Best of luck to everyone, it's not going to be easy for the dm.

Hah... if we made it easy than it would be a bad sign for interest. Good luck everyone, especially to our GM.

Ha, fair enough.

You know what? Just for variety, I'm going to wish us all horrible luck. The character selection process is a zero sum game, so it all works out the same in the end.

Well said.

Unfortunately didn't get time to add more to my background. That blurb from yesterday will have to do. Added it to my profile. Good luck to all. :)

If you would have pity on a noob...[meant to post last night, but the board were down...

After Devereux was orphaned as a young child, he grew up a street rat of Korvosa. He did what he had to do to survive, and that mostly meant stealing food and sleeping in alleyways. Gangs and criminals often used street rats as look outs or distractions, and that’s what caught the eye of one Gaedren Lamm. Devereux was used as a look out for a robbery of a gem cutter in the merchant district. He was to be a distraction if the town guard came early. They did come early, and Deveroux did an admirable job in leading them off. After the caper, Devereux went back to his hovel to find the city guard waiting for him and just enough evidence to frame him!
Sergeant Wallace knew a Gaedren Lamm frame job when he saw it, and took pity on the boy. He helped thru the justice system and got parole, with the stipulation that Wallace would be his guardian. He could never join the Town Guard with this on his record, but Wallace taught him the meaning of justice…
Now Devereux makes his living collecting bounties in the slums of Korvosa, bringing to justice those who the law can’t find, always looking to even the score with Gaedren…

Updated the backstory to account for the drug addiction campaign trait and finished items.

I realized I didn't roll my ability scores correctly, I dropped the lowest before rerolling 1's and 2's, so if I get selected I'll have to adjust them slightly.

Just as a friendly FYI, you have until midnight Eastern Standard Time adjust your characters as you see fit. At present the existing 3 characters are two vigilantes and their brawler butler.

@GM stormcrow27: I just wanted to follow up on this question:

As far as my black blade (Bladebound) and hexcrafter archetypes go, I was thinking that he found the unusual blade (which didn't detect as magical) in a magic shop. The cutlass is marked with Desnan butterfly and is obviously high quality, but it's origin is unknown. It was found as part of expedition into Thassilonian ruins and it's unknown how long it was there. @GM stormcrow27 How would you prefer to handle its further backstory and intelligence? Would you want to incorporate that into your plans for the game (if I am selected) or should I think more about the nature of the blade?

I also wanted to add that I'm thinking that I'd like to tie the blade to the Varisian harrow tradition (which is the tie to hexcrafter as I plan to take Fortune and possibly healing and/or flight).

I'll see if I can't get my backstory done by 9PM my time (PST). :)

I can do that pretty easily. Desna wasn't a big goddess in Thassilon, so it was probably crafted after the big meteor impact that I can never remember the name of.

Earthfall?

Ouachitonian wrote:

Yup. I keep thinking starfall or something crash. At least it wasn't god oriented like the Cataclysm on Krynn in Dragonlance. If you have to drop asteroids to clear out your worshippers and bring back your beliefs, you might want to reexamine your pantheon a bit.

Oh, no bard? The player must have changed their mind. Also, when did the brawler show up? And should martial characters even bother waiting for the results at this point?

Of course they should, but should you want to retune your brawler into a bard you have (looks at clock) about 6 hours and 15 minutes to do so. ;)

Io Dorean wrote:

You know that thing I said about my sorcerer level just being a dip? Yeah, forget I said that. Those cantrips will be prized above all else. And... um... wands! Lots and lots of wands!

I think I might want to put more than 1 rank in UMD at this point.

Heh, I am going to keep Quintus as is. He is tanky with his full plate and tower shield, and enough hp to keep folks busy with him while he smashes them with his Warhammer of Doom. Plus his INT score gives him a wide array of skills (I might not have spent them ideally MIN/MAX wise, but they all have a place RP wise with his backstory) so I am not just "Block with shield, smash with hammer."

Still, good luck to all.

Sounds good. And yea, I was thinking it would have just lain there after it's previous owner ran into... let's say difficulties.

This is about where I'm at. While I could easily (My amazing rolls helped a ton) retool much of Io into a more magical character, it simply doesn't fit. She hates magic. She uses it as a tool, but she's forsworn her mastery of the arcane for personal reasons. Might she end up in a pseudo-healer role? Maybe. I should actually put an extra rank in heal, come to think of it.

I'll keep Lucien as a Ranger. He'll get a few spells (and, perhaps more importantly, ability to use a lot of wands) in a couple of levels. It is too bad there's no Sable Company Marine version of the Hunter, though. It'd be really easy to do, since the archetype is basically just two feats added to your style options. It'd be easy to add them to the Hunter's teamwork feats instead.

Huh. I'd actually considered going oracle, but I always play oracles, so I ended up going Telekineticist.

I'm going to hold on to hope, as Headsman doesn't work as another class, at least the way I'd envisioned him. Worst case, back to waiting for another CotCT, I guess.

What kind of skillset do the two vigilantes have?

One is a gunsmith/wildsoul (falconer) and the other is a teisatsu. So shoot and jump with the other having ninja tricks, and both are dex based. And just because we have two of them plus a brawler doesn't mean I will not select another martial character. I judge stuff on story first and fit second, because you can always spend more gold to get one shot items or hire a cleric, and there are a ton of support NPCs in this that make cohorts or contacts etc. Plus the healer's handbook is out which allows even non-magical people to be lesser healbots.

Arcane casters with a few ranks of Use Magic Device also work a treat for healing people up with curing wands.

Two hours before the cutoff, and time for me to get some sleep.

Good luck again, everyone!

Ok, I added a bit more to backstory and added a blurb on what motivates Zuri. It's all in my profile but I've copied it here for convenience as well. Best of luck to all. :)

Background:

Zurisatro Jubrayl Vascari is Varisian, born and bred. Unlike many of his people, he's never known the joys of the roads. His family was forced to sell their wagon, to pay the fees demanded by the Church of Abadar for their healing, and so they have been stranded in Korvosa since before he was born. By the time he was born, his parents had given up on hoping to escape the city, instead focusing on the day to day difficulties of survival. His father, in a particular moment of desperation, turned to his reviled Sczarni cousins for work. Now bound to the thug-like gangs, he served as an enforcer for years until he picked a fight with the wrong shop-keep and was badly wounded. What little his family had saved crumbled, and young Zuri saw his family move to the slums of the Shingles where they would live until this day.

Growing up in the Shingles, he knew only poverty and want until his brother sought to serve in the Sczarni gangs, as his father had before him. His elder brother became involved with increasingly less savory peers as he sought to earn the money to see his family safe. Zurisatro worshiped his older brother, and so he followed his brother when he was asked to help despite his misgivings about the muggings, petty theft, and worse that he was now involved in. While serving as a spotter for an ambitious burglary (against a Cerulean society protected target), he missed the approach of a group of the Cerulean society who had gotten wind of the attack. In the ensuing carnage, Zurisatro escaped, but his brother was not so lucky.

Distraught and guilt-ridden, he sought the aid of family and the guards to bring his brother's murderers to justice, but no one would help. Disillusioned by the guard's apathy and convinced now that his Sczarni 'family' and its crime were poison, he fell into period of deep depression. Only his sister's optimism, even in the face of these seemingly overwhelming odds, turned him from his despair. With time, and his sister's support, he was able to help his family eke out an existence by begging, doing odd work, and anything else he could to make a pinch (copper) or, rarely, a shield (silver).

In a stroke of luck, he had the fortune of cleaning for a forcibly-retired master of the Acadamae. The man, Eugeni, who rejected the darker turn towards Diabolism the Acadamae has made under Cheliaxian influence, was so impressed that he agreed to take him as his sole apprentice. Since that day, he has begun to master the arts of magic and blade. He has proved a rapacious student. Training in both sword craft and magic (and fed properly for the first time in his life), Zurisatro has grown strong and quick both mentally and physically. He has been taking work as a private guard where his arcane and martial prowess has proved lucrative. He recently sought to gather his sister away with him, only to find her missing. Fearing to lose his only remaining sibling and his closest friend, he has decided that he will recover her from her abductor, no matter the cost.

Appearance:

Standing at a slightly above average six feet tall, Zurisatro has a lithe build that belies his actual strength. Like many of his people, he has trouble growing facial hair and prefers to keep clean shaved (particularly as it is stereotypical for Sczari thugs to have a patchy beard). His large eyes are unusually bright blue that borders on turquoise. His jet black hair is often let to grow out and it's not uncommon for him to tie it back in a rough pony tail. He tends to wear his familial scarf no matter the time of day or what he happens to be doing.

Motivations:

Zurisatro has lived a life of poverty that he's only recently, through a stroke of great luck, escaped from. With his newly won abilities, he's begun to do what work he can to help the rest of his parents and sister escape from crippling poverty. His extended family, who are too tightly enmeshed in the Sczarni gangs, might take his money but wouldn't change their ways. He feels obligated to help them, but increasingly sees their lifestyle as a poison which will corrupt all who are near it. His brother and father's 'victimization' at the hands of the Sczarni and the damage they do to his people's reputation has grown into a burning anger in recent years.

Despite his anger at his own people, he is more furious at the greater Korvosan establishment. Varisians are treated as a mere step up from vermin despite many of the city having some of his people's blood flowing in their veins. He has seen, his entire life, the grinding and horrific conditions of the poor of the city and the contempt with which the law treats them. It's not rare that he has to walk the other way when he sees a member of the Abadaran church, lest he spit on the clergyman and earn the guard's ire. He, like much of his family, attributes the church with much of the blame for their current predicament. He longs to see his family restored to the life they knew as wanderers. His reverence for the goddess Desna, patron of travelers, luck, and dreams is likely a direct result of those desires.

He might not admit it, but there's also a part of him that feels that he could see his people's image righted in the city. His conflicting anger and contempt for the people of Korvosa battles with an outsider's desire for acceptance. His friendship with Eugeni, a Korvosan through and through, has slowly opened his eyes to the reality of a city in constant flux that tries its hardest to resist them. Only time will tell how he will continue to see the world.

Good luck, everyone. May the best backstory win.

Out of curiosity, since you picked up an extra player, are there still three spots open, or is it only two now?

Sczarni

All the vigilantes! That's fine, I'll still keep my Crispy M*+~+$%%#*+$, because he is a work of art. Party balance means little to me; it's all about cool characters.

Well, will have to check back in the morning to find out. Looking forward to knowing who gets selected for this, and no matter who is in I am sure it will be a fun game. Sweet dreams all, and may the odds ever favor your characters.

3. It's pretty easy to up CR by 1 or 2 even for Pbp, and I like bigger parties due to all of my old nostalgia for 2nd and 1st Ed adventures.

Grand Lodge

I never played 1st or 2nd did they balance or attempt to balance 3.5 and PF around smaller groups because it was easier on the GM?

I first played with AD&D 1 back in the stone age (not literally, of course, I'm not that old).

Although the biggest problem was finding a time agreeable for everyone to play.

Especially if players had those annoying "job" things! :o

Smaller groups seem to be a function of greater freedom in character creation. Early editions had much more specialized roles for PCs and not much customization. So only bigger parties could fill all roles.

I go way back, and I've never had the impression that making things easier for the DM/GM was an issue until recently.

This just occurred to me. Since you have at least two vigilantes in the group pending; if Jember, a godling, gets accepted, you are halfway to getting your very own Korvosa Avengers!
Just a thought.

Pick a barbarian, (ahem) and you'll have a Hulk, too.

Do not forget the black panther...lol

My angel character can become large and certain angels are green. Well this game just got interesting.

My character's sort of Hawkeye...except riding a Hippogriff (eventually)

I assume recruitment is closed now. When is the decision?

Yep, recruitment is closed but no word on when the lucky three are to be chosen... to be fair, a lot of applicants to go through, so I am (sort of) being (trying to anyway) patient.

Of course, just take *ahem* a shield champion brawler, and grab Captain America as well.

I picture Xilfæ'îr having a personality more like Lagertha from Vikings.
But with more of a temper and less patience! :o

Heh, Quintus would be more of a Max Paine type guy... not very pleasant, very obsessed with finding his wife's killer, but still trying to keep within the bounds of law to an extent.

Griffith/Caisramriel is a kind hearted soul, but if wronged he will enact a righteous fury. Believes in second chances and redemption, will korvosa spit him out?

Working on selection. I apologize for the delay, but I had to finish up some things for the two vigilantes on backstory.

The suspense!!

… complete with a prolonged drum-roll, and everything!
