As Braggi rushs the beast he passes inside it's reach, the beast lashing out with a Long leg: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 but missing wide as he sidesteps the lunge.

Braggi's strike cuts deep into the large spider-thing, hacking apart a leg and gouging deep into it's side, one not filled with normal squishy bits but tough and fibrous, like a rotting sapling or waterlogged mast from a sunken galley. In response the creature puffs out a billowy cloud of green and grey spores which momentarily cuts off vision before slowly drifting in the air, the particulates hovering slowly, not yet settling to the ground. Poison Fort Save please Braggi, and anyone else passing into the cloud, until it dissipates.

The spider reacts itself to the blow by rearing up and Biting: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 at the offending sailor, it's mandibles tearing feebly at his shoulder for Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 and requiring an additional Poison Fort Save

Though he seems to resist at first glance, the huge amount of poison in his organism finally takes its toll, debilitating the sailor but not before having left the spider literally open for his companions to finish.

Sorry, yesterday was slammed.

@Braggi, Rage is a Free Action so yes, and yes you are required to make two saves.

@Musami, you will need to make another save next round.

Musami's mace glances off the strange spider at an angle, doing little more than dislodging a few bits of fungus and puffing more spores into the air.

Zokama's arrow finds a narrow gap in the smaller creature's shell, burying itself in the beast.

Filnefillan fires off a burst of Magical Missiles: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 7 which burst against the smaller spider as well, causing it to hiss in an annoying, high pitched manner, moving along it's webbing towards the tree line, gesticulating as it does so.

The smaller spider creature responds by releasing a spore cloud of it's own, the spores only different in that they seem to give off a faint bio-luminescent glow. The creature then warily dances from side to side on the webbed bushes it made for it's home. Musami must make an additional save against these spores.

To recap, 2 Fort Saves for Braggi, 2 Fort Saves for Musami

Braggi feels his lungs starting to burn from the strange pollens clogging his chest and embedding themselves into his tissues. He takes Real CON Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2 and becomes Fatigued. Braggi will need to make a Fort Save next round for the spores. Basically the cloud requires two consecutive successful saves. Poison stings require one successful save.

Despite the pain in his chest and limbs Braggi hacks mightily into the body of the large spider, a cut feeling much like chopping wood rather than squashing a bug.

The spider in return, hissing like it's counterpart, strikes at the sailor with it's Mandibles: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29, Confirmation: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10, the fangs piercing his side for Damage: 1d10 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 and injecting further venoms, his blood burning fiercely and an evil coldness flowing into the bite mark. Sorry for going out of turn. My save v poison is below, but before I do anything further, I am not sure of my exact situation. Do I get a reflex save to avoid being webbed, or is it just automatic? Am I grappled? You said save v distraction, but is that if I just stand there in the swarm and do something else, or do I need to do that even if I am just trying to escape?

Fort Save v Poison: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

@Braggi, you suffer the effects of Fatigue but may continue Raging. After you end the Rage you will be Exhausted instead of Fatigued.

@Zokama, you are not being webbed as in Grappled but at this stage the swarm is covering you in threads which allow them to swarm you easily. 100's of tiny resinous webs in your hair, eyelashes, between your armor and skin, etc. You need to Save vs the Distraction as a result of the attack itself, regardless of any actions you take. If you fail the save you will be Nauseated, and only able to take a single move action.

Ah, got it. Thanks.

Fort Save v Distraction: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Okay, so Zokama moves, but since the spiders are webbing her, do they move with her, or is this just like a regular swarm that you can walk away from? If she can walk away, then she will take a shot (the out of turn post, likely a miss), but if she has to do something special to get them off her, then she will attempt that (if it doesn't take more than a standard action).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It is otherwise a regular swarm, so you can move from the webbing. If I use a capital W in webbing then it would represent a game mechanic and I will post the need for a save, etc. Flavor text is more to give you the willies that spiders are crawling all over, webbing is everywhere, (hair, nose, ears, mouth) and little insects are biting you in delicate places best left unmentioned. And of course laying eggs, always remember the egg laying...

Musami smashes his mace into the large spider, finishing the death that Braggi started. With it's death however the cloud fails to dissipate, the wind and air still close and stale in this canopied clearing of such ancient and valuable hardwoods.

Zokama steps back from the swarm of strange spiders, creatures in miniature like unto the large and fallen beast, many still clinging to her and crawling about, their efforts somewhat lessened while separate of their larger enmasse. Her arrow misses the smaller spider, deflecting off it's curved abdomen, shipping away only a small cluster of fungal protrusions and adding a bit more spores to the thick fog of the place.

Filnefillan steps aside and flings a pair of mystic missiles at the smaller spider, catching it for Damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 = 6, the projectiles smashing it near to it's many faceted eyes, angering it even further, and causing it to slip a bit from it's perch.

The smaller spider rushes forth from it's webbed nest and launches itself at Zokoma, spitting at her with it's Own Web: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13, covering her it the sticky mass, a long trailing bundle leading back to her many legs, it's mandibles snapping eagerly in anticipation. Zokama steps out of the web. She is tempted to cast spark to burn up some of the webs around her, but worries that it will endanger the trees. She thinks about summoning some of the spider's natural predators to have a feast, but isn't sure yet whether there are more large spiders in wait somewhere. So, she ends up just casting mage hand and starting to clear the web off the nearby bushes (range 35 feet).

I don't have any area effect spells that would harm the swarm, and that is the only current target, right? I could cast spark and burn up their webs with them inside, but it would also burn Fil, and you know... could set the forest on fire, which would destroy the whole point of being here. Plus, I don't want to have to fight Smokey the Bear.

Woops, sorry. Somehow I didn't notice the update. The warning was there, I just didn't notice.

Fil is holding the scroll of burning hands and most of the other scrolls, unfortunately.

Frustrated at not being able to help Fil, Zokama realizes that killing the swarm necessitates a risk to his life. Since it looks like he is going to die anyway if she does nothing, she pulls out a bead of force and throws it at Fil, hard.

Bead of Force damage: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 5, 5) = 15

That should kill the spiders, and then it encloses Fil in a resilient sphere unless he saves (DC 16 Reflex)

She worries it might kill him, but if he survives, it should keep him safe until they can finish wiping out the spiders.

Bead Saves

Fil Reflex DC 16: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

The blast knocks the prone elf aside, tossing his body much like a rag doll back up the trail away from Zokoma and the others. The swarm however, the few not currently a pasty white ooze on the exterior of the purplish globe, are trapped within the sphere and too few to ever be much of a threat or concern again.

Making your way around the magical barrier you find Filnefillan unconscious, mildly poisoned, covered in sticky webbing, stable and still alive. A few points in the negative perhaps but he survives.

Plans? Next actions? I might re-emphasis these are not "normal" spiders. Some kind of fungal growth has overtaken them, even the little ones of the swarm.

Once combat - but not danger - is over, Braggi relaxes and feels all the weigh of the fatigue on him. He can barely move, and chooses a rock to sit while Zokama collects the ingredients needed and they can go back to the village. The day is wasted between the travelling, the fighting and the recovering, and Braggi can only hope tomorrow they are in good shape to go back to the moat. With their holy man disappeared, this might be quite costly if they want to rush the healing.

Braggi is exhausted, not fatigued. The fatigue from the ending Rage compounds the fatigue he already received during the battle. Are you sure your save was +8 after the CON damage and the Rage having ended?

No, I assumed he would stay a further round in Rage after the combat, while the poison still lasted. Also, last Con damage was 1 and Braggi has an odd Con score, so it shouldn't have lowered his Con bonus. If that's okay to you, I'll substract another round of Rage from the alias when I get home later - silly messageboards won't let me update the alias from my phone. If not, then you should substract 3 from the roll, I think.

[ooc]Considering that Rage lasts for the combat, encounter, or until voluntarily ended, with Braggi already Fatigued and facing Exhaustion, I would not allow him to continue raging once the threat was eliminated, even if only to keep the Save Bonus active. Had he failed would he have continued raging until down or out of Rage Points? The Save was successful either way considering the bonus I allowed for only trace exposure to the second cloud, but I was curious if I was missing a bonus somewhere.

There aren't ingredients to gather... we just have to wipe out the spiders, which doesn't seem to be done. I think there was also a boar, but we haven't seen that yet. However, if you want to leave, we can. I can just give the guy money for the bow instead.

Zokama investigates the fungus to see if it is also affecting the trees, or where it could be coming from. With Fil hurt, she doesn't know if pursuing this further is wise, but she wants to make the effort to see if there is a way to solve the problem that is within their power.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

She casts Unseen Servant to clean off the webbing from the grove while she investigates.

Zokoma finds a small, crude ceramic statuette of a humanoid looking toadstool within the larger nest, the one used by the bigger spider. The item was clutched in the skeletal hand of some kind of humanoid, too few bones remaining to give a definitive identification. The piece is cracked, but a central gemstone which had been fitted into the base is whole and intact, giving off a faint purplish glow and emitting a faint whiff of mold and mildew, though whether from itself or the filth glummed over the icon is difficult to determine.

The boar was not in this part of the woods, but rather a copse of byrnen trees about a mile or three over the next two hills. From everything the woodcutter mentioned the boar is likely just a normal boar, perhaps a bit more seasoned by age but as feisty as any other such beast. He may well be satisfied with just this grove, though he'll likely not add in the quiver of quality arrows if he still will need to hunt down the boar on his own later.

Loot Sheet Female Human (Flan) Detective Bard 5 | HP 28/28 | CMB +6 / CMD +18 | AC 17 / T 12 / FF 15 | Fort +2 / Ref +6 / Will +6 | Initiative +2 | Bardic Performances 15/15 | Action Points 3/3 | Perception +12/+14 to detect traps | Active Effects: Ioun Torch

Zokama takes the gem and compares it to the other purple gem that she picked up. She cleans it off with prestidigitation, hoping that it isn't the source of the contamination but perhaps was just used to power whatever it was. (Unless anything special/different is noted about it, she stores it in a bandolier pocket with the other one.)

She also removes the cracked statuette, looking at it with detect magic to make sure it is inert. She brings it with her to show the woodcutter, and if it isn't radiating any kind of magic she will then smash it to bits so it isn't easily repaired. (If it is, they will likely need to investigate further.)

Yeah, I think we should just go back and regroup. I'll apologize to the woodcutter for not killing the boar, but at least we did part of what he wanted, and it sounds like this place was either corrupted on purpose, or the spider found some corrupted item somewhere, related to the group we found that was after the purple gems earlier. Weird.

Although... maybe we should check the boar to make sure it isn't influenced by an item as well? What do the rest of you guys think?

The gemstone is nearly identical to the previously found stone, similar size, cut, and clarity. It radiates in a manner consistent with the other stone, and once removed from the figurine only the stone continues to possess mystic qualities.

Okay, we find a safe place for Fil to recover and go to find the boar.

(dum dum dum... this is where we find out that it is a vampiric wereboar, and we all get turned into bloodsucking pigs.)

Does anyone want to attempt to search the area for tracks of other indicators of the boar, or follow the rough directions to where the boar's supposed den is located?

Zokama will keep an eye out for anything obvious, but her perception skills far surpass her survival skills, so I doubt she would be able to track it.

As they go closer to the area where the boar is supposed to be, Zokama keeps an eye out for signs of it.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Survival: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Ha ha... that's hilarious. Exactly the same score. :)

Anyone else? Musami or Braggi?

Musami Forgeborn Male Dwarf Fighter (Foehammer) (5) HP 54/54 | AC:24 | T:12 | FF:23 CMB: +9 (+2 Sunder, Trip, Bullrush, Overrun)| CMD:21 (25 Vs Bullrush & Trip) | Fort:+7 | Ref:+2 | Will:+2 (+2 vs. poison, spells, and spell-like abilities, +1 vs fear) | Init:+1 | Perc: +3 | Speed 20') | Speed 20ft | Active Condition: -24NL Damage, Shaken

Musami is no tracker. He will follow Zokama to where he was directed to look.

"Uf... It hurts... Let me help you, but only a bit..."

The sailor tries to be attentive at any signs, though he has a difficult time focusing.

Zokama casts Cure Light Wounds on Braggi:

CLW: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

After nearly twenty minutes of trudging through the brush your small band finds tracks of recent rooting and rustling of a large animal, after a few minutes longer finding prints from a boar, and judging from the size and depth, roughly the size of a pony.

A short distance later you find a clearing heavily trampled and trafficked by the large beast. On the far side a dead-fall has built up with heavy brush, tumbled stones, and a hefty mass of overgrown foliage. A dark and hollow looking opening appears to the left of the mass, little larger than a chubby youth.

From a few feet back Musami will look into the dark opening.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Musami focuses on the darkness and feels the darkness looking back at him, imagining shadows and movement, dark things undreamt of, but is ultimately unable to determine fact from fiction. Whether this is from lingering effects of the spores, realization of how close Fil came to the end, or merely the stress of a long day the dwarf cannot decide...
