DM Bloodgargler |

Hello all...
Since Tulkash decided to go about this backwards I thought I should too. Make the character you want, not what you think will buy you a spot.
20 point buy, core book, APG,UM,UC,Inner sea world guide and magic all usable, third party possible but vulnerable to tweaking, standard starting wealth....
I have just a couple house rules that I can think of off hand ..
I do stealth a little differently, I'll go into more detail if and when necessary but basically facing matters pre-combat when "stealthing."
Also BABs and multiclass. Fractions of BAB will count
Make your self at home and feel free to fire off questions.
I'll post more as I think of things.

Born in Ulfen, Sorcerer is the bastard child of a human woman and an elf father, whom she never met. Her status as the product of a union her grandparents expressly forbid gained her no love in her village, and her shyness and awkwardness did not help matters. Her manifestation of a necromantic sorcery bloodline was the last straw, and she was stripped her of her name and cast out of her village. Along and unwelcome in her homeland, Sorcerer drifted, seeking someplace of her own, eventually ending up in Brevoy. Perhaps here she will find a place in the world. All she knows is that there are bandits making people's lives miserable, and she can't bring herself to do nothing about it when she has the power to help.
Sorcerer is a woman of medium height, and despite being only half elven, she looks full elven and is usually mistaken as such. This is rather ironic, as she has never lived among elves, knows nothing of elven culture, and doesn't know a single word of the elven language. She has blond hair, green eyes, and a shy, withdrawn demeanor. She isn't very talkative and a paralyzing fear of social situations, but she has a very strong sense of right and wrong, and is willing to risk her life over it.
Though by RAW she should know elven and be literate, I decided to make her ignorant of elven and illiterate for RP reasons.

(This is Pezmerga)
Are changelings ok? I wanna play a Changeling Monk (if that's ok) and get feral combat training (eventually) to claw people. Not gonna try anything fancy, just thought it'd be neat.
If so here is the build. I altered a backstory that was to go with a ninja changeling for carrion crown, since I never got to play her.

Backstory (I can change it some if you want.)
I am Alice Morell. I am from the capital of Caliphus in the kingdom known as Ustalav. My adopted parents, Edmus and Marla Morell, are worshippers of Pharasma. They took me in as one of their own after finding me crying as a baby near the local market. They could not have children of their own, so they thought of me as a "blessing from Pharasma". Being mightily superstitious and religious they saw me as their chance to have a purpose in their lives, and gave me everything I could possibly need. My father is one of the heads of the Caliphus Temple of Pharasma and my mother was the daughter of a local councilman named Esteban Harmon.
I grew up a curious one, always seeking out adventure. One day on my 15th birthday, I had a strange urge to travel. To where I don't know. I told my parents and my father looked at me with great concern. He then forbid me to go and hurried off to the church saying he had matters to attend to. Being curious, and not able to resist the temptation of this..calling, I set out one night as quietly as possible. My journey took me to a remote location several days north (I believe Northeast). I saw strange ugly creatures who welcomed be with cackling glee by two terrible looking misshapen old women. Terrified I awaited these strange hags to prepare some sort of ritual, thinking I should run off.
My father slowly came to know what I really was, and was just trying to hide it from the other townsfolk who surely would cast judgement upon me. He knew all too well where I was headed and knew even with his forbiddence I would likely try to leave. He made a promise that he'd send me away if I were to be rescued to the other church heads. Not long after I left, he brought a few of the temple guards with him to find what he knew was a deadly hag coven. Luckily, for me anyway, they arrived in time to stop the ritual, defeating two of the hags and driving the third off. My father was badly wounded and one of the temple guards was slain. The journey back to town was met with disdain from all but my father, who had a silent solemn look on his face. Upon returning I slept in my bed one final time as I awoke to a tearful mother waking me for breakfast and helpign me pack. Few words were spoken, but my father mentioned a old friend south near the kingdom of Brevoy.
His name was Sendu Phu. He was the master of a temple of fighters who called themselves monks. They honed their skills and took great pride in perfecting themselves. I was intimidated at first, but Sendu Phu saw potential in me. Since I was stuck there for the time being, I decided to try and make the best of it. I trained hard with my fellow class mates. It was apparent I was definately behind them in terms of skill, but amazingly I closed the gap fairly quickly. Years passed and I was now growing into a full grown woman. I earned my peers trust and respect. Now it was time for me to head out into the world to leave my mark, as all of my fellow classmates were to do. I heard rumors of great opportunity in Brevoy, so I decided to head there... Little did I know, that I would wind up doing more than I ever could have imagined.

Alice Morell |

Actually I wanna change my stats from:
Strength 16
Dexterity 14
Constitution 10
Intelligence 10
Wisdom 17
Charisma 9
to
Strength 16
Dexterity 14
Constitution 10
Intelligence 12 (Taking Giant as my Bonus Language. No reason really except that nothing else stands out to me.)
Wisdom 16
Charisma 9
And take the Favored Class Hit Point.
So I'd have 9 HP. (and still have 5 skill points first level.)
Oh and I guess I should mention I took Hulking Changeling as my Hag trait. (+1 Melee damage).
Also you mentioned house rules.
Do you use any alternate rules such as hero points? Just wondering for clarification.

DM Bloodgargler |

@Alice - nope I don't use hero points. I don't really have too many character generation house rules.
@Simon - okie doke ... we'll take a look then
@Xzaral - druid would fit well .. feel free to think out loud here if you have a feel for what kind of druid you would like to make and care for some input.
@Rogar - that works.. just come up with some background when you can

Considering fighter/cavalier/monk so far, melee as a focus I think might be out. I started reading Treantmonk's guide to get a feel for some ideas. I'm kinda liking the caster druid idea at present (plus I normally play casters so easier transition to something different). Problem is it doesn't seem to come into it's own until level 5 and that's a ways off.
Edit Also discussing Here

Some good advice there ... I'd also add that if you would like to work toward a caster emphasized build, some domain powers can help shore up the early levels... the wis bonus + 3 times a day ranged touch attacks are great first few levels.

Simon Hayes |

The cavalier I'm working on will be more on the diplomatic side than the melee one. Thinking also about taking 1 or 2 levels of bard to open the perspective for battle herald.
Up to know I have this sketch
Cavalier
Order (Shield or Blue Rose)
Archetype ?
STR 14 -> 16
DEX 10
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 13
CHA 15
Alignment LN or LG
I was thinking a cheliaxan noble born that got sick of the evil doings of the establishment and lured the land until he found the chance to build a kingdom that could be home to rightful men and women.
Apart from what written in the crunch I'm open to suggestions on the build to better fit in the party, both on RP (if somebody wants to intersect the backgrounds) and mechanics (e.g. I have to chose a teamwork feat, so if somebody was thinking about one that could be a boost for the party).
Moreover
Got a question for the DM and I would like to to ask it now to clear the path ahead from arguments.
The issue is about Versatile performance and what happens to feats and skill points that affects dropped skills.
With VP the bard is essentially able to substitute 2 skills with a performance. But the rules are a little obscure on what happens to bonuses to such skills, e.g. the character takes Persuasive, so +2 to Diplomacy and Intimidate. Then takes VP on Keyboards, does he practically lose the feat? What happens to the skill points put in the skills, did they become useless?
in this topic there is a discussion about it, message 20 and 25 are James Jacobs'. I'm happy with whatever the decided ruling is, I just want to know it before starting to play.

BoggBear |

Hmm, yes, I think that is a fair point.
Indeed, since many Oracles come from primitive cultures, it would not be a far stretch to think that the simmering rage of a barbarian lurked just below the surface anyway.
But for flavour reasons I think I would take lv 2 as a Barbarian.
The green man was a force of battle, nature and vitality.
Thus battle, life or nature would be the best mystery.
I was unable to find a way to get to pick revelations from two, let alone three, so I need to decide which mystery is most fit for him.
Once that is done, I'll finish the rest up in no time.

![]() |

Tough call. It would depend on the fights honestly. I've always been a fan of 'kill fast, heal later', which would favor the barbarian. But with a group of 6 and a druid the only healer type, we could get in a pinch with after battle healing resources. Also dependent on battles/day of course. I don't think you'd go wrong with either type to be honest.

DM Bloodgargler |

@simon - what you have so far looks good ... as for VP, haven't encountered that issue before.. not sure how I'd handle it. First glance I'd say either make SF and other +skill feats stack or switch out when you level would be fine. I'll look into it more an let you know for sure asap, but I won't stick you with a useless feat.
@BoggBear- I think wood mystery in ultimate magic would fit as well.

DM Bloodgargler |

@Simon - OK how I will do it is VP class feature will have added effect of adding +skill feat bonus to linked perform skill ... but bonus will not stack with -skill focus (specific perform skill). So with your example you would keep full bonus of persuasive to add to perform(keyboard) skill check, but if you were to take skill focus(keyboard) your persuasive bonus would be eclipsed by the higher bonus of the skill focus.
I hope I fully comprehend the problem and that this an acceptable solution.

DM Bloodgargler |

@chainmail (cc@raventhorn+dathom) - sorry not at the moment ... once I get this going I would like to start another first week or two of January. If you don't find anything by then I will give preference to raventhorn, dathom, and you.... and like this group give you a week or so to catch it before opening up your spot to others.
@current group - I've been thinking about traits .. if there are traits that you feel are important to your build, or perfectly fits your character.. go ahead. I like using traits as a way to make good bio fluff be worth a point or two of something..So if you would like to leave a trait or two empty, I'll give you trait equivalent suggestions until you stop saying no.

Rogar Valertis |

The Valertis family was hit hard by the defeat: they lost their head and their best fighters and much of their lands to the invaders. Suddenly they were impoverished and left with just some minor rural holdings. They had much honor, great past glories and a noble title the Rogarvia confirmed despite the Valertis apparent disdain for those who decimated them. They rapidly found out how those were inadequate resources for the new era, and faded into obscurity, remembering what they were but unable to reach for the same glories they had considered their birthright just some years before. They were just another impoverished noble family unable to keep up with the times and living in the past because the present was too painfull to contemplate.
Rogar is just the last of a long line Valertis, too proud to bend their knee to any lord yet too poor to matter on their own.
The first of 3 sons he showed great promise with the sword. He was accepted as a page to an actual Swordlord at the age of 10 and distinguished himself in his training. Sadly he was also an hothead who rarely thought before acting, he had great appreciation for gambling and women, all traits his master, Albash Garess an ascetic aged swordlord from the easter reaches of the kingdom, deemed detrimental to his growth on the way of the sword. For a time Albash hoped to change the boy, but after a particularly embarassing episode involving a game of cards and two noble girls from New Seteven he felt forced to send Rogar away. Now 17 and knowing he had shamed himself and probably ruined his family last chance at redemption the young warrior decided to live on his own, living as litte more than a bravo and lending his sword to the cause of those who cpuld pay him. He reached Restov and made a living there, squandering his ill-gotten gains in women, alchool and gambling. From time to time Rogar felt shame for his actions but he never could summon the courage to go back home and admit his failure, but those thoughts were usually forgotten after a pint or two.
Rogar life could have gone on forever that way, if not for a duel: Rogar had fought several duels and prevailed in most. He was well known and quite respected among Restov's unquiet youths as a precise, determined blade, as ready with the duelling sword at sunset as with the wenches in the common room. Given his reputation there were a lot of young nobles and students who searched him out for a challange to prove themselves against a former sword-page, and Rogar always took their challanges... and their money. So it was no surprise when one evening a young blonde guy, small of frame and quite feminine looking challanged him. What was surprising was the challanger actually was a woman, Minar Teydosu. Rogar wanted to refuse and made to walk away... then she insulted him calling him craven and proclaming him a shame to the Valertis name. Rogar lost his head and took the challange, in his rage he attacked and attacked but the girl deftly doged all of his clumsy attempts and when he started to feel tired passed to the offensive, disarming him with one last masterful stroke. Rogar, filled with rage but determined to hear what the girl demanded of him asked Minar what was she wanted and she simply handed him a sheet of paper and said "Redeem yourself as the first of the Aldori did before you", then without any other words she moved away and vanished as if made out of thin air. Startled Rogar searched for her in the alley of Restov for the whole noght then, exausted, he remembered the writ she had given him. At dawn he started to read it and suddenly it was like dawn had also come for his life. After a very long time he knew what he had to do to take control of his life again, wasting no time he went to enlist for the expedition in the Stolen Lands...

Simon Hayes |

I just wanted to be clear from the beginning. The ruling is fine with me

Norton Ambrosi |

Here is the cavalier
I put there the natural born leader trait. I'll wait for comments
Still missing on feats, and evaluating the chance to get the Honor Guard archetype, I think it fits with the bio.
I used 1 gp or 2 more than average for the class, but it was on camping gear, I hope that's cool
So up to now we have (from what I get)
Sorcerer: short range caster with survival, half elf and outcast
Alice: melee combatant with bluff and disguise abilities, kind of outcast herself too
Rogar: melee agile fighter, of ancient roots, impulsive and with a past to redeem
Norton: melee combatant going for diplomacy, chelish noble who was sick with evil
Xzaral: going druid
BoggBear: barbarian/oracle
Is that right?

DM Bloodgargler |

@Rogar - looks good .. plenty to work with thanks
@Norton - natural born leader works, Honor guard is a natural fit with both your bio and order of the shield, so go ahead and take it if you care to.
yep your assessment of group so far seems right. Can't really say why I like the group make-up without giving away things ... but I like it.

Rogar Valertis |

I'm not sure on how to build Rogar: I could go full warrior (with the archetype) or I can multiclass duellist once I reach the prerequisites for truly epic AC. Rogar is going to be susceptible to mind control spells and the like, so I'll need to find some ways to defend against those. Besides that the Aldori Swordlord archetype is very much tied to the use of the Aldori Duelling Sword, hope We can manage to find some (shouldn't bee to difficult considering where the stolen lands are...)

DM Bloodgargler |

@Rogar - you start with one with the sword scion trait ... that trait is pretty essential to your build and makes more sense for you to start with one. (unless you are talking about once magic weapons start dropping not your starting weapon... even in that case, you're right, more likely to find one in stolen lands than most other places)

Bregor Rowain |

Well, I think that should about do it, The Green man is ready for perusal.
I decided to pick the life Mystery.
The skill it gives him some connection to nature, the revelations boosts his vitality, and the Barbarian/Raging Prophet takes care of the battle bit.

DM Bloodgargler |

@Kelsey That's one thing I'm working on today .. one I was thinking for you before I was fully awake involves what the pioneer trait receives. I see it as a result of your elven and undeath heritage. While animals don't seem to particularly like you, they seem to respect you somehow ... including a "long-in-the-tooth" horse that started following you ever since you came across it by the side of the road, near a looted and stripped corpse half-hidden in the bushes. +1 trait bonus to animal handling and an old emotionless horse.
Another would be something to do with learning to live with being illiterate, and as a result have learned how to read people and situations. +1 to sense motive and treat as class skill.
... or if you would like to re-skin something to give you survival as a class skill +1 trait bonus, we could come up with something for that.

Ta'de-win of the Gale |

All right, here's the druid. I apologize now for the background, but I tend to write them in prose out of habit without thinking, though I did cut it short (I might go back and polish it abit, but the basic concepts are there).
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

DM Bloodgargler |

sure.. not quite enough of a bonus to be two full traits though.
for your consideration
Child of the grave +1 trait bonus to saves vs Negative energy, energy drain, and death magic. -OR- vs school of necromancy?
Grave whisperer +1 to knowledge checks regarding undead and +1 CL to spells with fear descriptor.
