DM Darkblade Giantslayer Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master GM Darkblade

The Giantslayer Adventure Path begins in the fortified town of Trunau in the southern part of the Hold of Belkzen. A series of strange events trouble the beleaguered town. At the town’s request, the PCs must uncover the source behind these events and step in to save the town from forces which seek an end to Trunau and it's peoples.

I'm doing fine; haven't tried to get into any other games since this one was put on hiatus. Honestly, I'm kinda hoping a new Jade Regent game will pop up; that was the first PbP I was ever in and I never got past book one because of first a GM dropping the game and then a TPK. Until then, I'm content with my four other active ones. Thanks for checking! How about you?

So how many of you are still out there?

I am stepping down to part time come July 1st as my system is weak and I am constantly falling back ill. I will be working three 10s Monday thru Wednesday. If everyone wants to pick the game back up it may be possible, but my time would be limited to the last half of the week and weekends.

Any thoughts?

I would enjoy continuing down this (adventure) path.

Everyone would need to advance their characters to 4th level, with roughly 8,000gp worth of character wealth each, not counting Uskroth’s armor or Agrimmosh, the Hammer of Unmaking. Both those items are currently held by the town council while final ownership is debated, though the vote thus far leans heavily towards your group taking up the items in the defense of Trunau while investigating Grenseldek and this strange gemstone taken from the tomb below.

Sound fair?

I like that plan. I'll be busy the rest of the day with yardwork after I get home from work, so I won't be able to do much with leveling up until probably Thursday or Friday. Also, I just double-checked and Leira still has the Treasure Record on the profile. I will try to save a copy of it so we can reference it for all the loot found.

M Eladrin Druid | HP: 18 | Armor:2 | XP:3 | Str:+2 | Dex:+1 | Con:0 | Int:-1 | Wis:+1 | Cha:0 | d6 |

No Leira or Dundin so far?

What was the leather belt, scroll, and wand(if that info would be readily available given the downtime)?

And if Agrimmosh becomes available, might Adir retrain Dodge to warhammer proficiency? (I'm not claiming it, just thinking that with Adir's background, it might suit him.)

By the way, I thought I posted this in May in each of my games, but I didn't see it in Adir's posts. Sorry about that.

I am good to go.

I say we pick a pace our dm feels comfortable with.

As a two weapon fighter dwarf, the hammer suits Dundin too.

Armor probably for Brampton. It may be +2 mithral shirt for dundin. And Dundin gets aN animal companion and +1 Str to 18!!

Sounds fair to me. So I take it that I'm free to go ahead and modify Songan's herolab to reflect the level bump and update the gear. Do you want us to have 8,000 overall or add 8,000 to our current totals? I'm assuming the former, but I want to be sure.

While Songan knows what the hammer is, he's not at all a hammer wielder; either Dundin or Adir would be good recipients for it, I'd think.

What do y'all think about the extra ability point for Songan? I'm thinking either DEX or INT; DEX just because of its overall importance, but that would mean delaying the modifier increase to level 8, while putting it in INT would give me an immediate modifier bump.

Human Male Fighter 4 [HP 19/48] [AC:19 T:10 FF:19 CMD:19] [Init +3] [Fort +7 Ref +3 Will +2] [Perception +3]

I will get Brampton up to speed by tomorrow afternoon. Need sleep now and than back to work at 5am.

It appears Leira transplanted her character over to another Giantslayer campaign and as such I think will not be rejoining the group. As such we will likely need to start a new Loot Sheet moving forwards.

I will leave it to yourselves to decide if you want to replace her character or continue onwards with the remaining members.

Due to the loss of the salvaged loot Leira's character would have left with I will increase the party wealth to a 9000gp total per player, with nothing valued at over 5000gp, the maximum for the town. Most anything under 1000gp is available with a 75% chance. Items over this amount are potentially available at a 25% chance. Any item listed on the previous Loot Sheet will be available without a percentile roll, up to the quantities indicated on the sheet. Does this seem fair to everyone?

As for any deadline for character readiness, this weekend is for some a long holiday weekend so I would understand if anyone needed time to get themselves ready. I am not much up for festivities these days so I will likely take the time to ready up a few posts reiterating what has transpired and weave a few plot lines into the upcoming AP for each of your characters. If there is anything you want me to touch upon or something you'd like to see further down the road, please feel free to spoiler me a post, drop me a PM or whatever else and I will see what I can do to accommodate you.

Lastly I want to say thank you to each of you for having given me the time to work through my situation and standing by the post waiting for me to come back. So many games simply die away or lose player interests that I would not have faulted any of you for moving on to bigger and better games. It means a lot that you folks waited it out and seem so eager to jump back into this AP, blades out and spells at the ready for whatever I might throw at you next. I really appreciate it, I can think of no better group of players I'd want to roll the dice with.

Can we have our current items enchanted?
Could Dundin spend 4K to enchant his light shield to +2?

Also, are there other towns nearby that the group could move to do some shopping that may have items Trunau lacks or the group could order items from?

Rolls for items Dundin would be interested in @ 25%:
Belt of STR +2: 1d100 ⇒ 79
Belt of DEX +2: 1d100 ⇒ 98
Cloak of Resistance +2: 1d100 ⇒ 12
light shield with spikes +2: 1d100 ⇒ 54

amulet of natural armor +2: 1d100 ⇒ 41

Rolls for items Dundin would be interested in @ 75%:
Wand of CLW: 1d100 ⇒ 33
Wand of Resist Elements: 1d100 ⇒ 99
Wand of Enlarge Person: 1d100 ⇒ 58

I will post in gameplay to make sure I see updates.

I feel that we really need to find a replacement for Leira. I feel like finding someone for healing or arcane support is very much needed in this AP. If we could find someone interested in playing a Life Shaman... well that could potentially take care of both issues at once!

*EDIT*

Apparently I've already updated Delia to 4th level, though I don't recall doing it... So I just need to figure out gear. I'll wait to hear back more on Dundin's questions, because I think that's the path Delia would likely take. She has a very nice bow already and would look mostly to just enchant it when possible. And I think I'll attempt for some new, armor...

For all the following rolls low is bad and high is good.
Mithral Shirt 25% chance: 1d100 ⇒ 54
Belt of Dex +2: 1d100 ⇒ 37

Enchanting can be done as long as the caster level requirement is 6th level or less. You would need to pay the difference in prices but the overall item cost must still be below 5000gp. This is not so much about monetary value as much as power creep and to avoid devaluing treasures which may be received later in the AP. (+2 would be the maximum armor can be enchanted to in Trunau and the item must first be of masterwork quality.)

Low roll succeeds, higher rolls fail.

Items can be "ordered" from other locales, but there would be a time delay before the items are received. The players will have one week from the end of the Battle of Bonemarch Hill until the events of this AP begin. Monies for ordered items will need to be placed on deposit with the moneylenders in Trunau until the item is received. Items would not be delivered before the AP starts, and this track takes players out of Trunau for several weeks.

It is possible travelling merchants may carry some of the items of interest to players, you may make three rerolls the day before you are set to depart to see if anything new arrives amongst the Barterstones.

Uskroth's Armor: This battered, well-used suit of +1 half-plate automatically resizes itself to match the size of its wearer. Once per day on command, the armor can bestow upon its wearer the effects of righteous might for 5 rounds. The wearer’s alignment determines the DR gained from this ability. A good wearer gains DR 5/evil, an evil wearer gains DR 5/good, and a wearer who is neither good nor evil chooses which DR to gain the first time she activates this ability—once chosen, it cannot be changed. Wt. 50 lbs.

Agrimmosh: Agrimmosh appears to be a simple stone blacksmith’s hammer engraved with Minderhal’s holy symbol. It functions as a +2 impact warhammer that automatically resizes itself to match the size of its wielder. Once per day as a full-round action, the wielder of Agrimmosh can use the hammer to cast heightened enlarge person (Fortitude DC 23 negates). This effect lasts for 20 minutes. Whenever the wielder of Agrimmosh confirms a critical hit against a creature of the humanoid type, the target creature must succeed at a DC 23 Fortitude save or shrink by one size category, as by heightened reduce person. This effect lasts for 20 minutes. Wt. 5 lbs.

Geode "Map": The rock lodged in Uskroth’s eye socket is no simple stone. Removing the fist-sized hunk of dark, igneous rock and examining its other side reveals it to be a magnificent geode whose rich violet and verdant emerald crystals form glittering crystalline patterns. An Appraise check by Councilor Lessie Crumkin revealed the geode to be a spectacular pleochroic variety of tourmaline, the nearest known deposits of which lie in the Mindspin Mountains to the south and west. While it would take an expert appraiser to price the large geode, its value is secondary to its true function as a potential treasure map. Jagrin Garth revealed an old legend he'd heard as a child, that once long ago a great gemstone was carved to lead the way to an ancient dwarven hero's burial crypt. The priceless stone was captured by giant raiders in wars past and thought lost forever. This geode’s crystalline valleys and mounds seem to reflect the exact topography of the Mindspin Mountains, and a carved groove along the mountains might indicate a possible trail through the mountain range. This “map” may well lead to the tomb of the fabled giantslayer Nargrym Steelhand, but unfortunately, it is incomplete. In order to fully use the map, someone must find the second half of the geode, most likely in the hands of the giant chieftain Grenseldek. Wt. 1 lb.

Dex would be my choice Songan.

Delia's right that we could use another, especially if they have some heals.

The half-plate is probably best suited for Brampton, I think.

I am interested in Agrimmosh, as is Dundin, I believe. Someone is going to get some funny looks wielding the weapon of a LE god of giants.

Any chance that Tuzak's armor could get done in time?

We've only encountered a cave giant so far, not any hill giants, correct?

Darkblade, I wanted to get your input on this thought I had regarding Jace. At 7th level he will get the Grab ability and I was thinking it might be interesting to work on getting Jace the Improved Grapple feat. He would first have to take Improved Unarmed Strike to qualify for it and some GMs do not like the idea of an animal companion gaining Improved Unarmed Strike. I would like to have something else for Jace to do in combat other than simply Full-Attacking every round. Plus I simply love the idea of a massive warcat grappling with a giant! I think it might make for some interesting options to have Jace "pin" a giant by the throat so that we could maybe interrogate them. Let me know what you think!

*EDIT*

I also wanted to check with you on what Magic Item slots would be available for Jace. The Animal Archives book has the following listed for Jace's creature type: Armor, belt (saddle), chest, eyes, headband, neck, shoulders, wrist. I definitely plan to put some cash into getting Jace an Amulter of Mighty Fists so I can add some abilities to his attacks.

Sorry for the delay, I fell under the weather for a bit. I hope everyone understands you didn't receive an extra 9000 gold pieces after the battle, but you should have gear and magical items, both new and old, which total no more than 9000 gold. This does not include Brinya's Love, Agrimmosh, or Uskroth's armor of course.

For Brampton:

Handy Haversack: 1d100 ⇒ 33
Ring of Feather Fall: 1d100 ⇒ 62
Ring of Sustenance: 1d100 ⇒ 41
Eyes of the Owl: 1d100 ⇒ 77
Gauntlets of Skilled Maneuver Trip: 1d100 ⇒ 64
Amulet of Natural Armor +1: 1d100 ⇒ 52
Bag of Holding Type I: 1d100 ⇒ 22
Rope of Climbing: 1d100 ⇒ 56
Nightdrops: 1d100 ⇒ 70
Iron Rope: 1d100 ⇒ 15

No more than two of any particular potion may be found at this time, amongst all of you, and only one of any other particular item may be found in stock.

Before you depart Trunau for your river voyage, as shown in the Gameplay thread, you can attempt to recall information regarding Ghostlight Marsh, Harcrist's Blockade, or Redlake Fort with successful Knowledge (Geography), (History), or (Local) checks respectively. The result of your checks determine the information learned. Players may make one check only for each item, if skilled accordingly.

Adir Bloodmoon wrote:

Yes it can be completed before the group leaves Trunau but remember the armor will count against Adir's wealth total.

Songan wrote:

9000 gold is the total character wealth, so it would not benefit to sell things at half value, it would actually decrease your overall character wealth.

I think everything is caught up now. Just one last item of business. Is it the group's wish to add another player to the mix? Thus far only Delia and Adir have voted in the affirmative, I don't recall seeing a response yet from Dundin, Songan, or Brampton.

I did misunderstand, but I think Delia's gear will easily be under 9000 anyway as she did not have much of anything gear wise other than her new bow. I will Talley it all up and double check.

Efficient Quiver (1,800 GP/25%): 1d100 ⇒ 30

So I got everything I wanted minus the efficient quiver. I'd call that a successful day at the mall, since that's more a gravy item with the muleback cords already successful. Except...I seem to have totally forgotten restocking arrows. I'm assuming that something as mundane as a quiver of arrows is findable?

Brinya gave the knife to your group for both finding out the truth of Rodrik's killing and for saving her life in the near riot at the start of the battle.

Remember, the reroll was for three individual items, not three groups of items.

Yes mundane equipment like normal ammunition is easily restocked from the Longhouse stores.

Oh! Well, crap. I totally misunderstood the intention of your instructions then. I'm...not entirely sure what the best way to correct the error would be, save from simply mulligan'ing the roll. How do you want me to proceed, Darkblade?

Also, would you allow rolls for slight variations on the items? For example, if I can't get the +2 STR comp. shortbow, can I make another roll for a +1 STR comp. shortbow?

For some reason I don't recall the item getting imbued. I remember us getting the blade, just not it gaining magical properties. Also, did we ever decide who was getting it? Last I can recall, Delia was holding it because I don't think anyone else had taken the Oath.

I would say simply pick three of the items missed from the original Equipment list that were missed and reroll them, much as Dundin did I believe with his post. That I think would be most fair to everyone.

Sounds fair to me, too.

+1 Comp(+2) Shortbow Re-roll): 1d100 ⇒ 3
Mithril Chain: 1d100 ⇒ 57
Muleback Cords: 1d100 ⇒ 77

Am I allowed to keep rolling for other items that I've thought of since those initial rolls? I was thinking I'd have all my money spent the first things but, due to my misunderstanding, I actually have a good bit left.

Any chance that Tuzak's armor could get done in time?
Yes it can be completed before the group leaves Trunau but remember the armor will count against Adir's wealth total.

Thank for the reminde. And it's double cost for medium creatures, so 540g. Stuff adds up fast.
