I have returned! Korea was very warm and humid but I endured.
Thank you for your patience.

DM Carbide |

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm mostly back among the living. Did anyone of you go to GenCon?

OK, so a couple of rules interpretation questions. The way this works, Eva has to use a move action to go through the tunnel. She's squeezing past party members, so she can't stop in the tunnel. She reaches the end, climbs or jumps up, then moves past five morlocks, packed into three squares (2 in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the third). To manage this trick, she has to either use Acrobatics to tumble through the squares occupied by the morlocks, or use the overrun special attack. Failing an Acrobatics check has the following result (from the PRD):
If you attempt to move through an enemy's space and fail the check, you lose the move action and provoke an attack of opportunity.
She failed the third check. At what point does she lose the move action? She can't stop where she is because there are two morlocks there, and can't really stop anywhere but where she came from. This seems counterintuitive.
Failing an overrun check results in
...you stop[ping] in the space directly in front of the opponent, or the nearest open space in front of the creature if there are other creatures occupying that space.
But there are no open spaces in front of the creature except the space she came from. This likewise seems counterintuitive.
Can I get some input on resolving this?

Would it be easier to just say Kali 5' stepped at the end of her last turn? :)
To your actual question, generally I've seen it run as you described, with the character being shunted all the way back to the nearest "valid" spot.

DM Carbide |

Kali doesn't have anywhere to 5' step to. Even if no one crowded in behind her, squeezing makes the tunnel difficult terrain.

I'll try to move through the morlocks next turn as one move action. If that doesn't work, then I'll reverse and move out of the way.

GM Tektite |

Eh, hey everyone! Sorry to crash into Discussion Carbide, but wanted to drop in and say hello to you guys. I've been thinking about all you guys lately (probably because my family and I just moved back to Indy the weekend before GenCon), and decided to check into the boards today. I see most all the stalwarts are still around. Just wanted to say hey! I've been tempted to play again, but, well, who knows. I suspect I'll lurk around more often and maybe test the waters in the future.

DM Carbide |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Glad to hear from you, Tek. I hope the move went well (having never had one that was exactly what you'd call pleasant).

My father is having open heart surgery in the next couple days, so there will probably be no posts from me until Sunday. If anything changes, I will let you all know.
FYI, Kali still has Mirror Image up with 4 images.

DM Carbide |

Good luck, and hoping you get a high-quality surgical team & doctors that actually talk to him (and you). The folks who did my father-in-law's triple bypass were excellent, not least because they took the time to discuss things before and after.

Hey DM.
I'd like to take a moment and thank you for running this, getting us this far, and generally doing an awesome job. I think it's amazing that we've managed to keep almost the entire original crew for over three years and 4,000 posts -- in my experience, that just doesn't happen without a really dedicated DM.
So thank you.

![]() |

I am totally with you on that, Eva!
I'll tell you, Carbide, that when this game popped up on the recruitment radar, I quickly contacted Feral and Oladon, who were both eager to jump into it with me, as they thought highly of you as a DM. And they were right.
Oladon and I were having a little g-chat earlier, and she said you had expressed some concern about having made major rules errors in this game. That characterization of the game had never entered my mind - the game is fun, smooth and enjoyable. It's had some slowdowns, like any long-term game, but the fact that we've still got nearly the whole starting crew and that it's still providing lots of fun is a big deal to me!

DM Carbide |

Thanks, all, for the kind words. It's often hard to know how things come across from this side of the screen, so the feedback is welcome.

DM Carbide |

So, thinking about this some more. It occurs to me that it's not immediately obvious to anyone except Senja that the devil saved vs. his spell. I'm thinking a DC 15 Sense Motive check to realize right away that something has gone wrong (base DC 20, with a situational bonus because you're all keyed up and ready for things to go south). If everyone makes that, we'll go to Round 1; otherwise, everyone who makes it can act in a surprise round. Sound reasonable?

![]() |

Carbide - could Senja have just said 'Rats!' or 'My spell didn't work!' once she failed her save, to communicate that to the others? Since we had laid out a plan that I would try the spell, it seems like a reasonable outcome and avoids a bunch of checks.

Thankfully, my father's surgery went as well. Thanks for the well wishes and good vibes, I appreciate them.
Also, let me echo everyone else in giving Carbide a big thumbs up for his GMing.

Hi all - just a little notice on my availability: I am leaving Thursday for a week-long work trip to Colombia, and then the day after I get back, I turn around and head to Puerto Rico to help with hurricane cleanup until mid-November. I will have internet some of the time, but will be very busy so posting time will be limited.

![]() |

Keep up the good work Senja. I'm confident you'll accomplish more than pass out paper towels.

DM Carbide |

Glad to hear about your dad's surgery, Kali. Good luck and safe travels, Senja.
I found out this weekend that my lab is having an enforcement action taken against it for the electrical incidents I think I may have mentioned. None of it is in my division, but I'm reviewing safety docs for the place where two of them happened, and there's some considerable sensitivity here. This has been taking up a lot of my attention at work, as you might imagine.

I'm confident you'll accomplish more than pass out paper towels.
That's certainly the hope. Just heard from a friend of mine who's there now. She's running a large operation and one of her crews was trying to get to a village to assess their drinking water supply. They discovered the road was washed out, so they hiked to the village and found out there was no electricity for the pump that gets drinking water from their well. So my friend is working to arrange for FEMA to bring in a generator by helicopter so these folks will have water. Seems like a worthwhile endeavor.

DM Carbide |

Department of Energy's Office of Enforcement. When they come out, they tend to go after the contractor (i.e., us) pretty heavily, but they can also pay particular attention to the local DOE folks. After all, the local DOE office is supposed to be riding herd on us, making sure we don't get to this point.

DM Carbide |

My workplace finally got around to blocking the rest of the Paizo site, so my posting pace is going to go down more than a bit. It doesn't help that Wayfinder still isn't working for me.

DM Carbide |

So the site is still blocked, I was off at an SF con weekend before last, was trying to wrap up the one game I ran for Game Day 6, and then this past Friday my wife and I celebrated our 27th anniversary. I haven't had much time for the boards lately, though I hope that things will settle a bit after Thanksgiving.

DM Carbide |

A few late nights at work dealing with the aftermath of a fire. (No one was hurt or contaminated, fortunately.)

![]() |

Yoiks, the fun never stops there, eh? I'm in Mendocino County in northern California right now, dealing with the aftermath of a pretty large fire, and waiting to hear if I'll be heading to Ventura/LA/San Diego to deal with the aftermath of the fires there.
Feels a bit like the end of the world...

![]() |

This is a very useful site if you live in California.

DM Carbide |

Considering the locale, this one is also appropriate.

Considering the locale, this one is also appropriate.
That was my 2nd choice, I love Bad Religion.

Here is a second more detail-oriented site but if you're looking for a quick answer the former is what you want.

DM Carbide |

Oladon, what do you think of the changes to the fee structure at Patreon?

Oladon |
Honestly, my primary thought is "Ugh, now I have to find time to go through the hassle of transitioning off Patreon and onto something else."
I think it's a bad move on their part, and it will lose them the $5/mo or so that they're currently making off me... once I get around to figuring out a new setup. Right now I'm leaning toward just recommending that people use Square Cash (cash.me) to support my work.

DM Carbide |

I may have some time to post tomorrow, but after that I'll be extremely intermittent until the 27th or so. I wish you all a fine holiday, whatever you celebrate.

DM Carbide |

I'm dealing with a QA audit at work, and haven't had a chance to post. Will try to get something up tonight.

DM Carbide |

Too late at work to get to it. Man, audits suck.

DM Carbide |

Not an audit this week, but we've got a bunch of people coming over this weekend and I've been cleaning. Will likely get back to things Sunday.

DM Carbide |

Busy week at work, and today is my wife's birthday. Post tomorrow during the day.
