Agree. We got surprise on them, but then they seem to have jumped up without us getting AOOs on them and attacked, like they surprised us too. ?

I believe our surprise acriob was a coup de grace which is a full round action, and can't be completed during a single action surprise. Just my 2 cents

Cherias the Kitling |

Can't make an AoO without a weapon. Neither Mel nor Cherias had a weapon at hand to take that AoO, and everyone else was at least 10 ft away. Seems to me that everyone began the standard action of "Begin a full-round action" in the surprise round, said full-round action being a CdG. The vamps who either beat our initiative, or a perception check, or something, managed to stop being helpless and were no longer valid CdG targets, so it failed, and then they got up and attacked. Those that didn't beat the initiative (or whatever check it was) weren't able to react fast enough to become non-helpless before they were staked. Or, wait, do wooden stakes count as a weapon? Seems like they do. Maybe we should have gotten AoOs when they stood up.

Cherias the Kitling |

There's stats for it. Doesn't appear to be.

I personally would not consider a wooden stake to be a weapon, but I'm not the DM here. We are also assuming they were surprised. They could've been very, very sneaky. We didn't exactly stealth in.
EDIT: Although, it looks like the rules are clear on the stake. Interesting.

Segang |

I am good with any call, but do like to understand. If they stood AND we were not flat footed we should get AOOs, unless squeezing prevents that. And maybe they got surprise attacks as we were expecting, or at leaf hoping they were sleeping. Heck I was hoping they were not home. :)

DM NomadSage |

To have things make more sense, I'll retcon their initiative to the end of the round, so everyone will have a turn before they go again.
Thus... Initiative Order: Melainthe [20], Cherias [16], Seren, Segang [13], Absinthe [7], Vampires [1]
The two were aware and awake, and were waiting to attack. I didn't think about the stakes as weapons, but fair's fair. Cherias and Mel both get AoOs as their opponents get up.
So, if you haven't already done so, you can post actions for round 1.

Cherias the Kitling |

I don't expect to hit, anyway, but it's worth a try.
Stake attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
In the unlikely event that it hits: 1d4 - 2 ⇒ (4) - 2 = 2
Cherias steps back, and winces as a bruise appears on his face where the apparent vampire had struck Melianthe. 5 HP cured on Mel (currently 19 HP), 5 HP damage to Cherias (39 HP). 5ft step to C6.
"May the grace of Arshea lay you low!" A burst of warmth floods the tiny room from Cherias's body. Channelling to harm. DC 17 to halve damage.
Channel: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 4) = 15

Segang |

Oh, sorry. Not sure if Segang was entitled to an AOO or not. If not, please disregard. Also I believe that an enemy has to be helpless to use the stake, right?
Stake on one hand, Segang swings at the creature as it stands in its coffin.
AOO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 111d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
As he realizes they are in a serious fight Segang enters his controlled rage, drops the stake, pulls his spear, and attacks the enemy farthest from the light.
spear: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 281d8 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16 Spear is not silver. I am hoping that the difference after DR is still better with a 2 handed weapon over the silver weapon, but am not sure if or how much DR applies. No one has knowledge Religion?

Cherias the Kitling |

I rolled and got an 11. I presume that wasn't enough for Cherias to recognize any differences between these things and normal vampires.

Segang |

I think its 5+CR so if a spawn I think you should know. But its 10+CR for less common enemies. I have no idea how to classify creatures as far as how common they are.

Cherias the Kitling |

That's entirely up to the GM. Hmm, Cherias doesn't have a holy symbol, since Oracles don't need them to cast spells. Something to remedy I suppose.

DM NomadSage |

Round One
Initiative Order: Melainthe [20], Cherias [16], Seren, Segang [13], Absinthe [7], Vampires [1]
Melianthe and Cherias strike at the vampires as they spring to attack, the former connecting with some force, but her stake just deflects off the foe's hardened skin.
Melianthe tries to defensively cast, but botches it and loses the spell. She reflexively backs away. Cherias steps to the center and calls out a blast of positive energy. The vampires flinch away from the holy channel, skin burning.
Seren and Segang team up against the western vampire, Seren distracting it while Segang takes up his spear and drives it home. Absinthe slashes her scimitar at the eastern, delivering a minor cut. Both vampires' wounds immediately start to mend.
The vampires retaliate with clenched fists. The western closes on Segang but misses, while Absinthe takes a solid punch to the shoulder. A third vampire pops up from the remaining coffin in the southern corner. Snarling, it locks eyes onto Cherias.
Cherias: DC 16 Will save or become dominated. All: Actions for round 2?
Yellow Will save vs Cherias's channel: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Orange Will save vs Cherias's channel: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Green slam vs Segang: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 - 2 = 14
Yellow slam vs Absinthe: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 - 2 = 18; Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Cherias the Kitling |

5 points of damage healed on Abby, 5 points on Mel, 10 points transferred to Cherias.
Is that Dominate Person? Because if so, Cherias isn't a humanoid.
In case it's some other sort of dominate effect: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Guess it doesn't matter much.
Cherias repels the vampire's attempt to dominate him, and with a cry of ecstasy, a sudden, pure light shines out from the aasimar's body. He seems transformed into a being a pure white fire, which rather than burning, radiates a pleasant, soothing warmth -- except to the vampires, to whom it feels like a raging bonfire.
Activating Energy Body. Using a move action to heal himself.
1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Melianthe, Segang, and Seren are at full. Absinthe has 3 damage remaining from the attack, although I'm not entirely sure whether she was fully healed to begin with, and Cherias is at 40.

Absinthe Mooneyes |

"Foul, undead filth!" Absinthe hisses, teeth bared at the wound - which mends no less swiftly than the one she delivered to the vampire. "Die!"
The tiefling's blade flickers and cuts at the vampire before her.
Scimitar attack roll 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 damage.

And again I did not know it was my turn. I think you are going to have to state Party up or something similar. And now the map is not working It takes me to the campaign info tab.
Still raging. Segang continues to attack the one he hit last round. His aim is near perfect but does not hit a vital spot.
spear: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 301d8 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16
Confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 151d8 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Segang's Witch Hunter Barbartian power adds two points of damage to creatures that have spells or spell like abilities like that dominate so please add 2 points to his last attack. I will add it here.

Guess I missed it. My goal is to always post daily. And since I can do quick posts from work I can usually manage this.

DM NomadSage |

Round Two
Initiative Order: Melainthe [20], Cherias [16], Seren, Segang [13], Absinthe [7], Vampires [1]
Melianthe hexes her foe, cackling madly. The vampire does not seem to notice. Cherias transforms into a fiery being of purest energy, filling the crawlspace with light and healing himself. The light causes the vampires to flinch away momentarily, but they continue to attack.
Seren uses the distraction and shuffles to flank, stabbing the western vampire from behind. Opposite, Segang steps back for space then pierces the enemy through. Screeching and howling, the vampire trashes a moment before hanging still on the shaft of Segang's longspear.
Absinthe stabs her rapier with a curse, but her target slaps the blade aside. The remaining vampires team up on Absinthe, moving to flank and pummeling her from both sides.
Don't forget crouching penalties.
Map sent.
ALL: Actions for round 3?
Orange slam vs Absinthe: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 22; Damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 6 + (2, 4) = 13
Yellow slam vs Absinthe: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 20; Damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + (2, 5) = 16

Cherias the Kitling |

Absinthe heals 5 hp, which will put her at 10 I think, and bringing Cherias to 35, and then Cherias moves from C6 to C8, healing Absinthe. This will provoke AoOs if the vampires want to take them.
The brilliant energy being that Cherias has become passes through Absinthe's body, enveloping her in soothing warmth for a moment as he moves past.
Energy Body healing to Absinthe: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Bringing her to 18.
In this form, Cherias has the elemental subtype, which gives him immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, stunning, critical hits, flanking, and precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack. Also, "Any undead creature striking you with its body or a handheld weapon deals normal damage, but at the same time the attacker takes 1d6 points of positive energy damage + 1 point per oracle level." I think that means that undead take damage if they attack no matter whether they hit or not, but it could be interpreted as only with a successful hit. In any case, if the vampires try to hit Cherias as he moves past them, they're taking damage if they hit him (and possibly if they miss).
After moving past Absinthe, Cherias summons another flash of light that fills the small room, healing himself and his allies.
channel: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 6) = 17

Segang |

Absinthe, will you flank with me? Segang Segang asks as he drops the spear and takes a 5' step to A8. As he moves he pulls his earth breaker from his back and prepares to attack. If Absinthe agrees to flank with him he will ready an attack once he has a flank. Otherwise he will go ahead and attack.
Spear: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 11 - 2 + 2 = 222d6 + 15 ⇒ (5, 1) + 15 = 21
the to hit number represents both a flank and a minus to to the tight quarters. I have forgotten if we have any buffs.

Melianthe Ssulissien |

Melianthe focuses, muttering quietly and waving a hand at the vampire nearer to her and Segang.
Ear Piercing Scream
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 Damage is halved as vampires automatically make/don't need a Fort save.

Actually, Mel I believe undead are immune to any Fort Save reqd spell that doesn't affect objects
Seren will move to the east side into a flanking position if available. He will aid other with Absinthe.
Hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Cherias the Kitling |

Yeah I don't think EPS can work on undead unfortunately. I forgot to note in my last post, that healing brings Absinthe to 35, and I'll wait to see what Cherias is at depending on what happens with the vampires' AoOs.

Segang |

Try lowering their AC. I am unsure but if they get the same AC as vampires then its in the lower mid 20s. I suspect my 22 above will miss. We shall see.

Absinthe Mooneyes |

Sorry, sorry. Got so distracted over the weekend... >_<;
"Why, Segang, I'd be glad to," Absinthe replies, a mirthless grin on her face as she takes a flowing step to the side - and her scimitar slices at the vampire now wedged between her and the Shoanti.
Absinthe 5-foot steps to C8 and flank-attacks the vampire at B8.
Scimitar attack roll: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 + 2 = 23 for 1d6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + (5, 4) = 18 damage, sneak attack already included.

DM NomadSage |

Round Three
Initiative Order: Melainthe [20], Cherias [16], Seren, Segang [13], Absinthe [7], Vampires [1]
Melianthe stabs her spear ineffectively at the eastern vampire. Cherias also moves into the melee before calling out a healing burst. The vampire swings at him reflexively, connecting hard but taking burns in return as his elemental form burns her skin. Segang shifts position, flanking opposite Cherias and managing to swing his maul effectively in the tight quarters and land a crushing hit.
Seren edges around to flank the southern vampire, distracting him effectively for Absinthe to capitalize on. She cuts a deep wound into that foe then moves away from her own vulnerable position.
The southern vampire fights in fatal desperation, swinging and missing at Absinthe. The other vampire bellows in rage at Cherias and Segang then shifts into a misty cloud and floats up and out of the crawlspace.
Yellow draws AoOs from Segang, Cherias, Absinthe and Melianthe as it flees in gaseous form.
Had to adjust declared movements on the fly, as the east side was getting a bit crowded. You still got the desired flanks.
Actions for round 4?
Yellow AoO vs Cherias: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 2 = 21; Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Cherias Damage to Yellow: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Orange slam vs Absinthe: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 - 2 = 14 {miss}

Segang |

Earthbreaker AOO: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 11 - 2 + 2 = 212d6 + 15 ⇒ (4, 5) + 15 = 24
Is there a new map?
Round 4
Segang moves to any threat and attacks, flanking if possible.
Earthbreaker AOO: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 11 - 2 + 2 = 262d6 + 15 ⇒ (5, 2) + 15 = 22 -2 to hit if not in a flank
Not sure if he can hurt the gaseous one…

Absinthe Mooneyes |

Absinthe slices at the fleeing vampire, preferably while it is still trying to transition from flesh to fog, but she'll cut at the vapours if that is all she can do!
AoO Masterwork scimitar attack roll (still flanking): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 22 for 1d6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (5, 4) = 14 damage (sneak attack included.)
Hit or miss, the tiefling next spins on her hoof, scimitar whistling through the air as she makes a wicked cut for the neck of the last vampire -- and then abruptly drops into a crouch, one leg scything for the vampire's in an attempt to knock it down!
"Stake! Hurry!" she shouts.
Trip vs. the final vampire: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
