Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

We all have our reasons, Captain... for each and every thing we do. After a long drawn out battle in the swamp, with an undead druid in a sinking temple I was remind of my mortality.

Just thought you should have a place to start, should I die. But specifically, maybe it was the bloated hanging dead body. Re provisioning or some task she remembered needed doing. Maybe she doesn't like Boneduce or Chambers.

Sorrin seems to remember something.

"How do you know that? You sent Jin didn't you? Why me specifically?" Chell looks at the two nervously as she backs away a step. She seems to become smaller, more defensive, ready to bolt at a moment's notice. Was this a trap? It would be perfect for her? And Zalen hadn't been seen since lunch. What was going on?

The Sense Motive from earlier was to see if there was any ill intent in the matron or if she was lying. It seems out of place for the matron to instantly fear lycanthropy. She figured the Commandant would want to keep that hush hush.

Jard... Rest in Peace. Sorrin asks Roland to look into any surviving family.

Seems we've been running into some of your old crew, Captain. Belok, Xander... Chambers. Small world.

Evil GM

Chell

Neither Jin nor the matron have any ill conceived notions towards you. Clearly the young cleric has spent a tumultuous week, or so, in this cesspool of a hive, making her skid-dish and wary.

Jin responds, "the boys were bitten, the matron cared for them, which is what she was doing when I arrived to leave my previous nights earnings. I then sought out Belok, a cleric of Bowbe, who told me about you." He smiles. "Nothing more, nothing less. We are thankful for your help." He looks back towards the room. "Can I walk you back to your destination and will you be back tomorrow to check on them?" The champion asks. He then escorts her back to where she wants to rest.

Chell:

Your suspicions about the disease and afflictions appear to have a solid foundation. I know you wanted to walk the docks finding others but I'd like to either hand wave that or pick it up another morning. As I want to get everyone regrouped and back on the same game time.

Of course people fear lycanthropy.

Yeah but it seemed odd that was the first thing they worried about. Seemed unlikely unless she was a better healer than most or rumors were getting around about the were-shark dude from Thumb's Reach. Figured Bonaduce would keep that quite to prevent panic.

Chell releases the tension in her body and sags against the wall. She was being far too jumpy and untrusting. Legitimately so but who knew it could be so tiring. "Sorry. The last few days have been...anyway." She waves her hand in the air as if to say it is unimportant. "To answer questions. Yes I think I did. And no, they shouldn't. But even if they did they wouldn't be monsters." she says, her voice taking a slightly harder edge. "They are still children no matter the form. Its a curse. One that can be removed or at least mitigated. Silvered cuffs and secure room one night a month."

She moves away form the wall and places a gentle hand on Jin's arm. "Its good you asked for help." Then she looks back the woman. "Three days is the window we have after a bite. After that, I am pretty sure there is no one in Port Shaw that can remove it. Not even Belok. We would need a healer of tremendous strength or a scroll prepared by one. Keep the children away from the water for now. If this happens again go to the Chapterhouse and ask for a poultice of Wolfsbane. They have a good stock of them and know how to prepare it. I'll be back sometime tomorrow to make sure it worked."

Back to Jin she says. "I wouldn't mind an escort to the Green Dragon but more than that, I could use one tomorrow morning. I need to walk the docks and make sure this isn't bigger than two orphan boys."

Evil GM

At first light and after Chell's prayers everyone gathers back at their new ship: Baron of the Tides. All the crew, except for Jenkie has made it to the new ship for morning news.

Evil GM

Chell:

Jin obliges and early the next morning before sunrise walks with you on the docks. Your detect disease shows that there are many...you count over a dozen dockworkers who have diseases.

As you walk the docks there is scuttle about an assassination attempt on the crew of the Dragon's Tail. some are calling it Bonegnaw's revenge other mention it was common thuggery and everything in between. Rumor is some giant half-orc killed a dozen thugs himself.

Astrianna chuckles at Bri. "Oh yes, it's physically demanding, for certain..."

The bard walks aboard the Baron and smiles at the beautiful darkwood ship. "I still think we should rename it. Something classy..." She remarks to Bri.

She meets with the others on deck. "Great work Sorrin, I'm impressed you were able to move all the crew over to here last night. Though I don't see Jenkie... Hm. Did you get all the supplies transferred? We have a slip to tie off at near Barret's Barnacle for the next three days, then I'm going to try and get us a better spot."

Eager to tour the vessel and see her off on its first small voyage, she glances around at the rigging, brow furrowing. "Is... that a hole in the mainsail?"

Honestly, I've been focused on the work... You'd have to ask Ptahh about the assassins and the crew about Jenkie's last whereabouts.

Need to find Jenkie and get some sleep. I'm exhausted, both physically and mentally.

Did Sorrin get 8 hours? Didn't seem like it.

Bri sighs and looks about her after boarding the Baron and then lets out a shrill whistle to get the attention of anyone on deck and then asks them. "Anyone know what Jenkie was out doing last night or why he might not be back yet? Was he getting goods for the ship, visiting a female friend or what?"

Evil GM

Chell:

After 3 Rd of concentration you know what the disease is. Unlike detect magic which requires a spellcraft check, detect disease does not indicate a secondary skill check.

You'd see quite a few STDs and other health issues like scurry but there are at least 6 lycanthropy cases all in the incubation period.

I want to move this forward and reunite the group, so I'll tell you that only one is still inside the 3 day window where wolfsbane could be useful. You also sense that if you inquire or confront those who have been bitten you very likely will cause a wide spread panic.

No to the 8 hours sleep question. That goes for Astri too. Bri doesn't require as much rest and it's a new day so her spells are replenished.

the crew replies to Embrianna, "Dunno where Jenkie's at he was looking to go to the Skull."

Bri and Astri make a sense motive check.

Both of you see a flatboard with a covered body on it laying midship by starboard side.

Astrianna whirls around when Sorrin says a crewmember was killed last night. "What? Assassins?" She puts her hand on her forehead and sighs. It looks like we've made some enemies. S!~@. This demands retribution... Her eyes settle on the flatboard with the body. We'll need to find and compensate their next of kin.

She puts her hands on her hips, her face darkened. "This is unacceptable. We'll kill their damn goons three times over for the one of ours they took." I thought we would be able to stay ahead of the maelstrom but it appears the machinations of Shaw have caught up to us. I underestimated their propensity for murder... and it cost us one of our own. We need to teach them we're not to be messed with.

On Bri's signal Astrianna looks at the crew to see if anyone comes forward with information.

Astri' SM:
You sense those crew members that survived the previous night's battle and transfer are looking at you and Bri differently. A few snicker amongst themselves when you board the ship.

"Let's not start a panic about emotional responses to payback." He looks at Astri.

"As for Jenkie, he could be on the Vintage, or a myriad of other places. If he's not back by noon, I'll disembark and look for him."

He looks wearily at group, especially the two women. "You own a fine ship and this crew depends on you. There's a man dead out there on your deck...pay him respect. This transfer did not go as smoothly as it should have being short handed and without healing." He glares. He hesitates a moment then continues. "You need more crew you are down to 21 men...most unskilled. This ship will take at least 27 to sail effectively but you need more than the minimum. Mend that hole in the mainsail which the men are working on and get supplies, it's a lot to do."

Six?! Uh oh. Chell makes a mental note of each man or woman she saw that was cursed, either committing the face to memory or asking someone nearby what their name was. When the spell fades and she has six faces burned into her mind she is both scared and determined to not let this get out of control. Grabbing people or telling them would only cause panic. Better to contain this.

She thanks Jin for his help and frees him of his duty to her when they reach the Baron. She lets him know the situation and asks him to keep an ear out for people recently bit. Chell boards the new ship without any preamble or protocol, giving any guards a look that dared them to question her reason for being there. She doesn't even ask permission to come aboard. They didn't have time for it. Only one case could be taken care of, the rest...

She stops, staring at the body. "Assassins? What about...no nevermind. We have something more important to consider." She looks around at all the crew decides it best not to tell everyone yet. "Sorry for the breach in protocol but I've had a hell of a night and gotten some bad news." She looks at the body again. "Worse news. All the officers in the captain's cabin now," she says with as much authority as she can muster. She hopes that will be hint enough for Astrianna, Embrianna, Sorrin, Donovan and maybe Rowland to gather. If the new guy came that was fine to. The others seemed to have accepted him easily enough. Where was Jenkie?

Huh, well, with that mood she sure didn't get herself any. Wonder what's up...

She almost starts in about how Jard's death has nothing to do with Astri and Embri. I told Sorrin to wait until tomorrow. I told him! Why would anyone move supplies in the middle of the night in the Tide distrct? But she isn't looking to cause a scene, so she says nothing about the matter. Why does Chell get a free pass? She ran off and completely lied about it. Did she have a tumble with Jin...? No... no, that's crazy.

The bard pinches the bridge of her nose and massages it. "I will deliver compensation to Jard's next of kin myself, and work on getting more crew. Also, myself, Embri, Sorrin, Ptah, and Chell all have a job to prepare for tonight. As you said Captain, there is a lot to do."

Astrianna frowns at Chell. "... now, Chell? ...All right, all right."

The Captain moves to the main officer bunk area with the others. Before Chell begins to speak, the Captain beats her to the punch.

With a deadpan fan face he replies to Astri outside the hearing of the crew."With all due respect paying compensation is only part of the solution. If you choose to ignore the crew and not speak to them and pay your visual respects to the fallen, you won't have a crew in the morning. You'll be the laughing stock of the port as you'll be able to hire zero trustworthy crew members. Do you know what it's like to set sail with unrest onboard, how about a mutiny when on at sea."

Speaking bluntly, "Your flippant attitude is your Achilles heal."

Without missing a beat the Captain responds to Bri, "Depends on what you mean to do at sea. There are natural loses like men blown over or diseased, then there are casualties from combat. You need extra hands to work shifts and to board other ships and crew other ships if you are privateer. 33...maybe 50 depends."

He looks at Chell before she speaks, "You could have been helpful last night." His tone hints at a reprimand.

I had a simple life, I enjoyed drinking...I truly did and the tours on the Vintage got Jenkie and me by. I don't think I'm cut out for this anymore.

Chell goes one step further singling out the first one to comment about the death. "Cut the chatter. I am sorry for the death while I was away, truly I am, I'll do the preparations myself in due time. But something of grave importance came up last night that needs immediate attention. Something that concerns all of us. As soon as I have discussed options, I will ask for your input." Then she gets up in his face. She is not tall but she projects as much power and authority as she can to make up for it. "Not. Before. Understood?" She doesn't bother waiting for an answer before turning on her heel and walking into the cabin. In her mind they had hit worst case scenario and only quick decisive action could save lives.

--in the cabin

In the cabin she paces back and forth, muttering to herself. "Such a fool. How did I not see this? It all makes since. Blood-washed Kiss. Night of Holy Terror. Should have listened to Grymmar." She goes on for a minute or two before taking a deep breath and explaining. "I am sorry captain. I know I could have helped last night but something unexpected acme up. Jin approached me about two boys that had been bitten by sharks and in need of a better healer than the matron of the orphanage. Of course I couldn't say no. Its my duty and privilege to lend aid where I can. But that isn't the only reason."

She places both hands on the table in the cabin and looks down at it, whole body tense. "Lester mentioned last night that there was an unusually large number of sharks in the port and a lot of bites but I guess few deaths. No general call to stay out of the water. Even after going to that temple in the swamp I nearly forgot how formidable an enemy Dajobas could be and almost all but forgot Grymmar's words. I followed Jin back to the orphanage and looked over the children myself. They both had lycanthropy."

Once the news settles in she continues. "I think I got there quick enough and need to check on them later today but as a precaution I prepared Detect Disease this morning. I walked the docks with Jin, scanning anyone in range." She looks up and into the eye of everyone present. "In a mere hour and in one section of the wharf I counted six infected. 5 of them are beyond the help of anyone in port to my knowledge."

And bomb goes the Dynamite.

"I can't begin to describe how bad this is. If we don't do something now Grymmar's words are going to come true. The next full moon will be an Unholy Night of Terror. Were-people can't control themselves or the change. They will all transform and attack anything in sight. Just one uncontained transformation could cause a panic. I don't know how many are out there but I believe its more than just those 6. Much more. And I don't think there is anyone strong enough to remove the curse in Port Shaw. But that's the point. Remove those that could stop it, Archibald and Jalamar, infect a few dozen people then let the whole town tear itself apart. Even worse, an acolyte at the Chapterhouse said no one has seen Zalen since lunch yesterday. I haven't checked in today but I intend to soon. Someone needs to organize the clerics to search for infected and make a cure. The commandant needs to be warned."

You paint a rather grim picture, but eventually the morning star rises... And so, I have come to never accept defeat of body or spirit. There must be a way... perhaps one unknown in your circles.

The Tulita may have shamans or priests of the power required. And they have known of and dealt with Dajobas longer than non-indigenous people. Perhaps that old Tulita man wasn't threatening, but rather... warning.

I was being serious, that Tulita spiritual leader, Nakuaka... The one addicted to drugs, lost in dragonsmoke. Remember, he came up in our meeting with the warriors. Stopping Bonehead... He looks over to the captain.

It was supposed to stem the flow of drugs and help the people ween him off his addiction. We should go back before the full moon... obviously.

I'm sure the Tulita among the crew would know of him, possible some of the things he's known to have done. Not precise, but would be an indicator of his... power.

Also, please keep on mind. The Dragoons outwardly disparaged Bonegnaw, but never seemed to have the time or resources to bring him in... The Tulita, Mokoli Ali'i indicated this.

I'd be careful who we tell about suspicions or our plans to stop "something". Compartmentalize. Dragoons can't help you with this, worse they could be contributing to the problem. And, just because we can't see how... doesn't mean they're not.

I'm sort of watching the reactions. Several people mentioned limited posting over the next couple days.

"The Vintage is down somewhat by the Barnacle. Good idea about sailing near to check on Jenkie." He frowns a bit. "Before I forget there are not rowboats or tenders onboard...something to put on that shopping list."

Astrianna is taken aback by the sudden lecture. With anyone else she would be immediately furious, but she respected the Captain, and his deadpan voice meant there was no malice or personal attack against her. It was just facts coming from an experienced sailor.

It seems as if her hackles were raised by his comments, but it deflates as he expands on the lack of respect from crew and the possibility of mutiny. She looks to the side and then down, clearly trying to come up with some argument to counter his notions, but by the time she had formulated some words the moment was gone and he was addressing Embrianna. Her tight-lipped face was all that remained of the encounter.
Is... he right? Would they all laugh at me? I don't interfere with the crew's lives, I let them do as they please and expect them to take care of themselves and run the ship in return. Is that wrong? The death of the marine last night was not my fault, I'm certain, but... I'm supposed to do what? Honor their death in this service, at least? I look out for my team, but I didn't look out for my crew, is that the problem? Are they even my crew? I co-own the ship, I suppose...

Her eyebrows raise as Chell continues to ramble about something that she had not been paying attention to, finally coming back to Golarion around the time Chell is speaking to Lester. Cupping her chin in her hands, she listens to the rest of the speech.

At the end Astrianna bites her lip and begins to process the situation. "Lycanthropy? In two children bitten by normal sharks? I would say it preposterous that normal sharks could spread the curse, but... you saw it yourself. The question is what to do about it?"

She thinks of the possible options. "If we inform the Commandant, what would he do? Let's put ourselves in his boots for a moment. Boneduece strikes me as someone that puts the greater good above the needs of the few. If you told him there was the potential of a massive wereshark outbreak and Shaw would be awash with blood, and there were no priests with the power to cure the curse in Shaw..."

The half-elf blows air from between her lips and shrugs. "What choice would he have to help the city other than sending out his Dragoons with Detect Disease scrolls or wands, finding those infected with the Kiss, rounding them up and culling them? What other option does he have to prevent the outbreak but removing the threat before it emerges?" Astrianna spreads her hands wide. "If you want to save the people... and not just the city... I would not tell the Commandant about this unless you have an immediate solution that can save the people that the Dragoons can help with."

She sighs at Sorrin. "Why do you think the dragoons would want a city full of weresharks? That's absurd. On the other note, you are right... The Tultia may be able to help, it's true... The Elder Nakuaka may be able to help or point us in the right direction. Perhaps there is a source to the sharks themselves? All these sharks have to be coming from somewhere, making them carry this curse."

So when is the Full Moon?

Chell holds her chin in her hand, thinking hard. Her eyes dart back and forth as if looking for an answer in the grain of the table. When she speaks she does so slowly, as if the words go through a rigorous filter before she says anything. "Its a delicate situation to be sure. And if I went straight to the Commandant that is likely what he would do. It would cause no small amount of panic throughout the city but considering the situation he might take that option. I have another but I doubt he would do it as I intend."

She looks up as she pleads her argument. " It would be easy enough to find those infected. The spell to find it is low and if I can get a few wands it would only take a few days. We could hide the scan as part of a census or something, make sure we got most of them. I honestly doubt we'd get them all anyway. Once located we set up a system where each month on the full moon they go to the prison, I know, but its the only option I can think of. Silvered cuffs and sturdy bars would keep them safe from the people and themselves. Give them a little food and they should be fine for the night. In the morning they can be released. But I am more realistic than that. He won't do it my way. I don't trust him or the Dragoons to handle this."

She then begins pacing, analyzing more options. "And while the Tulita might be able to help, would they, considering all that has happened to them? It's worth it to ask, I know, but I am not convinced. Also, if they become more active in the city people are going to get suspicious. They are going to get scared and that might mean some fighting or worse. And I doubt Hargrove would have any of that."

She paces to back to the table, opens her mouth several times to speak but can't seem to formulate the right words. Her old self is starting to assert dominance, which is ironic because her old self is shy, quiet, and unsure. Before it takes control she says her piece. "I think...the first thing to do is find out what happened to Zalen. If he is there we can ask for advice and let him organize the Order. I noticed they had stockpiled Wolfsbane. He might have known this was coming. If not, I think we are going to need him for the above reasons. I think we should see the Tulita after that. We I have no idea what they will say so we can cross that bridge when we get to it. And I think we should tell the Commandant something. An anonymous tip, a letter, someone he trusts to warn of coming turmoil, something. I wouldn't feel comfortable letting him or the Dragoons get blind-sided by this. There is still good in that organization somewhere. I hope."

Why must there always be insults? Sorrin was just trying to purpose alternate theories and caution.

Sorrin turns cold. Absurd... the only thing absurd is your narrowness of thinking for someone so "worldly". If you can't imagine it, then it cannot be so?

The Dragoons are comprised of individuals, some are strong willed and driven, others take orders from elsewhere. Hargrove, Chambers, Hammerhead... his name escapes me. They are their ring marks, they've been associated with the disposal of bodies at least by proximity, possibly those of missing high ranking clergy, they stifle Tulita.

Taking a deep breath, The only conscionable and decent men among them are forced out or sent away. Lawrence, Perrin.

Absurd. I'm imagining things. How powerful is Belok, can he help... or even this Lester? What if the Jawbone is not just scrimshaw artwork? But, an artifact of some kind with the power to end this if in the right hand.

He thinks about stopping.

The world is full of wonder, my mother would say. Just open your eyes and look.

The Whale, Dolphin, Turtle... are they defenders against the Shark? The indigenous mythos should be considered, and not dismissed. Before or after other options as you decide, Chell.

I plan on seeing this Port Shaw matter through, before returning home. The encroaching sharks, the Tulita oppression and the corruption that runs rampant.

Taking a more relaxed stance, his mind races... Conquering, oppressing and discarding the native people, laws and gods of the land. That's how we got here. Why did the Elves leave?

That's fine. One less thing you have to buy.

earlier reference to moon phase
* Near Waxing Gibbous

Moon Phases:
There is approximately 29.5 days in a lunar cycle.
There are 4 main phases: New moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, Third quarter. There is slightly over 7 days between phase.

The moon is either Waxing (showing more illumination from your line of sight] or Waning (showing less illumination from your line of sight). The period known as Waxing Gibbous is between the First Quarter and Full Moon. So near Waxing Gibbous makes it 5 days from full moon.

Moon Phases Detailed:

It's probably easiest to understand the moon cycle in this order: new moon and full moon, first quarter and third quarter, and the phases in between.

The new moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and sun. The three objects are in approximate alignment. The entire illuminated portion of the moon is on the back side of the moon, the half that we cannot see.

At a full moon, the earth, moon, and sun are in approximate alignment, just as the new moon, but the moon is on the opposite side of the earth, so the entire sunlit part of the moon is facing us. The shadowed portion is entirely hidden from view.

The first quarter and third quarter moons (both often called a "half moon"), happen when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. So we are seeing exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow.

Once you understand those four key moon phases, the phases between should be fairly easy to visualize, as the illuminated portion gradually transitions between them.

An easy way to remember and understand those "between" lunar phase names is by breaking out and defining 4 words: crescent, gibbous, waxing, and waning. The word crescent refers to the phases where the moon is less than half illuminated. The word gibbous refers to phases where the moon is more than half illuminated. Waxing essentially means "growing" or expanding in illumination, and waning means "shrinking" or decreasing in illumination.

Thus you can simply combine the two words to create the phase name, as follows:

After the new moon, the sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half, so it is waxing crescent. After the first quarter, the sunlit portion is still increasing, but now it is more than half, so it is waxing gibbous. After the full moon (maximum illumination), the light continually decreases. So the waning gibbous phase occurs next. Following the third quarter is the waning crescent, which wanes until the light is completely gone -- a new moon.

The Captain listens to the owners discuss the ins and outs of the community situation, his hands folded neatly across his lap. He then focuses on the more immediate problem for ship. "What do you intend to do with the marine Jard's body? He was proud. Do you intend to give him a burial at sea? If so, may I suggest we take the ship farther out of the bay beyond the shark infestation?" He notices the concern on faces, especially the priestess at the thought of leaving port for day.

Sorrin speaks solemnly. How would he have wanted to be buried, what were his beliefs? Maybe someone on the ship knows... ashamed that I don't. Maybe he wore a charm or pendant that indicated such.

Men... people are more loyal when they can trust you genuinely respect their ways.

As Ptahh takes in the news brought to the group by Chell, he considers his place for a moment. Weresharks... Missing clergymen... Corrupt guards... Sounds like time to leave. Why should I risk my neck for this town? I've been here less than a day, and I'm suppose to risk life and limb for them? We should pack up and leave... or at least I should. There are plenty of ports to find work. I could live a long life... make my fortune.... And die peacefully in the arms of a wench many years from now... And when I face Gorum in his victory halls, what will he say... That I ran... With fear... Grrrrr."

"I agree with the Priestess," he glances at Chell momentarily but subverts his eyes as she meets his gaze. "Something must be done to confront whatever evil has infected this port." Again he looks toward Chell. Gah... her heart is pure. Where is this soft spot in mine coming from? "I do not know where to turn or what to do, but I will follow her and you," he looks towards the others. "it is the right thing to do... and the glorious thing!"

"And about last night, the assassins were after me. The crew of my last ship were a murderous lot. A blade in the Captain's back showed their cowardice. When I exposed the fiend, the crew did not care. I'm afraid that I didn't anticipate that they would come after me when I left. Jard's family is my responsibility. No one else's!. Now, what do we do about the Sharks?"
