Merus observes the byplay for awhile before moving up to some of the gathered Restov nobility. He is particularly looking for his "patron".

"It seems Rudolph has made his decision on where his 'loyalties' lie." Merus says sotto voce to a few of the more trustworthy Rostlanders as he points with his drink towards the Aldori nobleman.
"It will make the coming expedition interesting to say the least."

The assembled nobles nod.

"Where else, but with his cousin in the Dragonscale throne?" - one of them says, hate in his eyes, looking at Rupert Surtova.

Aramil heads towards their host, the Lord Mayor.

He approaches, offering a short now, and says, "Lord Mayor Sellemius, on behalf of the Restov Coursers, I would like to thank you for including us in this expedition to the Stolen Lands. As a native son of the city, I especially feel honored to be a part of the expedition. It is my hope that we will be able to maintain the proud traditions of our city, and ensure the country stands as a beacon of honor and justice - regardless of whether others wish to interfere in our affairs or not." He flicks a glance towards Rupert at the last bit before quickly looking back at the Lord Mayor.

Restov's Lord-Mayor Ioseph Sellenius smiles at Aramil.

"Lord Wellys, all the city is honored in having you as one of its sons, and we count on you not to forget her, and fight to defend her when the time comes."
He turns towards Rupert Surtova.
"From enemies outside and inside her borders."

I had hoped I would have the chance to speak to you more this evening, as I was unable to talk more earlier. Your father must be so honored to have been elevated to such a high status by the Dragonscale throne. Tell me, are you looking forward to our journey south? Exploring the new lands and building a country will be a most exciting adventure."

Garrulous and happy, Porablum sought to ensure that the girl enjoyed herself, as she was a child at a party filled with adults.

Father is very honored, and somewhat surprised, taking into account his relationship with my uncle. I must say I am more excited with the voyage now that I know you can come with me, as one of my ladies. Would you do me that favor? Please?"
She then looks to a side of the room, where the Four Swords are looking at them.

Looking around to all the assembled Titian finally approaches his majesty, bows deeply and after given a sign he is allowed to speak addresses his liege." I hope your majesty will allow me to speak. I would like to ask for a favor. In the coming days we will explore new areas, hills and lakes. I would ask for her majesty's blessing to name one of those, benefitting in nature, after his majesties daughter. Be it a flawless lake, a majestic mountain or a forest of prime beauty. I know it is asking a lot but we all would feel honored if you would give us your royal allowance! Also maybe your majesty has another suggestion for other places to honor people in his royal esteem?" Diplo = 28

Rupert Surtova bows towards Titan, and answers in a clear and commanding voice.

"We thank you for your proposal, and I am sure our daughter will feel very honored when you name a beautiful place in her name."
His face changes, and some of the solemnity that was there a second ago melts away.
"But, if I can be sincere with you, Lord Stagson, I have always thought a bad idea to name places with the name of people that is alive. it creates a, how can I say it, personality cult. Don't take it the wrong way, but I would prefer that if a place will have my daughter's name, is because she did something worth of it, and not just because anyone, even with the best intention, as I am sure is your case, gift it to her."
The formal face returns, as he puts a strong and firm hand on Titian's shoulder.
"But we thank you for you intention. Now, if you excuse us, we need to talk to your team leader."
He bows again, and moves towards Amavin Zephyra.

Talking of which, we still need posts from:

Nate I think is out for now.
I will PM them, and we continue with round 2 tomorrow night. You can still chat with your "current" encounter until then.

We will keep on "round one" for a day more, to allow everybody to finish.

M LG half-orc Init +4; darkvision 60 ft.; Per +14; (Cohort: Alysandra Janus)

"Coalhouse Porter; Alysandra Janus." The herald sounds perhaps a little put-out, though whether that's because someone 'firmly suggested' he leave off the whole "Your Majesty, Your Excellency, My Lords and Ladies" spiel, or because he's introducing ... commoners ... is up for debate.

The half-orc Coalhouse, his skin clearly possessing a strong green tinge to it, walks in with the half-elf Alysandra upon his arm. Porter's clothing is undoubtedly expensive: a fine-woven wool thigh-length coat in a deep chocolate brown, trews of the same fabric but a slightly darker color, a vest of fine linen in a green that compliments the shade of his skin, and a complex brownish-green undertunic with a subtle pattern to it. While he wears a few items of richness, they too are spare but rich; a chain of thick gold links, a pair of heavy, understated rings (one of them an 'IB' signet), and upon his coat a clasp of cut brown tourmaline or zircon with his company's interlaced 'IB' insignia inlaid in gold upon it. The exceptional yet understated clothing suggests wealth with restraint, intellect matched with wisdom - someone who doesn't need to either flash brightly or be a raven among peacocks in order to stand out.

Upon entry, the pair take a moment to pause and scan the room; upon locating His Majesty Rupert Surtova (first of his name), Coalhouse bows and Alysandra curtsies, quite deeply; those watching might notice that while Alysandra's head goes down, Coalhouse's doesn't quite dip all the way down, nor do his eyes shift away from 'situational awareness'. Rising from the courtesy, the two visually seek out the Lord Mayor Ioseph Sellenius, and perform a similar courtesy, if one not quite as deep; he is, after all, the host.

The proprieties observed, they step easily into the scrum, gazes shifting across the patterns of conversation that have already formed. The two converse amongst themselves for a few moments before Coalhouse nods towards one corner; Aly glances over, nods, then gives a casual gesture of her hand towards one side of the room. Coalhouse glances over, then nods; the two part.

Coalhouse, bearing a slight air of a predator in an unfamiliar forest, moves through the crowd of nobility not quite like someone who bears the stink of horse manure, but being the only functional commoner in the place, it's a near thing. It turns out to be Azrael, called the Avenger, that is his initial target. "Sir Azrael? Coalhouse Porter, in charge of the baggage train of King Surtova - sorry, King Rupert Surtova," he introduces (and corrects) himself, giving a simultaneous bow at the neck and an outward movement of his open hand; the dual gesture allows Azrael to either give a bowed courtesy back, or else shake his hand, depending. "I was wondering if I might speak to you for a few minutes, in company with a couple others here?" Should Azrael agree, Coalhouse will gesture for Azrael to accompany him, and bring him over to the corner of the room wherein stands the tall [for a gnome] Axhammer Rocknose.

F LG half-elf bard (negotiator) 5; Init +1; low-light vision; Per +11; (Cohort to Coalhouse Porter) / Team Sheet

Perhaps Coalhouse's choice of subtlety is in order to contrast with his flame-haired half-sister. Although her skin bears the mark of a worker - meaning it lacks the paleness of a lady who has no need to work - the light tan of her skin appears to be even across what skin one can see. Her gown reflects her scintilating eyes in a ripple of emerald, from the portrait neckline that displays her exquisite neck and collarbones down to the bust-to-hips sculpting of the basque bodice, the cap sleeves which show off leanly-muscled arms to the floor-length pleated gown under which flicker a hint of scarlet shoes to match her hair. She sports a similar 'IB' as her half-brother, hers a gold-inlayed-emerald fibula, though her other jewelry is as rich but understated as his - small emeralds in her ears, thin gold hoops around her wrists, an 'IB' signet ring all but matching Coalhouse's, and an impossibly thin elf-wrought necklace in gold bearing a single ruby.

Unlike her half-brother, and though Alysandra does not have quite the scintillating beauty or aura of power that Amavin Zephyra possesses, this is a battlefield familiar to her. With every move perfectly right, a courtesy as she approaches, a 'delighted to make your acquaintance, Lord X' as she eases past, she approaches Ignatius. "Sir Ignatius, a pleasure to see you again, and so soon. If you would be willing, might my brother have a word with yourself and a select pair of others?" Should he indeed be willing, she draws him over to the corner of the room wherein stands the tall [for a gnome] Axhammer Rocknose, timing their approach so as to match that of Coalhouse and, should he be accompanied, Azrael.

Then curtseying to the four gentlemen (or rather, three gentlemen and a brother), she eases back into the social combat, soon approaching Merus Lebeda and Stefan Tomanescu; she arrives in time to hear Christian's blunt query. "Why, Lord Christian, what a most crass way of asking. I am certain Masters Lebeda and Tomanescu have nothing but the most honorable intentions in regards to the people of Restov, Restov herself, and the Stolen Lands. Master Lebeda," she says, turning towards him and dipping an elegant curtsey, "allow me to introduce myself. Alysandra Janus, of the International Businessmen, contracted to move the baggage train of His Royal Majesty, King Rupert Surtova. Might I trouble you for a moment or two of your time, should you find yourself at loose ends?"

Aly's Moves:
Alysandra will essentially always be using her Sociable ability to improve the Diplomacy of both herself and Coalhouse (when he's in range) by +2; that puts her at +20 to a roll, so even Taking 10 (which she can always do via Master of Rhetoric) puts her at a DC of 30. And should an interaction/roll be critical, she'll use Master of Rhetoric to Take 20 w/o taking extra time, to pop that up to a DC 40.

Alysandra, more alert in this sort of situation, notices Aramil's courtesy; she nudges her half-brother, and the two give distant bows (at the shoulder) to Aramil before they split and Coalhouse goes after the elf's paladin compatriot.

Strolling towards the corner that currently contains the tall [for a gnome] Axhammer Rocknose with that very same paladin compatriot, Coalhouse glances towards where the Aldori is interacting with the Surtova. "Oh, don't worry about him," the half-orc commoner says easily. "I think it's pretty clear what he's trying to do, but he's forgetting ... critical points, let's say." That is, alas, about all he has time for, as the two have arrived at the tall [for a gnome] Axhammer Rocknose.

Once again, Coalhouse gives that bow from the neck and the open-handed gesture. "Sir Axhammer Rocknose? Coalhouse Porter, in charge of the baggage train of King Rupert Surtova for the upcoming trip. Permit me to introduce to you Sir Azrael, called the Avenger, paladin of Ragathiel. Would we - and, should my sister succeed, Sir Ignatius, paladin of Iomedae - be able to have a few words? Since Ignatius hasn't posted since Thursday, I'm going to assume that by this point he'll have either joined us or declined to accompany Alysandra, so we can go ahead with conversation.

"Sir," replies Coalhouse with amusement plain on his face, "no loftier goal exists than that of the master of transport. Sir Ignatius," he once again gives that bow from his neck as well as that open-handed gesture which allows the other half-orc to respond in whichever way he chooses. "Pleased you could join us." Coalhouse shifts so that Ignatius closes the square, facing Axhammer, with himself facing Azrael; this allows the commoner to keep an eye on who might be near at any particular moment.

"I wanted to speak to the three of you because, as I observed to Sir Azrael, you three are the ones whom would prove to be the worst opponents to my plans - or my greatest allies. I would actually prefer that you allow your god - or gods," he acknowledges Axhammer, "to prompt you should I be desirous of anything less than an orderly society set up to benefit the absolute most number of people.

"Sir Azrael, you have unwittingly already brought up the point I wish to make. The carrier, carter, coachman, freighter, hauler, mule skinner, porter, teamster, wagoner, however you care to call him, if what you want is somewhere else, then with him you must deal - or do without. Wars are lost and won on who could get their men warm, fed, and well-supplied - with everything from arrows to boots to polish - to the right places in time to have an effect.

"Stamping out banditry and establishing towns is all well and good; stating you are the ruler of such is equally well and good. Neither of these are in any way effective - real - if the wagons aren't there to move things, to pick up grain from here," he gestures with one hand, "and move it there, then the flour over there, then the bread over yonder," and other gestures are made. "Should those in charge of the wagons decide that such things are not to happen, then everyone starves until the wagonmaster gets what he wishes. My lofty goal is to simply move people and goods from place to place, to be the primary, and by preference only association able or allowed to do such - even including those best described as 'smugglers' - or, should it be necessary for the greater good, to not do so."

With a slight nod, he indicates the new Surtova king and those sucking up to him - the Aldori swordsman and his henchmen, the various nobility who will be moving into the new land to claim territory. "Lord Noleski Surtova has certainly gained his position through deceit and chicanery, pressure applied in exactly the manner I'm speaking, but with selfish ends. That has enabled him to turn Rostov's attempt to gain an ally in their quest for freedom into a dagger at their back, should His Majesty become nothing more than a puppet of his cousin. My ambition - which I believe I share with you three, even you, Sir Axhammer - is to ensure that such underhanded actions do not prosper. King Rupert must be able to make decisions, good decisions, for his people - and not for the man who sits on the Dragonscale Throne. Whether that makes for self-determination for the Rostlanders, only time will tell - but better an honest, up-front fight than skulduggery and assassination.

"Make no mistake, my Lord Paladins, someone will be in possession of the lever towards which I reach. The question is whether it will be myself and my people, whom I hope you will trust, or some other Issian whose loyalties are to Lord Noleski and not King Rupert's subjects."

He hesitates, then lifts an apologetic hand. "There is ... one other thing that had occurred to me. Your groups are each significant powers in and of themselves. Though that is well and good, it is my thought that perhaps we might mate our individual groups' strengths to each other, so that we might work together more closely, whether in the field combating simple banditry, in a ruin exterminating a dangerous threat to the people, or in the cities making sure that those at the heights of power do not forget the people who keep them there. An association, wherein we trust each other -" he pauses here to glance down at Axhammer, specifically adding, "even those whose ethical outlook we may disagree with in both personal and professional form - in order to serve the good of the people.

"Gentlemen, nothing I've said is for you to agree with just for the asking; I personally want you to go back to camp tonight and pray about it. Because if the good gods agree with me, then with your help I cannot but succeed; if they do not agree, then it was a foul project to contemplate, and I am better off seeking another path."

If working with you will stop smuggling then working with you is the best way. I will work with any being that is not wholly corrupted by evil and choas, who is willing to make this happen. There will be assasins in on the take, though I detest the use of them. Of course there will be spies and those who use rumor and fear to get what they want. What you propose is to work together and elimate that element which would undermine all that we would work for.

Looking towards Azael in paticular he thinks for a moment and then speaks to him, "Your god, he is the god of Just Vengeance, as you are noted and have badits putting prices on your head yes? That in and of itself gives me reason to work with you, for no man that goes and avenges the woes of the common man can be evil in my eyes, though the means of such vengeance may.

Gazing upwards at the paladin known as Sir Ignatius, he spoke with conviction, "Your god is Iomeade, I see it in your dress and stance, I worship her in my own way and would love to work with you should you choose to accept my help. I feel that Loyalty and Honor are things that all should have. The persuit of Honor and Glory is indeed a high calling that not everyone can achieve, I salute your bravery in the doing of such. Perhaps later on when time is not pressing and understandings are not being made we can talk more about how She is working in this land?

Axhammer Rocknose was used to looking up at people, for there were many that were taller than he, but in these men he thought he could look eye to eye with them about the needs of protecting the city, nay the very country that was forming.

His smile is genuine and sincere.

Alysandra's smile is polite, but it's clear she knows the utter, monstrous magnitude of the insult Christian has just offered her. Were she a noble, there would be blood on the floor already but, as a commoner, she will have to settle for metaphoric blood, and so her own attitude and vocal leanings are that of the protocol mistress, striving to instruct a boorish young student lacking in tact and grace. "Lord Christian, you were crass; you even stated you had no intention of trying to be diplomatic. I merely sought to diffuse the tension caused by you poinarding Master Lebeda with such an uncouth, gruesome question. As for the rest, well, I am certain that such words will be most welcomed by someone of your own social experience; might I recommend my brother, Coalhouse?"

Lord Christian D'Elagante wrote:

"It is always encouraging to hear someone show understanding of the facts of the matter, even if they have the need to talk it out to be able to do so," she agrees with Christian in a tone that lacks only the hand movement to be patting a particularly slow student on the head as a reward.

Lord Christian D'Elagante wrote:

Perhaps the three of us can continue this over those delicious crab beignets. Christian points to an area on the other side of the room.

"Don't be silly, you supercilious man, I wouldn't dare think of depriving you of either your opportunity to pummel Master Lebeda about the head and shoulders so gauchely or the only grace you've possessed tonight by taking your lady from your side. Lady Domas; Master Lebeda; Master Tomanescu." She gives each a courteous bow of her head as she names them, then gives Christian a sympathetic smile, pats him on the shoulder, and glides off into the crowd.

Amavin is talking to Rupert Surtova because she realised he wanted to speak with her about something. Ishana on the other hand, is probably still delaying Rudolf, or, should that be no longer required, will probably go say hi to Ralph of the Four Swords.

He is not ready for such trials as that would place on his soul, I have lived long enough that I understand that sometimes what is needful is not...wholesome. That being said, I can deal with a great deal if it means saving this kingdom from being a mere vassal nation of a corrupt one."

Coalhouse looks slightly rueful at Axhammer's words. "You know, protecting him from danger is simply going to increase the chance that, when he encounters it, he's going to shatter like a porcelain vase. My mother had a saying - the burned hand teaches best. My father had another - only fire can purify gold."

He waves this off, however, and states, "If you think I'm going to start playing around knee-deep in horse muck, you've got the wrong idea. I have no intention of being anything but above-board, and while I hope to co-opt any smuggling that happens in service to the greater aims - basically, to make sure that when a major decision is made, that they toe that line as well - I'm not so innocent to believe that I'd be able to stop them. Nor, to be honest, would I want to; not even the best laws are capable on their own of delivering both justice and mercy. But yes, your basic understanding is on target - to forge a country, not a vassal. And to keep that country, in its rulers and overall its people, upright in both moral and ethical values."

Good Evening miss Janus. If you lead, it would be my honor bowing to let her pass he waits for the half-elf to lead the way, following her to the reunion taking place at the room border. As they arrive Ignatius recognizing both paladins for their respective accomplishments and glad to see such prominent figures, he respectfully salutes each with a small reverence Brother Azrael, Brother Axhammer, It´s good to find you both well. I had heard you were part of the expedition but found myself unable to pay my respects before.

Afterwards he takes Porter´s hand shaking it with a strong grip It is my honor good sir. I see you have reunited the main paladins in the group sent to the River Lands. I assume there is something you wish to discuss with us

While hearing Axhammer comment and Azrael response, Ignatius only nods silently, while wondering how the life of a young girl amiss the power struggles must be.

Ignatius carefully hears to Porter explanation, thinking about the implication of what he said before deciding to speak. you make a good point sir, and I believe you are truly interested in more that personal gain. Rostand needs a king capable of protecting his people, free form the influence of other interests, especially those acting "under the table". However, the decision to give your company the only trade permit while not ours seems unfair to me. Not everyone is a smuggler, many small merchants transport their own goods.

Turning to his fellow paladins he continues Our groups in one way or another have the same objective, to bring order and safety to the River Lands. I have been there before, if we wish to prosper we will need to work together as a single group. That is why I agree with Mr. Porter, the sooner we break the barriers between us and our respective groups the better we will fare.

"Association, Sir Ignatius," Coalhouse corrects, "which means not just the International Businessmen. I know that there are merchants who move their own goods; that's fine. But consider how abbreviated - how non-existent - a rebellion might be if one side simply cannot acquire or move the goods necessary to make war. If that rebel is a baron or earl seeking to expand his power at the expense of not only his neighboring nobles, but also his and their peasants, wouldn't it be better to know about it before it happens, to be able to stop it before it hurts scores, hundreds, even more?"

"How about if that rebel is a baron or earl seeking honest redress for harm done to his family and his people? Wouldn't it be righteous to support him, to hobble the ability of those who have already harmed him to keep doing so? I envision an ... organization, composed of more than just the IB, more than just any - or even all - of our individual groups. People who can make a difference, united in the common cause of ensuring that the general good and due process of law is respected. Of course membership would be voluntary, but to be honest, I'm pretty sure that any teamster with half an eye on his bottom line would jump at the chance to not get screwed over by nobles who think that just because yoru wagon passes through their land they can take half of what's inside."

Coalhouse shrugs. If he had pockets in his pants, his hands would be in them; as it is, they reach behind his back to rub at each other. "Like I said, the question isn't whether or not this sort of group is going to exist; it is, and in most places I've been, it's been used by those in control of the underworld - even here in Restov and Rostland. In the new kingdom, I want people like us, if not us, to be the ones with their hand on the tiller. People who are interested in more than just their own wealth and power, and in keeping both any way they can, at the expense of whomever gets in their way."

Merus watches the byplay and wisely decides to stay out of whatever differences there seems to be among the two of them.

Returning the proffered handshake, Merus smiles politely and responds, "Well met good sir, A rather loaded question for such a gathering, though I wouldn't have put it so indelicately as the lady did."
He then leans in and speaks in a low voice.
"Rest assured, I am a loyal Rostlander and no friend of the Surtovas despite the family name I bear."
Once again speaking in a normal voice, "As to my intentions for the Stolen Lands, why adventure and glory, of course! What more fitting way to make a name for oneself. All manner of beasties and bandits inhabit the area."
He then speaks louder in a deliberate attempt to be overheard and looks specifically at the Four Swords.
"I long to test my sword against such threats as lately the competition around here has been rather weak."

Do not mind her, she is in her element here. This is her battlefield and she is very good at political warfare. Yes I could have worded the question more to these surroundings but I decided not to. My tongue tends to not wag that way. Christian give a little chuckle.

Clearly concerned with Porter´s idea, Ignatius places both hands behind his back, trying to show his good will. Such association, operating above the law of Landlords and with economic power behind them would, by definition, lack control. Indeed, this organization would not be the first to be created, nor the first to be corrupted. Be its "justiciars", or the "overseer". And while I believe in my companions, both in the "Hospitalers" and the other teams reunited here, power can subtly change the greater good into self-righteousness. As a paladin I know that better than most. If any teamster can jump at the chance to "settle" thing with a noble, he will seek vengeance, not justice.
