Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Yup you'll love it. Oh and Drazek's one of my past characters. Been through here in 3 different incarnations now.

OK, so after some deliberation and confab, the slot will be going to Philo. Please PM me at your earliest convenience so we can settle the details.

HOWEVER...

Edward, you have been patient, and I wish to offer you first dibs on a new Planescape game I am inspired to begin. It's a chance to start fresh and build a campaign. No tryouts, you have the spot if you want it.

Everyone else who has posted so far:

All the positive feedback has inspired me, and I am going to start another Planescape game. Here is the prospectus:

I would like to focus on Sigil for a bit, so I am asking you all to come up with a 1st-level character, but one that will be young-15-17 years old. You will have some training, but not a lot. I want to do a few Sigil-centric stories, have you build up contacts and allies organically. You can either be a 'lost one', a young person who fell through a portal , or a native Cager if you feel comfortable with that. I want to do the first part of the story in the Cage, but we might branch out after that. One center of action will be St. Cuthbert's Lodging for the Lost , a large youth hostel on the edge of the Great Bazaar. It's run by low-level priests , but they ask no affiliation of their lodgers, merely help with chores. The Other center of action will be the Crossroads Lightning Guild Lodge, a hostel/tavern/courier service also on the edge of the Great Bazaar. This will be a more morally loose area, where young cutters can pick up jink delivering messages and packages for merchants.

Anyone who has already posted previous to this post I will extend you an offer to join. Post here if you are interested. After that I will see what we have to fill and open it to others, so if you see this, keep an eye out if you are interested.

I am interested, I have a couple of ideas. remember this is my first experience with Planescape and sigil So basically I have no idea what anything you said is about other than making a character for the game.

Definitely interested.

What era of the metaplot is Sigil in? In particular, is it pre-Faction War or post-Faction War?

Thinking about a character as a tiefling rogue, a sort of street-rat who survives by stealing and/or very small con games. Probably a member of the Free League, although only loosely so. (Although -- is anybody who's an Indep *not* only loosely a member?) Not evil, just kind of a scoundrel. Charismatic, and sometimes he gets away with stuff because he can be charming. Would probably become completely infatuated with Kylie if he met her.

???? war? who is Kaylie? another player?

Tried to read through some of the info I found but I really need something that does not assume you already know most of the lingo.

what is a cager?

There are a few lists of Sigil Cant terms online, you should start with the shorter, most common ones. :)

Here is a list of the common terms, also used in the Planescape:Torment PC video game.

I Can answer your first question! (Thanks to all of the research I had to do before trying to re-write our adventures!) ;P

'The Cage' is a nickname for Sigil, the city of doors. Used because many of the people who wind up there cannot seem to find their way back home. Despite the fact that supposedly there is a door to ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE somewhere in Sigil. Ergo, 'The Cage'.

So, a 'cager' is anyone who lives in the Cage. :)

Thanks for the info.

I would be very interested in playing! Planescape was my first game setting a long time ago. In my attic I still have pretty much every Planescape product ever made.

Do we have any parameters for character creation? For planning purposes, like race, alignment, classes, factions, etc.

Liberty's Edge

Hey Pat my friend, very interested as per post above if you've got room for me - if there's already a list with a cut off, no worries.

I'll have to get the brain juices flowing and re-acquaint myself with Sigil before posting a character concept. I've always been partial to tieflings and bariaurs for planescape, but not sure as yet. I'm also thinking a character with some sort of arcane casting ability but also not 100% set. I shall think on it.

Hi Tanner. At this point I am setting the game up, and figuring out how many slots are left to fill. I will put you on a list for those if you'd like.

The parameters are , 1st level, young (15-17 yrs or equivalent for race) the game will not be combat heavy to start, I want to try and have the characters explore Sigil and create allies and faction contacts before rolling out as adventurers. This is still in the thumbnail sketch phase, so it could be a bit.

I have a slot for you Mothy. You were the deciding factor in starting this up. I've missed gaming with you. Give it thought, we still have s bit of tweaking to do

Hi Edward. Planescape is a very complex and interesting setting. But, you don't have to know a lot. Part of the reason I am setting it up this way is to enable the characters (and the players) time to explore and learn the city.

Rknop's question involves the Planescape Timeline. There is a big event that occurred at the end of the 2nd Edition era that fundamentally changed Sigil. Going into 3E , 4E , and likely soon 5E the setting has evolved. However I usually play 'classic' 2nd Edition cannon Planescape. This really doesn't have to worry you, the less meta-information you have the better for your enjoyment anyway.

Kylie is a very famous Sigil NPC. >Picture <. She's what's known as a'tout' which is someone who will guide newcomers around Sigil for the right price.

That would be great!

@Edward - Planescape is one of the richest game settings in D&D history. It had almanacs and guides devoted to current events and politics rather than geography and history like most settings. One quirk in particular was planar cant. Rather than being something that only thieves use, everyone uses cant. Baatezu and devas, modrons and slaads, and everyone in between. It is the grand shibboleth for identifying the Clueless -- those from the Prime Material who were unfamiliar with planar travel. Natives of Sigil tend to use a denser form.

=====

Pike it, berk. You want to be put in the book of the dead? You keep rattling that bonebox about kipping Clueless jink and it's only time before a Hardhead comes to call.

Shut up, stupid. Do you want to get killed? You keep bragging about stealing money from Prime Material newcomers and a Harmonium town guard is going to find out.

Excellent! I've missed our games too - the adventures of Dave and the Sarge were great, Thorn and OLLI too (even if Thorn was a bit of an ass...).

Ok, having thought a bit more, an initial concept is coming together. An orphan of Sigil, grew up in and around the Great Bazaar - has probably become an Indep as a result. I'm thinking human female. Has picked up a bit of this and a bit of that over her tender years - so maybe a class that has a range of abilities, such as bard, magus, one of the hybrid classes? Mysterious or clouded past, maybe even the old amnesia cliche. She may be a prime originally but has been in the Cage for a good few years. May have some artefact from her past - maybe something others are looking for. Just as a thought (not locked in) do you have any objection to the black blade magus archetype? Perhaps she's recently started taking some jobs for the Lightning Guild.

I keep bugging Kruelaid to come back and restart Z-Day. He keeps saying he wants to, we'll see. OLLI still works at the Lady's Library with his drunken Ice Devil co-worker Shactal.

The advantage of pre-Faction War Sigil is that there's a huge amount of information about it, much of it quite excellent, from the 2nd edition era when "Planescape" was considered its own setting.

I haven't dug into all of the 3e and 4e material, although I did have the 4e Manual of the Planes back when I played 4e. In that book, and my impression is in everything since the golden era of 2e Planescape, Sigil receives a few pages. I believe that since Planescape, Sigil has received only a few pages, or a chapter, here and there.

There's a whole lot more out there about pre-Faction War Sigil, and that module changes things enough that a lot (though certainly not all) of the pre-existing stuff is invalidated.

Kylie is a character who comes from a book called Unchained: Faces of Sigil, which in my opinion is one of the best setting books that's ever been released for any RPG. It's a series of very interesting NPCs, explored in depth. There are relationships between them as well. Reading the book was inspirational, and made me want to use all of the NPCs in games. (I did use several of them. A'kin was one of my favorites, and showed up as a quest giver that the party never entirely trusted. Kylie was a pal of some characters. Estivan was also a quest giver that the party didn't entirely trust. Several others had cameos.)

I agree rknop. The amount of material in the pre-Faction War is fantastic. I have done a lot of detailed narratives from it when the party is in Sigil.

Estivan is a favorite of mine. You might run into him. I used the Us as an exotic B&E specialist (fortunately the PC in my other game managed to capture a large segment of its 'body' and get it to back off)

Oh and I have used Alluvius Ruskin as well. I can almost guarantee she'll be employing you lot at some point.

Cool!
Have fun guys! :)

Maybe we'll see you around the Grand Bazaar? ;)

In the other Planescape game I am in here on the boards we had a run in with Estivan, not sure we trust him!

I am a big fan of Planescape but don't know the setting that well. I did send a party into the Cage for a single adventure once, great fun to be sure.

Estivan is not inherently trustworthy. His and your interests might coincide, but never fool yourself that he will go against his own interests in the name of friendship or loyalty. He's not evil, just ... Amoral.

Hello Hello Hello
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?

I'm sorry. I was at PaizoCon, and I just got in a car accident the day I got back. I'll have an update by morning

That sucks. I hope that you are okay.

Silver Crusade

Ouch. I'm not in this game but i'll pray for you

'S all good. More hassle than catastrophe

Silver Crusade

Glad to hear

Sovereign Court

didn't know you were in a car crash Pat. Good to hear it wasn't super serious.

Yeah I mentioned it in the Monkey's Treefort, but that's usually where I chat about RL. I had just gotten home from PaizoCon and I was stopped on a road waiting to take a left turn and a young kid slammed into me. I am very anal about having my seatbelt on, so no whiplash for me. My car is still in good shape, just a bit of crumpling. The insurance company was quick and I should have a check soon.
