Finally got my gear done, I upgraded the cloak to a +2 and got a belt of con +2 which puts me about fifty gold or so over the target.

I also went with Power Attack for my feet.

Regarding the ritual to enter the Dreamlands, it has to be done at night. You will need to decide where to perform it, and who if anyone knows about it. Your mortal bodies will be comatose while you psyche travels.

Some details about occult rituals:

The primary caster leads a ritual’s casting, often with the aid of a number of secondary casters. Secondary casters can be indispensable to the ritual’s casting even when they’re not taking an active role in ensuring its success. Unless stated otherwise in the ritual description, secondary casters must be within 100 feet and line of effect of the primary caster and each other during the entirety of a ritual’s casting.

While secondary casters can help by attempting the skill checks the primary caster assigns them, their chief purpose is to aid in the ritual’s casting. If a ritual’s casting is aided by at least four secondary casters, all casters gain a +1 bonus on all skill checks attempted as part of casting the occult ritual. This bonus increases by 1 for every four secondary casters beyond four (up to a maximum bonus of +5 for 20 or more secondary casters).

To cast an occult ritual, the primary caster must learn the ritual’s secrets (see Discovering Occult Rituals). Secondary casters can assist in the casting without fully understanding the intricacies of the ritual.

Since it is possible for those lacking the ability to cast arcane, divine, or psychic spells to cast rituals, variables that would normally rely on caster level (such as range and spell resistance) use the character level or total Hit Dice of the primary caster instead. This is the case even for a ritual caster who has the ability to cast spells. Characters with a caster level gain a +1 bonus on skill checks to cast a ritual, and this bonus increases by 1 for every 5 caster levels they possess (to a maximum of +5 at caster level 20th) as their understanding of the fundamentals of magic grows.

A primary ritual caster with the ability to cast spells or use spell-like abilities can tap into a ley line within 30 feet by performing a simple ritual that takes 1 hour per 2 caster levels of the ley line. At the end of the ritual, the primary caster must succeed at a Spellcraft check (DC = 15 + the ley line’s caster level) to attune herself with the ley line. If she fails, she can try the attunement ritual anew. On a successful check, the primary caster and any secondary casters gain a +1 bonus on skill checks to cast an occult ritual using the ley line, provided they remain within 30 feet of the ley line. This bonus increases by 1 for every 5 caster levels of the ley line, to a maximum of +5.

TL;DR each of you gets to make Kn:Planes and Kn: Arcarna checks, potentially with lots of bonuses. Two planes and three Arcarna checks need to pass. You also need to designate one person to take the backlash. Masterwork tools count as +2 and I'll let you use Lowls's library for that. Winter may be able to aid you magically if you inform her of your intention. She is a level 7 cleric now.

So as far as the checks go, can those without Knowledge (planes) and Knowledge (Arcana) still attempt to aid? Are the usual limitations on the skills not in place for this? And do we have that 25,000 gp worth of ivory? I don't remember if we ever got that.

To add a little colour to this, with the research rules you are allowed to make knowledge checks untrained if you have access to a library. I'm deeming the tomes you retrieved from Lowls's mansion as a library with the correct focus.

DC 25 when I only have a +6 means that I have to basically have a crit success without the bonuses. Bonus potential seems to be ... +10? Can we tap a ley line and remain in 30 feet of it while on a ship? Do we have enough caster levels to make the attempt worth it? Even if we can pull off the +10, if there is no other skill, that means some people will have to roll a 15 minimum to succeed.

... is failure just a battle, or a potentially world-ending thing like allowing chthulu into our realm or something?

(oh, I forgot the bonus for the library of +2, so potential of +12?)

Lay lines can be found, I'll look up the rules later. Yes you can get the bonuses untrained.

Heinrich has +10/11 in those skills and he has inspiration so he has a decent chance of making the checks, especially with bonuses. The scholars also have quite high knowledge skills, they may or may not be keen on participating however...

What happens if you fail, I'm afraid there is only one way to find out.

Ok here are the rules for laylines. In addition to these I'll house rule that a DC20 Kn: Arcarna check with a dowsing rod will point to the nearest layline (if any) within a mile and DC15 check for one within 1/4 mile. We can say you have a dowsing rod. The check takes 1 minute.

I've reread the rules and it looks like the primary caster can make all the checks, one every ten minutes. That makes things a ton easier.

I don't see anything in there on the Ley Line stuff that mentions using them from a boat (did I miss it?). I am guessing you can't, since they don't move, and we would be obviously moving, unless we purposely guided the craft along one, and one being along our path seems unlikely, but ?? Anyway, if we can't, that lowers the bonus potential to +7.

As for discussing in character, I already posted there, and this part was about points and rules... things that our characters wouldn't be talking about. Was there something specific I posted here that you wanted discussed elsewhere?

If Heinrich can make the rolls without the ley line bonuses, that does make it way better, and if we don't need assists by people who don't have a certain skill, it might even work.

Another character might say no way in hell, but Zarine is basically fearless, and she already woke up a world-ending beast for examining an item, so hey... might as well risk the fictional world some more. So, she's willing to try if the rest of the party is.

No you didn't miss anything! Most nights the boat will moor up somewhere, sometimes by throwing the anchor into the river, or by tying ropes around rocks or trees. You might get lucky and be able to moor up by a layline (you may need to persuade Skywin to moor in a particular place), or you might have to hike a bit.

You need to work out (preferably in character) a few things:

* Who will be primary ritual caster (I'm guessing Heinrich but there are other options)
* Who will take the backlash damage from the ritual (this happens whether it's successful or not).
* Whether you're doing this in secret or openly (the sailors reactions to potentially dangerous occult rituals are hard to predict).
* If you want to ask Winter to prepare any particular spells.
* Safety considerations for your sleeping bodies.

Can you clarify what you want us to keep track of on a separate sheet? I am not sure if I need to pull in another alias, or if I can just keep a separate statblock for the dreamlands stuff. Or, if it is cheating to tell us, just tell me if I need a duplicate alias. :)

GM, is it possible to attune to the blade in the coming days?

On top of that, Vorpal 'occupies' all +5 enhancements, i think?
Am i right to assume that this weapon will therefor not deal any [+X] damage?

This is exactly why a while back I moved us to virtual WBL. It's like ABP in that we don't need to track every last item that drops, but you can pick up and use a +5 weapon and gain all the plusses, no attunement.
