Unfortunately, it wasn't the door that was trapped....
Kali leaves the charnel house room and heads for the door at the end of the hall. Her focus on the door (which is not trapped, btw) is so intense that she doesn't notice the slight gap in the flagstones of the floor, which promptly give way under her and deposit her in the bottom of a 10' deep pit. The kitsune discovers the hard way that the bottom is also covered with spikes. Take 18 HP piercing damage, Kali.
Standard Acrobatics check to avoid falling damage, please.
Everyone is taken by surprise at this, so when the spider scuttles out from a shadowed alcove in one wall of the pit and pushes the floor back into position, no one has a chance to react until it has some cover from the floor section.

Moon Spider Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
DM Carbide |
It's in the pit with Kali, currently under the pivoting floor piece. If you're standing next to the pit, you can target it.
Kali Starr |
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Stabilization check: 1d20 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (6) + 1 - 3 = 4
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva quickly leans forward and attempts to grab the spider, setting her sword down beside her as she crouches. Unable to get her hands on the thing, she steps back to make room for someone else to try. 5' step back after failed grapple.
Grapple: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
*sigh*
Senja Kala |
Senja takes a few steps forward, positioning himself near the pit but trying to stay out of the spider's reach. He brings both hands together and conjures up a tangled mass of shadow, like a collapsed spider's web, and throws it at the moon spider.
Misfortune hex, DC 15 Will to resist
Melody Flaxseed |
"Kali!" Melody bleats as she rushes forward and calls on her goddess to heal their trapped ally.
I'm assuming the flap on top of the pit is not sufficiently thick that it would block a channel. . . unless it's made of lead I guess.
channel: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
"Blast that girl! Shoulda waited for me!" Kragnor sputters as he moves towards the pits edge, drawing his bow, and looks down. Kicking the floor to make it pivot, he fires at the spider.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Asvald Bjornson |
”Damn”, Asvald growls.
He rushes forward and chops at the giant spider with his sword. ”Die monster!”
Sword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Confirming: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Extra Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Nice. If it’s still up:
As the vermin reels from his blow, Asvald whistles sharply and brandishes his blade. For a fraction of a second its surface shines like the sun.
Dazzling blade. DC 12 will save or be blinded for a round. Roll twice if the misfortune landed. =P
DM Carbide |
It's getting kind of crowded up there--only two people at a time can be next to the pit, Senja had to be up there to cast misfortune and Eva had to be up there to try to grab the spider. Kragnor, with those two in front of you you're not going to be able to push open the trap door and shoot, and Asvald, you likewise can't get to the edge. Besides, the spider has an action coming after Kragnor as well.
DM Carbide |
Kragnor also had to be adjacent to the pit, though, and he acts before you.
Asvald Bjornson |
Well blerg. It acts before Asvald right? I'll figure out a way to get into melee after it's acted.
Senja Kala |
Senja moved adjacent to the corner of the pit, so there should be at least 2 squares available to move into. I interpreted adjacent to mean anywhere in contact with the lines forming the edge of the pit - based on that, there's gobs of room!

Round 1 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Senja-acted
Eva-acted/Melody-acted
Kragnor-acted
Spider-acted
Kali (when she wakes up)
Asvald
Senja, the spider resists your hex. Eva misses, Kragnor misses, Melody stabilizes Kali and cures 1 HP on her, and at its action the spider finishes reclosing the trap door.
Asvald, what do you do? Your target is on the other side of the closed door.
DM Carbide |
Yeah, I understand. However, nothing is going to happen until the party up top acts; the spider isn't coming out, and Kali is unconscious and in the pit with it.
ETA: Kragnor, you're quite sure that once the trap door is opened--as, e.g., by someone stepping on it--you'd be able to wedge it open fairly easily (DC 10 Disable Device check).
DM Carbide |
I would allow that, yes. Depending on whether the facts on the ground had changed in any way, of course.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Once he has a moment to act, (i.e. on his turn) Kragnor kicks the tile open again and tries to wedge it open.
Disable: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Of course.
Folio Reroll: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 4 = 12 Heh, snake eyes! At least it's above "10".

Round 2:
Initiative order
Senja
Eva/Melody
Kragnor
Spider
Kali (when she wakes up)
Asvald-delaying
And since it's a skill check, you can succeed even on a 1. I'll assume that Senja, Eva, and Melody also delay.
The dwarf gets the trap door to open and wedges it in place. The spider, however, is at the bottom of the pit, next to Kali's body.
Asvald, Senja, Eva, and Melody up!
DM Carbide |
Yes, with the caveat that there are spikes at the bottom of the pit.

DM Carbide |
Asvald, you can essentially do so by fighting defensively, though it might be getting a little metagamey to do that when you know you have a guaranteed crit in the pipeline. OTOH, you're a skald, and one of your party members is defenseless and menaced by the evil (and they really are) spider.
Round 2 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Kragnor-acted
Senja-acted
Eva/Melody-acted
Asvald-acted
Spider-acted
Kali (when she wakes up)
Senja's hex takes hold on the spider. With a fierce shout, Asvald leaps into the pit. He lands well enough to avoid more than a bit of a jolt from the impact and is able to dodge most of the spikes, but one sticks him for 4 HP. His sword cleaves into the spider, wounding it severely, and almost killing it...almost. The skald's dazzling flourish reflects off of its myriad eyes; it starts for just a moment, then scuttles backwards and clings to the opposite wall. The rows of spiracles along its abdomen dilate then, and a dense cloud pours forth from them. Melody immediately recognizes it as an obscuring mist effect, though recognition does not aid her in penetrating the fog.
Eva can act, and I believe that the last round of channeling got Kali back conscious again.
Untrained Acrobatics check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
# of spikes: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Spike attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Spike attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Spike attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Spike damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
DC 12 Will save vs. blindness: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Moon spider: -16 HP
Kali Starr |
Kali awakens only to find herself seriously injured in mist enshrouded pit with some weird spider nearby to her. Using her ninja training, she immediately vanishes from view, then puts herself in a defensive posture in case the spider could still see her, and stands up.
Used Vanishing trick as a swift action. Total defense action as a standard action for +4 AC, stood up as a move action. Spent 1 Ki pool point, 4 left.
DM Carbide |
It 5' stepped back, Asvald. Eva, yes, but you'll need to step back another 5' to give yourself 10' running start--otherwise it's DC 20.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Well, yeah, I have plenty of movement to move back 5' and then run forward.
Eva backs up a few steps and then takes off running, pushing off from the edge of the pit with the intention of bounding across it.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
As she lands on the other side, she whirls and swings her swordfist downward at the arachnid below.
Attack (higher ground): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 1 = 23
Miss Chance (high good): 1d100 ⇒ 83
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Edit: Actually I just realized I dropped the sword, so I'll have to just punch it.
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald ignores the nasty cut up his leg in favor of finishing the monstrous spider. He advances into the mist and slashes at it.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
DM Carbide |
The spider holds up a pair of cards, a zero with a dot for a decimal place and a five. Because it's just that evil.
DM Carbide |
Eva, were you going to act before or after it created the mist?
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Didn't know I had a choice. For the post I just put up to work, I think it'd have to be after it made the mist since I otherwise wouldn't be able to reach it from the other side of the pit.
DM Carbide |
Eva's fist sinks into the creature's carapace with a meaty crunch. All of its legs flail reflexively, and then it collapses to the bottom of the pit.
Out of combat!
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
"I'm fine, but thanks for asking lad." Kragnor responds.
DM Carbide |
Think you missed a "y" there, Kragnor.
Kali Starr |
"I'm hurt, but still alive, thanks you to guys." Kali replies, breathing a sigh of relief as she reappears near the same spot, "I'm going to let Kragnor take the lead from now on, no problem!"
Is it possible to take 10 to climb in and out of the pit?
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald stabs the spider once more for good measure before sheathing his sword and climbing up as well.
”As soon as we're patched up we should get moving again. Whatever else is down here likely heard us just now.”
Can we get some witchy infernal healing lovin’?
Senja Kala |
Senja draws his healing wand and offers it to any who need it.
Wand is at 50/50 charges, you get 10 hp per charge - use however many you need and post the number of charges remaining, please.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
While the others are mending their wounds, Eva examines the doorframe and listens at the door on her side of the pit.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Kali Starr |
That sounds fine to me.
With her wounds completely healed after a minute or so, Kali carefully climbs out of the pit and looks to follow the dwarf forward.
