I've been thinking a great deal about narrative control in dungeon world. I enjoy giving as much narrative control to the PCs as possible. On an unrelated note, I find my greatest difficulty as a DW GM is the defy danger 7-9 result. In an effort to kill two birds with one stone, I've been playing around with a re-write of Defy Danger. What do you think of this? Is it madness? Would you be willing to playtest it for a bit in our game?

I added the XP incentive to drive the players towards upping the ante. Another bonus for PbP, is that we've all seen that a player can in theory continue narrating a scene until they hit a 6- generally, or a 7-9 on a defy danger (alternatively, a player will get a 7-9, continuing the narration and it becomes difficult to retcon). If the player has control over 7-9, then a post doesn't really NEED to end until a 6- is rolled.

When you act despite an imminent threat or suffer a calamity, say how you deal with it and roll. If you do it

by powering through, +Str
by getting out of the way or acting fast, +Dex
by enduring, +Con
with quick thinking, +Int
through mental fortitude, +Wis
using charm and social grace, +Cha

✴On a 7+, you do what you set out to and the specific threat doesn’t come to bear.

✴On a 7–9, describe how the situation worsens for your character, the party, or the world. If the GM is impressed by your creative masochism, mark XP.

I hope you've realized that you have just written me a blank check for buttloads of xp.

but actually, that's really cool, may implement it over in my game, after you beta test it

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

I'm fine with handing out XP like candy because this system doesn't really increase power alongside the level curve. Higher level characters just have more narrative options.

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

Also thought of a slight change to the 7-9 to remove GM awarding xp for "approved play."

On a 7-9, describe how the situation worsens for your character, the party, or the world. If the other players are impressed or dismayed by your creative masochism, mark XP. (Yes, the PC is asked to make a soft move).

This brilliance will work very well for this group, and it is a great fit for larger PBP groups like these.

That comes from someone who had resevations going into your post.

Android Engine of Destruction | Lvl 6 | XP: 10 | HP: 14/27 | Armor 4 | 1d10 | STR +3 | DEX +1 | CON +2 | INT 0 | WIS 0 | CHA -1 | Blood: 4

Can the soft move be fobbed off to anyone else? I'm reminded of Lyntel's dream sequences in Mooshy's Dungeon World game. Those were fun in a sadistic way.

I am at once both attracted and horrified by this opportunity/crises (crisetunity?). How exactly would be that determined? Would the first player that cares to field it, be allowed to "Yes. Get 1 XP. Now this is what happens to you...."? Or does the PC themselves get to vote? How many votes are needed to get? If the PC themselves write the move, would they be able to then Defy Danger against it also? Could they have an entire Rube Goldberg machine of moves happen to them?

(On an off note, for as much as I like the word "odium" (fear + loathing) it seems like there should be a word for "attracted + horrified".)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Zogentsetzt would be an appropriate German compound word. Google translate gives "attracted horrified" as zogen entsetzt which is just too good to pass up.

Male Human Survivor | Lvl 4 | XP: 4 | HP: 17/27 | Gambit 0 | Armor 1 | 1d10 | STR +1 | DEX +1 | CON +2 | INT 0 | WIS -1 | CHA +2

So guys, I have enough Xp to level, and I kinda want some input, because there are a few moves I am considering. for ones specific to my playbook, I'll post their text as well

Alone Against The World (CON)
When you stand alone against an approaching major threat, roll +CON.
On a 10+, after a glorious stand off, you drive the threat back, taking some damage.
On a 7-9, after a grueling struggle, you drive the threat back, but you suffer a permanent scar (physical, mental, or emotional), describe it.
On a 6-, roll your Last Breath - after a desperate attempt, you have failed.

You're Already Dead
When you would deal your damage, you may choose not to roll damage
and instead gain 1-Fate. You can spend all held Fate at any time to deal
your damage that many times to one enemy you gained Fate from, dealing
the total damage as a single hit. You can discard held Fate at any time,
should you choose to spare them.

Arcane art On the condition that Snark be counted as a performance. This would be me supporting the team through witticism, and good-hearted ribbing

Channeling this one would take some set-up, but could be pretty fun

Connections: Because of my criminal past, and out general need of guys who know guys.

Alone Against The World seems the one to see the most usage. I think You're Already Dead would get frustrating, since most things that we fight we want dead ASAP. =)

I decided to ditch the PC voting part and revert to "if GM is impressed earn XP." I expect XP rate to incease but I don't think that's a bad thing.

End of Session:

Alignment:
Use machines, perhaps, but punish disruptive elements, I'm not sure.

Bonds:
Finally cashing in Pops' Bond, as well as Jamee's to fit Sona's new prerogative.
Pops is broken in ways I can't fix. Time to bring him back to Mother. (+1 XP)
If he's not the one, he'll have to do anyway. I must bring Jamee back to Mother. (+1 XP)

As Promised: That Retzack luxuriates in his own filthy acts, 1 don't know what 1 saw in that scruffy-looking nerf herder. (+1 XP)

Finally, just adding a Bond for Dexter: Mr. Hyde has to learn that taking a hit is not, itself, a solution.

Party questions
Foe: the Heirophant
Lore: members of AoS can and will attempt a TPKO. Also, they have targeted countermeasures for magical abilities, and someone suspected they would encounter us.
Loot: an excuse to smuggle BunkR BustR into Theta HQ and heal/destroy the shardminds that rule Thetakind? I don't think we got this one this time (yet).

5+4 = 9/13 XP

Since we are at EoS, would ya'll like to try out flags instead of bonds?

http://walkingmind.evilhat.com/2015/09/07/from-bonds-to-flags/

The side effect is that Aid/Interfere changes from +BONDS to +STAT.

I would be game.

my flag might be Self-destructive "Heroism"- Call me on my reckless behavior

or maybe Shameful past -Press me for details about my life

what stat would aid become? I vote CHA

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

I think the stat would depend on how you are trying to aid.

Android Engine of Destruction | Lvl 6 | XP: 10 | HP: 14/27 | Armor 4 | 1d10 | STR +3 | DEX +1 | CON +2 | INT 0 | WIS 0 | CHA -1 | Blood: 4

I'd say default would be the same stat as the original roll, but can be justified for any stat.

For flags I would probably take "Violent tendencies - Exarcerbate my addiction" and "Pathetic mongrel - Manipulate me with kindness

A Thin Veneer of Professionalism- Make it hard for me to excuse your illegal actions.

or possibly

A Bronze-winged Angel- Give me something to punish.

Or if I want to be less cheesy

How many Flags do we get? Same as number of bonds?

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

The only real difficulty is tracking other people's flags. I think that suggestion to take one flag per allowable bond on your sheet works fine.

I'll collect everyone's flags into a single document and link it in my quick bar.

One criticism of flags that I have read is that they are static. At each of end of session you may rewrite up to two flags.

Male Human Survivor | Lvl 4 | XP: 4 | HP: 17/27 | Gambit 0 | Armor 1 | 1d10 | STR +1 | DEX +1 | CON +2 | INT 0 | WIS -1 | CHA +2

okay, so my flags are... probably:

Self-destructive "Heroism"- Call me on my reckless behavior.

Shameful past -Press me for details about my life.

Flippant- Rise to one of my comments.

Lonely- Offer me conditional acceptance

do we get xp for each of these that are pressed?

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

"OPTIONAL RULE: You can actually get more generous with the XP for flags, and give them to both players. This even allows multiple players to get in on the act, so if the ranger hits the Paladin’s flag later in the session, at session end, the thief, ranger and paladin all get one XP (Paladin still gets only 1 – it only matters that it came up, not how often it came up)."

Let's go with that. So, if one of your flags is triggered, then you get 1 XP. For each other player you trigger you get 1 XP. So if your flag is triggered and you trigger a flag from each other player you get max 5 XP.

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

Alright, flags only really work if we have a central place where everyone can see them.

I've put a link to "Sheets" in my Useful Links. Go ahead and add in your flags (line 33) when you have them finalized.

Hee. Okay now I feel comfortable doing some EoS. =)

And yeah, Dexter, that trade sounds totally doable...as soon as I learn if I can get blood from all those fluffy, doe-eyed innocent animals/semi-intelligent fey-folk that impale thyselves on that wonderful unnecessarily cruel device. ^_^

1) Bonds
I respect Rotgut's culture, and sense of taste. I must assist in this.
Well, I guess I write this off.
I'm Adding: Dexter is a man of resources. I should learn more about him.
2) Foe: Melphits. I killed someone who had many many tricks up his sleeve designed to kill me.
3) Lore: There are intelligent robots out there! Honest to goodness intelligent robots - still exist. I didn't know that before, thought they were myth. Intelligent robots! Also, though I fear no cold, I fear the coldness of space.
4) Alignment. I don't...I don't think I can really claim that one right now.
5) Loot. Yeppers.

+4 total.

McKhaos, would you allow me to take the "Gambit" move (not gonna post the text, I think you're familiar with it), and theme it all as pure, dumb luck (Such as, in my defunct post, adding 1 to my initial labyrinth roll by saying that "And by chance, the guard he walked into was high off his ass, and would have believed him had he said a unicorn had sent him")

on an unrelated note, can we level up during an end-of-session?

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

Yes you can level. And you can definitely use your worldly move to take Gambit. We will need to tweak it since we are not using bonds. Just act like you have a bond with every other player.

Necromancer. Vampire.

After finding a memorable treasure and leveling up, I take the move Lord of the Dead, which allows me to cast Animate Dead (cleric spell) at the cost of 1 blood. I roll d4+1 to see how many traits I get.

That help? =)

As far as flags go, I'll blatantly steal two of Dexter's, and add two of my own.

So for me I'll have:
Shameful past -Press me for details about my life

Lonely- Offer me conditional acceptance

and also:

Megalomaniac: A little flattery will convince me of your excellent taste. Or, if flags need conflict: Call me out that the action I'm doing/plan I'm suggesting is geared more toward inflating my ego than accomplishing the task with greatest efficiency.

Priority over Loyalty: Question whether I really care about anything...or anybody.

Um....how's that? =)

So I have no idea what time zone you are all in but ...

If you'd like to participate in a live game with me I will be running a playtest of my Star Trek hack from 11pm-1am PST this Friday (tomorrow). That's 2am-4am EST.

So if any of you happen to live in Europe and want to play in a game Saturday morning, let me know.

I've said this in other threads that I know you see, MCKhaos, but what I said there applies to this game too. I feel badly that I've been so quiet this past week. I'll be back soon, promise.

I'll attempt to Make It So on a live game in that time frame but I am not optimistic. Don't worry about posting frequency ... I certainly currently live in a glass house in the area of posting frequency!

Side note, if any of ya'll would like to run a blind playtest of Space Trip for me, that would be ... like pretty cool man. I've recently made it a bit more generic so that it should work with any episodic starship-based sci fi show (Star Trek, Star Wars Rebels, Firefly, Farscape, BSG, Red Dwarf, etc.). It was birthed in Star Trek, but I'm converting my Star Wars PbP from FFG over to Space Trip, so hopefully the system can handle all the different tropes.

Here's the current 5-page playable Alpha v0.4.
