Hi all, I'm back in and able to post. Apologies about the absence, and the lack of a proper note to let you know I won't be about. I had planned to post, but got tied up with work and getting final things for the wedding finished and so forgot to.

Anyway, understand things will probably be slow over Christmas anyway but just thought I'd let you know I'm back.

Welcome back...

Wedding... did you just get married???

Yes he did. The way Ash casually dropped that, I assume he thought I'd let you guys know already - but I figured I'd leave it to him if he wanted to mention it!

Male Human Bard 1/Ranger 1/Expert 3

Ash, congratulations!!! Was the lengthy absence also due to going on a quick honeymoon, or...???

Ash,

I would also like to express my congratulations to you and your wife.

If I may offer some small advice on married life, pick your battles. The wife needs to feel that she wins most of the time. :)

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Congrats Ash! That's great news. Hope you and the new Mrs. Ashwalker are doing well.

Male Human Scribe/4

Thanks all for the well-wishes (and advice ; ). I thought I may have mentioned it at some point but clearly not so sorry about that! We've been together for quite a while and already have a 20 month old son. Figured it was time I made an honest women out of her : )

The wedding was great and honeymoon great also. We kept it short though (just a week) because we left our lad behind and didn't want to be away from him for too long.

Where did you go for a honeymoon? And was it a big wedding?

Anyhow, I'm happy for ya...

Don't need to be married to learn that one... ;-)

Rightio folks, I am starting my holiday very soon – in the next few hours. Hope you all have a great – and safe – holiday season.

I really have no idea how much net access I’ll have over the next two weeks – but any chance I get I will check and / or post to the game thread – so look in if you have a chance.

Cheers,
Luke

Have a great, safe Holiday. Hope you receive many gaming goodies and enjoy the New Year.

One sleep, followed by 6 hours of work, and I'm there... kickin' off a week and a half off with a 2 hour massage! ... hang in there... you can do it... you can do it...

Happy holidays, Luke, and anyone else who is getting ready to sign off for a while (I guess Ash may already have done so)... I'll be around...

Sadly no - I've just been flat out with work this week - getting back from holidays and starting a new job (same company) and interstate trips etc. I had thought I'd still have a chance to get online but haven't - my apologies for slowing things down again - especially in the middle of a battle!

The wedding was mid-sized, about 115 people. We went to Vanuatu for 7 nights which was beautiful - great weather, good food, spectacular scenery and a quiet resort with a swim up bar. We couldn't ask for much more...

A few flurries are coming down now, but up here, Christmas Eve and Day were generally more dull brown than virgin white...

Yes, I hope that everyone's new year's eve celebration was suitably festive, and that the first week or so of 2008 has been kind to you so far.

If it's not entirely obvious as of yet - I'm back to pretty much my usual posting schedule. Thanks for your patience in regards to the sporadic posts over the past two weeks.

Aubrey's Eberron game is at about 3000 posts - that's the only one that beats us, although Dragonmann's Stormreach is not that far behind us either.

An excellent game nonetheless. Even our "Meanwhile, back at the Village ..." side thread had 79 posts.

Mothman,

I want to commend you on your vision to integrate Kajetan into the main thread. Nothing was forced, and it all seemed to flow so nicely. Character and story drove the threads together with such realism. Excellent Work!

Thanks man! Yeah, I'm sure we could have found a way to integrate him more quickly, but I thought this was a somewhat more interesting way to do it.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Per Keildrithe's question on Lorin: In my mind, I have pictured Lorin to be comparative to Italy. Insitutions of learning, museums, makers of fine wine, beautiful landscapes. A relatively simple life focusing on learning, family, art, and fine meals. Am I on the right track? Also, would Kajetan know about this Cabal of Magi's?

Thanks for any assistance.

That’s a good take on Loren; yes, it’s that sort of a place. As for the magi, you’re not sure what Keildrithe is referring to, apart from the usual definitions of the word, as mage/wizard or wise-man.

Just took a look at your Shackled City story. Really well written. Grabbed my attention from the first sentence. This is one I'll be following.

Nicely done!

Mothman, do you have access to the Complete Scoundrel? I've been thinking about Alton and I'm starting to see him as more of a Neutral Good character. I was thinking about taking a couple of levels of Paladin (although I'm not sure if Alton's really LG) and go for the Grey Guard PrC in the Complete Scoundrel. Would it be permissable to become a Paladin whilst NG?

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

In my opinion, Alton certainly acts in more of a “good” manner than his listed CN alignment. But he seems to dance to his own tune, and be something of a champion of freedom etc … To my reading of it, he’d be CG rather than CN or NG.

In which case … would you consider the Paladin of Freedom variant class from the SRD? That seems to fit.

Ash has the Complete Scoundrel, and I’ve flicked through it. I remember liking the Grey Guard PrC, but I’m not sure if a Paladin of Freedom would let you qualify for it (can’t remember the entry requirements). However, it likely would – in which case, go for it!

Which god would you follow?

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

I think that you have to be LG which could be a problem. I might use the PoF variant.
What gods would work with his morals? I forget if we're using PHB gods, your own gods, or a mix of the two.
I've been developing something of a moral code for him. What god might support freedom and good but would also allow some freedom in pursuit of those goals?

A mix of the two, but I've left that pretty vague so far, so if there's a deity you want to use (say from Dragon mag or from the Golarion pantheon), let me know and we can discuss it.

I'm thinking that Pelor might be a good bet? Or Corellan Larethian, who is not really an elven god in this campaign setting.

Mothman:

Spoiler:
I have been mulling something over for a few weeks, and I think I am going to retire Kajetan after we rescue Gosia and complete this chapter of the story. The game is really excellent, and you are a great DM, but I am not feeling a connection with Kajetan, and I think that I have stretched myself too thin with all of these PbP games. Work is becoming more of a hassle, and my wife is giving me a lot of grief for spending too much time on the computer.

I want be fair to you and give you a heads up so you have time to work it in the story and hopefully find a replacement player. If Kajetan dies, that is fine. If he survives, then maybe he will decide to stay with Gosia or continue on his original mission or even something else. Maybe even another player would want to continue the character. I could always send the profile info to you in an email, if this is the case

Sorry for the inconvenience, and I hope there are no hard feelings.

I want to thank you for having me in your game. It has been great.

Cheers

That's no problem - I will be sad to see you go, but I understand about real life impacting on game time! Some things are just more important...

I appreciate that you can see out this story arc (which hopefully won't last too much longer), and there are no hard feelings, though I'm sorry I wasn't able to get you into the group sooner.

I think once this story arc begins to wrap up I'll be recruiting for some extra characters anyway, so that should work out ok.

Male Human Scribe/4

Mothman:

Spoiler:
Laithe is very close to going up to third level. I've been considering taking a level in fighter (or perhaps Scout) for some extra combat ability. With Yruch probably not continuing on with us, sounds like it might be a good idea, considering Alton is the only fighter in the party.

However, on the other hand we don't really have a healer, and Laithe has been forced to take all healing spells for the last 2 nights. So from that point of view, maybe I should stick with the druid levels, which will grant me more spells. Any thoughts? were you planning to play a regular npc which would fill one of these roles?

On the other hand, I haven't had a real look at prestige classes at this stage, so there might be some other options I haven't seen yet

Ash:

Spoiler:
Up to you really man. You are one of the group’s heavy hitters, so a level or two of fighter (or maybe ranger or barbarian?) would probably not go astray … of course, every level of non-druid you take is a level away from your spellcasting progression.

As for healing, if all goes well, this may be the last in-game day of the current adventure. There may be an opportunity to get some more healing oriented items in the next adventure.

Also, when we are ready to start the next adventure, I will likely advertise for 1-2 new players – maybe we’ll end up with a full time warrior or healer.

Alright, Pelor it is.

Any chance we could waive the LG prereq of the Grey Guard? It's a cool class and its where I want to take Alton.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Mothman, if it is alright with you, I'll stick with Kajetan and try to develop him further. I know I'll regret leaving because you do run a great game. I was just having a bad two weeks, and I was afraid that I was not devoting the time to the game that it deserves. Man, I get so addicted to these things that I let myself get overwhelmed sometimes. I don't know how you do it with all the games that you are involved in. I am truly amazed. So if it is alright with you and Kajetan survives, I'll play a few more chapters and see how it goes. Sorry for my wishy-washyness sometimes.

Cheers

Spoiler:
No problem man, I completely understand. About a year and half ago I was ready to completely give up D&D, due to disappointment about not being able to schedule games due to RL commitments, and that this stuff was taking up more time than I htought was ideal. I’ve come around since then, and I (barely) am able to manage my time so that I can spend a lot of time on this and still get important real life things done! It’s a bit of a juggling act sometimes …
Anyway, glad to have you on board – I completely understand if there comes a time when you need to drop out, there will be no hard feelings – but until that time, it should be fun! (I hope).
For what it’s worth, the level of input you have on this game seems fine, neither excessive, but definitely not too little!

Arctaris - would you be able to post ALL the entry requirements for the Grey-gaurd for me so I can assess that?

On the one hand I think its somewhat reasonable for a paladin-type prestige class to be useable by the alternate paladin classes ... but on the other hand, I wonder if it is as applicable to a paladin of freedom?

It seems to me that they Grey guard gives the standard LG paladin a bit of flexibility in breaking the rules for the cause of law and good without needing atonement - how does this gel for you with a paladin of Freedom (who is kinda all about breaking the rules!)? What's your take?

Male to Charles, my favorite pizza shop Dork 10, Husband 5, Paizonite 5, Accountant 0, Self-Entertainer 12

Thanks Mothman!

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Grey Guard Prereqs
Lawful Good
Knowledge (Religion) 8 ranks, Sense Motive 4 ranks
Lay on Hands class feature
Must adhere to a code of conduct that prevents the character from performing evil acts.

I read the Grey Guard as less being about breaking rules and more about being allowed by their god/church to do whatever it takes for the greater good. Ends justify the means and all that.
If the Grey Guard thing doesn't work out there's another PrC called the Holy Liberator in the Complete Warrior that would also fit. Its based more around preserving freedom (which is what Alton will focus on). My preference is Grey Guard but Holy Liberator would be cool too.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

The last two requirements pretty much cover “paladin” (but still apply to paladin of freedom), so I think I can be convinced to waive the LG requirement. Note that given the skill requirements, the earliest point you could qualify for this class is 6th level (I think) … and you’ll pretty much need to spend all your skill points between now and then on religion and sense motive (given that you’ll need to be at least a 2nd level paladin to get the lay on hands requirement, and pali’s only get 2 skill points per level plus int)!

EDIT: Oh, and Arctaris, note that I do use favoured class / xp penalty rules (although these don't apply to PrCs) ... so you might not want too big a level difference between your paladin and swahbuckler levels.

Hey Arctaris and Twiceborn, did either of you still have a friend who might be interested in joining this game? And who would likely be able to post regularly and stick with it reasonably long term?
