i love re-reading stuff, and catching that the wreck happened 6 miles south of town. aka 2 hours down the road. =D. i'll just keep it at 20 min down the road for my own sake. ( just in case you're wondering why 1 mile on the big picture takes an hour, but the distance between the road and the body marker is so far and only takes 20 minutes = )

I'm doing some preparations for rebuilding my character somewhat. I can make a Life Oracle work, or a slight tweak on the Cleric I'm playing now. Life Oracle would mean I'm dumping Strength altogether, so I won't be in melee anymore. I could still go in melee with Cleric 2.0, but he'll be much less combat-capable (meaning, a STR of 16 instead of 18). Which would you prefer? Ironically, the Life Oracle would still be better at channeling, even with the hit to point-buy points.
Also, GM, would you allow me to switch race as well? I'm not sure if I want to do so, but I'm eyeing that Halfling, and he looks appealing. Switching class/stats won't impact the story that much, switching race would undo part of the story so far.
Griffin Master
oh, its okay. you've not taken off your veils and robes and stuff yet. it could have all been an elaborate outfit or contraption of some sort that falls apart in the cold weather.
there seem to be two contenders for melee at the moment, Gondork and Caladan, so dropping front line or going from 18 to 16 won't be too much of a hit so far.
up to you.
if you do, just write in a little snippit for what happens in the morning / reintroduce yourself around the campfire or whatnot.
i presumed there's still channeling, if not, they'll just have to decide if they want to heal before they start out or not.

- rebuild goes for everyone, if you'd like to switch around a few things, feel free to overnight. just keep your sheet updated, or copy/paste it into your profile so i can see your stats in combats and the like.

I was thinking about doing something else completely but I think I'll stick to Gondork as he is now, I'm just too curious as to what an occultist might be capable of at higher levels. I might pick up a reach weapon though, but that'll probably be part of what the smith is making for us now right?
Quentin Coldwater
I don't think this is the best venue to test a build at higher levels, considering how slow we'll go through this. For what it's worth, I'm pretty content with my level 5 PFS Occultist. He's not super-powerful, but he's a great jack of several trades, depending on the implements you choose. I get pseudo-spells that are just slightly worse, but the versatility is awesome. The Transmutation school is just full of great combat-related stuff, from a one-man Haste to Enlarge Person. Ironically, my Abjuration school's what killed me, because without it I would've just been knocked into the negatives, rather than having to tank another hit.
What's your other idea?
Griffin Master
yar, i'm confused at the occultist's limited spell selection, but 3/4 bab basically.
its a very bizzar class.
Gondork Ramcleft
It is. I just figured that having some spells and interesting powers would make for a more versatile party member while keeping my AC high enough to tank some blows. A gish, basically.
Quentin Coldwater
Did some slight tweaking. Gave him more DEX, bit less INT and CON. Should be slightly more awesome with a bow now. Also gave him an alternate racial trait that gives me three cantrips and one first-level spell as a spell-like ability, so I can cast Endure Elements on myself for free. Hope that's okay.

yup, he's alive. if you catch up on the gameplay thread, they're just starting an encounter after a snowman trap alerted some ice creatures and pummeled Arwyn.
you're fresh since its a new day. some of the others are fatigued from nonlethal cold damage and Arwyn's just taken a lot of damage.
Griffin Master
re: cold damage, and how to recover from it.
i like the train of thought in this thread. you can't naturally heal from nonlethal cold damage from a cold environment until you've warmed up. But magical healing heals nonlethal damage as well as normal damage. The starvation hazard specifically calls out that even magical healing can't restore that damage. So lets go with that.
Griffin Master
for who? you didn't get healing this morning and no one channelled after the cold damage from travelling this morning.
Quentin Coldwater
Woo, you're a merciful god GM. I know some GMs who don't rule it as such. Shades of Ice 3 was nasty. :(
Similarly, there's some people who think energy resistance won't help against environment effects, as they're "damage over time" so to speak. Cold Res 5 means that from any direct cold source you negate 5, but you're not immune to the cold that seeps into your bones, so to speak. But maybe that's too harsh an interpretation. Rules themselves are vague about it.
Griffin Master
yeah, i let cold resistance help with that.
same way fire resist helps on the plane of fire. otherwise there's a lot of denizens that are just poorly designed for their own plane of existence. at resist 10 you're pretty much immune to the cold weather or hot weather with resist fire.
magic healing is magic. ::shrug:: if you were stuck without magic, it would suck.
How would the stagger work with my Binding Ties domain ability?
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/cleric/domains/paizo---domains /community-domain/family
I touch someone, I become staggered, they lose it? Seems a bit weird considering I might need to use pretty much my entire turn to use this (move up to the person, then standard to touch) to obtain a condition that won't even be relevant anymore, since I become staggered until the end of my turn, which is right then. Or would I be staggered next turn? Also, for honesty's sake, I forgot to add the -4 to my last attack roll for the snow. Don't suppose a 13 hits.
eh, it found a clear eddy in the snow, a brief respite in the snowfall that allowed it to strike.
as for the domain ability. it wouldn't be great for this since the numbing cold ability only staggers someone for one round. so you'd move up and take on the staggered condition as a standard action, freeing them, and making them immune to being staggered, which would effect you and them until the end of your next turn. you could end it as a free action, but then it just reverts back to the person you took it from. its not super useful here, but not completely a waste, since you could suck up someone's staggered condition so that they could move and attack this round. and then you live with the staggered by just firing an arrow or something the next round.

just an FYI guys... I've seen in posts mention of drawing shields and weapons and whatnot, and wanted to point out that you should already be traveling with them out.
@Gondork & kinda everyone -- when your AC on your sheet is listed including a shield bonus, it kind of presumes that you already have your shield out and on you while moving, marching or otherwise active. You don't have to then say you draw your shield, its presumed drawn. If you don't always have your shield out, don't include it in the default preset for AC.
Likewise @Caladan you're in a hostile forest. Some of you don't have a +1 bab yet. Its reasonable to consider that you'd be marching with a weapon drawn already, so you don't have to spend a move action to draw it in combat. I can understand if you've got a heavy shield, wanting to keep a hand free for spellcasting. Just pointing it out.
Its even reasonable to take one out when you encounter something odd ( like a snowman in the road ), to describe your character's reaction and what he/she might already have out or not.
I'm nitpicky when it comes to actions in combat, and I try to make best value assumptions to do what you're intending to do, but don't take environment or rules into consideration. Just trying to help.
Griffin Master
one good thing to remember when posting, don't just think of it as participating in a conversation. Consider it partaking in a narration.
for ex. we all know what transpired while caladan was unconscious. so don't just wake up and say what happened and wait for someone else to reply. they'll do that anyway when they post. commit to an action and narrate it. wake up and check out the elemental's bodies, wake up search the area, wake up and cross the stream, or flee.
they move the narration forward instead of waiting for participation.

i'm away this weekend in edinburgh, won't be checking in with wifi much. be back monday.
Griffin Master
there's two of them. Arwyn already has a composite longbow (+1 strength pull), Gondork has Arwyn's old longbow. Giacomo has to use small sized bows. so you should be fine taking one.
