"Well, well, looks like our evil cleric had a few skeletons in his closet," says Quasit as she flips her sword back and forth between her hands, staring down the only other combatant she's aware of.
She addresses the undead. "What's the matter, Chuckles? Sent you and your friend off to bed without dinner?...For a few weeks in a row?"
Sakitu |
"I can't see what's up there. You guys are in the way." Sakitu sees Quasit disappear in the room and a short moment later there is an explosion. Sakitu feels a blast of cold air shoot out of the room and down the stairs. "Whoa! Glad I wasn't in there." Ibona is directly ahead of her on the stairs and Bulvi is next. She leans forward, past Ibona and touches Bulvi. After a quick utterance she says, "Bulvi, I cast a resistance spell on you. You should be a little more safe around these creatures."
No move action, just a standard to cast resistance on Bulvi.

however as it becomes Findurels turn he starts to notice an unerring cold coming off the creature taking Cold: 1d6 ⇒ 4 damage

though Ibona now seeing the creatures on the ground floor, can tell you they have a cold aura, they explode when they die, best to bludgeon the the bones, or burn them

Once the group gets upstairs to ID
"What are those things?"
Knowledge(Religion): 1d20 + 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (20) + (5) + 10 = 35
Bulvi |
Bulvi not knowing about the reanimation downstairs yet decides to strike at his foe. He brings down his weapon at his icy enemy. "Thanks Sakitu. See skeletons are far less creepy! One's already down, we should make short work of the remaining one together."
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
He will strike out with his cold iron longsword unless someone advises him to use bludgeoning in which case he will drop his longsword and draw his cold iron warhammer. Reduce his attack roll by one if the warhammer.
If someone lets him know there are more downstairs after his attack he will provoke an attack of opportunity and move back down the stairs past Alexia.
Findurêl |
Fin will make an acrobatic move past the skeleton, 15' SW into the room...
Acrobatics: 1d19 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
...and fire a blunt arrow at the skeleton...
Longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Anyone got an exit strategy? If these things have 2 attacks and automatically do 1d6 damage when next to one of us, don't think we'll last long...
Bulvi |
Bulvi has a good AC and cold resistance 2. I suspect he'll be a pain for our frost skeletons to hit with the claw attacks. The cold damage will be reduce a little but that's the main threat to him. If he is told about more being downstairs he can bottle neck them hopefully as long as someone is using a wand of cure light wounds on him he can tank them. He can probably position to only be under attack by one or two of them. If he withdraws up the stairs he can definitely get it to one but that reduces party members on the stairs dealing out the pain.
Our main ranged members of the group can use the elevation of the stairs to get shots off at the enemies. Pour in the fire as best can be done at this stage.
It's risky still and puts Bulvi out there but it mitigates the risk to a degree and he's the best for taking the kind of damage they are putting out...
I don't think we are going to be able to pull off an exit safely. Downstairs is no go and even if we can escape from a window upstairs unless we do something cunning if we get outside it just means they can bring their numbers to bare.
...anyone else worried about the different critter with a black background downstairs?
Quasit* |
Anyone got an exit strategy? If these things have 2 attacks and automatically do 1d6 damage when next to one of us, don't think we'll last long...
I was hoping one of the mage types had a Burning Hands or two. I can lob alchemist fires. Too bad we don't have a cleric. A couple strong positive channels would clear the room.
I think if we bottleneck ourselves on the stairs, that evil cleric is going to get away. It must be him that just animated all those corpses. Although if he's powerful enough to be animating variant undead, I'm kinda worried about fighting him.
Findurêl |
Bulvi's idea sounds good to me...he bottlenecks the stairs, Ibona behind him with a CLW wand, me behind her firing arrows...Quasit could either be behind me tossing alch fire or try to climb out a window and cut off the evil cleric's escape...this is lookin' like a Game of Thrones episode...
Alexia Turina |
Alexia is out of spells, but has a few uses of elemental ray left. After that, she has magic missile scrolls.
Alex moves into the room to have a clearer shot, and then sends a firey ray at one of the skeletons.

"Guys, there are a bunch of undead here!"
Sakitu |
Wow. Lots of skeleton things. I like Bulvi's idea too. Quasit and Findurel finish off the skeleton upstairs then the rest of us pack in there. We'll force the skeletons to come at us one at a time. At this point I'm more concerned with surviving that making sure we find the evil cleric. I've got a bow and can add frost damage to it 7 times. The arrows might not pass the DR that skeletons normally have but would the frost damage?
GM Sapphire Fox |
Ibona I didn't miss your roll, I just gave you everything they had in my previous post

I was afraid of that. My shortbow dmg is 1d6-1 and I'm guessing DR is 5. And immune to cold. I assume my ray of frost will be just as ineffective. The result is that I can't do much damage... :-)
Bulvi |
As he reaches the bottom of the stairs rushing past the others his eyes go wide unable to get before Alexia. "There's too many to fight like this. Pull back, we can make their numbers mean little if I can hold them on the stairs!"
Maybe our rash sorceress will reconsider soon enough but that's as far down the stairs as Bulvi can get after the swing. Sadly sometimes sticking to your character can be mean not going for optimal tactics.
Edit
@GM Sapphire Fox Bulvi provoked an attack of opportunity from the one remaining upstairs.
@Sakitu Why is the damage for the shortbow getting reduced by one, unless it's composite I didn't think your strength came into it.

Ibona stows her journal and takes out her Gladius and Wand, and then moves to the bottom of the stairs to assist where needed.

As the blast of cold air washes over her, Quasit stumbles back awkwardly, turning her head and bearing the force of the explosion like a person getting hit with an ocean wave. Afterwards her entire body is covered in a patina of rime, and ice hangs from her rumpled hair.
"OK, you had that coming..." she says to herself ruefully. "Mental note -- don't tease the exploding undead."
Bulvi |
Alright so since I didn't use the standard action I'll move him a little further to cut off ones coming around the fireplace on one side at least
Sakitu |
The shortbow dmg is -1 because my strength is so low. Even though it's not a composite bow, negative STR modifiers are added (subtracted) from the 1d6. I know. It's not fair.
Quasit* |
"Guys, there are a bunch of undead here!"
Quasit, who moments before had been thinking the fight was over, now pales and looks in shock toward the stairs, where Bulvi is running off to face new foes. She catches Findurel's eye as if to ask him if it's true, then looks down at the ground.
"The cleric... he's still here..." she murmurs to herself. She glances toward the bodies on the floor, then the window beside her, then the stairs, then Findurel, then back to the window. She chews her lip, then looks back toward Findurel again.
"Help them. I'm gonna try something."
She turns, unlatches the window, opens it, then climbs out feet first and hangs a jump down to the ground...

Murderous Command - You give the target a mental urge to kill its nearest ally, which it obeys to the best of its ability. The target attacks its nearest ally on its next turn with a melee weapon or natural weapon. If necessary, it moves to or charges to the nearest ally in order to make this attack. If it is unable to reach its closest ally on its next turn, the target uses its turn to get as close as possible to the ally.
