Crypt of the Everflame

Game Master TheGodd*mnGM

The young heroes of the town of Kassen are ready for their coming-of-age ceremony, an old tradition in which they retrieve a piece of the eternal flame burning in the tomb of the town’s founder. Yet when they arrive there, they find only the corpses of their fellow townsfolk, dead bandits, and mysterious animated skeletons. The novice heroes must brave the traps and perils of the Crypt of the Everflame, discover the source of the corruption that has awakened an ancient evil, and defeat a menace that seeks vengeance against Kassen and its people.

With the stall on the Kingmaker thread I have decided to start up a game myself. I chose the Crypt of the Everflame as its very familiar to me and I personally like to run modules that flow into Homebrew. So we will be playing Crypt of the Everflame, Mask of the Living God, and the City of Golden Death. So we will get to at least level 5. If it continues to work and people want to go on we can.

Crunch:

Ability Scores:
Roll 4d6, drop the Lowest
Point Buy 20

Classes:
Core, Base, Hybrid, and Kineticist and Psychic; Path of War

Starting Wealth:
Average for your class

Races:
Core only, other races will need discussion
Demographics for Kassen - 93% human, 3% halfling, 2% half-orc, 1% elf, 1% half-elf

Origins:
It would make more sense if you where a Local, or from a neighboring town. Somewhere you would have heard of the Quest.

Traits:
You can have 2 Traits, and no drawbacks. No Rich Parents or Chosen Child.

Level:
Level 1

Where would we be playing:
Here on Paizo forum

How many people in the party:
4 at most, 1 place reserved

Paizo only right? Warlord is not quite as good fit here as for Kingmaker, but I'm still curious if it is an option.

What is starting gold?

4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 3) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 6) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 3) = 12 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 2) = 8 6
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 2) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 2) = 12 10

Are there any conditions for rerolls or point buy instead? My rolls came out equivalent to -4 point buy.

Oh ouch. (Added 20 Point Buy)
I do not know Path of War very well, but Dreamscarred is one of my favorites so I will permit them.

Dotting! :)

4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 6) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 4) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 4) = 16 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 5) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 6) = 19 18
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 5) = 13 11

I can certainly work with that. I never played Crypt of the Everflame - we start as 1 and go up to what level, if we level at all?

Well the three modules that make up the Price of Immortality goes up to 5, but we will go on in my own homebrew if there is still interest.

Does that there are no rerolls under any condition? (I would suggest allowing a reroll if the total result is less than 15 point buy, though you might want an even lower powerlevel)

I was thinking of that. Yours was what 12 point buy. I will allow a reroll if you end up with more then one 8 in a roll.

The previous one was -4 point buy, quite a bit less than 12. Let's see what the next one brings:

4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 4) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 4) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 6) = 19 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 5) = 17 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 4) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 1) = 11 10

That's equivalent to 22 point buy, certainly much better.

I didn't drop your lowest when I was counting your point buy so I went with the 15,14,12,12,8,8 which is 12. You are right though yours was much lower.

I'm considering a white haired witch // Warder, however I have a few questions about the white haired witch. The archtype doesn't mention if the intelligence is used for attack rolls as well with the hair. Can I use intelligence for attack rolls just like for prehensile hair? Secondly, the archtype recived quite a few nerfs through errata, making it much harder to use action-economy wise. Action economy is already hard enough to figure out in gestalt. Would you allow me to go with the unerrataed version where constrict, trip and pull are free actions?

Three types of actions for free seems a little much. Pick one of the three as a free action.
Also yes you can use INT to Hit

I am curious has anyone used focus foible? Does it work ok for stats?

Focus and foible is great imho. I've used it a couple times and it generally turns out more reasonable than rolling 4d6.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 3) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 6) = 18 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 5) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 1) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 2) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 4) = 13 12

I have run a few rolls using the 1d10+7 and they do seem far more balamced.

If you all like you can try the 4d6 drop the lowest, 20 pt buy, or focus foible.

DOT

Stats:

Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 4) = 18 16
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 3) = 17 14
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 3) = 13 10
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 4) = 17 15
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 6) = 12 11
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 2) = 10 8

I'll get this rolling tomorrow. Have a game to run at my house in a few minutes :)

I used it for the WotW AP, at the creators suggestion. I actually just ended up giving out 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8. Worked well too.

Background:
Riinak was once a member of the Pitstrider tribe of kobolds, a relatively prosperous tribe that live a few miles from Kassen proper, never close enough to conveniently raid, though both are aware the other exists. Riinak was hatched with golden scales, fairly short (even for a kobold), and a habit of making shadow puppets, which he used to entertain hatchlings while watching the nursery, but sadly found little for elsewhere in the tribe. As a result, he was mocked incessantly for his odd looks and quirky behavior, driving him to ever greater and more dangerous self-imposed "tests", intent on proving he belonged among his tribe mates. His desire for approval came to a nearly disastrous end when, in another bid to prove himself, got separated and driven off from his tribe while attacking a band of chokers roaming too close to the tribe's snarl.

Alone and nervous, Riinak was approached by a curious, pure white toad who seemed to take a liking to the kobold, but never came too close. Using his last torch, Riinak did the only thing he knew how to do properly: make shadow puppets. His canny imitation of the toad seemed to win the creature over, and on befriending the lonely kobold led him down a winding stretch of caverns. Their destination shocked the kobold immensely: the toad (whom he'd come to call Blot) had led him into the den of an ancient golden dragon, named Dovarinox. Groveling before the mighty creature, Dovarinox took the kobold in and under his wing (literally and figuratively), teaching the kobold in a variety of subjects, chiefly about Apsu and how to fight in his name. He also did his best to help the kobold rebuild his self-esteem, realizing that much of what held Riinak back was his own feeling of inadequacy.

For two years, Riinak trained relentlessly under Dovarinox's tutelage, but the ancient dragon grew worried that his pupil would never grow further if he did not have courage to leave the dragon's lair. Dovarinox decided to bring the kobold above the ground and into the small town of Kassen, a village he had watched over since its founding ages ago. Under the guise of a human, Dovarinox brought Riinak to the local cathedral, speaking with Father Prasst about the kobold continuing his studies in the church, hoping that exposure to other races and religions would help broaden the Riinak's mind and improve his outlook. Father Prasst relented upon realizing who Dovarinox was, and agreed that the kobold could take up residency within the church so long as he behaved himself and understood that the people of Kassen would likely be nervous about him living here. Although reluctant to leave the safe familiarity of his master's den, Riinak agreed to the dragon's request. And Riinak would not be alone - his constant companion, Blot, would be at his side, helping to guide and watch over him. Dovarinox told Riinak that the toad was special, and that he should look out for Blot's safety, a task Riinak would've gladly done without prompting.

For the past year, the residents of Kassen have kept a watchful eye on the church, waiting for the day Riinak would slip up and attack someone. However, Riinak has pushed himself to not only rise to the high standards of the townsfolk, but stand tall above them, continuing his daily training in the art of war, religion and, hardest of all, gaining confidence in himself. However, with the annual quest for the Everflame coming up, Riinak (on Father Prasst's suggestion and encouragement) has asked to participate in the quest, hoping that by completing the quest, he can win over the townsfolk and prove once and for all that he is a peaceful resident of Kassen.

Personality:
Riinak suffers from severe self-esteem issues, stemming from years of mockery at the hands of his former tribe mates in the Pitstriders. As a result, Riinak continues to strive higher in spite of his accomplishments, believing that no matter how well he has done, he can and should do better. The harsh glares and cautious looks the people of Kassen give him do not abate his belief that he must always strive to do better. As a consequence, Riinak suffers from a consistently low opinion of himself, tending to overlook his successes in favor of focusing on his errors, making him a tough self-perfectionist. However, he tries hard to put up a confident and solid front, though neither Dovarinox nor Father Prasst are fooled by this show; both are able to see right through his show.

Riinak's gold scales, odd habits and short stature are things the kobold is not particularly proud of, and is constantly working to prove that his small size and relative weakness are something that he can overcome. This makes the subjects a sensitive topic for the kobold to discuss, and as such, can get easily riled up and eager to challenge those who would belittle or demean his abilities. In particular, calling him a "lizard" gets him hopping mad, and despite his best efforts, he has trouble restraining himself against those who mock him with such a name. Despite his relative unease with other people, Riinak is remarkably good with animals (he enjoys visiting the stables to feed the horses when he can, and Father Prasst's visitors usually concede the kobold is well suited to taking care of their beasts of burden). Riinak's bond with animals is most obviously exemplified by his close relationship with his toad partner, Blot, who is rarely away from the kobold's side. Although he appears a simple toad, Blot seems to have a strange 6th sense about a variety of things, and if he insists on heading a particular way, Riinak readily follows.

In spite of his perceived flaws, Riinak is a very devout and kind soul, ready to step up and protect those who need help. His years of training, meditation and study have made him more knowledgeable and smart than he gives himself credit for, and his daily training has helped to overcome the weaknesses his race is famous for, able to walk in broad sunlight and hit harder than even some of the town guards. Those who break through his facade as a calm, collected creature will not only find his low perception of himself, but also a loyal and dedicated friend who will readily lay down his life for justice, peace, and the prosperity of others.

Liberty's Edge

stat 1: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 5) = 14
stat 2: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 4) = 13
stat 3: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 3) = 11
stat 4: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 5) = 17
stat 5: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 1) = 12
stat 6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 5) = 14

12, 9, 10, 13, 11, 13

lol, I'm in the same boat as oyzar. I'm rocking an 8 point buy here. If allowed I also would like call a "misroll".

stat 1: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 3) = 21
stat 2: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 3) = 18
stat 3: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 3) = 12
stat 4: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 2) = 12
stat 5: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 4) = 14
stat 6: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 3) = 12

18, 15, 11, 10, 12, 11

Equates to a 28 point buy. Let me know if you will allow this "reroll" or in you want me to go with the 20pt build.

Also... I was a fan of D&d 4e warlord. Would you allow a 3pp? here is the link for it on d20: Warlord

My concept will be an inspiring melee "captain".

He will combine warlord (if approved) and bard. Wielding a shield (shield bash build) in one hand and a flag/banner (flagbearer feat) in the other. He will lead from the frontline, empowering his allies.

The reroll is fine. I will read the class but for now it's gotta be a no. I just don't know it.

Riinak also. This is gestalt. So you get a secondary class for him.

Liberty's Edge

If you get a chance to look it over, great. Not much to review with it, it's pretty simple (only a few non-complicated class features), but I can always use Brawler: Shield champion instead and get fairly close to the same concept.

Thank you for your flexibility on the roll and (possibly) a class... in the interest of character development!

hi there GM. New here to the site. I am an old 2nd ed -3.5 ed player. Just got done reading a guide on the changes from 3.5 to pathfinder. Wondering if I can join. I would only be interested in playing base classes and races. However,I am not very sure on how to use this site to play (evoking dice rolls, etc). Still have room, and how often will the game be?

(I bought the maximum humblebundle, so i gots the books)

Not a problem you use Dice inside boxes [] like [Dice]4d6[/ dice] without the space to roll.

Quest of the Everflame is amazing for beginners I use it to run new players. It will be casual online PbP so this means you will post as your character probably once a day.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

so there is room then, innit? Let us see if this works.

4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 5, 6) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 1, 5) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 5) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 4) = 19 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 6) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 3, 1) = 10 9

13, 13, 15, 15, 14, 9 not bad rolls.

You could also use focus foible.
So 18, 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

yea thats not bad. Ghestalt, huh? So Human monk/cleric sound ok?

Yeah. They work well. I use unchained monk. It can be found on the pfd20 srd.

I see unchained monk. I dont mind using that. How do I keep track of the character. Some kind of program or just on my end?

Mythweavers is a good site. But you can create aliases and edit your profile to have all the information. Click on your name (The blue one) and it will give you a page that says edit your profile.

Focus Foible
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
18
8

Wow Nice rolls
49 Point Buy

How does this look? http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=733424

I like my original rolls. hehe

You can move the 1 from Misc to Dodge in your AC. I had to read through to figure it out. Makes it more clear. Also you have a Full BAB, but your sheet says 0. So adjust that.

TheGodd*mnGM wrote:

It has been done. Also, i added 2 traits.

Crud.. I think I am confused about as to what stacks in gestalt lol
(fixed that too)

Right I get another class! ... Give me a little bit to think on that one.

Rolls...

Spoiler:
4d6b3?

4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4, 3) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 3) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 2) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 4) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 4) = 16
14, 14, 12, 11, 12, 13

or Focus/Foible?

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

18, 17, 15, 11, 8, 8

Hmm. That last one would be a perfect caster, but I was more into a martial of some kind, probably Lore Warden Martial Master Fighter on one side, and something that benefits from intelligence at least a little on the other side.

That means I'd be looking at 18/11/15/17/8/8, which is a little bad for the will save, but I can probably make it work.

Riinak updated! Decided to go with Bard using the Arcane Duelist, build off his Charisma and bolster his physical capabilities.

Focus/Foilble
18
8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

dotting

1d10 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
1d10 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
1d10 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
1d10 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

So 18,17,17,15,12,8

@GM
would Changelings be fine as a racial option?

Dank zero...you rock

TheGodd*mnGM wrote:
Dank zero...you rock

I can't tell if that was directed at my rolls or my question?

Rolls made before question. Changling is fine but comes with some social issues

Do you plan on using the background skills system?

Sure we can.
