You level when you have the XP, which includes RP XP. Everyone levels at the same time. When you level you get everything immediately *except* for spells and powers (healing bursts, bloodline powers, etc). You need the appropriate nights sleep to regain spells and powers and new spell levels and powers.

did something hapen with our DM?

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

No. Some out-of-town friends dropped in unexpectedly and we have spent a couple of days showing them around. They left about an hour ago. I'll have a post up in a little bit. Sorry.

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

I may not make a post tomorrow evening. We made an appointment with the vet to put down our 15 1/2 year old dog tomorrow late afternoon, and I just know that my wife is going to be a wreck for the evening.

Thank you for you posts. We brought her to the vet, and after one last walk around the parking lot brought her in. We said our goodbyes and the vet gave her a shot and she was gone. My wife was a complete wreck, and my adult son (who has two dogs) was a bit of a wreck. Even me, the grouchy old bastard of the family was tearing up.

Again, thanks for the posts.

Got back in town very late last night, and being without a computer really stinks. I will have a post up in 4-5 hours. I have local errands that have to be done early this morning.

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

The wife and I are campers, although with a thirty foot trailer, heat, A/C, stove, bed, TV, etc. it has all the comforts of home. One exception is we have internet access thru the land line phone, but as we are not near the phone switch panel in the campground sometimes, especially in bad weather, the internet is spotty or non existent.

As this is Memorial Day weekend, we are leaving in an hour or so, and it is raining at home, and is raining at the campground and will be probably thru late Sunday, so depending on how bad the rain stays, I may not have internet access. If it is too spotty at the camper, I'll try and go to the camp store where I can leech off the public access, but I am just letting you know that I may be off line till Monday evening.

Should not be, but possible.

bonus feat Thunder and Fang

thunder and fang:
Thunder and Fang (Combat)

You have mastered the ancient Shoanti Thunder and Fang fighting style, allowing you to fight with increased effectiveness when wielding an earth breaker and klar.

Prerequisite: Str 15, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (earth breaker), Weapon Focus (klar)

Benefit: You can use an earth breaker as though it were a one-handed weapon. When using an earth breaker in one hand and a klar in your off hand, you retain the shield bonus your klar grants to your Armor Class even when you use it to attack. Treat your klar as a light weapon for the purposes of determining your two-weapon fighting penalty.

Normal: An earth breaker is a two-handed weapon, preventing the use of a klar in one hand without imposing penalties for using the earth breaker one-handed. A klar can be used either as a one-handed weapon or a shield; it does not grant a bonus to AC during rounds in which it is used as a weapon.

I think for cantrips I am going to take flare and prestidigitation.

I am having trouble picking a 1st level spell. Here's my short list; thoughts/suggestions fellow players?

Quote:

Alarm - Makes story sense she'd learn this, to protect areas or give them the jump on someone who's passed. Con: Somewhat circumstantial, not useful in active dungeoneering or combat

Comprehend Languages - Will come in handy, makes sense for archeologist. OTOH, Sezira already has it and anyone else in the party can also learn and I think some have also considered taking it.

Detect Secret Doors: Also makes sense for an archeologist, but also not the most exciting of spells and it's one of those ones where you have to hope to cast it when it will actually be useful.

Ear-Piercing Scream: Decent ranged attack, which Misha doesn't otherwise have.

Expeditious Retreat: Definitely has its uses, especially since we're all encumbering ourselves a bit at the moment and may need a burst of speed we can't otherwise get.

Feather Fall: Not used often, but usually when you have occasion to use it, you don't regret having taken it

Feather Step: Useful in mountainous/cavernous area for movement

Liberating Command: Useful if we find more prisoners or get imprisoned or grappled. Some limits to its use, i think.

Remove Fear: has its uses, appropriate to Misha's wish to be a fearless adventurer. Not the most exciting of spells.

Timely Inspiration: Basically gives a retroactive bonus to a failed save or roll. So like, if you fail by 1-3 and Misha casts this spell, you could then succeed. (Misha can't take the similar spell Saving Finale because it is performance dependent, and Misha as an archeologist does not have bardic performance)

@Misha: Considering the circumstances, I can't say I know for sure which the best one to take is, but since each and every one of the characters are now aware how dangerous the area is, you could easily justify adding Ear Piercing scream for a little more oomph. Otherwise, I'd go for something that would be good to have. I personally like something that would help us in an emergency or something, like Feather Fall or something. I hate when I feel like I could be better prepared for something, personally.

as we are a bit heavy on melee and sometimes we cant seem to reach our target as fast as we like to maybe Ear-Piercing Scream is a good option when you cant seem to reach your target!

for the same reason I need to get a composite longbow some time!

on the other heand Timely inpiration sounds a cool wannehave! but its so situational and im not a fan on situational tidbits

@All - I need to pick a combat style for Rikar's bonus feats - we're not very strong on ranged attacks, so I could go for archery. But he spends much more time in melee, and going for two-handed weapon would make him even more effective at that. Any thoughts on the matter?

@Misha - Unlike Saving Finale, Timely Inspiration only affects attack rolls or skill checks, so it's not as useful as getting help with a saving throw. Given that, I'd say go with Ear-Piercing Scream (the daze effect could be helpful, and the spell scales pretty nicely). As you say, many of the others on your list are situational - probably makes more sense to pick them up later, or buy some scrolls when we can.

Two handed fighting really only needs power attack, and maybe furious focus.

Getting the archery feats for free and without prerequisites is pretty sweet for the old switch hitter. Maybe grab quickdraw and get to swinging.

Well, as tempted as I was by going straight-up 2HW, I'm going with the archery combat style. So - Rapid Shot or Point-Blank Shot? Rapid Shot is probably more flexible, so will likely go with that. I don't expect to get much use out of Precise Shot, since if there's melee, I'll prbably be in it. Same probably applies to Point-Blank Shot.

So, aside from my combat style feat, here's are Rikar's changes:

+1 to Stealth, Perception, Survival, Climb, Knowledge (nature), Diplomacy, Handle Animal

+12 HP

+2 to Fort and Reflezx saves

+1 BAB

Male Human (part Shoanti) Fighter 2/Paladin3 | Init +4 | Perc +4 | AC 20 / T 12 / FF 18 | HP 54/54 | Saves F +11/R +7/W +6

isnt there a feat that acts like powerattack for archery?

problem with rapid shot its a full round and when i think its good to do full rounds with a bow i think you are more than likley gooing to do move/shoot stuff

so i sugest the ranged powerattack or 2 arrows in 1 attack feat as they are more flexible dont know if you can get those yet tho

Yeah, deadly aim is the feat you're thinking of.

Rapid shot is great as an opening salvo. I need a round or so to prep for melee combat, so that extra couple of arrows can be a good addition to the damage dealt.

Then, when the baddy closes in, we close up ranks and bash him down.

Rikar,

I really would think about grabbing Precise Shot, for two reasons: do not always assume you are gonna be in melee if you're close. Just look back at our fight map of the last fight -- we are going to be in a LOOOONG dungeon with lots and lots of narrow corridors. You may not be able to get into melee even if you want to, and then you will absolutely be kicking yourself that you do not have Precise Shot--that -4 penalty is brutal. This way you can just shoot through giant Borris and hit the bad guy at the other side.

Point Blank Shot is also nice and if you think you are going to take any archery feats not on your Ranger Bonus, ABSOLUTELY take this feat at this or third level, as PBS is pretty much prerequisite for all the archery feats. That bonus to attack and damage is also nice--as low as it is, it has still made a failed attack a success for me when I've played archers as well as for other archer players I've played with.

Rapid Shot, meh. Better at high levels when your BAB is higher and you're more likely to be positioned to full attack. Also after you get PBS, so if you Rapid Shot at close range, your penalty to hit is effectively halved.

Were I you, I'd take Precise at 2nd and Point Blank at 3rd. I am not you however, and trust your judgment no matter what you do.

==

As for me, points taken, so I think I will take Ear Piercing Scream.

i think Misha is Right

Precise shot is gooing to be usefull alot of times in narow coridors our last encounter was an exelent example!

But I do think full round attacks for rikar is gooing to be a waste more than it is not so i would defenetly recomend Precise shot and deadly aim for him as both can be used with a standart action!

if Rikar doesnt mind using ranged more often he would defenetly be a force to be reckoned with if he had all the tipicle ranged feats and a composite Longbow with his STR LOLZ! But ofcourse its his choice and all is good!

I on the other hand wil be swinging my Earthbreaker from now on !

@Misha - very nice case for Precise Shot, I'll go with that.

I see Rikar as more melee-focused than ranged, so will probably mostly get archery feats as part of my ranger combat style, with the possible exception of Deadly Aim.

And having experienced my ranger in my RL game getting turned to stone this weekend, along with the entire rest of his party, in the second book of Carrion Crown, I've become more interested in feats that will boost my saves.

On the question of what to do with Sunshine, our trusty mule: I think we should send her back to Meadowvale. We're not doing it to help the folks we rescued - if anything, they're helping us by taking her so we don't have to worry about her. We can't get her past the very first part of the tunnels, and it's only a matter of time before some creature decides to eat her. I could certainly be wrong, but I think it's unlikely we're going to keep coming back out this way every now and then to ferry vast amounts of treasure back to town. I think we'll find places to rest inside, and perhaps other ways out of the mountain, and Sunshine won't be where we need her anyway - if she's still alive.

Yeah, she was useful to get us to the mountain and it was hopeful we could get her further, since mine tunnels usually have to cart vast quantities of stuff up via cart or whatever, but if we can't get her any further past the first level, she becomes a liability, and we just have to worry if she gets killed and our stuff taken. IRL mules and donkeys are pretty damn mean if cornered but I don't know if that holds up versus fantasy monsters. :)

Giving her to Cormac and Rann gives them transportation and additional assistance--she can also carry a rider if Rann is too weak to go too far, and gives us a convenient way to write her out. I think it was worth a shot for me to take her along, but I'm also willing to admit when it's not working out the way I hoped.

At the same time, I can understand some folks wanting to keep the pack mule. So if others have thoughts, let's hear them. (Just bear in mind the mule, her tack, and her food was my character's personal expense, for whatever weight that holds.)

If we do send away the mule...

One thing is I am not sure how much of the 21 days' worth of rations we have used. Misha had a week's worth of food for herself that was not part of the gift from the temple--I've removed her week's worth from my gear list, but not the 21 days' worth extra. I don't know who already had food they would have brought and eaten first before the extra rations were tucked into.

Hopefully we will in the not too distant future find a handy haversack or some such.... or even a friendly floating disk or mount spell (something bards don't get unfortunately)... so we don't have to carry as much stuff. Misha's an archeologist, part of her curse is always wanting to carry more than she is able. ;) (In a past tabletop incarnation, she was constantly trying to press porters into her service. :) ) I'm okay with Misha being encumbered with the extra gear _I_ bought for her till she finds another way of carrying stuff, but we do need to find a way to carry along the party's communal stuff: rope, spelunking kit, and whatever of the 21 pounds of food we have left. We can probably hide away extra supplies and go back for it as needed to an extent, as we did with them and Sunshine earlier, but we don't want to leave it all behind either.

We should, if we're nice people, also send Cormac and Rann back with some of the food if we can spare it.

Ok, everyone has leveled up. Let us carry the conversation over in the game thread. Make a decision about Sunshine, and about what you are going to do when you get back into the mines, then down the ladder, etc.

I would like to be able to post something tomorrow night, or Thursday at the latest.

I'm paying attention but I don't feel led to respond until the rest of the party has weighed in (Josef, Redona, Sezira).

I agree with getting rid of sunshine for its own safety. I'll go ahead and put something on the other board.

Hello all - just wanted to let you know that I will be away Sunday through Wednesday, and in all likelihood without computer access the entire time. So I'll be jumping back in Thursday of next week - feel free to bot me as needed.

I'm ready to move on when everyone else is. I'm assuming based on the feedback so far that Sunshine and some food is going with the NPCs.

Ok then lets get a m,ove on already !! ;)

Ugh, I am having the hardest time finding time to remember to check everything, including here to post. I just figured I'd post permission to bot if I manage to not post fast enough for people's taste, though that may have been happening anyway. I just wanted you to know it's fine with me.

If you want advice, pick a time you're usually going to be online, and check at that time every day (excepting unexpected times you're traveling,e tc. of course). Put it on a google calendar or whatever if that helps.
