Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

URG. Yeah this game was started before the Alpha came out and then we kinda segued into it ... Hmm ..lemme figure out what the Pathfinder build that would be appropriate would be ..

I believe we did drop the ECL down one notch. Established players? Help the forgetful monkey out?

Flash:

Spoiler:
Savage Species has Harpy listed as a character race {pg 177}. It doesn't look very overpowered, so if you want, we can hash it out with the more rules-proficient folk and I don't think you would be too penalized.

I'ma big fan of the Flynn-ster myself! ;)

Count me in! I'll apologise in advance if I fall off the earth (I've lost count of the games I'm trying to keep up with!) But it just sounds like too much fun!

So, any suggestions on an unusual race?
What about classes? Sounds like you have cleric, duskblade, a warrior type, a kitty-sorcerer, what else did I miss? Do we have a list? I wouldn;t want to double up, and I do luv teh casters, will stick with wiz unless it's already taken.

Well, our wiz Greep is MIA due to a horrible reaction his player Neil had to some medication that left him supposedly unable to even READ (a very horrible fate in my eyes!) So casters are scant on the ground ATM. As for races, make something up, post it, let me and the others hash it out and we will roll on it!

Pat, the ECL was dropped down one I do not think we used to 32 point buy let me go look

edit...20 point buy in pathfinder be the same as we used pat

I was just looking in Beta and I think the 20-point 'high fantasy' option looks about right for the point buy

EDIT: NINJAED!

It was 32 under 3.5, I suspect that 20 in pathfinder is the equivalent

This is more or less correct . . . although by my calculations a ECL higher then +2 in 3.5 can be quite powerful, especially if the ECL adjustment comes from spell like abilities, but simply subtracting 1 to figure the new ECL is usually pretty close to correct. As long as the race you're choosing doesn't have powerful spells and abilities simply subtracting one works pretty well.

Pat:

Spoiler:
Damn, Savage Species is one book I don't have, so I guess that nicks that idea in the bud (unless you wanna e-mail me the relevant details). I have never played a Bard before and since I am colouring Hugo's Harpy at the moment it just struck me as an interesting choice for Planescape (which I have not looked at in a looooong time so bare with me on that front).
Maybe I should just go with the Fey'ri as I have played one of them before. Probably wouldn't go a Bard though. I'd have to think about a Class. Last Fey'ri I played was a Duskblade, but that's already taken. Warlock would have been my second choice but that's taken as well. Maybe a Sorcerer (or Multi-Variant therof) as I seem to have a "thing" for Sorcerers at the moment, especially Dragon Disciples. Mull it over (as will I) and let me know what you think.
Cheers

Hah! I read the first few pages of the World Serpent inn a few months ago!
I still remember the antics of Karrin Kind's table manners!

So, I'm going to (re-)peruse the PFRPG beta rules tonite (haven't read them since the Alpha!) And see what I can figure out.

BAsically- right now I'm looking at a wiz (or a Rogue1/Wiz3) played as either (1) A Planescape version of Dr who, even found some faction feats related to reincarnation that would fit right in! OR (2) a tough, smart-aleck wiz for hire a-la Harry Dresden. Either way, basically thinking Human right now. Or elf. Will be funny to be the only 'normal' one in the group! :)

Hey Pat, (and everyone else too!)

I have here an item for your consideration.
It was created by 'Fake Healer' for use in his home games, and has been adopted by Heathy in his (Formerly Saltmarsh,) Isle of Dread thread.

It is a 'Combat Wand'. A magic item that allows arcane casters to use fire a bolt of energy as a standard action each round, IF they succeed on a caster level check to activate it. Much much more fun than a crossbow, and better flavor. With the caster check to activate, I have been watching it's use, and I do not think it is overpowered or unbalanced. I also figured that if I could find one anywhere, it would be in Planescape! Please take a look at the following description, and give me feedback on what you think of it? Thank you.

Copied from Heathy's Saltmarsh Campaign Discussion Thread,...

Combat Wands

I think this concept works better for a spellcaster than having a wizard using a crossbow. It fits them more, flavor-wise, in my opinion. Attacks with Combat wands are ranged touch attacks.
These wands are made by saturating the wand in rare resins and alchemical substances that are infused with the energy type of the wand to be made.
Although they channel arcane energy, most wands are not magical themselves. For purposes of further enchanting them, they are considered masterwork weapons which are limited to only being able to receive enhancement bonuses (+1 through +5) and not the special abilities of weapons.
Special- For every 3 points the wielder’s concentration check exceeds the wand’s DC, the wielder may add 1 point of their ability bonus (of their primary casting ability, determined by highest caster level) to damage. So a wizard who exceeds the DC by 9 may add up to +3 points of his/her intelligence modifier to damage.
Special- Combat wands are considered one handed weapons for the purposes of two weapon fighting. They require great mental training and focus to use.
Special- Any effect that applies a penalty of bonus to the wielder’s attack, is also applied to the concentration check. Examples: Two weapon fighting penalties, being prone, recipient of a Bless spell.
Special- An attack with a Combat wand is treated as a ranged attack for determining things like attacks of opportunity.

Combat Wands:

Wand Type/Base Cost/Base Damage/Concentration DC/Range

1/ 750gp/ 1d4 / 10 / 40ft
2/ 1000gp/1d6/ 15/ 40ft
3 /1500gp/1d8/ 20/ 60ft
4/ 3000gp/1d10/ 25/ 60ft
5/ 5000gp/ 1d12/ 30/80ft

Energy Type/MultiplierCost*
Fire/ 0gp
Cold/ 50gp
Electricity/ 50gp
Acid/ 75gp
Sonic/100gp
Force/ 500gp

(* multiply the energy cost by the wand’s type, and add this cost to the wand’s base
cost to determine the overall price. So a Type 5 Combat wand of Force will cost 7500gp.
5000gp (Wand type 5) + 2500 (Price of the Force energy type times the Wand type: 500X5)

Obviously I couldn't even touch one for a couple levels but I would like to get rid of the crossbow eventually and just use this wand (most likely fire since I plan on being a firey evoker mage). Even the highest priced one (7500gp) only does 1d12+up to intel bonus if the concentration DC of 30 is passed.

Hey all. Sorry for the silence, I was moving some firewood last night, and I think I tweaked my back pretty bad. It is agony sitting for any long periods, so I might be a little absent. I think this makes sense given the description and it gives a low level character access to them as well.

So for Beta you'd be swapping out Concentration with Spellcraft for the check.

Hmm. A wizard's handgun with unlimited ammo, (gives a nice image of a mage "John Wooing" it up with 2 of these). Nice.

Don't forget that in Beta if you go evoker you'll have a ray that does 1d6+1/ 2levels as a standard action so you really never need a crossbow anyway.

Hm,... Possible. OK, I see your point.

While I would hate to go to a '1d3' dmg (IT just seems rather pointless) I can see the point that it is the "BASE" base wand, still capable of being enchanted, etc. It might not even be that pointless at low levels, where every D3 of dmg is still worth something!

I'm also re-considering the 'can only be enchanted with a to hit/dmg bonus' line. Seems to me if you can enchant it as a weapon (It IS a projectile weapon!) that you could add any of the weapon enchantments that can be added to bows or crossbows. Which would make even a lvl 1 combat wand more useful for an extra lvl or so. (As opposed to when a 1d4 dmg weapon becomes futile I mean)

I'm guessing that when Fakey imagined this and statted it up, he was comparing the usefulness of when you can buy your first wand, ( a fully charged wand of Magic Missiles at first lvl caster is 750GP) and tried to make the Combat wand no better/worse than that most basic of items!

This brings up a question I have about Wizards in the Beta of PFRPG,...

In the alpha, you got a bonus if you bonded to an item, (say a wand) in the power it gave you. In the Beta I read that if you lose your bonded item, you cannot cast a spell unless you succeed in a concentration check of 20+spell lvl! That seems a little extreme to me. If a 1st lvl mage gets knocked down/out/robbed (Not that difficult, even with the PF HP bonuses!) He will never make the check to get a spell cast! I understand and even like the concept, but they should lower the DC a bit. If you lose your item, it should be difficult to cast a spell, not impossible,...
Just wanted to express my opinion,... I'm done now,... ;P

Ah, good points, thank you!

Yes, if I go evoker this is definitely a moot item. If I go universal, it becomes very useful again.

Heh. I just finished typing everything into my profile. Good timing :)

Heh, working on it now.

Question, is it 4th level total?
(I'm presuming were using the normal 4 level = 3 fighter +1 Tiefling/catperson/etc.)

Been reading the last couple of pages. (NO time to read ALL of them yet, sorry) But I like the way you think! ;D

SO, does anybody care if they get a bright & chipper know-it-all Wizard, or a surly, sarcastic 'hard-boiled' evocationist?

Vote now, or forever enjoy being stuck with what you get! ;)

(either one is fun for me, I promise!)

For a Tiefling 4th Level is 4th Level. Under PFRPG Rules it is assumed that the +ECLs will all be toned down by 1 (eg. Aasimar, Tieflings, etc.. will be +0 ECL; Drow will be +1 ECL, etc...) given that the PFRPG Races are slightly more powerful than 3.5 and this brings them more into line with +1 ECL Races.

As for your Character, I'm not worried.

I will be playing a Haughty Noble Harpy Bard so beat that. ;)

It is indeed the total level, but as flash has pointed out: the level adjustment has sort of been dropped by 1.

I'll just quickly point out that ECL (Effective Character Level) and level adjustment aren't the same thing. ECL is basically what you're asking about Ragadolf, it is the total of character levels, level adjustment, and racial hit dice all factored together. The ECL for this game is 4th.

This is important to keep in mind because some creatures (like bugbears for example) also have racial hit dice that also get factored into the ECL on top of level adjustment. A bugbear without any levels becomes a ECL of 4th in 3.5 because the bugbear has a level adjustment of +1 and 3 racial hit dice. In pathfinder they'd loose the level adjustment of +1 but would still be 3rd level characters.

From some of the talk I've heard: the entire level adjustment thing might be dropped entirely in PFRPG. If that were the case I'd suspect that ECL will simply be figured through adding up hit dice (racial and character). Monsters that have powerful spell like abilities will have enough hit dice to make their abilities appropriate. This I'm sure will mean the fey will need to be drastically reworked . . .

However this is just an idea that James had said Jason was bouncing about a couple of months ago, so it might not even come into fruition.

Hmmm, I hope I didn't just confuse you more :(

Make whatever you want to have fun man! Just try not to make someone that's too mean because Karrin has the emotional capacity of a teen and when you have a 17 STR you can throw one mother of a temper tantrum.

Well, I was curious if there is still room in this campaign for another player. If you do have room I was thinking of playing a caster of some sort, as I have a few concepts kicking around my head.

An example is a bard seeking the form or definition of absolute beauty and to attempt to find out as to whether it is objective or subjective.

Another example is a wizard who is a part of the Dustmen who is seeking a means to facilitate the transference of everyone to the True Death.

Just let me know if you need another and I'll roll one up.

Patrick
