Fineos NPC |
@Fineos "You are as bad as they with this madness to fight."
Nods, perhaps Fineos you should duel the leader.. either that or shut your trap, people are dead or wounded here.
"Well I never!"
"One does not tell the King's chosen minstrel to 'shut his trap!' If you wish silence, then be silent. And no need for me to step in and help you with that fight there; you are doing just fine. You just need to have more confidence. Allow my music to inspire you."
"And I'm afraid there's no cure for their madness. It is a mercy to put them down."
Lost City DM |
Ferrous misses once again.
18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (3) = 15
The leader takes a swing at Fistep again (but misses) and then steps back.
"Fineos, I hope you get gangrene of the @&*#!!!"
The other man steps back through the doorway and is out of sight.
Round 6 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Fistep, Fineos, Montague, Talikshim
Block 2: Masked men
Block 3: Ferrous, Zynazyr
Init. Ferrous: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
Init. Fistep: 7 = 7
Init. Montague: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 3) + 1 = 7
Init. Talikshim: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 6) + 2 = 9
Init. Zynazyr: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 4) + 3 = 9
Init. Fineos: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9
Init. Masked Men: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8
Round 7 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Fineos, Talikshim, Zynazyr
Block 2: Masked men
Block 3: Ferrous, Fistep, Montague
Zynazyr is up. Looks like I messed up a bit and had Ferrous act early, but I don't think it matters.
Then the next round starts and Ana, Talikshim, and Zynazyr are up. This does mean that Zynazyr gets to act twice in a row.
Talikshim: FYI You no longer have line-of-sight to any enemies. You will need to move to be able to see the enemy leader.
Zynazyr |
Frustrated that the rebels have been able to retreat, Zynazyr again attempts to shut the door to cut off the leader from his men.
cantrip: 1d6 ⇒ 6 lol, if I needed high, I'd be rolling 1s

You and Ferrous can be the dice-rolling team.
Zynazyr's cantrip fails to activate.
Zynazyr: round 6 is over, but you have initiative in round 7 so you get to act again. FYI, if you succeed in closing the door, there is nothing stopping the enemy from just opening it again. All it will do is slow him down slightly. Cantrips do not exert enough force to compete with actual muscle strength.
Zynazyr |
Feeling that his spells are letting him down, Zynazyr pulls out a dagger and throws it at the leader before he can retreat into the room. He curses to himself as the dagger goes wide of its mark.
Ranged: 19 - 1d20 ⇒ 19 - (10) = 9added -1 penalty
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Round 7 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Fineos, Talikshim, Zynazyr
Block 2: Masked men
Block 3: Ferrous, Fistep, Montague
Then the next round starts and Ana, Talikshim, andZynazyrare up.
[ooc]Still waiting on Ana and Talikshim. Will bot them if I don't hear from them by tomorrow.
Anastoria |
Ana tries again to hit the leader with her bow.
THAC0 20: 20 - 1d20 ⇒ 20 - (16) = 4
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Lost City DM |
Ana finally lands a hit with her bow, while Talikshim waits for something to change. I will count that as delaying if you want to stay in combat)
No longer engaged in melee, the enemy leader falls back through the door, and shouts, "Bar this door! Quickly!" You can hear wooden objects moving around in the room.
Round 7 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Fineos, Talikshim, Zynazyr
Block 2: Masked men
Block 3: Ferrous, Fistep, Montague
If you want to hurry and try to knock down/force open the door we can remain in combat order (in which case Ferrous, Fistep, and Montague are up) but if you want to take your time then combat is over.
Ferrous Grimgond |
Ferrous walks up to Montague and strikes him across the face with a slap.
Coward. Where were you in that fight? Are ye a member of this party or no? Your fellows are getting wounded so that ye can eat and drink and live have the decency not to so blatantly hide behind their wounds.
Why not finally make yourself useful and search the area outside this door they barred themselves in.
Ferrous storms over to the door next to Fistep and punches it with a gauntleted fist.
Montague |
When the action calms down Montague steps out of his hidey hole, and finds himself attacked by his own party member.
"What do you know about me. You with your armour and weapon skills. I grew up in the streets with nobody to help me, and I learned how to survive, which is what I do. You hit things, I open things. Were I to die by foolishly trying to attack something that I have no chance of hitting, then who would find your traps for you and open your doors? Those can kill you as fast as a sword. You are not a god to judge what is good and bad about a person".
Montague moves over to search the area around the door, giving dirty glances to Ferrous as he searches.
1d6 ⇒ 6 Search for traps
1d6 ⇒ 6 Search for secret doors.
He then turns to the surely dwarf. "I am not a coward. I'm here aren't I? I do what I must to survive. Perhaps instead of proving your skills by slapping me unexpectedly you should instead turn your time into teaching me to use weapons and fight".
Lost City DM |
Fistep body-checks the door with his shield, but it is clear that several people are holding it shut, and furniture is being moved in front of it to block it. The door is ordinary wood though, and could be chopped down.
I am assuming you guys are taking time and not rushing to knock down the door.
6d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 3, 3, 6) = 19
Opposite the door in the hallway Fistep notices a small hole in the wall at about head height. The other side is dark but it seems to be a peephole that looks past the statue into the hallway beyond.
The room to the east looks like a dormitory. Three bunk beds line the eastern and northern wall. A small table sits against the south wall and several chairs sit around it. The furniture looks very old and worn.
On the table is a clay pitcher, and a wide clay pot with a lid sits on the floor. Between them there is about 1 & 1/2 gallons of water!
There is also a wooden trunk that contains a variety of preserved foods - some dried meat and mushrooms, some hard odd-smelling bread, and a few jars of some sort of brown paste (which is basically Marmite). This amounts to 36 half-meals.
The seven dead men are wearing masks inlaid with gold, worth about 50 gp each. They also have chainmail and normal swords.
Fistep: Do you wish to trade up to Chainmail from your studded leather? This will improve your AC by 1, but your move will drop to 20'.
Montague: Bing! Despite your non-participation in the recent fight, the acquisition of all the stuff here has put you over the top - the next time you camp you will gain a level.
Also, Montague: For the record your chance to hit with a ranged weapon is better than Ferrous's chance to hit in melee. So normally it would make more sense to stand behind the others and make ranged attacks. I know you were rolling badly early on but look at how Ferrous has been rolling. :) FYI Ferrous is also short enough that he doesn't block your shots (so no penalty shooting/throwing through his space).
Fineos NPC |
"Well done, friends!" Fineos simes and claps, and goes around patting people on the back. "These seven rebels will trouble the kingdom no more. They got better than they deserved."
He looks at the door sternly. "Now we have them trapped in this room! All we need to do is put some poison gas under the door and kill them like rats! Do any of you have poison gas? I'm afraid I'm all out."
Lost City DM |
12:50 PM, Day 2
What do you want to do now?
* Smash the door down and pursue?
* Barricade the door?
* Return to camp with the supplies you just obtained?
* Explore some other area (like down the stairs)?
Montague |
I know that mechanically Montague could hit, but I'm role playing the fact that he lost all confidence in his ability to hit with all the bad rolls. Maybe he'll find a new bow somewhere, and have better luck.
"Should we return with the supplies to the others? I would hate for this to all disappear if we left it".
Ferrous Grimgond |
I understood your roleplaying and was playing along. Hopefully Ferrous comments weren't taken a personal slam on your tactics. He is a simple dwarf who saw a party member not fighting and took his own frustrations at missing several times out on that player. Also as noted above Ferrous is a lousy fighter he will rarely hit but when he does he does decent damage. He also has a ton of hp. He definitely is more of a traditional tank.
Ferrous looks offended at Fistep's comment until he sees the fighter smile and then the dwarf realizes that he is the butt of a joke between comrades and laughs heartily.
Aye but who will teach me Human. The elf? then very softly
Maybe this mad frogman?
Then louder in answer to the Montague.
Maybe you should return with one of the others and Fineos carrying the supplies.
Ferrous Grimgond |
Aye I do, but what if there be a second door to that room. We should jam this door but search around here for another possible exit.
Ferrous takes a moment to take out his iron spikes and hammer. He readies a spike between the door and the wall.
Zynazyr |
Zynazyr is surprised by Ferrous slapping Montague. "I better pull my weight. Maybe the heat and lack of water are starting to get to us," he thinks to himself.
When they find the water, he rubs his eyes to make sure he's not seeing something. He quickly gets a drink, savoring the liquid as he holds it in his dry mouth a moment before swallowing it. "Ahh, that's refreshing. I wonder if they have more in that room. What are we going to do about them?" he says as he ponders their options.
When Montague mentions the others, he quickly puts his finger to his lips. "Shhh. Not so loudly. We don't want others to hear and start searching for them." Glancing at the barricaded door, he listens to the plan to spike it shut. "I believe it opens into the room. How will using spikes keep them from opening it? But I agree we need to do something. I too need to rest. Unfortunately, our attack was not as successful as I had hoped and I believe will make parlaying with them difficult at best. What can you tell us about them?" he says turning to Fineos.

Glancing at the barricaded door, he listens to the plan to spike it shut. "I believe it opens into the room. How will using spikes keep them from opening it?"
Zynazyr is correct. Ferrous- you could probably figure out something using the spikes, though it could be time consuming. There are a variety of pieces of furniture in the room to work with.
FYI you have already done a cursory search of the room, and found no secret doors or anything else interesting (aside from the peephole Fistep found). If you wish to continue searching you can spend a full additional turn if you like (which would allow another roll).
Fineos NPC |
Aye but who will teach me Human. The elf? then very softly
Maybe this mad frogman?
"Ah, you have but to ask! I will be happy to teach the military arts to a novice like yourself! Such skills would be valuable for those in service to the king."
Fineos produces a small knife, with a notched and likely dull blade. He holds it out like an epee.
"Hold your weapon like it is as light as a feather. Movement is the key; your weapon should dance! It's all in the wrists. Force your enemy to concentrate on it, like he will never know where you will strike next!"
Fineos waves his little knife around in the air and dances around - though he looks more like an orchestra conductor than a duelist.
"Then, when your enemy is befuddled by your amazing finesse..."
Fineos suddenly tries to kick Ferrous between the legs.
19 - 1d20 ⇒ 19 - (13) = 6
But Ferrous steps easily to the side, and Fineos' foot connects with nothing but air. He flies ass-over-teakettle and lands on his posterior.
"ouch."
He gets up slowly, his knees creaking. He rubs his back as he straightens out.
"I meant to do that."
Fineos NPC |
"Unfortunately, our attack was not as successful as I had hoped and I believe will make parlaying with them difficult at best. What can you tell us about them?" he says turning to Fineos.
"I can tell you that there's no point in parlaying with them, if that's what you are asking. You could get confused, and in a moment of weakness make the mistake of promising to let them live. Then you have to figure out whether there's some way to weasel out of what you promised, or whether you just have to break your word."
"But those ones serve some fusty old god. They are mad! They actually think that this god of theirs is more important than the king. Can you believe that?"
"Are you sure none of you has poison gas? Maybe if we pour flaming oil under the door..."
Montague |
Montague takes a sip of the new found water and swishes it about in his mouth, before swallowing, then taking another.
"Let's take some of this to the others. I'm not sure it is safe for us to separate, but I fear if we leave the door unguarded they will escape and bring more help.".
Montague then looks at the escapades of Fineous and snorts.
"Personally I'm starting to think taking sides with obviously competent warriors with a God behind them is a better option than this fool with his supposed king. Do you think they would listen after we attacked them"?
Fistep |
Levels his sword at the "frogman"as he steps forward, I would shut your trap, before I make it permanently shut. With his shield he gestures to the fallen men, There are dead here that fought bravely, unlike you spinless self who can only run your mouth.
Then ignoring the fool, he gestures to the beds. Beds and trash piled up between the door and the wall will make it hard for them to escape at least long enough to go take some food and water to the others
With that said, he takes his portion of the water and bit of food; rather a bit famished from the exchange of blows.
Fineos NPC |
"Yes lull your opponent into a false sense of security...."
"Hmmm... yes, I suppose parlaying would have that advantage. Good idea!"
"...with obviously competent warriors with a God behind them ..."
"Bah! They worship a god of thunder and lightning. They only care about smiting things! They have destroyed so much... King Alexander, on the other hand, is a great builder! This pyramid itself was built by his decree! Choose a god if all you want to do is smash things... but the King stands for civilization!"
"For all we know Fineous's king is a dirty sock he keeps in his back pocket that he places upon his own hand to issue royal decrees."
"That is an outrage! Such talk is treason! Alexander is the greatest king that ever lived!"
"Besides that, I don't have any socks. At the moment. Or pockets, for that matter."
Fineos looks down at his ragged clothing somewhat dejectedly, then quickly brightens up. "But... the royal tailors are making a wondrous suit of clothes for me, which should be ready any day now. Then I shall be a sight to behold!"
Levels his sword at the "frogman"as he steps forward, I would shut your trap, before I make it permanently shut. With his shield he gestures to the fallen men, There are dead here that fought bravely, unlike you spinless self who can only run your mouth.
"Don't even think it, young man. Great punishments await those who harm the King's personal retainers. And besides, I am the King's Minstrel. I am supposed to sing! I doubt you would have had the courage to face so many enemies were it not for my inspiring songs!"
Lost City DM |
1:00 PM, Day 2
The party moves piles of furniture in front of the door, blocking it for now.
A few Points of Order:
1. I assume you are returning the supplies to camp now. Yes?
2. Do you want to secure the barricade with Iron Spikes, nailing things together, etc? Or is the furniture just going to be loose?
3. How much water do you want to drink now? Again, I would prefer if everyone has the same amount so that record-keeping is easier for me. So far you haven't had anything to drink today.
4. Likewise, How much food do you want to eat now? So far you have had a single half-meal today.
5. What is the plan after you have dropped off supplies at the camp?
* Return here and enter the barricaded room?
* Explore other areas (such as the stairs down)?
* Rest for the rest of the day (and continue adventuring when Montague is level 2)?
* Something else?
Lost City DM |
not sure what the damage should be
That is certainly a hit.
Roll Damage as if the sword does damage two die types less, so 1d6 in your case. Half this damage is nonlethal (round up). FYI you can still kill someone this way.
BTW: Your THACO with your sword is 16, not 17, unless you are "pulling your punches." "Pulling a Punch" means voluntarily attacking with less than your normal STR bonus, as it applies to both to-hit and damage. Bringing THACO to 17 would actually be a -2 to your STR since DEX is also a factor, so if that is what you meant to do then you roll 1d6+1 for damage. If you meant to attack full force it would be 1d6+3.
Fistep |
1. I assume you are returning the supplies to camp now. Yes?
Sure
2. Do you want to secure the barricade with Iron Spikes, nailing things together, etc? Or is the furniture just going to be loose?
Might as well spike the furniture.
3. How much water do you want to drink now? Again, I would prefer if everyone has the same amount so that record-keeping is easier for me. So far you haven't had anything to drink today.
I'd say that we all drink our one quart. So that would be 4 half-pints each, for total of 24 which would be the amount that is on the table... 1.5 gallons is 12 pints, which is 24 half-pints, and a quart is 2 pints.
That'd leave nothing for the others... so maybe half a quart each for now, and take the rest to the others?
4. Likewise, How much food do you want to eat now? So far you have had a single half-meal today.
Half-rations is 3 half-meals a day... so at least one half-meal, and keep 6 more half-meals. Keep this set of half-meals, and take the various half-meals we still have to the others?
I realize its shorting them, but they aren't out adventuring and fighting trying to find the water and such. We die, they die.
5. What is the plan after you have dropped off supplies at the camp?
* Return here and enter the barricaded room?
Or at least try and parlay with the leader?
Zynazyr |
Zynazyr nods at Fistep's suggestions. In a hushed voice so that others beyond the group can't hear, he adds "I may not be much help until I can rest though. However, I realize we can't leave these men unattended for so long. Perhaps someone could keep our 'friend' in another room while someone tries to parlay?"
