This seems to make Quasit angry. Her face reddens noticeably and she crosses her arms defensively.

Her voice falters and chokes and she looks away, bleary-eyed and miserable.

"There's a smell when you burn a person, you know? This horrible, oily, meaty smell. Like a pig roast. I can't bear that, I just can't." She draws a sleeve across her eyes. "Not again."

Feeling sulky now, Quasit lets the others head down into the basement. She sits at the top of the steps, watching what happens below while keeping an eye on the main floor. She looks at the ratty bearskin rug. "We should burn you too, fella. Just to be safe." she grumbles bitterly.

Norgorber. Eek. That explains the traps at least.

Ibona makes her way downstairs with Findurel, keeping an eye on things as he heals the unconscious one, and untying the Lady.

The woman who was unconscious when you found her blinks and stirs. At first, her eyes are full of fear, but then she realizes that you don't look like her captors. "Hmmm, who are you? Where am I? Is Lady Argentea alright?"

Quasit listens to the conversation below, pulling her knees up to her chin and hugging her legs. She looks over at Alexia's corpse again, lying amid all the other bodies. She was relieved that they'd found the noblewoman, but it somehow all seemed too little and too late to really be satisfying. Then she blinks and frowns.

"Attacked by zombies? That's not what Yuln said." she murmurs to herself. Then she sighs and rubs her eyes with the heel of her palm. Then she rests her forehead in her palm and her thoughts begin to wander off. She was getting the itch again -- the itch to just pick up and run, to leave this place and try her luck in the next town. But she was tired of running, of never having a home, of being alone.

She stares at Alexia's face, and imagines it as a groaning zombie. Then she imagines herself lying there on the floor, motionless and cold. Then she thinks of Alexia last night, when the three of them drank their toast to Yu, her lovely face with its big eyes, so serious and graceful. And as she remembered it, the face she remembered went cold and pale with staring eyes, the words of the toast turning to a death rattle in her slender throat.

For what? Why was some sicko priest of Norgorber keeping a noblewoman hostage, and yet not demanding a ransom? She had half-imagined it might be some unrequited love story, but then why keep her tied up in a basement? And why take the other woman too? Plots and secrets, that was Norgorber all over. Maybe there was no sense to it at all.

No. There had to be some reason. It was something to do with the snow fairies and the ticklewyrms. And this weather. And Alexia would never know the answer now.

Suddenly she was aware that her hands were absolutely covered in her own blood still. Her clothes were still half soaked with it. She sighs again, secretly glad there was no mirror in this place. She probably looked like a maenad. Guilt hit the pit of her stomach for being alive. She didn't deserve it. She should never have even come into the building again, she should have just sniped from the windows.

"Well, that's you all over girl, never did a smart thing in your life." she grumbles. She goes back to silently staring at Alexia's face. That pretty face was going to rot now. Turn to bones and corruption. One minute she was alive, then the next minute she wasn't. She trifles with the notion... would she trade places, if she could? Could she be that noble?

Nah.

Fin turns to Lady Argentea. "How about you, m'lady...any idea who kidnapped you? Did anyone mention to you why you were kidnapped?"


"Yuln? He survived? He was part of the group who guarded Lade Argentea while some of us scouted. The zombies attacked us, I don't know who attacked her.

Ibona, after nearly dying, as well as seeing Alexia dead, stands guard. She still takes notes in her journal, but dosn't (as of now) directly question the two who were tied up. Instead, her spare focus is all about waiting for the next attack, and keeping vigilant for such an attack.

The Lady Malassene informs you that the bandits took her and raided her party, though she mentions that they were awaiting orders from someone or something else though unable to say who exactly. she tells you that part of the beings that attacked the camp were Winter-Touched Fey, and an Ice Mephit, and that she over-heard the bandits talking about Teb Knotten, like that was their leader, but she isn't exactly certain.

Lady Malassene is able to make it back to town on her own if provided with a bit of gear and supplies, though you are able to escort her back if you wish. I leave that up to the majority of the group

Bulvi takes some time to clean his blood stained skin with some snow from near the open window sill, the cold not seeming to bother him. He listens to the back and forth. He looks far more formidable with that cloak on. "Alright, I suggest we head back to town. That way we know Lady Malassene is alright and give Alexia a better resting place than here. I think people will agree that if we are moving away from the necromancer we don't have to worry as much about undead. We can sell off what gear we haven't a use for and pick up supplies."

Bulvi rings his hands and continues. "Anyone who wants to leave this there, no shame in it, everyone has fought bravely and with honor there's no denying that. Going back to your normal life. However it's clear that this Teb Knotten has combined bandits, fey, undead and other creatures into an effective raiding force. If enough are willing to go with me I say we follow that inner heroic idiot and take Teb Knotten's charismatic head from his neck. Not solely for any kind of revenge but to safeguard people from whatever he has planned next."

While Findurêl sees the wisdom in escorting the lady back to town and seeing Alexia properly buried, he knows that the tracks of the person/creature that fled the lodge will be long gone by the time they return...

He simply says, "I will continue the hunt with you, Bulvi..."

Sakitu moves slowly through the bodies, mostly in shock. Shock at the extreme carnage, shock at the pure evil of the situation, shock at Alexia's death, and even shock at the vivid reminder of her own mortality. Barely keeping her stomach contents under control she numbly follows the others as they inspect the bodies and find a trap door leading below the house.

She notices how upset Quasit is but only peripherally. She's still too overwhelmed, herself, with the events. She finds herself sitting on the floor next to the dark haired girl when she finally begins to come back to her senses.

"Oh. Quasit!," she says softly, "This is just awful. I don't know if I can bear it." She turns her vulpine face towards the girl, tears rimming her eyes and flowing down her face. "We have to make this worth it." Her voice trembles with emotion.

The movements of the people downstairs draw her attention. She listens to the discussion. When the question of whether or not to escort the lady comes up she blurts in, from the top of the stairs, "What? We're not going to let her try to walk back alone! After all of this?" She gestures to the floor of the room. "I don't care what any of you are doing," she stands up and looks to Quasit for support, "but I'm going to escort the lady back to town. And..." she stifles a cry. "And we're talking Alexia back with us."


Carianna stands and bows formally to Lady Argentea. "My Lady, I will see you safely back to town, in fulfillment of my promises to you. Then I must leave you to see that no one else will be harmed by these villains, if these good people will have my help. I also need to make the death of so many of my friends count for something."

Quasit nods glumly. "I'd hug you but I'm covered in 3 kinds of blood right now," she says. But she takes Sakitu's hand and holds it, and goes back to staring at Alexia's body.

"Two days ago, I didn't even know her. Or you. Or any of you. I don't even think she liked me very much. I don't know why this is bothering me so much really. But I feel like I've been socked in the gut, you know?"

She cocks her head and knits her brow, trying to tie her thoughts together into a bow.

"Just think of it. She was a sorcerer. She had the blood of dragons or genies or something in her! Can you imagine that? Well, maybe you can, Miss Amazing Fox Woman, but I'm just some stupid girl from the streets of Cassomir, so it's pretty incredible to me... I mean, you'd think the universe had something special planned for her, you know? But it all ended here. It makes you wonder about the gods. I mean... I never really believed too much in destiny, but I always thought some people were just... just lucky, you know? Too amazing to not go on to great things. That's kind of how I think of most of you guys in the Pathfinder Society. You're all, like, extraplanar wizards or witches from the underdark or some other crazy thing. And that's why you were all called on to do these special things. Life just had bigger things in store for someone like her. And yet there she lies. Turning cold as we sit here. It just... horrifies me, on some level. It shouldn't be that random and stupid." She shrugs lamely and looks away.

"We push back to the village, if we are lucky it will not snow overnight and we can still follow the tracks. Even if it does we managed to follow the trail here without too much bother. Our foe seems more interested in killing pursuers than hiding..."

Before the noblewoman and the other prisoner come up the steps from the basement, Quasit makes her way into the kitchen and does her best to clean herself up, getting blood off everything she can see. If there happens to be any food lying around, she also gobbles down a bit of that as well. Then she slips outside and heads to the stable to begin cinching saddles to the three horses.

Once the horses are ready, she comes back inside, gathers up the goodies found in the two chests, packs them into sacks (pillowcases if no sacks are available), and carries them out to the horses as well.

She seems intent on keeping busy, either to avoid talking to the Lady, or to avoid being the one to carry Alexia's corpse outside.

As the others discuss their commitment to continuing the hunt tomorrow, she is conspicuously quiet, as if she's not aware of the conversations.

While the others prepare for the trip back, Findurêl will check the tracks to get a gyst of the direction the escapee fled...he has no hope of the tracks being intact by the time they return...

Fin, there is no hope in catching the person, though the journal from Ten Penny's chest states that they were wanting to get away from this life, and you can figure that is who got away

you all make your way to town, with the Lady in tow and the body of your fallen comrade, and as before the Father of the local clergy offers to take care of her.

the Council expresses their sincere gratitude and offers 500 gold to the group which you can use to resupply before heading back out in the morning

Bulvi would have found a blanket, rug, carpet or curtain to wrap Alexia up in and carries her outside. There's not desire to do it but he suspects the reluctance of the others.

Selling Loot:

Breastplate (Bulvi Keeps), five sets of leather armor (Sell all 25gp), three sets of studded leather armor (Sell 37gp 5gp), a masterwork chain shirt (125gp), two light wooden shields (3gp), seven longswords (Bulvi keeps one. Sell six 45gp), two spears (Sell 2gp), a masterwork dagger (Quasit Keeps), and three light crossbows with a total of 25 bolts (Bulvi Keeps one and the bolts. Sell two 35gp).

On selling/splitting the loot, we also had the contents of the two chests we unlocked. They contained:

A gold ingot
A spyglass
A silver ring
3 tiger's eyes
A pair of lady's riding boots (Quasit snagged those!)
A silver dagger
Some scrolls (don't remember if we got around to identifying them before the Walking Dead episode)
A healer's kit
A pouch with 25 sp
A potion (again, don't remember what it was)

We also have 3 horses, that we may either wish to keep or sell.

When she is paid, Quasit will immediately buy herself a potion of Cure Light Wounds at the local temple (50g I think?). She'll also spend a few silver pieces to buy a new shirt since her current one is obviously ruined, and a few coppers to buy some hard candy, preferably something minty.

GM, how close are we to leveling? I sure wouldn't mind a few more hit points.

Ibona, ready to retire for the day, breaks out her Alchemy kit and crafts two extracts of True Strike.

You gain temporary, intuitive insight into the immediate future during your next attack. Your next single attack roll (if it is made before the end of the next round) gains a +20 insight bonus. Additionally, you are not affected by the miss chance that applies to attackers trying to strike a concealed target.

Then, she takes a good, long, look at the spellbook that was found to see if any more formulae could be added to her list. Finally, exhausted with the days excursion, she falls asleep at the desk, not even having the strength to even journal her last thoughts for the day.

Quasit returns to town with the group, saying very little to anyone, and avoiding the newcomers. She seems uncomfortable and awkward around the noblewoman, and seems a little afraid of Carianna. She eagerly accepts her payment on meeting with the Councilwoman, and then follows along as Alexia's corpse is delivered to the temple. She slips off to find an acolyte to sell her a healing potion, answering his queries about their adventures and why she looks like she's been in a battle with monosyllables and shrugs. She does not stay for Alexia's funeral service.

Instead she makes her way to a tailor's shop to buy herself a new shirt. She tries on 5 or 6 of them, bantering lightly and cheerfully with the artisan about the unseasonable weather, before picking out a nice mud brown linen shirt that goes nicely with her armor and her eyes. On the way out, she spots a jar of peppermint sticks and buys a few of those as well.

She makes her way back to the inn, and immediately tucks in to a big bowl of mystery stew and a mug of mulled wine, then makes her way upstairs to her room. There she settles down to repair her leather jerkin. The process takes her a couple of hours, and the sun is setting as she finishes. As she works, she mulls over the events of the day, as well as her options about what she'll do tomorrow. Still undecided when she finishes, she hangs up her jerkin, slips on her fancy new boots, pulls on her cloak, and goes for a long stroll around the town. She continues to ponder what she'll do, and every time she looks down at her new boots, she smiles a little, thinking to herself how marvelous they make her look. Soon she is whistling tunelessly and thinking entirely of other things.

It's well after dark when she returns to her room. She pulls off her boots and cloak and slips into bed, feeling very tired. But when she closes her eyes, the zombies rise from her unconscious mind and begin assaulting her anew. Again and again she experiences that claw surprising her from behind and ripping out her throat. After nearly dropping off three times, only to bolt back to consciousness in a cold sweat panic each time, Quasit slips out of her bed and makes her way silently to Sakitu, easily slipping past her lock. She kneels besides Sakitu's bed and gently nudges her awake.

"I can't sleep. I keep having nightmares about stupid zombies. Can I sleep with you tonight?"

After seeing Alexia to her final resting place and the funeral Bulvi trains for much of the evening, going over his forms and smoldering with rage over the events of the day. Yu died yesterday, Alexia died today... who would die while he stood vigil tomorrow?

As the sun sank below the horizon he went to his bed tired as he was to enjoy a night of restless slumber.

On the way back to town Sakitu vacillates between being overly talkative and remaining quiet. When they reach town she makes sure that arrangements for Alexia are being made then finds her way to the inn. Sometime later Bulvi stops by her room and offers her her portion of the gold from selling the items. She mutters a quiet "thanks" but stays in her room.

Towards evening she leaves the inn and wanders around town. Eventually she finds a small apothecary and purchases a small health potion. I think I'm going to need this, she says to herself.

On the way back to the inn she suddenly stops. A rich and tantalizing smell wafts on the breeze from a nearby food stall. Primal and instinctual sensations rush in as her nose twitches and draws in the intoxicating scent. Much more than just food. She smells rabbit. Roast rabbit. Despite the countless jokes about foxes and rabbits, she can't help herself. She nearly trips over her own feet racing to the vendor. The savory smell of spit roasted hare make her mouth water almost uncontrollably.

"I'll take one, no two, of those rabbits. Please." The vendor, noticing her vulpine features, smiles a knowing smile. "I can always count on a kitsune, or 5, to stop by my stall." The vendor is short and stocky and wears a greasy leather apron but he's friendly. He hands Sakitu two thick skewers, each with a brown and glistening roasted rabbit on it, while she hands him a few coins. "You gonna eat both of these yourself?" the man asks with a wink. Sakitu blushes and nods. "Well, I guess. I haven't eaten all day." She smiles broadly at the man and heads back towards the inn, a rabbit in each hand.

One rabbit is already picked clean by the time she arrives and the other is half gone. Inside, she heads straight to her room to finish off the second savory supper. Once done, she lays on her bed contentedly. A belly full of warm rabbit meat isn't going to bring her new found friends back, but it helps ease the pain. After a few moments she leans over to the stand next to her bed and blows out the candle. She pulls the bed's thick wool blanket up to her neck and within moments is soundly asleep.

A light tapping on her shoulder wakes her and she hears Quasit's voice. "What? Who's there?" she says groggily. It takes her a moment to discern Quasit's slender form kneeling next to the bed. "Quasit! What are you doing here?" Then her mind catches up with what she heard. "Oh! Nightmares. I'm sorry." She scoots over on the bed and flips back a corner of the blanket. She pats on the bed. "Of course. You can sleep here tonight."

Quasit quickly slides into the bed with a bashful smile. "Thanks... I'm sorry I woke you..."

She chews her lip as she looks into the kitsune's eyes from inches away, clearly debating whether to push her luck with further conversation. Not surprisingly, she continues.

"So... are you going to head back out into that forest tomorrow with the others? I mean, you're a Pathfinder, so I suppose you have to. It's kinda in your code, right? It's just... I'm... I'm not sure I'm cut out for this. I screwed up a lot today, and I nearly died twice. And I can live on what I made today for... gosh, weeks, if I don't lose it all in a dice game. Saki, it's weird, every bone in my body is telling me to cut and run here, but some part of me is telling me I can't go, and that I'd be failing myself somehow if I don't keep going. But that's dumb, right? I'm no hero. I don't have anything to prove here. This isn't about me at all! I'm just passing through this place. I don't even remember the NAME of this town. But for some reason I'm worried about letting you all down."

Quasit flops onto her back and looks at the ceiling.

"What should I do, Saki? What would you do in my place? Am I a coward if I just sleep in tomorrow, and eat a big breakfast in bed? If I don't face what's out there, am I gonna keep having nightmares? I've been wrestling with this all day since we found those poor women in the cellar. And I just keep going around and around."


Carianna makes sure her former employer is safe, and then spends the evening in the temple. She mourns for all her dead comrades, and even more for those who are worse than dead. She confirms her conclusion that she must investigate further. Those who rescued her from her bonds appear to be the best way to do so, so she makes a commitment in her own heart to stand by and protect these people to the best of her ability, even at the cost of her own life. Great One, bless my promise here. Give me strength to protect these new companions, and wisdom how to guide them in paths of goodness.

After her prayers, she makes sure her gear is all ready for travel the next day, and then sleeps soundly until morning.

Findurêl will pick up a masterwork backpack and restock his arrows while adding a quiver of silver arrows to boot. Afterwards he'll head to the pub, have a quiet meal, along with a couple of pints of wine reflecting on the past couple of days. Yu and Alexia killed, Quasit and Sakitu with multiple close calls and the newcomer Ibona nearly killed as well. Bulvi and he were pushed to the limit at the lodge, both wounded but able to make it through. He ponders for a while and shakes his head as he finishes off the last of the wine...

Fin mutters, "Long day...but life goes on...at least for another day, any way...wonder what the morrow holds..."

He rises, leaves a few coppers for the serving girl, and heads to his room for some much needed sleep...

As Quasit slides into the bed Sakitu starts to turn over and go back to sleep but then she senses that Quasit might need to talk. She turns to face her and her kitsune enhanced vision lets her make out Quasit's features by the faint moonlight coming through the room's small window. Clearly she is upset.

Sakitu listens as Quasit starts to unwind her feelings. When it seems that she has run out of steam Sakitu props herself up on an elbow.

"You know, I've only known you for a couple of days but in that time I think I've learned a lot about you. I think the most important thing I've seen is that you are a good person. Sure, you might not follow standard conventions, but you want to do the right thing." Sakitu turns onto her back, also staring at the ceiling.

"In fact, why are you asking these questions if it isn't because you want to do the right thing? See? And no, I don't think you'll keep having nightmares. I think you are resilient. The thoughts will pass." She pauses for a second. "In fact, I think it's good that you have the nightmares. It means that you care. You're not desensitized."

Sakitu pauses again, just to think. She remembers something that Quasit has said a couple of times. "By the way, I'm not a Pathfinder. I have some Pathfinder friends and I'm interested in the society but I've never really joined yet."

Still facing the ceiling, Quasit blinks a bit in surprise at this assessment of herself. She doesn't argue the point, in fact she finds it sort of nice to hear, but her knitted brow would show her skepticism.

"Huh. So you're a free range Amazing Fox Lady. Good, then we can talk about the Pathfinders behind their back. What a relief! Not right now though, I'm sure you want to sleep. I'll shut up and you can..."

Suddenly something catches Quasit's eye as her eyes wander about the room. She props herself up on her elbows. She squints in the dark, craning her neck toward a nearby table.

"Are... are those rabbit bones?"

The next morning Ibona wakes up early and heads down to the common room for breakfast. Not seeing anyone else from the party up and about yet, she makes her way to each room to wake them so they have an early start in the morning. At Sakitu's room no one answers, and the door is unlocked. Ibona opens it and finds it empty.
No big deal, she might be out in the outhouse, or bathhouse or something, I need to be sure to check them after I hit the last room.

Finally making her way to Quasit's room, no one answers when Ibona knocks on the door. Again, the door being unlocked, Ibona opens it up to find Quasit and Sakitu sleeping in the same bed. Closing the door quickly and quietly, Ibona heads downstairs to find others gathered at a table eating breakfast.

"You will never guess what I just saw" Ibona begins. "Sometime last night Sakitu joined Quasit in her room. They are currently sleeping together. Given what they have both faced over the last couple of days, I didn't have the heart to wake them up."

Findurêl shrugs. After swallowing a bite of eggs, he says, "No hurry, let 'em sleep...tracks will be gone...but I know the direction they were leading...we might find something...or we might not..."

At the mention of the rabbit bones Sakitu blushes a little and giggles. "Uh. Yeah. Somehow I can't really pass up a good roast rabbit. I know. It's kind of embarrassing. For someone like me. You know."

After a few more minutes Sakitu drifts off to sleep. Maybe due to Quasit's rhythmic breathing near her, or maybe due to the satisfying meal, but in any case, she sleeps more soundly than she has in a long time.


Carianna approaches the group hesitantly. She is still not sure if she is welcome to accompany them. She looks around, hoping to see a friendly face, afraid she will instead see hostility or blame. If I had done my job, they would never have had to come to the rescue, and two of their friends would still be alive. If I had done my job, my friends would still be alive, too...

Ibona waves Carianna over to the table where most everyone else has gathered (who has arose).

"I never really introduced myself yesterday, and with everything going on, I might as well. Ibona Perharice." She offers her hand to Carianna. "So, what happened to you? How did you get taken alive?"

in the morning after returning to town, and getting what was hopefully a good sleep, you all get your food, and things together and started to head out, along the way its fairly easy to get back to the lodge with little issue with the slight sting from the weather nothing too cold.

as you come up to the area with the bridge, A bridge made of rope and wooden planks spans a narrow ravine. It’s already covered in ice and snow, and it sways alarmingly in the icy winds blowing through the gorge. The turbulent waters of a fast-moving creek surge through a couple of waterfalls far below.
