Janosz gets to make a stabilisation roll. Then it's back to the top and, since Rod is spacing out, Nev.

Of course he did. I missed the stabiisation roll and am now at -5. Does Freedom of movement help against the spider's gaze weapon?

No - it doesn't paralyse you, you just don't feel like doing anything.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Could Calm emotions or something similar neutralise it?

More likely the opposite would do it - the problem is a surfeit of calmness.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

vital strike: 1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 18 + 1 = 23
4d6 + 12 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 6) + 12 = 22

Nevharath shakes the cobwebs out of his mind and moves down carefully, looking to strike the ettercap down so his companions can move to safely collect their fallen. He brings his weapon down in a mighty overhead arc.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

While I still think we're doomed, I guess massive damage is the way to go - Gil casting Scorching ray via Shadow evocation and Ez hopefully squeezing off his Empowered scorching ray before being paralysed. If Rod could get me back on my feet and Gelb can deal with the ettercap, at least we'll all die while standing upright rather than ending up like the pukwudgie.

Nevharath catches the ettercap a glancing blow but fails to stop it. Seeing that one of its prey is still resisting its lure, the spider shifts forwards to sink its fangs into the kalashtar.

Spider bites Nev: 1d20 + 27 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 27 - 4 = 40 to hit, damage 12d8 + 24 + 12 ⇒ (2, 7, 2, 6, 5, 6, 4, 4, 5, 2, 4, 8) + 24 + 12 = 91 plus poison. Poison is Fort save DC 24; frequency 1/round for six rounds; 1d8 STR damage; cure 2 consecutive saves.

The ettercap's turn will depend on if Nev is still standing up or not.

He has 6 hit points left and a comically bad AC. This could get really ugly.

"pretty......spider......those eyes are kewl...."

I calculate he's down. He's bad at noting the damage he's taken and he got beaten up by the ettercaps a while back, although partially healed back up by Rod.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Probably. Are the ettercaps something off the zombie family tree? That would explain my difficulty hurting them with my hammer.

No, you're just a hell of a lot better with a bow. In fact, things went south exactly when you put it down, though that's probably more of a coincidence.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

Nev is indeed down. The 86 HP he had before the hit was correct post-most-recent-Rod-channel.

was not expecting a +27 to hit... and a glance of my powers reveals nothing that i could do as an immediate action to save myself.

fort: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21 vs DC 24

Gil would like to be hovering in a position that's not within big-spider reach of any webs. Are there any such locations within a move action? If not, a position that (she thinks) the big-spider would take more than a move action to reach her would suffice.

since I am mesmerized by the spider, does that put me flat footed, or can I use my shield and whatnot?

if flat footed, I take all damage; if I can defend myself I take none.

You are not flat-footed and p[erfectly able to defend yourself, so it misses you.

Gil, you have a movement rate of 90' right now, so you can go pretty much anywhere, including up or down. I'm not sure there are any places where the spider can't ultimately reach you if it really wanted to, but it's fair to say you have the edge on it right now in terms of mobility. So pick a spot. Also, since you don't really need to double-move (unless you are just getting away) you still have your standard action.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

After that...
The air elemental somehow rouses itself and plows into the spider with renewed fury. Thunder rumbles in the cavern and the cloud serpent expels a torrent of jagged hail shards at the spider's backside.

Elemental, Averting Eyes (51+ = success): 1d100 ⇒ 60
Concealment(1-20 = miss): 1d100 ⇒ 74

Slam 2: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23, Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13

I'll figure out what to do with Ez or if he can act later today.

Ez's save against the poison will come at the end of his turn, so he will get to act for at least this coming turn.

I'm having trouble visualizing in 3D, but Gil will want line of sight and line of effect on the spider within 120'. I guess she will move to M10 and up 60', assuming that gives her the lines she needs.

Gil curses mentally at the situation and flies back away from the spider looking for an angle. As she goes, she draws another wand.

Will Save DC 24 to have a standard action: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Once she's in position, she turns to face her adversary... and forgets what it was she was doing.

Damn. An action point can't save that one. I'm acting under the assumption that I cannot target the creature while averting my eyes.

If you are that distance away, you are immune to the gaze attack - it's pretty short range. However, you need to actually make the move - if you successfully avert your eyes while trying to get out, you are fine and I'll place you in a suitable position. If not, you don't move at all. 50:50.....

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

You can target it while averting your eyes as per the rules I posted. It gets concealment so you roll a percentile for that and have a 20% chance of missing before you even roll to hit.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Barely able to lift his arms Ezreal points in the general direction of the spider and blasts it with three jets of flame. "Xativa! Snap out of it! Call down your god's wrath!" As the last of the flame flickers away Ezreal groans and falls unconscious.

Averting Eyes (51+ = Success): 1d100 ⇒ 87
Defensive Casting vs DC 19: 1d20 + 11 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 11 + 8 = 20 I don't think 1's auto fail except on saves or rolls to hit, so that should be okay.

holy shit.

You're trying to give me an ulcer.

Rodergo stumbles over the words of his prayer, but his faith is strong. The column of silver fire whooshes down from above, slamming into the spider. It bursts into flame and slips from the threads it was holding, falling into the chasm. Its glowing carcass drops further and further, bouncing off obstructions, dwindling from sight until finally disapearing as the webs block the view.

The ettercap gives a shriek, spasms, and falls apart.

End of combat. Phew! 9,150xp each.

It was lucky Heathy rolled good damage...

Who needs healing?

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Everybody? I'm unconscious, as is Nev. Ezreal is hurt and paralysed; Gelb is merely very hurt (and might be poisoned by the ettercaps' grapple swarms?) You took a beating from the ettercaps. How's Gil feeling?

Also, good job killing that thing. I was sure we were done for.

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

Wow. That's one of those things that you're glad you did.....once you see that it actually worked.

5d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 3, 4) = 17 healing to everybody; I drag the unconscious into my radius if need be.

By the way, that fight displays the power of the Vital Strike chain of feats. Especially for natural weapon attacks which are not iterative. Might be worth considering for some of our more damage-deal-y types (though Nev is already a convert). That made the spider's bite extremely brutal.

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

I was gonna channel a heal, but was worried I'd put somebody up to 10 hp who was going to take 35 hp the next round;
at Ez's prompting I figured it was time to break bad with a flame strike.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

Yeah, I went from "we'll be fine" to "thinking about rolling a warpriest" with 1 bite. Gotta figure something out with my AC, although the +15 I'd need to have even had a shot versus that thing is useless.

Rod's channel should be enough to get everyone except Ezreal back on their feet. Ez needs a somewhat more powerful intervention.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Ghngh..." Janosz slowly gets up, gingerly feeling the puncture wounds in his chest and wiping away the black slime oozing from them. "I don't really like spiders even in the best of times."

"Now, should we try to recover the packed spider meals? One of them might be one of Gaia Sotharr's buddies."

Nevharath wrote:

I was there too - I had a prety cool new character mostly planned out. Maybe later... Also, AC is all about layering. Amulets, rings, armour, shield and so forth.

20s - just when you didn't need them. Someone needs to cast Restoration or something similar on Ez to get him back on his feet.

If you want to check the cocoons, they are mostly out of reach and there are still the sticky webs to think about. So someone with Fly and maybe Freedom of Movement (or just very careful flying) will need to check them out.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

Nev should still have Fly active, and has ridiculous perception. Let me know if you all want him to go over

Gil managed to avoid being a target by spending actions buffing rather than attacking but she was finally going to sacrifice her invisibility to cast a lightning bolt when her dice went south along with everything else.

When Nevharath looks upward, Gil's voice comes forth, "I will investigate the corpses, Nevharath. Stay there - you look like you could use more healing."

She will refresh her fly spell if necessary. I have no idea how long it has been in game terms since she cast it.
