BTW Aubrey, was that an appropriate way to handle a none critical choice without enduring retcon?

I liberally assumed that at some point in my craptacular attempt to pick the lock, I was foiled (by the lack of lock) and moved back.

That's fine - you and Janosz made good Move Silently checks so you could get in and out again. I want you to have the necessary tactical discussions before you go in, so I'm not going to get anal or silly about where precisely you might be standing or not while having them.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

I have this sudden odd desire to have a repeating crossbow that casts light on every bolt... tracer rounds...

If I'm too close to the fence for safe spellcasting volume, I want to pull back into the shabby tenement area for a few seconds to go ahead and cast Mage Armor now. 2 hour duration, so there is no point in waiting.

I'll cast the Light for Trose at that point as well. Good for 20 minutes.

Edit: Nevermind. I dropped Light from my prepped list today.

I'll cast the light spell for Trose. I love it when I can be useful with a 0-lvl spell.

I'd rather we all went in the pipe, with the mage's ghost sound diversion, but Runzyl wants to launch a full frontal attack, and our noble Lightbringer worries about the cramped spaces."

"Mhmmmm... sewer crawl. We'll be back in a little bit, guys". With that, the two Tharashk retainers carefully make their way to the pipe and sneak in.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Once inside the pip sufficently that I don't fear the light will give us away, I pull the quarrel from my sleeve and load it into the crossbow.

It should provide enough light to see by, and if we run into something to fight, we won't be stuck in the middle of a pool of our own light, but still able to see the target.

I make specifically sure to watch for any cross branches, or especially grates heading up, and shield the light as necessary

No, you don't - Move Silently check, please.

Spoiler for Janosz and Runzyl:

Spoiler:
The stench emanating from the sewer pipe is unbelievably dreadful - a mixture of waste and rot mixed with chemical horror. The floor and walls are covered in a thick, shin-deep mucky layer of putrifying black gunk which squelches horribly underfoot and sends up wafts of indescribale stench. The pipe itself is dark and unlit, but a glimmer of light in the far distance suggests an exit from the pie, somewhere in the tannery. The pipe diameter inside is about 4', forcing the explorers to crouch as they progress along its length.

DC 10 Fort check or lose your breakfast and be Sickened while in the pipe. Also, as you proceed along the pipe, can I have a Spot check please. Finally, what is the marching order - you can only go one in front of the other.

From previous page, one of us made our roll

Janosz hasn't - still awaiting his Move Silently roll.

Also - just checked above: apologies, I got the names wrong for the spoiler above (it was late). It should be for Trose and Janosz. Runzyl, do not read the spoiler two posts above - it is not for you!

Right - just read the discussion thread and am now up to date. Rolling Janosz's Move Silently: 12 + 7 = 19. Fort save = 11 + 5 = 16. Spot = 8 + 9 = 17.

Spoiler (the real spoiler) for Runzyl:

Spoiler:
Runzyl creeps along the fence with Janosz and Trose until they reach the pipe - Move Silently check, please - until, with a silent nod of farewell, they slip into the noisome aperture. Runzyl carries on further - another Move Silently check - until he gets level with the water tower about 100' further on.

OK - Listen check please. If you want to peer over surreptitiously, you need to make a Hide check to avoid being spotted, and I'll give you more description. If you just want to hop over, it is a DC 10 Climb check. If you wish to slip over, silent and unseen as a ghost, it will also require a Move Silently and a Hide check as well as the Climb.

Spoiler for Rodergo, Lightbringer and Ezreal:

Spoiler:
The three companions, plus the four mercenaries, crouch down behind one of the crude houses near the gates, wathcing the gates and the water tower for any activity. Hide checks, please, from everyone. The waiting is always the worst part before any battle.

If you want to work out how easy it might be to crash open the gate, try a Knowledge (Engineering & Architecture) check. You can try it untrained.

Spoiler:
Shortly after Trose, Janosz and Runzyl make their way to the riverbank Ezreal begins casting in a muddy alley between tenement houses. In the distance, near where the first row of houses join the cliffside everyone can plainly hear a vicious dogfight break out. The encounter builds in ferocity ending with the yelping retreat of one of the mutts.

Well- no one seemed that interested in the diversionary tactic, but I might as well do it anyway. As it turns out I can only maintain it for 12 seconds, but for what it's worth maybe they squeeze by on a tight move silently check. Can't hurt really.

Spoiler for Ezreal & co.

Spoiler:
You hear barking coming from the tannery compound, and gutteral shouts, in the direction of the diversion. These quickly die down.

Fort 12+0=12

Spot 14+5+6 action point = 25

Marching order is me in front, once i fire the Light bolt we will be in the dark and they will be in the light... or near the light if i miss...

Once I fire, I will take a knee so Janosz can cover me and fire over me

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

Time ticks by interminably slow for Rodergo. It never ceases to amaze him, he thinks to himself, how in the midst of a combat seconds can seem like days.
ironic, ain't I?

Spoiler for Trose and Janosz

Spoiler:
Suddenly rearing up out of the pool muck where it was submerged is a child-sized, skeletal figure, ordure and filth spilling from its grinning jaws and hanging in thick strands fom its ribcage. Tiny pinpoints of red light glowing in its vacan eye sockets, it leans forwad to slash at Trose.

You are about 30' in. The pipe is a 4' diameter cylinder. You spotted the tell-tale swirling in the goo, so there is no surprise round. Roll initiative, please.

Due to the cramped space, you take -2 to hit with light weapons and -4 to hit with 1H weapons. It is impossible to use 2H weapons. Piercing melee weapons that are jabbed at the target (spear: yes, spiked chain: no) count as one size category smaller. A crossbow is usable (but counts as a 2H weapon still) and a bow is unusable. You cannot run and you cannot charge. Also, it is treacherous underfoot - a DC 10 Reflex save is required is you move at more than half speed.

Your assailant is in the square directly ahead of Trose.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Spoiler:

Initiative: 15+2 =17

I will go to total defense (AC 18) for the first round, making sure Janosz is ready to fight.

Spoiler for Rodergo:

Spoiler:
Rodergo examines the gate and thinks it might be tough to break down, though possible if everyone in his little group has a go. But it should be a lot easier to climb - the top can be grabbed at a jump to haul oneself up and over.

Heathy, please try and keep the rolls in this thread - the discussion thread is for general out-of-character discussion, not actual play. It can make things a bit trickier for me if you post your rolls there.

I'm just waiting for a groupthink good citation here; then I'm gonna buff at least myself and lightbringer with shield of faith right before we go for it. I can do shield of faith on Farlowe too, unless he wants to do mage armor.

Runzyl, untrained in the ways of stealth, has difficulty moving through the brush quietly. He follows Trose and Janosz's lead to the pipe and, from there, manages to make even more noise without their guidance. Focused entirely too much on listening to himself and cursing his inability to perform such a basic task, Runzyl manages to conceal himself well enough to (hopefully) avoid detection as he peeks over the wall.

For Lightbringer, Rodergo and Ezreal:

Spoiler:
You hear a shout from the gnolls on top of the water tower. One of them is pointing in the direction of where you are crouching.

Roll initiative.

For Runzyl:

Spoiler:
Runzyl's noisy progress through the undergrowth rouses the interest of the guards on the water butt. One of them walks to the edge and leans over the rail that runs around the top, craning to see who or what is making the noise, but Runzyl is able to stay hidden.

Suddenly, the other one shouts and points away from Runzyl's hiding place, towards the entrance to the compound. It raises something to its mouth and blows. It is faint, at the very edge of your ability to hear, and you only do because of your keen elven senses. A whistle, to raise the alarm.

Roll initiative.

For Janosz and Trose:

Spoiler:
Rolling initiative for Janosz: 8 + 3 = 11. Rolling initiative for the skelly: 15.

Initiative order =
Trose
Skeleton
Janosz

As Trose is going full defensive, the skeleton attacks first.

The filth-dripping thing swipes its claws at Trose, but he is able to pull back and the blow misses.

Now Janosz.

Spoiler for DM, Ezreal and Xativa:

Spoiler:

“We are seen!” growls Lightbringer, tightening his grip on his sword. “Let us make our final preparations here behind this wall, where we have a little cover, and are at some range from those archers on the water-butt. Then, we run towards the wall and climb. Arek, Bool, Ceshto, Drim, help the three of us get over the wall, then come over yourselves whilst we are softening up the opposition. Come over about ten feet away from our position and, if possible, help us to flank any opponents. We will keep our backs to the wall, or at least Xativa and I will try to protect Ezreal – that is, if you want to come over with us Ezreal, or you can come over with the half orcs if you prefer.”

Rolled my init earlier: 4

Spoiler for Ezreal, Lightbringer and Rodergo:

Spoiler:
Don't worry too much about initative order for the first round, just post a round's worth of actions. This will keep things moving. Gnoll ninjas aren't about the drop out of the sky on you. Yet.

And please keep it in spoilers.

Spoiler (another) for Runzyl:

Spoiler:
As Runzyl peers over the fence, he can see the top end of the compound. To his immediate left is the water tower. The structure is wooden - effectively, a giant barrel - with wooden rungs up the side to allow access to the top. To his right is a series of sheds of various sizes, most 30'-40' long or more with single or double doors, arranged across the space inside the fence.

Directly opposite him and about 30' away is a large shed with big, barn-like doors, which abutts directly against the cliff face (all the others appear to be free-standing). In front of this stands a gnoll holding a pair of leads with two large, savage-looking hounds at the ends. It is peering towards the entrance of the tannery site. So are the two gnolls on top of the water tower, who fortunately seem to have forgotten about a potential invasion over the fence.

Listen check, please.

Spoiler for Trose and Janosz:

Spoiler:
Janosz draws his kukri. As NPC'ing a PC goes, not the most radical thing to do. He can't reach the skeleton because Trose is standing in the way. Trose can now act.

Scroll in hand the mage recites a quick incantion of protection.

Spoiler:

I am going to try to club the thing with my crossbow butt,

I rolled a 13, improvised weapon -4, +4 normal, if it is 1 handed, then -4 = 9, go me

Then I will attempt to tumble by, for which I rolled 19 + 7 + 6 (action point) = 32

If necessary to succeed I drop the crossbow.

And a note, apparently with 5+ ranks of tumble, you get +6 AC on total defense... didn't know that

Spoiler for Trose:

Spoiler:
Which way are you tumbling? Forward or backwards? You can go forwards if you want - the check is high enough, even with a hefty minus for the conditions of the floor and lack of space. You can hang on to the crossbow - 32 is a fairly god-like Tumble check.

Bool (Mercenary B): 14
