Still a little incomplete in some places. But I think I have enough for you. Got the campaign setting book and zobeck gazetteer, helped alot coming up with my concept.

Also wanted to know, can we buy property in zobeck or will the 6th level stuff not take place enough there? Hope that's not poking to deep into your plans. x)

Definitely there will be time to shop in Zobeck, the 6th level adventure will begin there for a while before heading off to a mysterious place.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant property as in a house, shop, or apartment. The gazetteer list prices of places to own or rent in different districts of zobeck.

Okay! Done.

_x_ fix Ability Score points
_x_ Leather armor instead of Hide
_x_ fix Defense (Armor Penalty)
_x_ fix Skills (Background)
_x_ 2 Favored Class Skill Ranks
_x_ add Offense section

Oh I see! That is awesome but without giving away too much I will just say that the adventure moves away from Zobeck for too long of a chunk of the storyline for that to be something worth getting into very deeply.

I'd be happy to help with fighting styles, though I'm no expert, just a good dabbler.

As for applications, I notice that Omnichaos and I are both empiricist. If it comes to that, I can work the same character into a different build.

I think I'll bow out from this one Grimmy. I'm finding all the dex to damage options frustratingly restrictive, it greatly annoys me.

Good luck.

Hey DW, where did you find the status adjustment for investigator? I was thinking with the parent classes it has it should be a minus.

My bad. I remembered wizards and assumed investigators were somewhere similar. Should be -2 then, no?

Afraid so!

Dreaming Warforged, I hope i get to play with you! I liked you character in GM Euan's Mummy Mask Recruitment.

Dotting for potential interest. I have long been interested in the Midgard setting, and this adventure sounds intriguing. I am considering potentially submitting a version of this character, an elven shadow witch. (ignore the specifics of her mechanics, she was built a long time ago for another Midgard campaign that never really got off the ground and she will need updating).

Since you brought it up, I do best at a posting rate of one or two per day. Much more than this over a protracted time period and I'm likely to fall behind - cuz work and stuff. If that's trouble, let me know. :P

I read the story. Riveting. Fits the tone and theme of the adventure like a glove. One or two posts a day is fine if you can commit to that, and make them count. If there were to be some surges in activity at times would you be able to catch up and follow along? When posting frenzies happen I don't mind if someone isn't posting as much but I do mind if they post without reading. I've had things like posters asking how high the ceiling is when the scene is outdoors :)

Forgot to say: For the level 6 version of my character, I wasn't going to get too into specifics yet, because he might change based on what happens in the prologue adventure or on what happens in the time between the two. But rest assured that Rowan Strayts will always be a healing focused Alchemist, I rarely multiclass. If you really need me to, I'll make a level 6 sheet on myth-weavers as well.

Still, at the same time my complete lack of experience with it is what makes me insecure about embarking in such a Campaign: I don't know if I'll be able to build a character with enough ties to Zobeck and Midgard as a whole to truly stand out and come to a life of her own, and even if I do, expect a steady stream of questions about the setting's peculiarities and quirks as I try to make her fit as seamlessly as possible in the overall narrative :)

I am learning the setting myself. This module doesn't range far across the scope of the setting. It is mostly Zobeck, the Margrave, and the fey. The other regions I listed are there for those who want to be from someplace exotic, but a character who only knows a small section of the Crossroads region will work well. I am very happy to have a dialogue about the setting. As the questions come in by PM, my attention is turned to different corners of Midgard in an organic way which I am really enjoying.

Perfect. I'll follow in your steps, then, and get acquainted with Zobeck first, and then expand from there. So far, I'm seeing things which remind me a bit of Exalted (the Imperatrix court, the flat world), which is good. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't trying to build a character who would have no place in this world. On that note...

I understand elves are held in a somewhat high regard in Zobeck – or is it a Fey thing? I would probably make her a half-elf, the aftermath of an illicit tryst between some important elf and a courtesan disavowed by her own father: would that make sense (other than being a bit too cliché – but I might work on that)? Also: would there have been a way for her to learn her fighting style (some sort of very swift, DEX-based martial art) in Zobeck I could integrate into her background?

Thank you for bringing up elves, another player has asked about them via PM so I will speak about them below.

Your idea is not cliche and I wouldn't mind if it were. As long as you can get inside that characters head it will be worthwhile. Please let me know which elves are appealing to you most so I can read up further. There has been a character submission which is looking for an association with an elven group in the Margreve forest which has yet to have been fleshed out. These would not be aristocratic elves but depending how your concept evolves there could be a tenuous opportunity for a connection to be explored.
Momo Duline wrote:
Is anyone planning on being an elf? I wouldn't mind having Momo know someone else who lives in The Old Margrave. Alternatively, maybe someone who is a local in the city of Zobeck. PM me if you're interested and maybe we can work a story out!

Even though the concept I was fiddling with was a bit more of an urban one in nature, I'm definitely interested in establishing links. I understand most elves living in this forest just north of Zobeck would be of the River variety, so perhaps Momo could know my character's father, who sired her during his exile?

This one does have a narrative it just isn't linear. There is an inciting event, there are antagonists, but there is not a clear path to proceed on at all times. Things can be done in different orders and in different ways and with different outcomes.

Just what I wanted to hear.

I'll be statting her up shortly, and then flesh out her background a bit more in depth as I learn more about the setting.

EDIT: to determine starting status as defined by 4+CHA, is that supposed to mean one's CHA modifier or his raw CHA score (i.e. would a 14 CHA character start with a Status score of 18 or 6)? (the latter would make more sense IMHO, though as they say, when in doubt, just ask...) Would multiclass character take the best, worst, or average of their individual modifiers?

Limnen_euron wrote:

I was thinking the same. Elves in the Margreve might be River Elves or even Shadow Elves, rather than Windrunner Elves. The exile of River Elves sometimes spans decades, so I can imagine they might band together. Perhaps there is a Fey enclave in Margreve that welcomes them.

If your father is more aristocratic and less Sylvan, perhaps his responsibilities in Zobeck could have still brought him into contact with such an enclave. There is an important trade road through the Margreve, kobold iron mines, lumberjacks felling timber. Maybe the Fey/Elves were interfering with one of those and had to be negotiated with. Maybe his disavowed daughter was brought along for a trip. No prying society eyes in the Margreve.

Or if a merchant, maybe he was buying magical honey. That's a thing.

It is 4 + Cha Mod, not the raw score. I am thinking multi class characters would use the cumulative adjustment.

Thanks. :) Regarding posting I should be able to catch up and follow along. I don't think that should be an issue. I will work on her build over the next few days unless it needs to be sooner. Since this campaign seems to favor social interaction I was debating turning her into a sorceress since the witch class has little to support social encounters as far as skills and the like, but I dunno. I kind of like the witch's flavor with Morrigan. I may just boost her charisma more than one might otherwise do for a witch.

Do you have a cutoff date for when you'd like to have all submissions finalized?

Also, Momo, if you're still looking for an elven sidekick (or would like a second), it might make sense for Momo to have come across Morigan in the forest. She will be more or less 'from' the Margreve.

Alfen is a great character and a very good thematic fit. I enjoyed the backstory and description. I see you don't have many posts. Are you new to pathfinder or just the boards? Do you have any PbP history on other boards? Maybe consider responding to one or more of the talking points that have come up so I can get a sense of compatibility.

The outline you provided for level 6 is sufficient.

The next few days is fine. This was originally supposed to be an open ended recruitment time but I have some strong submissions and I want to strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.

I would like to connect a tavern thread for IC dialogue by next week (the 8th) if possible, and finalize recruitment selections a couple weeks after that. Even then, crunch can be tweaked.

The start date for gameplay should be March 1st or thereabouts.

This is the way I'd like to see you go. I wouldn't mess with that flavor you have written in. I was captivated by the eeriness. Utility spells, knowledge checks and other skills will go a long way too. It's not so much that every one needs a massive diplomacy bonus it's just that everyone needs something they can do outside of combat. Also, I haven't seen any divine characters yet, and I know the witches spells have a bit of healing.

I will have to read up on the time of the Black Sorceress's revolt.

Fearful superstition got the better of the camp’s chief. Nik'olo was released, but he refused to leave. Instead, he stayed and served the rest of his sentence. He had seen something in those woods, something wonderful and dark, something invisible, something hidden between life and death, between light and dark, something that cruelly played with his life, something that unlocked a new power within him…

Totally in suspense. What the heck was in the woods? Stories so far are just unreal you guys. So good.

About the lack of divine, one possible turn to the story I wrote is for Nik'olo to discover faith through his ordeal. Perhaps that raven comes back... I was thinking some kind of inquisitor perhaps.

As to tavern talks, I have to confess I'm not a big fan, but I can manage. The hardest for me is to keep track of conversations. It ends up being way more time consuming than normal PbP.

Well I've never done a tavern talk before. I've heard mixed things. I thought it might help to see peoples posting style and compatibility and chemistry between characters.

I'll get more opinions on it and maybe find a compromise in the middle. It probably doesn't need to run so long.

The inquisitor idea sounds cool, would he have a deity or just a patron? We'll have to see how they rest of the party makeup develops.

A god who is enough of a trouble-maker to intervene in a lawful hanging, perhaps just because, but also perhaps because of what Nik'olo was able to glimpse between life and death?

Thot/Hermes I had in mind, probably the Hermes side, who might be a mask (or vice-versa) for Loki. I need to think on it some more, but this is where I'm at.

However his fellow dragons disagreed, they believe this would disrupt the balance. As a compromise they said he could move forward but only if he gave up his powers as a dragon, and became a Kobold himself. Furthermore he was to remain a Kobold until he died or was able to truly convert a Kobold toward the light. So he gave up his dragon powers to became a Kobold.

Of course! I'm glad you like the character.

I'll start off by saying I've been playing Pathfinder with a group for over a year now, but I am new to the boards. I've read and followed play by post games before, but I'm only just now starting to experience playing in them myself. I'm currently in two on the Paizo forums, though only The Dragon's Demand is Pathfinder and has been going for almost a month now. The other one is based for a different system for which I only have a few posts now.

DMG wrote:
What caught your eye about this campaign? What was it about this particular game ad that made you want to apply? Also, is there anything about it from the description that concerns you?

I was pulled in by how different this is from your average game. The potential for PCs to turn against each other and grow in experience separate from one another and the consequences that could arise from that is particularly fascinating. Even if I'm not picked to be part of it, I'd still like to watch it unfold. The only thing that I could say concerns me is that it is a different setting, but the information you provided in the Campaign notes about this section of Midgard did help alleviate that.

DMG wrote:
What are you thinking of playing? You don’t have to wait to have a finished character before you let us hear about your concept. It’s fun to talk about ideas and it might spark something for someone else.

Well you've already seen my character background and build, but I'd really like to see Alfen have a sort of pauper to prince journey using the social status system. I had actually wondered if there should be a penalty considering his background, so he doesn't start at 8, which seemed like it might be high for him.

DMG wrote:
What is your posting availability like? What pace do you prefer, what can you commit to, and what’s the max you can do if things take off?

I'm available to post pretty frequently throughout the day. I have a lot of downtime where I work. Because of that, I could post up to 3-4 times a day when things are moving quickly.

DMG wrote:
Are you ok with encounters that challenge the player as well as the character? That is to say, do you mind if you need to suggest a course of action in order to use a relevant skill check to get a result?

Yes, I would be comfortable with that. While I've found making up what you're saying for a good diplomacy check in real time is pretty difficult, PbP will allow for more time to craft what's being said or done.

DMG wrote:
Where does your preference lie on the spectrum between railroad and sandbox gaming?

I feel like both styles have a lot to offer, as well as their own detriments. Sandbox gaming can be pretty dull if the world isn't interesting enough to explore, but based on your descriptions of the setting it doesn't sound like that would be a problem.

Just to be clear, this will still be a co-operative campaign. There are rival factions and some party members could end up belonging to one and not another, but the party will still work collectively towards the same goals. I am not a fan of PvP. Likewise, there are some individual XP awards as written but only enough to cause a slight and brief level discrepancy.

Pauper to Prince is the name of the game here, but the journey takes place in a strange place among strange folk. As for the Cha bonus to Status, think of it as people responding to you as if you occupied a higher station in life than you do.

Sure, that makes sense! I didn't mean to imply I was interested in it becoming PvP. Just that being in rival factions would make for interesting character work.

Added the calendar and planets to campaign info tab. Let me know what else you would like to see along these lines.

@Limnen_euron, this explains why I couldn't find your exotic fighting style:

The second is the East, including Khandiria, Sikkim, Beldestan, and Far Cathay. Each area is extensive enough to merit its own catalog of wonders.

Indeed, the more information I gather the more I realize there is to know.

Perhaps I've found a way to sort of circumvent this point while having all pieces fall into place: Zobeck's largest bordello, the Silk Scabbard, is also its most prominent fighting pit, apparently. My character (still looking for a name!) could have been born there from the union between an exiled elf and a resident courtesan, and perhaps been taken under the wing of on old fighter hailing from one of these lands you mentioned – someone who realised a brothel is a dangerous place for a girl to grow, and taught her all he could about self-defense and the martial arts. Soon, she decided she liked his lessons better than the prospect of following in her mother's footsteps, and left the establishment altogether while still entering the occasional fight to keep herself sharp. I'm incorporating those details into her background right now.

@Momo Duline: got your PM and thinking about some possible links as I'm fleshing out a background (sorry if I'm answering you here but since it ties closely to what I've just written, I find it conceptually easier to wrap everything up in a single post). I'm visualizing her as a urban half-elf, so very few ties with Old Margreve, but from what I've read elves and half-elves might be uncommon enough for her to stand out as an oddity in a predominantly human city like Zobeck. Momo could have been naturally drawn to her among a sea of stranger faces, and being so young, she could have been taken under her wing or something similar? Their skillsets are also pretty similar and tending towards the stealthy/acrobatic, so some sort of "partners in crime"?

So I have been away from a real computer for the entirety of this recruitment but I have been following along and doing what I can with limited WiFi to work up a character. I have been kicking around the idea of a Kitsune. I saw that it was one of the playable races but there was no info on the campaign tab for them and was wondering if you could give a little on their place in midguard as I know next to nothing about the setting. That being said thanks for all the information that you've provided thus far. Also for the class i was thinking of taking 4 in rogue (charlaton) and 2 in bard (negotiator) thinking of creating a Kitsune who spends all his time in human form using bluff and disguises to get close to people in power and using them or disposing of them. I don't know this sounded like a campaign where he could shine.

Interested, will try and put something together tonight.

This is awesome stuff and ties in so well with the introductory short module I planned I almost can't believe it. Without giving away too much I can only say if possible it would work better if your PC has not been back to the Silk Scabbard in some years.

The Campaign Setting does not actually have info for Kitsune in Midgard but that doesn't mean you can't play one. They would just be rare.

I will adjust the character soon.

From Lord Christian D'Elagante 's Background wrote:

He lived a life of excess, and was quite content to be a plaything for the royalty" .... Interesting! So does he prefer men over women? Both equally? Does Christian sleep around in the court just to raise his own social status or does he get equal carnal pleasure out of it?

Christian's father Lord Etienne Courtenay was a lover of the king. He preferred his men. Christian is quite the opposite where as he prefers his women. When it comes to pleasures, think of him as a straight man that moves in all types of circles. Be them gay, lesbian, bi or whatever, he enjoys life to the fullest and does not feel that he is ready to settle down with just one women. He is very charismatic and has used that to advance the mercenary unit and social status. He is equal parts military and political/socialite. He does not sleep around court as this tends to mess things up with social status. He prefers that his status is earned by his actions and not his carnal actions. When it comes to lovers he is very open about what will and will not happen. He does not play games when it comes to a women's heart. They tend to get down right mean when you do stupid stuff like that...lol

I've noticed that the shadow fey courts are fairly gender fluid. Cis-priviledge is not a huge thing with them. They are elitist jerks on one hand but they are quite progressive on gender politics from what I have seen.

I know there's a lot of brainstorming going on over PM about builds and character connections and setting lore. I just realized the old interest check thread has a nice space for discussion so if anyone wants to chat there here's the link.

Arcela's the Bard’s Note:

The lands in and around the Old Margreve Forest are alive with tales both light and dark. One scarcely begins a conversation with a Margrevian when they will say, “This reminds me of a story that my grandmother once told...” And then you are on a journey through a landscape peopled by mighty warriors, tragic lovers, unspeakable horrors, and a seemingly endless array of fools who offended the forest and met terrible ends.

How the Woodcutter Gave the Moonlit King His First Taste of Good Forest Beer:

One day when Mikhail the Woodcutter was coming home after a hard day’s work in the forest, he heard the sound of merry-making deep in the woods and smelled the fine smell of meat on the spit. As I said, it was the end of the day, and Mikhail had a powerful hunger and thirst on him. His stomach growled like a dragon, and his mouth watered as he thought of the good food that lay beyond the trees. “I will go see who it is,” he said to himself, “and maybe they will share their meat and drink in exchange for a good tale or service.” And so he went.

Soon he came to a clearing, and what did he find but the Moonlit King and his court resting after a day’s hunting in the Old Margreve. The king and his courtiers lay on silken pillows beneath a canopy of midnight blue and drank fine wine from silver goblets, while deer and boar roasted over magical fires on spits turned by the king’s slaves.

As Mikhail stood wondering what he ought to do (for he knew tales of poor mortals who crossed the Moonlit King’s path and regretted it), the king’s courtiers saw him. “This human has stumbled on us unawares,” they said to each other. “Let us call him over, and we will have some sport with him.” And so they did. Mikhail went when they called, but he said to himself, “I will keep my wits about me.”

When Mikhail stood before the king and his courtiers, the courtiers laughed at his simple clothes and the dirt on his hands and the mud on his boots. They said to him, “Come, man, and rest your weary body on one of our fine pillows.”

But Mikhail said, “Ah, generous lords! I cannot rest upon your fine pillows, for as you see, I am covered in filth and would spoil them.”

The courtiers laughed and said, “You are wise to refuse, for if you had rested on one of our pillows you would have fallen into a deep sleep and never awoken.” (The Moonlit King said nothing because he was a king and Mikhail was only a woodcutter.)

Then the courtiers offered Mikhail a plate saying, “Come, man, and sate your hunger with our fine food.”

But Mikhail said, “Ah, most excellent of lords! I cannot accept your kind offer, for you see, as a poor woodcutter, I live on naught but stale bread and ill- cooked mutton, and your food would be much too fine for me.”

The courtiers laughed and said, “You are wise to refuse, for if you had tasted our food you would have become our slave, and we would have carried you back to Shadow to serve us for 100 years.” (The Moonlit King said nothing, because he was a king and Mikhail was only a woodcutter.)

Then the courtiers offered Mikhail a silver goblet brimming with wine saying, “Come, man, and slake your thirst with our fine wine.” And full of mischief they said, “But perhaps you will tell us that you have no stomach for strong drink.”

This, Mikhail could not abide. He took the goblet offered him, drank it to the dregs, and gave it back to the courtiers. In a voice all innocence he said to them, “Ah, greatest of lords! Thank you for that most refreshing drink. Truth, it is as mild as the milk given by my village’s best goat.”

The courtiers were astonished at this and called for stronger wine. When Mikhail drank it he said, “Ah! This reminds me of water dipped from the clear brook next to my house.”

The courtiers were again astonished and called for the strongest wine they had. When Mikhail drank it he said, “Ah! My lords, this draught reminds me of when, as a boy, I would beg my parents for a taste of strong drink, and they gave me fruit-juice saying, ‘This is strong wine.’”

At this the Moonlit King could not remain silent. “Sir!” he said. “You have drunk three goblets full of our strongest wine and call it milk, water, and fruit- juice. How can this be? ”

Mikhail said to him, “Oh king, I am born of the Old Margreve, where men drink good, strong forest beer. It nourishes us when we are weaned from our mothers’ breasts, and it is the last thing to pass our lips before we close our eyes for the final sleep. For taste and potency, I tell you that it surpasses all other drinks in the world.”

The king said, “Let us taste this good forest beer, and if it is not as you say, we shall drag you into Shadow where our hunting-dogs will bite and tear your flesh for all eternity, yet you shall not die.”

The king bade his servant to fetch some good forest beer. This he did at once, returning in the blink of an eye with seven great kegs. He tapped the first of these, and soon, the king and his courtiers and Mikhail all held great tankards of good forest beer. When the brew passed their lips, the king and his courtiers looked at each other in amazement and said, “We have drunk at the hearths and tables of thousands of worlds, from the abodes of the gods to the devils’ own inn; and we have never tasted ought as fine as the beer of the Old Margreve!”

And so the king and his courtiers and Mikhail made merry throughout the night, singing and joking and dicing and dancing, and when the seven kegs were empty, they cried for seven more. So lively were they that no creature of the forest got a wink of sleep that night. Even Baba Yaga at last put her head out of her hut and shouted for peace.

In the hour before daybreak, the king called for an end to their revels. Before the king and his company returned to Shadow, he said to Mikhail, “With my own hand I give you this axe. It is called Woman’s Scorn, for there is nothing so sharp in all the world. With it, you can cleave anything that stands before you, whether ‘tis wood, flesh or stone, as if you cleft the air.” Then he blew his hunting-horn, and he and his courtiers and their horses, slaves, and servants, were gone.

That is how Mikhail the Woodcutter gave the Moonlit King his first taste of good forest beer. And once a year since that day, when the Moonlit King comes a-hunting in the Old Margreve, he always stops at the inn where they serve the best beer, and drinks his fill of that fine brew.

And that inn is my inn, and devils take the man who calls me a liar!

A post from the alias, as requested.

Alfen, did you remember to give yourself background skills? By my count you have several skill points remaining. How did you get your bluff bonus to +11?

Did you put your favored class points in skills or HP?

Also, it looks like maybe you shorted yourself a bonus feat (or 2 traits, your choice).

Other than that, looks good. If you get accepted maybe you could nice up your sheet a little, see Nik'Olo Gaczi or Momo Duline or the new brawler rogue from the silk scabbard for examples. That kind of formatting helps me find the info I need really fast.

Sorry if I made any mistakes I am not the best at checking builds but double check those for me whenever you have time.

Character is adjusted to 2nd level.
The character will advance one more level in fighter and then the rest will be in cavalier. Cav4/Fig2

Looks like those fish would fetch a good price!

I have a rough background in working on (of Momo's childhood trip.) I sent it to OmniChaos yesterday and after I get his imput, I'll make some changes and send it to you Grimmy.

Hey, that is so great. I really enjoyed receiving your questions about the Margreve and Zobeck. I got deeper into the lore yesterday as a result which was excellent prep for the game.

I am holding back some of the lore for game time and also because I don't want to overload anyone, but I am really into this stuff right now so please if anyone has questions keep them coming. It's fun for me.

I can't wait to read Momo's childhood story, truly excited for that.

Looking forward to the fleshed out version of limnen_euron's character as well.

Dreaming Warforged is gone for the weekend but he is considering changing Nik'olo Gaczi to an inquisitor or an oracle.

The Bluff skill is a mistake, it should be 9. It says 9 on the sheet I've handwritten out, so I'm not sure where 11 came from. I've fixed it, sorry about that.

I should have 18 skill points total including background skills. I'll alter the skills tab to make that more detailed and clear. I put both favored class points in HP.

Yes! I did not select traits, thanks for noticing that. I'll get those on there and I can post or PM when the sheet is fixed and cleaned up.
