Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Do you have access to the Book of Vile Darkness?

Sovereign Court

I really hate those books.
IMO they add nothing to the game and I've banned them from my table.

Oookaayyy, so I have your opinion.

Dark speech is also in Hordes of the Abyss, I believe (which is a very fine supplement in its own right and I use it heavily as a DM).

Ah well that's a bit different then.

Every time I hear the BoVD or BoED mentioned I tense up. They weren't particularly good source books IMO because they could seriously unbalance the game unless the books heavily used by the DM and players alike. They're not good books for just dipping into IMO.

Hey all, still feeling super keerappy. Trying to stay current, just posting to say I am still in the mix. Questions for the newcomers:

1. Do you want to be in a faction? No one is in the game ATM, but it is an option.

2. What type of stories are you interested in playing? We can do all sorts in Sigil, and I can do side stuff as well (the party has split up on several occasions). Like political, save the world/rescue the damsel, get loot/power, travel to interesting places/meet cool beings/slaughter them? I like to have input, I roll a fairly open storyline.

I will research Dark Speech tonight, as I have both books indicated. If it is some sort of super evil tongue used to curse/power up evil spells, that should be OK, just remember that these things do have consequences when used, and you have to be ready to pay the piper ...'specially if he's Azathoth. Anyway, I'll read up on it and get back to you Vulcan.

I'm a big fan of save the world/princess, travel to cool places meet intersteing people and kill them/take their stuff, retrieve the mythical whoosywhatsit from the pit of doom type of story.

I'm also a big fan of roleplay and character interaction so it all works for me I guess.

And yeah, you're pretty much in the ballpark on darkspeech. And temporary Charisma damageis a pretty hefty price.

Since I'm not all that familiar with the Planescape setting and have no idea what any of the factions are, I was kind of planning to cover that with having the character be new to Sigil and therefore also totally ignorant. I read the thread and got a decent feel for how things work, but I'm still going 'huh?' more often than not.
As far as types of quest, I can pretty much go with anything. It's all fun. Naridre is most likely to act against her fear if there's someone actually in danger, but since that might all too often be the other pcs...:)

Ah no worries I had barely heard of Sigil before joining this PbP and you generally get used to all the odd phrases after a while.

Yeah this story is very narrativistic, but that's why I like Planescape, it's fun to write, and there's a lot of intersting stuff you can do. You can also easily go ANYWHERE. Kevin's and Kayos' characters just spent the morning on the Negative Energy Plane for instance ..

Cool,
Between the two characters I am trying to build, (Why bother with just one when you can do two in almost the same time?) One is an experienced Planar traveler (Universilist Wiz)‚ who loves to get involved and help out people wherever he ends up, (Was actually thinking more of the 80's TV show with the time traveller with the pocketwatch than Dr Who, but both were my inspiration) and the other is an evocation specialist specializing in ray spells who plays the Han Solo tough guy act, but you know he's gonna help out the underdog. Especially if it's a damsel in distress!

IN short (TOO LATE!) it's all good! I like a variety, and it looks like you got that covered!

The Experienced Planar Traveller was going to be a (renegade?) member of a society that watches over the planes. So he could be a member of a faction, but the group might thinks it's better than the factions.

The blaster-caster was originally from one world and got stranded. Pretty basic. He might have joined up with a group, but thinking his stubbornness may have prevented it. He thinks he likes to play by his own rules.

IT'S ALL GOOD! HE wants to do it all! :) "Save the universe before lunch,... again?!? Oh all right,..." ;P

Hi all,
Just checking in, the gut bugs still kicking my ass, but I am trying to come up with some insertion stories. If everyone can make sure that they get their backgrounds written sos I can riff off them I will be dropping your characters in during the month handwaiving that will be coming through the game soon. Thanks! Any questions, post em.

I kinda ran out of room in the character's profile to type her background. I tried. And after I had to retype the whole thing because that resulted in my whole profile getting eaten, I gave up. Should I put it behind a spoiler here or in the discussion thread?

Hey Pat, Hope your feeling better!

Almost done with both possible Wizzies. (I think I enjoy building them as much as playing them!)

Just wondered about how you planned on introducing the new guys, answer an add, meet during an encounter? BAsically, calmly or in a rush of adrenaline? Just wondering how to tonw the background sections.

Thx, get better soon! enjoying the main thread, can't wait to be involved!

Oh, would you prefer that all chatter went over to your Disscussion thread now?

Laters,...

I'll tell you what Lynora, do the spoiler over in the discussion thread, I'll post a link.

>>LINK TO SILVER ROSE DISCUSSION THREAD<<

Let's bring our character building over here for now, and let this thread die so we can streamline the process. :)

Howdy. I'm just visiting now, but will be looking in again soon. I wanted to say hello.

This always looked like a fun game. If there is room, I wouldn't mind playing a Xaositect who talks in literary quotes. :D

Good to see you, dude!

Fabes, I'll put you on the alternates list. I think there are four, but two were 1st time posters, and I haven't seen them about. K is taking a sabbatical, so perhaps after the next mission is over I'll throw it open for some more. :)

this looks very dead

Recruitment for an old game usually does. I hadn't even seen your post until I accidentally clicked it open today, lol. The game itself still soldiers on

Hello to all trig cutters out in the Cage!

The Chronicles of the Silver Rose has one spot open for a character built around skills (ie: rogue/bard). We're a long-playing game, and we'd like to have someone join us who is a good poster, and enjoys a more narrative type of game. We have fun, kill monsters and take their stuff. We also tour the Great Wheel, dropping in on Yggdrasil, the Elemental Plane of Fire, The Paraelemental Plane of Salt,The Outlands, the Abyss and of course Sigil.

A few points:

A knowledge of the 2nd Edition Planescape campaign would be good, but not necessary

We talk and BS a lot. Serious combat-oriented folks might get bored

Anything goes. Seriously. Look at the characters past and present

If you think you might be interested take a look at the gameplay. Also, under the Campaign Info tab is a few links to some of our more memorable moments.

There is but one spot, but anyone interested should get a character together. 9th level, heroic points, normal cash.

Hope to hear from you!

what sort of creation rules are you using?

gestalt?

not familiar with hero points really.

is this all Pathfinder or is it 3.5 mixed in? (like Avalon)

Sorry i meant a 20-point buy for stats. I could have sworn that was called heroic. But I'm spotty on the term

Also I've allowed stuff from 3.5. This game actually predates Pathfinder, but we use that rule set now mostly. But we have a duskblade, and we had a warlock in the past so anything 3.5 to now is kosher

ok thanks, cause I looked back in the recruitment thread and saw a 32 point buy somewhere.

I see you want a skills person... was thinking fetchling possibly a ninja.

wanted to go assassin but that pesky required evil alignment thing.

kill things and take their stuff and get rich = good
kill things and collect a bounty = good
kill stuff and get paid = evil?

Hey DM, I will throw in a character this evening for consideration.

Sounds good! I'll take a look at the characters when they are listed and give you a decision.

I plan on being from the Prime, does the world of origin matter for my Backstory?

Skill based character? Ooh, I have an idea. Sylph Factotum. Working on it now.

OK great, I will be from the Realms then. Will work on that tomorrow, shot for the evening. :-)

OK Patrick, what I intend to do is link my character's story. what I am afraid of, is the fact that it is the main character of a story I was making in the Campaign Journal thread. and it is pretty long.

but you don't have to read much of it to get an idea of the character.

the 32 was the 3.5 point buy, pathfinder is 20 I think, but they both basically work out the same.

We're also a pretty good party in general, though Pat has allowed some questionable folks in (looking at you Drazek Darkholme :P ), but I personally don't mind evil (light) so long as it's not evil (disruptive) or evil (anti social). Also commonly called CE. It's not my campaign though so I don't have the final say.

Yes it's three in the morning and I've just spent an hour working on the character. Having a character muse that doesn't understand the need for sleep is both awesome and terrible. Tempest Rainbow Aurora Sky is coming along nicely, but still needs some polishing before publishing.

But I'll give you a hint - Imagine what childhood is like growing up in the Society of Sensation...

A Sensate character would be interesting Philo. The group has never crossed the threshold of the Civic Festhall yet, although they have had interactions with a certain Eryines who operates a shop in the district...

The concept in your journal looks interesting Edward. I'll be interested to see the stats!

A very nice stat block, and very skills oriented. Good show Shadow. You also have 46,000 gold as a starting amount at your level to flesh out the gear =)

I will echo this. It IS my campaign, and I do not condone full evil. Drazek was about as close as I wanted to get, and even he caused tensions. I'm glad Vulcan went with Rhiannon eventually.

Obviously, murderhoboitry isn't the definition of Good with a capital 'G'. But, the group is fundamentally good-hearted, and the players as well. I think I can speak for the game when I say evil characters will not mesh well. Neutral is fine.

Great, I will have the Background and the Gear done this evening. Should my story take me into the Planes near where the characters are now or will you handle that part of the transition?

Oh and on alignment, the characters alignment will be Chaotic Good.

I will figure something out Shadow. They are going into a very hostile Prime world shortly (Think post undead-apocalypse) and there will be opportunities to segue your character into there. The world has an adventuring outpost that the characters have used (it's a shortcut from Yggdrasil to Sigil). The party has used this shortcut before, and you can view that bit >>here<<.

If you are chosen we can figure out the whys and wherefores. You might be hanging around Fort Pelor or actually delving the dangerous ruins of Ranais...

Tempest will be chaotic good and more than willing to step in to help out. I'm still refining the character (I've gotten rusty at building characters without HeroLab's help), but I have the story.

Tempest's story:

Growing up as a child in the Society of Sensation is ... surprising. At school, children are encouraged to follow their instincts. They direct their own learning based on their interests. When you have a child that taught themselves to read before they were out of diapers, it can be hard for the parents and facilitators to keep up. Tempest Rainbow Aurora Sky was such a child. She was literally interested in everything. Given that the Sensates felt that knowledge came from experiences and not books this meant that it was challenging to keep up with the young student.

On top of learning, they felt that children should be surprised and challenged. Trips to different planes. Coming in to find the school filled with animals of all kinds. Giving the whole class potions of gender shift. Plays performed in the midst of the children. Polymorphing the students into giants. Exploring how drink and drugs affects the mind. Feather falling from great heights.

And even some less pleasant experiences. Senstaes understand that fear and pain are teachers as much as fun and joy are. Children need to learn from that, but under controlled situations. Emotion spells to start with, Fear followed by Joy to ensure that they understood that fear is transitory. Later there was Pain training. Students who withstood pain well were celebrated. Older sudents were taken to other wards and left, to learn how to navigate the city. They were watched, but didn't know that.

Tempest's parents were keepers at the Sensorium. Recording memories is dear to sensates - being able to step into the feet of another and relive their most cherished moments is priceless. The keepers limit access, in part because so many people want it that the need to control the time. But there's a darker reason. Too many memories in too short a time can lead to madness. Sensates in the know sometimes see this in certain Xaositects.

They rotate the memories in the sensorium, and store the extras in a secret vault under the festhall. Figuring out how to steal they keys, defeat the traps and avoid the guards was a challenge for a young girl. She was found after a day, unconscious, with two crystals in her hand at once. She recovered with no lasting damage.

Having so many experiences all her life was a thrill to Tempest. She was always bright, and saw patterns well. She figured out that if you study the tricks of the true experts in any field you could cheive greatness without all that tedious building up the basics. Of course there's limits to that, but when you need to know everything it's a worthwhile tradeoff.

As an adult, she's lept from one thing to another. She circled the ring in 83 days, travelling through all of the outer planes from portal to portal. Naturally, she didn't do all of the planes alone. She's fought in wars, dined with kings, danced with a devil in the pale moonlight (It was a difficult relationship, and eventually she had to cut him off. At the neck.) She's gained and lost fortunes. She's loved and lost and moved on.

Ok it will be straight up ninja then. True neutral alignment.

I really wasnt asking to be evil rather a bit of wondering why the assassin class neeeds to be evil.

But no biggie, it was only the death attack i was really gaining.

Hamar Gear:
46,000. Scimitar +1 Keen, Planar - 18,000. Scimitar Keen Invigorating - 18,000. Leather Armor +2 Deathless 9,000. Belt of Tumbling 800. Assisting Gloves 180 GP. Other mundane gear 5 GP. Remaining Gold 15.

Will have stats and alias done soon.

Like tonight

I like what I am seeing so far from everyone. I'll have a hard choice , you all are putting a lot into the characters and I appreciate that

ok the stats for Talon are in the profile.

just to be up front.. I really don't know much about Sigil, or the planescape setting.
