As the group prepares to embark, Lyraesel drops her gear and weapons and walks to the river's edge. Staring out on the water meditatively, she slows her breathing and calms her mind, seemingly almost unaware of her companions' conversation.

Stripping off her armour and clothing, she walks forward into the water, almost in a trancelike state, ignoring both her nudity and the chill as she continues on, swimming out into the midst of the river as she begins to chant in druidic, her body and mind communing with the spirit of the river, spreading out along its banks to gain her awareness of the river's body.

"Me, I'm just hoping one of you strapping lads can haul me up once we get to the ship. I'm not exactly experienced in climbing..."

Alara trails off as Lyraesel strips naked and steps right into the freezing water. Her expression is caught between shameless ogling and outright surprise that she'd do something so bold.

"...she's gonna regret that in a minute. Anybody have a spell to cure hypothermia?"

Bernard says nothing but lightly elbows Shalelu in the ribs.

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

The first thing that Lyraesel notices is that the water is cold.

Spending time in the river does convey the risk of hypothermia, as Alara mentioned.

Shalelu says to Bernard, "I guess she's an exhibitionist." She cracks a wry smile.

Lyraesel:
Through the water your vision speeds to a nearby shore where you see a funeral ship - a knorr perhaps a hundred feet long, with a single deck and a sail. The real deal! Snorri Stone-Eye must've been both rich and important. Gathered around a large pyre on the beach are a motley collection of Ulfen men and women, mostly warriors, many intoxicated, but still a much larger force than the group you faced at Asvig's farm. They are taking turns giving speeches and commemorating Snorri Stone-Eye.

Roll20 is uneditable due to a catastrophic database issue, so we'll update when we can...

As Lyraesel meditates in the river about 15' from shore, the water ripples and then an enormous claw emerges and snaps at the unarmored druidess!

Some perception rolls:

Lyraesel: Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Kersey: Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Morgrym: Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Alara: Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Bernard: Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Bernard is surprised. Boo!

Some initiative rolls:

Lyraesel: Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Kersey: Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Morgrym: Initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Alara: Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Bernard: Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Hungry beastie: Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Everyone but Kersey beat the intiative of the indistinct shape that's 25' out and underwater. Bernard is surprised and thus has no action this round. As this is a surprise round, you can either move or take a standard action. Note the usual penalties for firing into water, casting spells across the surface of water, etc.

Standard Action: Cast ill omen on the claw's owner!

This is what I get for being thematic. lol

Her mind distracted from her meld with the river, Lyraesel lets out a started cry as the giant claw grabs her. Wrestling her focus, the druidess utters a chant, her bare skin darkening to the colour of iron as it's surface hardens to protect her. With a mere effort of will, her extended vision projects beneath the water to view the creature as it holds her.

Lyraesel:
It's a tremendous (Huge size) crab with a spiny shell. Looks like the kind of thing that hunts and eats sharks. You just happen to be a tasty lupine morsel! It is a natural animal, though (just bigger than we get them on Earth).

Surprise
Morgrym, a bit entranced by the view of the woman walking naked into the water, is a bit startled by the claw as it breaks the surface.

Still not one to lay about when people are in danger, Morgrym grips his Urgosh and starts heading to the water.

Move action to close

Round 1
As Morgrym wades in, he realizes that he is a little unequipped for swimming, but continues to plunge in as a teammate is in danger.

Move action to continue closing, Standard to Cast Shield of Faith

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

Moving into the water is difficult terrain, so Morgrym only gets 10' into the water. That puts him juuuust too far away to cast shield of faith on Lyraesel. Also since this is a surprise round he can't do both a move and an action anyway.

Lyraesel:
The crab is considered vermin anyhow so most druids can't talk to it regardless. I understand about this being the wrong kind of seafood eating.

The crab snaps at both Lyraesel and Morgrym!

Flailing in the creature's crushing grasp, Lyraesel forces herself to calm down, clenching her fist and focusing on the ram headed ring on her right hand. With an effort of will she triggers the ring, a vaguely ram shaped blast of force slamming into the claw with a crack.

Ring of the Ram. Use 3 charges: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1) = 6

This force strikes a single target, dealing 1d6 points of damage if 1 charge is expended, 2d6 points if 2 charges are used, or 3d6 points if 3 charges (the maximum) are used. Treat this as a ranged attack with a 50-foot maximum range and no penalties for distance.

Round 1: Actions
Standard Action: Cast Shadow Trap on the crab!

Alara winces and tries to visualize the crab's shadow suddenly being weighed down by a massive anchor...

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

Morgrym bangs on the crab's shell, but it's just so massive that it's going to take more than that to dislodge it.

Crab will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

A great shadow passes under the water and the crab seems oddly weighted down. Unfortunately since it has its claws filled with your compatriots, this isn't stopping it from doing a lot of hurt!

The crab squeezes!
Crab: Constrict Lyraesel: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Drop her you overgrown lump of self propelled supper
Morgrym growls as he drives his spikey end after the crab.

Only to almost lose it as the crabs carapace hits it when it turns around.

Kelda smashes down her sword at the crab as it tries to escape, but to no avail.

The crab swims away with Lyraesel in its claw. Moves 60'. Pretty fast swimmer, even after it took an attack.

Shalelu launches a pair of arrows at the beast as it flees! One hits but still doesn't stop it. One misses and one glances off its shell.

I'm going to drown. Am I submerged this round? If so I have one round to live.

The blade of flame flickers out as Lyraesel lets out a strangled cry and slumps in the crab's claws, unconscious.

Holey moley!

Kersey's desperate swing crashes into the crab's shell and splits the monstrosity wide! Its claws flail and it releases the unconscious druidess from its grasp.

Shalelu ditches her bow, dives into the water, grabs Lyraesel, and hauls her to the surface so that she doesn't drown.

For defeating the shark-eating crab, each party member earns 457 experience points.

Once Lyraesel is returned to the relative safety of the beach and stabilized, Kelda calms down from her rage, and she haltingly drags the monstrous carcass up onto the sand.

"I don't know how we're going to get Lyraesel back into fighting trim to face the ship-burning," says Kelda, "but once we're done we're going to need a really big boiling pot."

Obviously you need to get Lyraesel back up before going to the ship. Kelda can run and get Koya for some healing, if you like, or you can use items or other healing powers if you wish.

Hope you haven't burned all of your smiting yet.

"Let's all agree to not go swimming in unknown water EVER again."

Bernard pulls his boots on and starts rummaging through Lyraesel's abandoned bag. "Got a wand here, anyone know how to use it? Morgrym?"

Shalelu puts her cloak over Lyraesel's naked form and says, "Or think twice about removing your armor before taking a dip. We're going to need our armor on while we pilot the kayaks, anyway."

Still got one.

Seeing the crab collapse into the wash Kersey starts to hustle through the water as best he can towards the Druid but Shalelu easily, and thankfully beats him there and rescues Lyraesal.

Letting out a sigh of relief he turns and marches out of the water to where the Ranger has her Druidess. ”Way ahead of you.” he tells Bernard as he produces his wand. ”Stay with us, Wolf,” he says to Lyraesal before gently touching her face with the healing wand.

Lyraesel awakens with Shalelu's cloak draped over her and the ranger looming over her on her hands and knees, watching closely for any signs of fluttering eyelids, while Kersey gently taps her on the head a few times with the healing wand.

”Think I got everything, do you have any other owwies or ouchies?” Kersey asks as he takes a step back so as to not crowd.

Coughing as she awakens, Lyrasel takes a while to get her bearings. Looking up to see Kersey over her with the wand her eyes dart around, settling on Shalelu's worried expression before she smiles and takes in a deep breath. "Thank you."

Shalelu frames Lyraesel's face with her sandy hands and says with a laugh, "You almost got eaten by a crab, you silly wolf! That's so absurd. Next time you want to go skinny dipping, tell me first." She winks.

"And be sure to set the pot to boil BEFORE you put the crab in. That way it dies with minimal suffering and you don't need to let all the meat out by breaking its shell!"
