirmishes ensued.

During the final skirmish, each city’s most powerful wizard stepped forth to dual and end the conflict once and for all. This contest lasted three days and raged all over the marsh. On the third day, each wizard cast a powerful offensive spell at the other. The two spells collided in midair, causing a massive and blinding explosion of arcane energy. When the smoke cleared, there stood seven succubae where the mystical burst originated. Somehow, the two wizards had managed to detonate their spells right on top of a small rift between the planes, and consequently allowed these demons through. The succubae quickly dispatched the wizards and tried to set out from the swamp. They met a heavier resistance than they had anticipated and retreated back into the marsh. It is there the demons, known as the Seven Sisters, reside, snatching the occasional traveler brave enough to venture within, trying to avoid several days journey to circumvent the swamp. Some stories tell of the Sisters pleasuring themselves with their captives then killing them for the sheer joy of it.

It is unknown why the demons have not left the swamp, and although several groups of Paladins have gone within to eliminate the monsters, none have returned. The people of Dunmark have even attempted to burn down the swamp land to flush out the Sisters, but for some reason flames, neither mundane nor magical, had any effect on the trees. Some speculate this is due to some lingering magic from the wizards dual, while others claim it to be the Seven Sisters trying to stay in hiding, no one knows for sure.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Hello there. I am at work right now and have no to go through your stuff in detail, I'll just skim over it for now. Plus I have spent so much work on different characters in the past week that I need a moment to get into my own character.

Anyway, I am happy to be in the group and looking forward to the action. I'll book the RSS feeds of this thread in my email program so, as soon as anything comes up I can respond. (In my experience a brief and clear response right now is better than a long and detailed one the day after tomorrow.)

A tiefling's gonna be interesting. As Angelkin Rayla has reservations regarding tieflings.

El Ronza here, checking in. Thanks for choosing me, even with an incomplete submission - I didn't get my fluff done today due to work, but I'll get there - though your mention of "all sorts of evil ideas" has me worried!

In the meantime, here's my questionnaire, just because I didn't do it earlier:

Spoiler:

1. How long have you been playing RPGs? What got you started?
I played two sessions in high school, around 2006, but got into tabletop seriously after reading a few handbooks and deciding it would be fun to try. I ran my first campaign last February, and have been hooked since.

2. What is your favorite character from fiction (This can include characters from modules and APs)?
I'm drawn to Dorian Gray (The Picture of Dorain Gray, Oscar Wilde) and Your Humble Narrator, Alex (A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess). Lately I've had a soft spot for Major Major Major Major (Catch-22, Joseph Heller). But probably my favourite character ever would be Fezzik from The Princess Bride, as portrayed by Andre the Giant. He was completely endearing and heartwarming, and I still feel all warm and fuzzy when I watch The Princess Bride. Wait, is it too late for me to just say "the entire cast of The Princess Bride?

3. What is your favorite character that you have created?
That would have to be Horatio Alexander Aldebrandt, who I'm sure you remember well!

4. What makes your character unique?
I'm not entirely sure yet, to be perfectly honest. She hasn't spoken to me yet.

5. What do you expect from me as a GM?
I expect you to have fun, and to help us have fun. I expect you to be fair, willing to bend rules at times for the sake of story, and not kill my character in the first round of the first combat!

6. What is your favorite color?
Blue! No, wait, yellooooooooooooooooooooooow!

7. What do you think my favorite AP is?
Not fair now that you've answered it, but I would have said Rise of the Runelords, because you seem like a pretty classic high-fantasy type of guy.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Black Dow reporting in. Appreciate the selection as well... myself and Drayen have played a couple of duos before (these characters are reworkings of much beloved first pbp duo)

Will look over my submission and iron out any creases/add new wrinkles... Will also put my head together with Drayen regards fleshing out the Northern homeland of Kaldrnord - "Land of the Cold North".

Our culture are the Þursfyrðar (lit: Giant People) - basically giant blodded Viking/Northfolk and we'll buld on them as well. We're drawing on influence from Ulfen/Norse/Kellid/Inuit culture and myth for these guys.

DMSalsa:

Would it be possible for the Þursfyrðar to have both Common and Giant (Jǫtunn) as our starting languages?

Also here's the original thread where our characters first appeared (just to give you an idea of the dynamic we'll be looking to recreate :)

Arythain/Kylar checking in. Thanks as well for including me. I'm crunched for time today, but I'll get my alias created this afternoon or early evening and come back with a proper intro post.

Heeeeere's Kylar!

Hello everyone. We seem to have a lot of half-breeds here. That ought to make Kylar feel more at ease.

Also, looking forward to seeing if we'll have any more of a hand in the world building. I do a lot of it myself - I'm in the process of creating a homebrew world for eventual Pathfinder DM'ing here on these boards. Kylar's birth nation of Nashec is heavily based on a nation from that world.

Also Skane, you're just going to have to imagine the umlauts and such when Kylar speaks to you guys... I happen to know most of the alt codes, but it slows typing down quite a bit. ;)

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Well, you could just write it as it comes and copy and paste his name once you're done. :D That's simpler than using those codes imho.

Rayla isn't exactly a half celestial, only a 32nd.

Details. :)

Also, DM-Salsa: since we cannot begin until next week, could you perhaps share a bit of the lead-in with us? Wouldn't hurt to have some time to figure out our hooks into this particular story, or perhaps if any of our characters know other previously (aside from the obvious duo). If you have time, of course.

Hey all! We had our monthly software release last night, hence the late arrival.

As Skane said, this is not our first go 'round with partnering (Ah, Hakon and Abitan...), even with this particular pair of vikings. I expect this to be great fun for all of us. Yes, Björn is the party's enforcer of fun. I think the picture bears out this truth.

Kaldrnorð is our homeland and Ísáinheim is the largest settlement in the region. This 'home on the ice river' is famed for it's river; both that it remains frozen year round and for a unique breed of remorhaz. The ice river is solid most of the year save for the high summer when it can warm enough that the ice will crack and break under the weight of a full grown Þursfyrðar. Adding to the danger, and the thrill for local hunters, the river is home to a strange offshoot of remorhaz.

Some more regional fluff:

These aquatic beasts constantly move through the ice of the river using their internal fires to heat the armour plates on their backs to melt the ice, providing the water they need to breathe. As with other remorhaz, they are solitary creatures, save for in the deepest days of winter when they will search out others of their kind to mate. Coming together in groups of up to a dozen, they writhe in the ice forming mating balls. These balls of remorhaz melt the ice into large spheres of water. In large groups, the water can boil through the surface ice creating geysers of superheated water which explode into plumes of snow, or even ice leaving towering sculptures in their wake. The unwary are sometimes caught in these plumes, instantly frozen or worse, falling through the brittle ice into the undulating mass of superheated scales and maws.

Young are born in the summer when there is free flowing water running under the ice. They swim in the frigid waters throughout the short summer months, learning to regulate their internal heat to prepare themselves for the icy autumn.

Yeah, a little opening scene would be nice. Doesn't have to be anything big, just something to allow us to get to know each other.

Rayla is usually a lot on the move. She hunts and is hunted by devils and their consorts. She might have traveled as far as to þursfyrðar, even though her own homeland is temperate to subtropical. She would get along pretty well with the hearty and direct people there and has little problem with the climate there (cold resistance 5). But, since we don't know where the story starts... that would be very helpful.

She is not above fighting orcs, either - she's young (well, 74 is young for an aasimar) and needs the money. She travels a lot from town to town, see whether she can earn a few bucks by solving monster problems. Staying in one place too long may prove unhealthy, though.

Rayla, is it a fair bet you've never been to my neck of the woods then? I mean, a swamp occupied by seven succubi doesn't sound like a good place for you to visit.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

That's possible... however, Rayla is direct but not suicidal, she wouldn't deliberately confront a succubus alone, let alone seven of them. But maybe she didn't know what she was facing and just scouting the area.

Let's try a Knowledge (Planes) roll to see what she knows about succubi:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

(That's +1 Rank, +2 Int, +2 Angelkin)
YES! She definitely wouldn't want to confront a succubus unless with a paladin and some clerics at her side and a good protection from enchantments.

So, maybe she got a hint that many adventurer's were lost there and that there were stories about beautiful women. Might by fey, might be ghosts... or a succubus. She carefully snuck into the area, tried to keep her head low, maybe find a bit of treasure from her predecessors (she has no other source of income than little adventures and mercenary jobs)... and met you. Not knowing what you are she didn't want to attack, especially considering the possibility that you might be an enchanter or some kind of trap. So the two of us went on playing a bit hide and seek, trying to estimate each other, but eventually you pinned my down and addressed me directly. Possibly from a tactical superior positions, since the advantage of knowing the environment was yours. What you did or said then would be up to you.

If she found out that you're a direct descendant of a succubus in first generation she might file you under alu-demon which is good, since it would mean you're not necessarily evil but still very powerful. If she takes you for a half-fiend however...

Or maybe Rayla ended up in a swamp pit and you helped or out or so...

Heh. Usually when I hear a line like "young and needs the money," 'fighting orcs' is not what comes up...

Kylar travels a bit (left his home country where he's the target of a lot of bigotry, and hasn't settled down anywhere else) so he may have come across other characters here or there. He probably takes up with mercenaries every now and again seeing as that's what his parents did.

I also imagine him as a sort of "Murder She Wrote" with magic, unraveling various little plots by local magic users who are trying to screw around with people. Probably fairly low key so far, seeing as he's level 1.

Well, I didn't say but what means she usually engages orc or what she understands in a 'monster problem', did I? ;) No, sleazy comments aside, it all boils down to some 'You show me yours, I show you mine.' And that means her greatsword, of course.

EDIT: My, you're giving me ideas. Now an extension my comment "Or maybe Rayla ended up in a swamp pit and you helped or out or so..." popped up in my mind that had something to do with mud wrestling.

Welp, I hope Salsa is ready to GM a softcore* porn adventure. Knowing RPG'ers, it won't be even close to the first one...

Come to think of it, one of the campaigns I'm reading through on these boards has a character extremely focused on sleeping with anything two-legged that comes within 100 feet. So yeah, not even a first for these boards.

Edit: Softcore because a little part of me dies even considering otherwise...

Just an FYI. I will likely not be on until Sunday night CDT. Going to be busy moving.

I can tell how this will start though. Each of you arrives in Hammenholdt throughout the day. The adventure officially starts when everyone gets in and finds a place to sleep for the night. You can know each other beforehand if you wish. Just let me know so I can put that in the first post.

I'm thinking, we probably would have met at my mother, Esmerelda's, cottage. Most everyone who ventures into the swamp stops by for protection potions and I decided to go with you, because I was looking for adventure.

Also, you being a woman, would allow her to flirt with any males we'd come across and you wouldn't be jealous, hopefully.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Your mother is... a demon. As in "incarnation of evil". While Rayla's archenemies are devils, demons aren't much better. Rayla doesn't deal with demons...

I am sorry, I don't want to be destructive on your suggestions, but that just doesn't work for me. But it's not absolutely necessary that we already know each other - we might simply meet at the location.

Would it help to know that she disguises herself as an old crone named Hady?

Challenge: I bet none of you know where I got the name Hady from.

The novel, actually. I read it again a few months ago.

I'm still working on story, but I'm thinking Helena's just been travelling alone since her 'awakening' in the fey-ridden forests of Tairesia. Being mostly blind, though, she'd have probably wanted some company.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Well, some of us might have arrived in a trade caravan... Rayla as escort others for protection. I don't know what Helena is like, but Rayla might have been very interested in her, given their common trait, a certain connection to the divine and might even have talked to Helena (though with a for Rayla unusual plea for discretion) about her own dreams and the guidance of her ancestor that helped her through dark times.

Kylar would have been more difficult. She has deep respect for elves, but still her relationship to elves is problematic.

If I may quote a sentence from the SRD:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-aasimar wrote:
Elven courtiers sometimes dismiss aasimars as unsophisticated, and criticize them for relying on natural charm to overcome faux pas.

This sentence applies to Rayla more than many other Aasimar. Her life span is relatively long and though she's not as old as an elf, her life experience so far is more similar to that of an elf than a human. However, her experience lead her to pretty opposed views: She pays little head for flighty customs and conventions but always looks for her own truth, always defines herself in disregard what others may think about it. Elves in turn grow up in a highly complex society where everyone is long-lived, naturally interacting in a highly complex way with subtle variations that one can only learn by having been a teenager for at least 40 years among the same.

So it seems plausible that her relation to Kylar would be respectful, friendly, but relatively cool. However, for all her lack of subtlety, Rayla isn't dumb and she does know remarkable much about the planes, which goes down to having a different view on the world itself, not just knowing but realizing that it is but one of many.

I have no idea where Hady came from but my first association, especially given Kylar's addition, Helena's implicit reference to Greek mythology and your heritage was a song by British pagan goth band:
Inkubus Sukkubus - Kiss of Hades [on YouTube] [on Spotify]

I got the name from this song. Every time my Dad and I hear it, we can't help but think of the witch from Pumpkinhead.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne will definitely have done some mercenary work, its pretty reasonable that the Northmen have come across Kylar before and upon hearing he is on the road and heading toward Hammenhold it would likely be impetus enough for the jotunn-blodded pair?

Regards interaction within the group - will be fun. Based on how Bjorn previously dealt with the fairer sex I'm looking forward to it lol.

Will have a good overhaul of my lad this evening...

Looking forward to the game - very eclectic and interesting group you've assembled DMSalsa.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Well, Rayla could have joined you. We might escort a handful of traders along the road as I've suggested earlier.

What do you mean by "how Björn has dealt with the fairer sex"? By the brief description I get the impression of bear of a man (literally) with impressive physique and a lot self esteem, who is jovial, friendly and hearty... not sure where I put a charisma score of 7 (How is that even possible?) in this context, but we shall see.

I don't really see any references to women there, however. Is there a story somewhere I don't know about?

Female Human Oracle (life) 4 | AC 19, T 11, FF 18 | hp 8/31 | CMD 16 | F +4, R +3, W +4 | Init +2| Perc +4 | low-light vision, darkvision 30 ft | Channel Positive Energy 3/5 | 1st-level spells 6/7 | 2nd-level spells 1/4

This is going to be interesting... the other two women in the party are more beautiful and outgoing than I pictured Helena being, yet she's the one with the highest charisma. Hmm.

This is what I have of story so far. I'll keep working on it, but since I don't have much faith in my own writing, I'll leave this here for others to look over.

Spoiler:
Helena’s mother, Heather, was an alchemist, living in the small town of Lenwood, near one of Tairesia’s many deep forests. Townsfolk came to her almost daily for the herbal remedies she brewed, and she greeted everyone with warm words and a kind smile. By contrast, her husband, Fasin, was a logger, an impatient, taciturn man who nevertheless loved her deeply.

When Heather was heavily pregnant with their first child, Fasin was killed in a logging accident. Or so it seemed – in truth, he’d been working in one of the groves where the veil to the First World was particularly thin, and the fey had taken offense at the threat his work posed to their lands. The tree he was cutting fell on him, killing him instantly – and in the moment of his death, a curse was placed on his bloodline. In Heather’s womb, her child’s eyes ceased developing. When Helena was born into the world, blind and screaming, Heather was devastated.

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

Charisma has always been a funny attribute in D&D/Pathfinder. It is supposed to sum up physical attractiveness, "inner spirit," strength of character, as well as... flowery language? And a few other things. Such are the limits of the system.

Perhaps you trade on an air of mystery and a way with words, Helena.

Kylar's 8 charisma is supposed to represent a certain aloofness and a sharp tongue. He's friendly enough with people he knows, though taciturn.

Female Human Oracle (life) 4 | AC 19, T 11, FF 18 | hp 8/31 | CMD 16 | F +4, R +3, W +4 | Init +2| Perc +4 | low-light vision, darkvision 30 ft | Channel Positive Energy 3/5 | 1st-level spells 6/7 | 2nd-level spells 1/4

It's a hard one to pin down. I've played high- and low-charisma characters in different ways. My gnome sorcerer is bouncy and bubbly and likeable, despite being bonkers. My bard is ridiculously good-looking and uses it to his advantage, as well as knowing the right words for every occasion and delivering them with heaping self-confidence. My evil summoner was arrogant and had a strong, domineering personality, incredibly persuasive - like a used car salesman. Of the three, I only picture my bard as being particularly good-looking - charisma is more than looks, after all.

My low-charisma characters are a gunslinger and a witch. The witch is a tiefling, and cripplingly shy. She barely speaks above a whisper, and is embarrassed whenever she makes a suggestion. She's also incredibly meek, and gets worked up over tiny things. My gunslinger is loud and outgoing, and quick to laugh and joke, with an indomitable spirit and bravery - but she's crass, swears like a sailor (which she is) and has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth at inopportune moments. She has 10 charisma, but I really imagine it being lower.

The mysterious air is probably the approach I'll take with Helena - alluring, but aloof; sometimes seeming to be on a different plane of reality. A kind of enigma that draws attention.

I don't see a problem with that. You simply have an atmosphere of mystery in all you say or do, or by your mere presence.

While Delilah and Rayla may draw more attention and create a more lasting impression than the average person, compared to you we're funny little girls at best.

I never really create low charisma characters, because I like them to be at least average when dealing with people.
Of the characters here on the board, there are two with which I still have appications running...

Lluvia is not particularly good looking, but an average elf. She has a score of 12, though... she has been a diplomat once and is good with understanding and dealing with people. At the same time she is a widow and a somewhat dark character... I am really proud of this character, imho it's the second best story I ever wrote and I don't have the best anymore.

Devana is radiantly beautiful, but she is also cold and unemotional, has difficulties of expressing what feelings. In the consequence she earned her nickname "Snow Queen" and her charisma score of 10.

Will let Drayen explain in more detail - but basically he flirted constantly with the Varisian gypsy harrow reader bard in our party. Was a comical courtship but he and Rianna actually were married... Rest assured nothing sinister merely barbaric innuendo and a misplaced notion that all women should find him an irresistible lol.

Regards the personality/comeliness elements of Charisma - Skäne's decent CHA (12) reflects more his strong personality as he'll be a pretty surly individual... Bjorn is jovial and hearty, but will likely be damn intimidating at first. He is the proverbial wildman whose likely to put more cultured noses out of joint. As his namesake the big(ger) fella is a force of nature.

I'll be posting later tonight, after I reread my notes and make some additions to them. I'll also be reading through this tread to see if anyone agreed to come in together, besides Bjorn and Skane.

Sorry for the wait. I hope the game is worth it.

And we're live.

I'll post information as it comes up in the info space. For now, I need to be up early in the morning, so I'mm signing off.

Just some a small suggestion...

Instead of pseudo language when you speak your nordic language it might be simpler if you posted a Google translation into some Scandinavian language - Danish, Norwegian or Swedish. For someone who actually speaks one of those languages that would look extremely clumsy, but as long no one does it would look pretty convincing while being less work to create.

As a little example, the last paragraph, tranlated using tranlate.google.com into Swedish.

PS: I'd discourage the use of Norwegian, though, because in Norwegian "Björn" is written "Bjørn".

That's the way I'm going - using Icelandic from Google translate. We've tried using other translator's before and they give varying results... Ideally we'd be using Old Norse to be honest, but I'm not as up on it as I'd like.

Thought with the basterdised version of the North tongue - is that our boys speak their language first and Common second... so the odd word would be too difficult to translate.

I work for a Norwegian company and some of our guys oft do this :)

Going forward whatever works best is fine with me.

Oh, I didn't know that Icelandic had such fancy symbols in their language. I was completely convinced you made that up. :D

1. Why are you reading other people's spoilers?

2. As all Gaelic speakers know circles belong over consonants, not vowels.

3. Yeah, we've been using Icelandic for awhile for these characters. It's because Icelandic is the closest to old Norse. (Iceland's relative isolation kept the language from significantly evolving/devolving over the centuries much like how the inhabitants of Tangier Island in Virginia still speak English with an Elizabethan accent.)

4. I was just going to use the Icelandic word for northern as the name of the language. Funnily enough, northern in Icelandic is 'northern', so it sounds flat to me. I'm sure Skane will have something nifty for us to call it.

I am sorry, I didn't take as something horribly secret, but more of a means to keep things separate.

Nah, I was just teasing. I've learned to PM if I want something secret.
