Jelani |
I haven't been posting for two reasons, 1) Jelani won't sleep with a whore, 2) He's not suited to sneaking, bluffing or 'face' type stuff in general. So he's happy to just sit in the base waiting for whoever to go scout the place out and see what we can see. Other than that I'm really not sure what to do at this point.
Naberius, "Blast" |
I'm also wondering what exactly to do at the moment with Blast. He would probably be fine doing the Harlot thing, but it's not really something he'd do, y'know? I'll figure something...
Meanwhile, I have some family visiting for Mother's Day, so I don't have much time to post. I might get some in at school, but I probably won't be able to post from home for a few days. Please bot me as needed! Thanks.
Taurven Wess |
How about we go as the whole group, then. Use our passes to gain entrance, then rather than using the harlots, start exploring the building. If things get out of hand, we could use our power to teleport out.
It's kind of the 'Murder Hobo' way of doing it, but we aren't really getting much in the way of intel. (This may be our fault.) At least everyone would get to play.
GM Arkwright |
That is how I'd planned it, though I'm afraid you don't have your teleportation power. Where is it... hmm... bingo!
"-The ability to, once every two months, cast Greater Teleport when in a circle as a spell-like ability, taking with you all of you and whoever is in the middle of the circle. "
Hasn't been two months yet, I'm afraid.
Gunser of Biston |
Not all of us have clothes correct to the task of such a visit.
We've some money, we can get such. It's a week to get that done right, and we'll need several tailors involved.
If it's just Recon, I don't mind the reasonable sitting-out period.
I'll confess to confusion about our intention there. If this is recon, all going together makes no sense. Recon is a couple guys, and maybe a plan to insert rapid backup, turning it into a raid. If this is a raid, we have a lot of great resources.
We have two rings of Transposition. Each of them can be touched to a regular ring, and later the wearer of the ring can swap places (800' range) with another person. So we can do this:
Connect ring A(magical) to A'(normal). And B to B'. Send two or three of your people in, carrying A and B. They get some wimpy resident of the house to wear and activate the rings, swapping in two of our ugliest fighter dudes. The wimpy types wind up outside, in the 'swap house', where our 6th (or more) can keep an eye on them, or knock them out or whatever, but surely at least take the magical rings. We raise whatever hell inside.
I'm sorry if I'm not driving things forward like I might have been before, good weather hits my email stuff hard.
GM Arkwright |
I do see your logic about recon being best done with only a few people; but that would leave those people with nothing to do but read updates for at least a week. Would you be be willing to suspend the most logical action and go in as a group, for the sake of the game? I can promise there won't be any undue disadvantage.
Jelani |
The looming threat of retribution from the brothel's elite clientel is the issue. If we just go in, get made and then kill everyone we're going to have every lecherous noble in the city pissed at us. If we all go in together we should just find the gull and kill them.
Mirrender Elf-Blood |
Errr, I'm kinda against just goin' in and killing everyone. I'm still feeling bad about killing the knight in the sewers (but not the Gnome/Gull he worked for).
A little bit of Freakonomics wisdom -- you don't actually have to sleep with them. Apparently (having never visited one myself, I have to go by the written word) the high priced hookers spend most of their time talking, listening, and being interested in their clients. They learn things like Shakespear and Aristotle to be able to talk to their high-priced clients.
Oh, and sometimes they'll have sex.
So, maybe Jelani's thing is to find a pretty girl and talk about tactics and noble warfare or something like that? As for Mirrender ... maybe his love interest thinks he needs to learn to be more "manly" -- Wizards being "less than manly" and all -- how to eat, how to treat a lady, that sort of thing.
*heh* Sorry for the Stereotype *heh*.
So .... well, just some ideas. Let's see what else we can come up with.
Gunser of Biston |
Well, folks, when the GM says, "This is what I have", then 'this' is what we play. It's like one of those movies that starts with the action, or with some old guy telling a story...
"I don't quite recall all of what convinced us to go it that way", the old sea-prince said in what was left of his voice, "Damn foolish, it was, but it worked out. Sometimes, I think that star-brand wore us, more than we wore it... Anyhow, Me and Jelani, being ugliest, we were planned to go in dif'rent from the pretty ones... I ever tell you about Mel? Ah, Mel..."
GM Arkwright |
Heh- mildly tempted to write up a few prostitutes tailored for each of your characters' tastes. But perhaps anther time.
This is still a sandbox- entirely up to you fellows to decide what to do. For the sake of making sure everyone has fun though, I'm going to tell you in advance that there won't be any undue trouble in going to the Harlot as a group. Simple as that.

Um... please don't. :)

Sounds good.
Taurven Wess |
That's the nice thing about having a base. It's a place to keep your extra clothes. Taurven already had a noble's outfit but he will add another.
While we are at it, I want to get a buckler as well. Taurven's AC is not good.
Jelani |
So I've been reading Malazan Book of the Fallen recently, and I gotta ask Arkwright, are you a fan? Seems like Hairlock and Naboo have a lot in common, and your style seems to draw a lot from Erikson.
Jelani |
Yeah, I'd say. There's 10 of them at over 1000 pages each. Just finishing up the first one. It takes over half the book to get into it because there is literally no exposition. So at first you just get all these characters and scenes and you don't really see how they are connected. Kinda like putting a puzzle together, but once those pieces start to fall into place it's a page turner for sure.
Erikson is the author's name. Malazan Book of the Fallen is the series' name. The first book is Gardens of the Moon. Hairlock is a wizard who gets soul-shifted into a little wooden puppet.
Naberius, "Blast" |
Hey, everyone, I'm back. Sorry for my absence--it was much longer than intended. I really only was going to be away for a few days as family visited. Then the hammer of life came crashing down--AP tests, school work as the year comes to a close, trying to find a summer job... Things piled up. As such, it's been two weeks since I even got on the forum.
Now I'm trying to patch up where I am on these boards, with the games I'm in. I've had to drop a lot of games, but I'd like to stay here, if it's possible. This game has a lot of sentimentality to me--it's the first PbP I got into here--as well as being a load of fun, and I'm enjoying playing a lot. If you'll have me back, I'd love to join in again.
GM Arkwright |
If you'd like, though I would have thought this would play to your skills- roleplay and skill rolls.
Also note that there are embossed signs outside each silver door.
Just as a reminder-
Brown doors: Not allowed to enter
Obsidian door: Mistress' door, not allowed to enter
Gold door: Corridor, allowed to enter
Silver door: Harlots, allowed to enter
Taurven Wess |
Maybe that's the problem. I'm feeling uninspired right now. Normally, If my games are slow, like now, I'd put in for some new ones. That seems like just too much effort right now.
I'm sure it will pass.
Jelani |
I also don't feel like doing anything. If it were up to Jelani we just start killing everyone that works here. But that's just because the idea of trying to figure out the "clever" way to get through this place to find the Gull, using the PBP medium sounds extremely tedious and boring. I guess we could just go to the Obsidion Door and try to break through it, see what happens.
Gunser of Biston |
The weather or season or something I think has really taken a lot of drive out of most of my games. It's not just us.
Ark, I don't think the setting is putting anyone off. Of course, they have to say that for themselves.
Let's do hope Mel chimes in, what with Mirry and Gunser both in some degree of orbit of the lass, she's the center of gravity of the group at the moment.
Mirrender Elf-Blood |
Thinking out loud:
I don't think any of us want to do detailed RPing. This isn't an Adult game, and that's not allowed on the board anyway. That leaves me, pretty much, with Singing. Well, he isn't going to do any "adult" stuff anyways ... not even behind the curtains. Not his style.
That said, I am up for looking in a few of the "allowed" rooms.
I'm also thinking that we should take a more subtle approach here -- turn the Silver Harlot to one of our assets rather than doing anything rash. Not sure how to go about that though ...
Gee, I wish we had a Bard or something to take care of the sneakery. *lol*
Jelani |
I'm here but too far into the "meh"-zone with this whole Silver Harlot thing to post any. I suspect most others have quit. Time for a reboot? Time for GM Arkwright to start a game that was his from the beginning, and not the strange leftovers of Wolfman?
Gunser of Biston |
You know, Jelani has a point.
Ark, you have soldiered on, uphill, carrying another guy's odd scenario. You have worked through static from players, and yielded where it was correct. You have also stuck to your guns where you were sure of yourself. You, sir, are a GM worthy of the title.
The game has weathered loss of players, change of players, retconns back to the first scene (multiples of that). But I think maybe too many of us (me too) were too willing to ride, rather than push. I've blamed the weather, but it's also the players, the characters, and the scene. Gunser's spoken some, but I expect he'd have had more to say if our diplomats had been more active, as well.
Inertia is hard. Airplanes have a 'stall speed', I think campaigns do, too.
Ark, you deserve more success than I think we're going to give you. If you can drag Wolfman's weirdness and 5 cast changes this far, and make it as fun as it's been, I'm hopeful you might fly, with those burdens removed.
And that you let me apply.
Javell DeLeon |
I gotta agree with KRNVR. What he said is spot on. Truly a solid GM and impressively willing to work with the players and put up with our crap. :)
Definitely appreciate the work you've done, bud.
And with Casey not even being there at the Harlot kinda leaves him out to dry. But that's on me.
Plus, RL has been busier for me and my posting has taken a hit because of it. I manage to keep up with what I got but sometimes that's a struggle.
Naberius, "Blast" |
I'd like to second everything said above. This has been an amazing game so far, entirely because of you, GM Arkwright. You've pulled it out of the mud several times, let me jump in after two absences, and created this epic scenario... That seems to have sort of died out, sadly. I think this has been a great run, but it's sort of stalled out, and it may be for the best to reboot, as Jelani and Gunser suggest. And I also hope that I can apply to that game.
