Love me some skill challenges... where I get to haphazardly roll untrained skills with my off-stats... nothing like gambling with your fellow players' lives!

Thom snaps out of the quiet he's been in and his grey eyes take in the trees, "Now this aint really what i expected. Anybody know where the hells we're goin'?"

I'll just check out the rules for getting lost in the wilderness... A bit of a poor show since you only have been riding for about two hours from Oleg's.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

I don't know what you're talking about… our general tactic is a dazzling display of feigned incompetence. See how well it worked back at Oleg's?

There's normally between four and eight there at one time - most of the time we're out foraging, not banditing. Me, I don't like the banditing, much prefer the foraging. Er, yeah..."

Which skills? To start me off - Perception 13+2=15, Nature 16+2=18.

Male Half-Elf Bard/3

Glad to hear you've been able to relax & get creative!

Right - Hasren's Perception and Survivial checks were terrible, or at least not that good. Quinn's fluttering about above, which means he can't see the ground due to the trees, unless he touches down. So it's down to you guys - where are you going? In fact, it might be time for a skill challenge...

Oh sure! Rub it in! Our live game on Saturday ran like that for way too many rounds. I hope this won't be a repeat!

Having lost sight of Quinn, Hasren tries to locate a landmark & regain his bearings.
Nature check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

I'm back! Glad to see that SOMEone has wilderness skills! :)

"WHat? We are not exactly where we intended to be?" MArc asks with feigned interest. He is busy playing with a tiny ball of magical flame floating between his fingers,...

Basically, I want you in these situations to roleplay a reason for your skill choice. Unless you are taking the piss, you will most likely get agreement. So determine what is appropriate and roll.

Heimoth looks around helplessly before a flash of inspiration comes to him. "Now, I might be a city boy who doesn't know really his way around the wilderness, but I think that my old man once told me that moss only grows on the south side of trees. Now, I think I've seen moss growing on the left side, the right side and every which way on the trees we've passed - so it looks like we're not going in one consistent direction. Let's backtrack a bit, get our bearings again and then make sure we're actually going south."

That could be both Perception and Nature, no?

What? You don't want your character to starve to death while lost in the wilderness!?! :o I'm shocked & dismayed! :P

Heimoth wrote:

Still only counts as one success. I'm needing six successes versus three failures. I've got two successes and one miserable failure.

Hasren and Heimoth examine the trees while Aleph blunders through a stand of nettles with his hose about his ankles to do his business.

Expanding on the theme above, every time you enter a new hex and assuming you are not settling down to explore it, I will require you to do a skill challenge along these lines (6v3) to keep heading towards where you want to. The DCs will vary between easy and hard depending on the terrain - in the woods, they are hard due to a serious lack of line of sight. Just to reiterate, you won't have to do this for exploration, just for getting from A to B through unexplored land. Also, once you have explored a hex, you can move through it without having to do a navigation skill challenge.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

Hey, you said nearly anything goes, Aubrey… and sorry Aleph.

A minute or two after Aleph wanders into a particularly thick spot of brush to 'squeeze a sloppy dumplin', he bursts from the brush, a wordless scream of pain ripping from his lips, frantically jumping around grasping at his behind.

Fearing a snake bite or wise, Thom's first aid treatment training kicks in and he vaults from his horse and (despite the potential awkwardness/grotesqueness of his positioning) bends down to inspect the afflicted area.

Somehow Aleph had sat on what appears to be an aggressive thorn-bush, and now is wearing the prize for said action. Thoms' quick actions keep the group from losing hours of tending any serious wounds, and he's able to remove the offending thorns before they can cause any real harm to Aleph's posterior or the trip's timetable. (Aleph's waning love of nature aside.)

Heal 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24.

It counts. But you probably need to suck out the poison.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

I'm thinking this is one of those "remedy's worse than the malady" situations.

Sorcerer 4E

UNfortunately, Marc is seriously out of his element here! Unless you want me to try and sweet-talk the nettle bush, the best I can hope to accomplish is too roll aid another and hope that I roll a 10 or better with no bonuses to give the +2 bonus!

DM question, (forgive me if you covered this earlier) But how long will it take us to 'properly' map the hexes we explore instead of just stumbling through them in a hurry? It may behoove us to go ahead and map our progress, even though it may delay our surprising the bandit camp, in lieu of injuring ourselves trying to rush through! What do you guys think?

With a (small, not TOO offensive) sigh of the long-suffering, Marc snuffs his tiny flame and slides off of his mount.

"Right! So what's the problem then? I confess i'm not much of a woodsman, but Father said I should apply myself and learn new things! And I've found that ofttimes two heads are better than one! Where can I be of assistance?" The dandy declares happily, (somehow making it sound more like a statement than a question.)

I must agree. At least for the physician! :)

It takes several days, depending on the terrain. For woods, four days per hex.

By the way, does anyone know if there is a sort of hex-mapping thing online, so maybe we could have an interactive map for the campaign? Someone else would have to actually do the mapping - I'm rubbish at these things - but does anyone know if it is possible?

Male Half-elf Paladin 3

My wife's really good with graphic design, so I'll ask her. I can't imagine that we'll make a truly interactive map, but it shouldn't be too hard to create a set of hex coordinates; whenever appropriate I'll update it and mail out the new and improved map.

A question about the skill challenges - how many can we do each, and how often? I can see how we can't delegate all 9 checks to Quinn, but do we wait until everyone's tried one before attempting another one?

Sorcerer 4E

Heimoth, Your wife is my new hero! :) So if it takes four days to map one hex of woods, I guess we should press on to try and catch the bandit camp by surprise before they get suspicious. We can 'map' on teh way back once we beat them up! ;)

Male Half-elf Paladin 3

Hey, you've actually met her! Do we have a 'base' map showing large features like rivers, lakes and mountains, or will it be a from-scratch effort with blank hexes?

Blank hexes - it is terra incognita, after all. I just want it as a record that you can all access of what you have explored.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

I agree with Marc as to what our plan should be... let's just continue through for now, this group of bandits being our priority, then, if we can, we map/explore as we trek back to Oleg's. (I'm guessing that second part may change once we've dealt with the bandits, but it's a good tentative plan.)

Also, if it's kosher, Thom will spend the day trying to help the group spot the landmarks we got from the bandits at Oleg's.

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21.

A few more skill checks from the rest of the party would go down quite nicely at this point - the skill challenge is for the whole party, not just those who wish to chip in.

Four successes, one failure so far.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

So we're waiting for Quinn and Marc?

Male Half-Elf Bard/3

As the group approaches a clearing in the woods, Hasren will ask Marc if he can tell if this is a fairy-ring (Arcane?) He also suggests that getting a vantage from higher up (Athletics) might help with figuring that out, or help locate more landmarks.

Also, with the opening in the canopy, Hasren will ask if anyone can see Quinn? (Perception) If so, let's try to get his attention & have him join up with us to let us know what he's seen from above.

Or, Marc could just shoot a flashy spell up into the air from the clearing. That should probably get Quinn's attention (and hopefully not also attract any hungry predators...)

Hope it's ok with everyone if I make suggestions like this.

Sure.

Sorcerer 4E

Suggestions are fine with me! I'm just making this up as I go! :)

Marc turns his attention to the ring in question, and actually looses most of his nose-in-the-air attitude as he examines it. (Although it returns shortly after.)

K:Arcana=
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

AFter his examination of the mysterious ring, he ditches his jacket and vest, and attempts to shimmy up a tree to get a better vantage point for landmarks.

Athletics=
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

While the dandy displays more natural skill than one might expect from a city-slicker, he has difficulty finding good hand-holds on the tree, and does not make it up as far as he was obviously hoping. Nevertheless, he makes a valiant attempt, and peers from his swaying vantage point attempting to locate the described landmarks,...

Perception= +0 + any bonuses from being up higher?
1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1

Unfortunately, all he sees are the branches hitting him in the face! ;P

Male Half-elf Paladin 3

Taking a clue from Hasren, Heimoth makes his way into the nearest clearing, hoping his shiny armour will act as a beacon for the airborne Quinn. And if he can't see me, he can probably hear Aleph and Marc blundering into every sharp object this forest has to offer.

Perception to spot Quinn 11+2=13.

Male Human Druid 1

Sorry guys, having a frustrating time of it. Takes me 3 or 4 tries to post anything. I get "Page cannot be displayed" messages, but I have no connection issues. Been trying to fix it with no luck, so I guess I'll suffer through it. :(

Quinn quickly realizing that he has lost track of the group in the heavy woods, flys down to a point in front of the struggling party.

"I'm here." he says quietly, stepping out onto the trail in his human form.

After a moment, he bends down to take a handful of loose soil and run it through his fingers. With a sniff, he casts it into the air, and stands a moment observing its fall. He walks around a large tree, one hand running along its bark, looking at the tree from top to bottom. Every few moments, he looks back along the path they've come, then forward along the direction of travel.

Forgot this
Nature roll 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Male Half-Elf Bard/3

Woof. I hope those targets we need to beat are low... Ah well... I think our problems are solved! Look! The woods are clearing out, but I think we're just a bit off-course. There's beach as far as I can see! There's sand at the beach right? :P

Oh and I guess I should have indicated Marc only needed to pick one of those things I suggested (as that's generally how skill challenges work). I was trying to show, in character, various ways people might justify what might seem like inapplicable skills that they're good at. I figure Aubrey can tell us if that's just plain silly and he won't have any of it if we push it too far.

The party meanders through the woods, looking for the landmarks described by the erstwhile bandit. Their search is in vain, and after several hours in the forest, they have to admit that they are lost.

1d6 ⇒ 6

Eventually they find themselves emerging from the trees on to the plain again. However, from where they are now, there is no sign of civilisation - certainly, Oleg's is nowhere to be seen.

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

"Well this is a jam."
Head to....the right, following the treeline, I reckon.

Sorcerer 4E

"Well. This is embarrassing I must confess." Marc mumbles contritely.

"For one of my skills i mean. I mean for one who can find his way to any pub in town blindfolded, whether i've been there before or not!" He explains with a shrug of his shoulders.

"So, any other ideas? Other than the treeline I mean, that one is brilliant of course, but I was hoping for one a bit more,... inspired." He says apologetically, nodding towards Aleph.

In ALL of my years as a player, I must confess, I have NEVER been 'lost in the woods' before! Brilliant! (Embarrassing, but brilliant!) ;P

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

"Fine with me. I'm partial to doing that though....I understand if you get lost and somebody's looking for you, you should start a fire and stay put.
But nobody's looking for us. So, unless somebody has an inspiration, I think I'd rather die striving than mummifying right here.
I don't reckon it as we're lost anyhow, just gathering our bearings."

Male Human Druid 1

Quinn stops to take a look around. Long moments pass as he looks out at the plain, back to the forest, and back out towards the plain again.

Insight 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 Nature 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

"We are strangers here. The land will tell us where to go." He says softly.

I hope...talk about embarassing...some druid...

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

"That's good......"
Aleph looks around; puts his hand behind an ear, literally hoping for the ground to grow a mouth and give him directions.

Sorcerer 4E

"Yeah, and unfortunately the only ones that MIGHT be looking for us are the ones that WE want to find! FIrst!"

"Oh, Sorry!" MArc adds softer, aware that he might be distracting Quinn from actually figuring out where they are.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

Thom stands dumbfounded as Quinn literally listens to the ground. Well I've never… can he actually hear anything?

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

Aleph gets down there too....

Male Half-elf Paladin 3

Heimoth sends Thom a skeptical glance before shrugging his shoulders. "Gorum certainly does not speak through the ground. But maybe the gods of unspoiled places do?" He looks out over the open plain. "Well, it looks like we are well and truly lost. If Quinn could take to the skies again, perhaps he can spot Oleg's trading post? Until then, Aleph's suggestion is as good as any other. Let's follow the treeline."

Quinn concludes that the party has strayed west and north, emerging from the woods maybe ten or twelve miles south-west of Oleg's.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

Thom nods in response to the paladin's words and waits for Quinn's report. When they are informed, he shrugs, "Well, much as I hate the opportunity for problems it presents, it's worth thinkin' a bringin' one of them bandits with us for direction." he runs an eye over the rest of you, "Unless we think we can make the second time the charm."

Male Human Druid 1

"Let us return to our starting point. It will be the best way to find the bandit camp." Quinn says. "Take one of them with us...yes. He can show us how 'repentant' he is then, or die like the rest."

You released the bandits and they have gone.

HP 20/20 :: AC 18 :: +5 Perc, +3 Init :: Fort +2 Reflex +5 Will +1

Facepalm

Soooo... we try again?

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

Head back then? We should find somewhere to camp some time soonish. I bet we won't make it back by nightfall.

Any way to know what time it is?...

I'm sooooo tempted, but...

Despite Aleph's bleak assessment, they make it back to Oleg's as the sun is just dipping behind the mountains to the west, guided by Quinn from above. Oleg and Svetlana greet the conquering adventurers warmly.

"So, did you give those bandits what they deserved?" asks Oleg.

m Human Warlock 3 exp 2318 (infernal boon)

"Uh,....we didn't. Not yet. We're just....gathering our bearings I guess....got lost..."
