Niiiiice. Fakey's over there with video. That slime looks like the gobs of crap that's been coming out of my nose for a week.

I'm starting to wonder if I can hang with this group. On most days, I can't post during the day (6a-4p CST US), and whole conversations and stuff are happening before I get a chance to weigh in.
I realize that Larken hasn't meshed well with the group, so his input is hit-or-miss anyway, but I just can't put out the volume the rest of you can during the day.
Add to that the fact that the time when I can post all day (weekends) seems to be a no-go for most of the group.
Sorry... just grumping. Maybe I don't understand the mechanics of PbP very well.

I usually manage to get a bit of crossover with some of the group, but I’m lucky if I get much with Aubrey – and there’s usually a reasonable amount of posting happening when I’m off-line … Weekends are pretty much out for me, but some weekends a fair amount of posting happens, and I usually have to play catch up for those.

It can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when something happens that would have been really good or fitting for your character to respond to, but things have kind of moved on by the time you get to see it. I think it’s just the nature of pbp play though … I suppose you could try to apply a greater structure to it, but I tend to think that would hamper creativity and slow the game dramatically. I find that to make it works there needs to be a degree of ‘post-‘ and ‘pre-‘ interaction; “In response to so-and-so’s earlier post” and “typically in this situation my character is going to react like this…”

For me at the moment, my real life group gets together for a game only once a month or so (which is far less gaming than I like) so pbp games are giving me my gaming “fix”. I prefer things to move along reasonably quickly, but understand that it’s not always possible. I also find that I have to adjust my style of play quite a lot – group dynamics and inter-group roleplaying can be a bit skewed and stilted, seeing as we’re not all there face to face (or even online at the same time); proper planning and tactics, and trying to come to a group consensus can really slow the game; ‘loner’ or ‘quiet’ characters can risk being particularly isolated, even more so than in a face to face game – because at least in those games you are physically present at the table, and can make your presence known in other ways than your character talking.

Anyway, despite the occasional frustrations, and the fact that it won’t replace the need for face to face gaming for me, I’ve been really getting into it over the past few months.

We'll figure something out, bro. I mean, we play with one man in England, one man in Greece, and one man in Australia; I guess the b##&$ for you is that by 4 or 5 central Aubrey's at 10 or 11 p.m. and about to lie down.

Aub's here some during the weekends, though; if you check it out between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (central) he'll probably have something to say during those times.
I also notice Larken likes to bop off on his own a bit, so maybe you guys could hook that up?

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think the problem isn't the regularity of posting, so much as that the group split up a lot (with Larken going off on his own) so we went to spoilers, most of which Larken wasn't able to read. I know you have commented on spoilers in the past, and I prefer to use them. I have a bit of a fetish about seeing how the message gets twisted when retold by others, truth be told, and it can be very effective for building up tension in certain situations.

However, with a group this large, people wandering off alone could impact upon the gaming experience because they get to participate less. I don't mind PCs splitting into groups, especially if they are dividing the "detective" tasks up. However, for the best PbP gaming experience, wandering off alone probably isn't a great idea, especially if it means nothing interesting happens to you while the plot hooks are being doled out elsewhere.

I appreciate that Larken is a bit of a loner character. However, I would suggest that he sticks around with the other characters so he is around when plot developments happen. He can be a loner, just, y'know, not alone.

I cross over with Mothman for maybe an hour a day if I can post just after getting up in the morning, but by 9.00am my time he is gone. The guys in the US I cross over with a bit more, both in the morning (if they are having a late one, esp. Vatters and Fatey) and in the afternoon and evening, but it depends on time zone and work schedules too to some extent. If you are enjoying the game, I'm not bothered provided you can post at some point during the day.

People tend to have distinctive schedules as to when they are likely to be around. These develop over time, and you (as player or DM) can then take account and expect people to show. Once we become aware of yours (which, because you don't post a great deal, isn't that obvious to me at the moment) the flow of the game will become better. For example, in combat, I know when the guys are likey to post or not post in the Eberron game, so I try to get to a stage in the initiative order to minimise big gaps in posting as much as I can (or they use those dreaded spoilers to say what they want to do if they are likely to be off-line when their turn comes up). Also, some guys are on at the same time, so they tend to interact more. Frankly, you should have much less problem than me, since you are on in US time along with five of the other players. I suggest you go with the flow, have Larken hang out with the PCs more, and see if it is or is not working for you in a few weeks.

Anyway, Larken has to stick around. He will become quite pivotal. Heh heh heh....

For Gurney, I assumed a guard dog was trained with the "guard" skill set of attack defend down and stay.

I wasn't sure bull rush was right, but it was meant to be run at, jump on, and bring down. Basically a brute force trip, rather than a finesse trip. My untrained dog does it to every visitor to my house... of course then she propmtly searches every crevice of their body for crumbs

and not to rewind combat further, but both gurney and Lo'j provoked AoO from the bull rushes

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

Yeah, I hear what you are saying, but I don't suppose your dog does that on command. I have no issue with Gurney performing bull rushes, just with the notion he can perform sophisticated tactics on command with minimal training. The rules have the notion of Tricks but my gut feel is that performing tactics at such a high, even intelligent level is slightly beyond the normal combat training as set out in the basic tricks. This shouldn't be a problem once you take the Companion feat for Gurney - but it is also the reason why it will be useful since you will get more tricks out of him (I assume - I haven't looked at the feat description as I write this) and we can invent tricks (Advanced Comabt training, or something) to cover these eventualities.

Oh, and no AoO - the gobbos are flat-footed. I rolled their attacks before I remembered.

Hey, Ithuriel, how is Greece going?

Grand Lodge

Pretty well. I'm taking Greek classes and so far I'm useless, but it's coming together. I'm starting to recognize many more words when television or movies are subtitled and yesterday I was happy to find I could read significant portions of a menu.

My visa extension is being signed off on by whoever does that this week- so I'll be officially able to stay for a while. I rode around Athens with someone else on a Vespa the other day so I guess that gets me greek points right? We were looking for potential storefronts for an upscale bakery/cafe/sandwich shop. Greece is far less cosmopolitan than I ever would have known. I had assumed that as part of Europe at least culinary-wise you could find a bit of everything. Not so. Most non-greek food places here are pretty bad. Anyway in ny I was working for the place that does bread and such for MOMA, the Met opera, the United Nations, etc so there is an opportunity to fill a void here. And if I end up working stupid hours to do that here people are surprisingly out much later than in ny. There are places in my neighborhood (a college & anarchist area granted) that are sometimes still full after sunrise.

One thing that still cracks me up about Greek men is their love of designer fannypacks. It's so ridiculous- I love it.

If i get some decent photos taken I'll put them on that photobucket account.

ok, well away from blowing anymore fun from the game, if there are anymore games you are running, put me down for one, i would like to try this.
and is everyone really that big on the surpise, like as a player, i could know the whole plot of an adventure, but as a pc, i could not tell you anything but what was in my mug at that time.
How do you feel about that, do you mind Players knowing what you are doing, letting them still have to play it out in the pc,
or do you hide everylast thing you can cover, so there is no way they can get ahead of you.

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

When a game is plot-driven (like this is) then I keep the details of the plot hidden. This works particularly well with a PbP because, of course, no one can physically see you and you don't need to be spontaneous. With these players they could probably know about the plot and play along convincingly, but for a better gaming experience they are choosing not to read the adventure in advance. Discovering the plot twists by playing through them is much better fun than reading about them and then pretending you don't know.

Would I allow a player who had read the adventure already? Probably, if they could keep their mouth shut. But I would question whether it really would be that much fun for them. And they will know stuff and unconsciously make decisions based on that knowledge, even if they didn't mean to. Or go the other way and make suboptimal decisions deliberately. So I don't think it would be much fun or a very satisfactory situation. That said, I probably won't run a published adventure as my next PbP anyway. And if you would like in on that, watch the Gamer Connection thread (but it ain't imminent!).

Dragonmann, you have been a bit inactive lately (both in my games and the ones you are running). I know you have a new job which is affecting your posting schedule, but while we wait for you this holds things up a bit. Is this situation likely to persist, and is there anything that can be done about it?

I am working on the situation. It should be getting improved now that I actually have my permanent computer at work, which is a laptop, so it should migrate better to home and back.

I am also taking a hard look to see if I am stretched to thin (i am) and where I am going to have to make cuts. I will deffinetly keep stormreach running, and will stick with Trose. Given the overcrowding in RotRL, Lo'j may have to start being more fool hardy, and get himself dead.

Grand Lodge

...or become more of an official deputy and stay on as an npc who could easily join up with the group again when/if you wanted to.

Uhh oh. I'm going to have to come up with those diplomacy ranks I don't have a lot faster if Lo'j takes a break.

The Exchange

It would be a shame to lose you, as you add a lot to the game. See how things develop.

If Lo'j does need to take a break, I think a variation on Ithuriel's idea is a very good one.

Could Vethran drop prone as an immediate action? Thereby allowing Hudak to move into his space?

I understand that this would be bending the rules, as dropping prone is a free action (which can only be done on your turn) ... however, I see dropping prone as an immediate (perhaps even involuntary) response to being reduced to 0 hp and disabled.

Hudak could simply hold action to go after me. It wouldn't really gum up the works at all.

Thanks. I thought maybe it sounded a bit random or weak ... but I can imagine her delivering it in a really calm, neutral voice as she fights the goblin. My aim is for Tsutso to lose his cool and come after Elisile rather than trying to finish off Veth; I get the sense he's the sort who will hold a grudge and take things personally.

It is quite the challenge avoiding spoilers around this place ... Half the time the thread title is a spoiler in itself. (And putting "Spoiler Warning" in the title just makes it worse half the time. Youre like "oh, what shouldn't I know about that guy")
