No problem!
new to PbP
There aren't any exact instructions but it won't be difficult so don't worry. For an idea of what to expect here is a little preview, This campaign is a pretty good example of what the format will look like.
I'll be using a database that generates the template for the game and I will be making posts with the blessing deck information, locations, cards, etc. The cards will be behind spoiler tags so when it is your turn you'll be able to freely explore by looking at the next card in your location and carry out your turn like normal.
The second part of the game is going to be run by a google sheet that I will share with you. This will have your character and deck info in it and will give you a template to copy into your notes. If you look at that thread then youll notice the players have at the bottom of their post text with what's in their hand. That's all managed by the google sheet and it'll make more sense once we get closer to starting and I've sent that out to everyone.
Only new thing you might need to learn is how to use the out of character (ooc) or diceroll functions. When you make a post there is a "how to format your text" button to help with this.
here is an out of character message, used for questions or comments of future strategy. stuff like that
this is a test roll: 1d6 ⇒ 3
new to Organized play
The organized play guide can be found here.
The biggest change you will find is that boons (Weapons, spells, armor, etc) are not added to your decks like normal. Instead, at the end of each scenario we'll take any acquired cards and list them out by their card type and adventure deck level.
For example we may have acquired
Armor B
Weapon 1
Spell 5
Blessing 2
etc
Then, each character picks one card to use as a deck upgrade but we can't have multiple people pick the same card. We'll do a rolloff if multiple people want the same card. Once everyone has decided their deck upgrade then they can replace one card in their deck with one card from their blessing deck of that same (or lower) level. So if I got a Weapon 1 upgrade I could replace a weapon with one of my weapons of Adventure Deck 1 or lower in my class deck. This is meant so that in a physical setting you could take your deck anywhere and you're not pulling cards out of the box and keeping them forever.
I'll help out with how that whole process works once we finish the first scenario. There aren't a lot of other changes with organized play that will run into immediately. I guess one caveat is that organized play does go by the perma-death rule so just make sure you're not going reckless expecting free revives like in a home-game where you houseruled against perma-death.

GM redeux |

Made a typo in that last comment. 2nd to last paragraph when talking about upgrades: "Once everyone has decided their deck upgrade then they can replace one card in their deck with one card from their class deck of that same (or lower) level. So if I got a Weapon 1 upgrade I could replace a weapon with one of my weapons of Adventure Deck 1 or lower in my class deck"
Which is one other thing: paizo forum posts are locked after 1 hour to prevent modifying posts that have generated discussion.

GM redeux |

Hey All!! So we're less than a week away!
The event will run from March 5 - April 30. Past that will be optional (I will most likely be willing to continue for any interested players, though this will not be required).
This will be a bit long, but i ask everyone bear with me. Please read each section to make sure we're all on the same page and ready to go next week!
#1 - Verification
For online play we need verification that you own the class decks if you haven't done so already. Please write your PFS number on a piece of paper and take a picture with the class deck. Then send to cartmanbeck@orgplayonline.com (this is our Venture Captain).
#2 - Check in
Most of you have checked in already. I am waiting on one more to check-in on the forums here. They'll be given 3 days from my PM to respond and check-in on the forums before I open their seat for another player. If any of you have changed your minds about playing, then please let me know and we'll remove you with no hard feelings!
#3 - Posting expectations
I ask that everyone be able to post within a 24 hour period of it being their turn. There is some leniency with this when communicated in advance, but that is just the general guideline.
#4 - PFS guide
if you haven't already, please read through the PFS guide located here. We'll be following the organized play rules from this guide. For the most part things play similarly but deck upgrades are a bit different which I've highlighted above. I'll be helping everyone as we go but I still think it will be useful to read through the guide.
#5 - Deck Handlers
I'll be sending each of you your Deck Handler spreadsheet based off of which character you said you were playing. YOU CAN STILL CHANGE YOUR CHARACTER. If you changed your mind on which character you are using then that is OK. Just update the deck handler or let me know.
For each deck handler you'll see the first sheet has a bunch of columns and then on the right hand side there is a box to draw or get a random card from discard. Put a "1" in that yellow box to draw or get a random card from discard. If you are drawing, then Type the name of the card exactly into your hand.
When using cards, you must either type them in exactly into the appropriate column (such as discard, or recharge). Alternatively you can COPY and use CTRL+SHIFT+V. DO NOT USE CTRL+V. Doing a normal copy will mess up the hidden spreadsheet functions and result in breaking the deck handler.
The next section is on the bottom half where there is a grayish box where you can type in notes. Feel free to communicate with other players what cards are available for use, or any other notes you feel are worthwhile.
The next section has all of your skill and power feats. Please double check that I entered these correctly!
When you are making posts you will select those liness from the blueish fields all the way down to the bottom blue field. You'll then Copy and paste all of that into the bottom of your post once you've reset your hand. It will look something like this:
Hand: Cure, Detect Magic, Immolate, Torch,
Displayed:
Deck: 11 Discard: 0 Buried: 0
Notes:
DEXTERITY d8 []+1[]+2 []+3 []+4
Melee: Dexterity +1

INTELLIGENCE d6 []+1 []+2
WISDOM d8 []+1 []+2 []+3 []+4
Divine: Wisdom +2
CHARISMA d6 []+1 []+2
Survival: Charisma +3
Hand Size 4 []5

Powers:
When you encounter a card, you may display a boon that has the Divine trait( [] and you may recharge a card displayed by this power to evade your encounter). While displayed, your Constitution and Dexterity dice are d12, and you may play only boons that have the Goblin, Melee, Poison, or Vermin ( [] or Divine) trait; add the Vermin trait to your checks. At the end of any encounter, you may recharge all displayed by this power.
When you attempt a check that invokes the Poison, Swarm, or Vermin trait, add 1d6 ( [] and before the roll, you may draw a card).
Buggy wuggy, creepy crawler,
Cutey sluggy bites a brawler.
Skitter, jitter, hurry scurry,
In a fit of buggy fury.
Shower folk in worms exotic
In a joke so arthropodic.
Ha! The bigguns leapin' so
When 'ere comes a Reepazo!"
-Reepazo's song
5b - Deck construction
Second part of the deck handler will have your deck info. Click on the 2nd sheet titled "Deck List" and populate your decklist using the example list in there. Your deck obviously still must follow the rules of what card feats your character has, and follow the card hierarchy (generally you can only had basic cards at this point). Let me know if you have questions on how to build your deck for your character. Also VERY important - Do not type in the same name twice!!. You'll notice in the example decklist provided I put "BotGobs 1" and "BotGobs 2" this is so the spreadsheet knows they are separate cards. It will mess up if you put two copies of the same card using the same name.
#6 - Discussion board vs hangouts
In my initial PM's to each of you i discussed the possibility of using a hangouts for strategy. I am still waiting back from some players their opinion on this. If anyone says no then that is OK, we will instead use the discussion forum for strategizing and I will keep that/those individual(s) anonymous. I merely suggest this hangout because it has been very useful in one of my ongoing campaigns. If we do go this route then I will send a hangout invite to each of you. Stay tuned to see which route we go.
#7 - Paizo Campaign Tools
This isn't required but I found it useful so just as a heads up if you don't already know--- There is a "Paizo Campaign Tools" extension for both Chrome and Firefox. What this does is let you set your default alias for individual campaigns. It also makes your Campaigns tab easier to read. I recommend clicking on your alias and going to your "Campaign" tab and bookmarking it. That is a good way to see when you have new posts.
#8 - Timezone and posting availability
My last outstanding item is what Timezone are each of you in? And what is your general availability to post? I ask because I'd like to try to make the turnorder based off of availability to minimize delays. Let me know below!
#9 - Questions
I think that about covers it. If you have any outstanding questions then please let me know either on the discussion boards or via PM.
Thanks for bearing with me and reading that. I'm super excited to get this kicked off and I promise it'll be more fun once we get started!! Cheers,
Redeux

Not sure if you have made them yet but mine is already made and in the tagline.
I'm fine with Paizo and/or Hangouts.
I am in Central Time and am available after 2:00PM most days. I can usually do one post before work at 5:00AM.

GM redeux |

I did create the deck handlers for each of you and sent them out last night to the e-mails you provided me, but if you already created one for yourself then that is OK. Just make sure that it is linked under your alias profile. This can be done in your tagline or the "about me" section. As long as I have access to view it we'll be OK. And as always, let me know if you need help with this and I'll be happy to help out!

GM redeux |

Excellent guys! So I've posted the first scenario for us to be ready to start in a few days.
Feel free to pick your starting locations and THEN draw your starting hand using the deck handler. Post both the starting location and your hand in the gameplay section of the forum. Make sure to use your character alias (I can help you set one up if you don't know how).
It seems everyone is OK with using hangouts to discuss strategy but I do agree it might be beneficial to have some strategy discussion here first for any lurkers. Let's try keeping strategy discussion here for at least one scenario. Eventually there are some henchman that will require a great deal of team effort due to multiple checks so hangouts would probably be easier to coordinate those but in the mean time we should be OK here.
During the campaign when a specific henchman needs to be summoned, I'll be listing that at the top of the gameplay thread under the campaign header. I have done this for the corrupted soldier from the Guardpost. As we come across more, I'll continually add more. I've also added the Location Abyssal Rift since it is unique and it flips each time someone ends their turn there, or if it is unoccupied it will flip to it's starting side.
I am GMT-5 timezone. I work from home and am generally available, though this is busy season of work for me through mid April.
One note: I suggested the Paizo campaign tools. This normally works great, but the website was updated last night so the default alias function is currently not working with this add-in. Just make sure to double check who you're posting as. I'm sure the extension will be updated again so that it is working properly.
And Glynixx, just let me know when you settle on a character from the ranger class deck. I will then e-mail you the deck handler to the e-mail you provided.
As always, let me know if you have questions. Cheers!

EmpTyger |

I don't see any issue with Nyctessa starting at the Abyssal Rift- that way she can also try to acquire some spells. Also if she starts at the Guardpost she'll have to begin by fighting a Corrupted Soldier, although maybe that's a good thing, considering her first power?
Also, is that neat "Deck Handler" link for Nyctessa automatically added somehow? Or did you add that in manually?

GM redeux |

EmpTyger - Click on your name and then the "alias" tab. Then click the alias you want to update (Or you can skip all that by clicking on a post you made as the alias).
Once you're at the alias page there is an "Edit my profile" button. Click that. Then add the link to the "Class/Levels" stat, Hit save and you're done!
And check out the "How to format your text" link at the bottom of any post to see how to format a URL link.

![]() |

Yeah, between the spells and monsters is why I was thinking of starting there. Just didn't know if it was a weird place with the whole not closing.
Like GM Redeux said I added into that field with the URL link text. I like having it easy to access.

GM redeux |

Yeah, so Abyssal Rift can be a bit tricky. I don't think there is anything wrong starting there, but just so everyone is on the same page--- read this post on it *link* and this post *link*
Here's a few clarifications from that thread:
1. The card will flip each time someone ends their turn there. It will also flip to the "always open" side if it is left unoccupied.
2. The location can never be permanently closed. Unfortunately this means that if you defeat a henchman that allows you to do a close check then there is no check to attempt and you do not get to search through the location deck for the villain, nor do you get to banish any other cards in the location deck. This also applies for when you defeat the villain there--no cards are banished from the location deck.
3. If someone encounters the villain at a location other than the abyssal rift, you can do a temp close by burying a blessing to flip it to the "always temp closed" side. If no one is at the abyssal rift then the location would be considered always open and the villain would have a chance to escape there
4. If you encounter the villain at the abyssal rift and all other locations are permanently closed or temp closed, the only way to win the game would be if the abyssal rift is already on the "always temp closed" side. If it is on the "always temp closed" side and you defeated the villain--you'd win. If it is on the "always open" side then the villain could escape to the abyssal plane and you'd have to try to encounter the villain again...when the location is "always temp closed"
I wouldn't worry about this too much, I'll help keep track of it and let you guys know whats going on. It is obviously very ideal though if you are able to scout the villain ahead of time and make sure that abyssal rift is occupied and whomever is there is able to bury a blessing to flip it to the "always temp closed" side.

GM redeux |

Hi all,
We're almost ready to get started!
I am still waiting to hear back from Glynixx on their final character selection. I'll shoot them a reminder and then tomorrow night I'll do an update in the gameplay thread with the full scenario listing so we can get started.
Cheers!

GM redeux |

First scenario is up! Amaryllis is starting!
Biggest thing I ask is that when making dice rolls please format it like this
Cure DC 6 divine: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 failed to acquire
This lets me see what the card is, the difficulty (DC), and the type of check you are performing. It makes it very easy for us to tell if you pass or fail.
Also i highly recommend using BOLD when you mention another players name that needs their attention. So, for example, if someone has notes that says you can use their blessing. Please do something like this: using Uliah's blessing of ____. That way they don't miss it and use the same card on their turn.
Best of luck!

Glynixx |
Sorry redeux- I didn't see this until after I made my post. I'll try to edit in your preferred formatting now.
Good evening!
I am going to go with Harsk :)This is my first play by post so I do not know everything (or anything lol) that I need to do.
Sorry for the late post!

GM redeux |

No problem Glynixx. Just so everyone is aware, Glynixx selected the WOTR version of Harsk.
For everyone, I forgot to say earlier --
If you need to contact me, please feel free through any of the following (in order of responsiveness):
Hangouts - am.fear.liath.mor1@gmail.com
Paizo Campaign or discussion post
Paizo private messages
Email - same email as above (notifications don't work the best so I usually see this last of the other methods).
If it's a question that comes up mid-turn, then feel free to stop your post where you're at and just ask your question there, or make note that you are asking GM a question. You can also do the same if you need to ask the party a question such as "Uliah - Can i use your blessing for this barrier?"

GM redeux |

Just a heads up everyone - Glynixx had to ask a question yesterday and I didn't answer until late at night. They're very new to PbP and the paizo forums so we're going to have a bit of patience at the start while they learn. They're aware that checking once every 24 hours is still expected so I'm hoping once they get caught up to speed we'll be posting more regularly.

Glynixx |
Hi Everyone! I am here. I am usually on around 9 pm or so EST after I get the kids ready to bed. I am going to re-read the gameplay thread now to catch up but I am going to need someone to hold my hand for this first play thru I think. I will post back here in a few minutes. Wish me luck!

Glynixx |
Good luck! Let me know if you have questions! I'll be sporadically checking throughout the night. Anyone else is also welcome to answer questions if I'm out walking the dogs or something.
Ok great! I have questions! Am I supposed to select a card from the Wounded Lands? Can you walk me thru this first turn? I have never played by post or via the board game, only thru the app. If I become a burden, feel free to switch me out and maybe I can shadow someone? I don't want to slow up the game for the rest of the group.
Do i go against the top card and then play my deck against it?

![]() |

Hi Glynixx,
As you can see, all the locations have their cards as spoiler tags. When you explore in your turn, simply click the "Spoiler" button and see what card you are encountering, then make your post explaining what you do during the encounter.
A lot of the time, it is as simple as saying "My characters rolls X to defeat/acquire" and you use the [dice] command to do so (see the "How to format your text" guide below the post area).
If you want to use any powers your character has or play a card to modify your roll, then just say you will be using it in your post and then modify your deck handler accordingly (such as by putting cards in discard, recharging cards, displaying cards, etc.)
When you are done with your turn, simply grab the text in cells A32 through A56 and paste it at the end of your post.
As a note, if you are using the [dice] command and would like to see what the dice result is before you post (as when you want to do something after your encounter or to see if you took damage, etc), you can click the Preview button, which will show the result of the roll. It also helps so that you can check formatting beforehand and what not.

Thank you so much Akaitora! redeux was kind of enough to also do quick skype session w/ me so I was able to get my post in. I was on last night but didn't know i was to post- sorry! Hopefully I can get a hang of this quickly and add some value to the team!

GM redeux |

Hey guys, I mean to post this at the start of the scenario but forgot. Here are villain/henchman cards. I am putting these behind spoiler tags since some people like to go into things blind. So if you like to know what is coming, please feel free to look, but don't openly discuss it until it comes up in the game. Unless, of course, all of you agree you don't care if it gets spoiled.

The difficulty of checks against the Fiendish Minotaur is increased by twice the scenario's adventure deck number. Add 3 to your checks against this henchman if you succeed at an Intelligence or Knowledge 7 check, or if the check has the Acid, Electricity, or Force trait.
Before you act, if this is your first exploration of the turn, the Fiendish Minotaur deals you 1d4-1 Combat damage.
If defeated, you may immediately attempt to close the location this henchman came from.
Also, Great job Glynixx on your first turn! And thank you everyone for having patience as he learns!

Alright. I don't mind giving a blessing and remember it will give you 1d12 due to where I am at.
Question, can Channel Corruption target the Active blessing on the deck? If so I can use that and the blessing of Deskari to give you 2d12 to your combat.
For reference:
Display this card and choose a card; while this card is displayed, that card gains the Corrupted trait.

![]() |

Yeah, it is placed on top of the discard pile face up so I wasn't sure if it could be targeted with a spell. I think we have a good chance without the extra d12 but it wouldn't hurt.
Either way for Uliah:
I will use Black Spot to reduce the check by 1+Deck Number.
I will use Channel Corruption (if legal) to make the current blessing corrupt.
I will use Blessing of Deskari to add 1d12 (or 2d12 if Channel Corruption was used.)
Probably heading to bed soon but will roll my recharges and combat in the morning depending on above actions.

EmpTyger |

I think that that Channel Corruption trick works... but I misread the card the first time I tried to think it through, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!
Also, regarding the Fiendish Trees: remember that anyone other than Amaryllis has the option to discard a card and bury another card to evade to the Forsaken Cloister. So if you have no way of preventing the ranged damage, and would be discarding 2 cards anyway, this may be a better option than facing the Combat 15.

![]() |

That 15 is such a high number but I want a zombie tree, lol.
Now that I see my only attack option can't hurt the tree I will definitely be evading as well.

![]() |

Oh that was a rule I had overlooked. Looking it up in my Rulebook it mentions one of each type of boon per check. Being that Channel Corruption is't affecting the check but rather a separate action I feel it would be fine. Much like using 2 Cures in a turn but I am looking at an old rulebook, it may have changed.
In the case it wasn't legal I would opt for the Channel over the Black Spot as likely to get a bigger bonus from an extra 1d10 than just -2 to check.
Sorry about that. I will make some adjustments. I have to take some time to re-learn all the rules since it has been so long since I played last.

GM redeux |

Hey guys, just getting back from a concert and a bit short on time. To clear a few things up:
1. Channel corruption *can* be used on the top card of the discard pile *But*...
2. Note that during an encounter you may only play cards or use powers that relate to each step (or relate to cards/powers played during that step). This is a bit tricky. Channel corruption in this case is impacting a card that you are not playing during this step (it is impacting another card that is not being played). If you were playing channel corruption to add/ignore the corrupted trait on the blessing you play, that would be legit. If you wanted to use it on the blessing discard pile you would have had to use it at the start of the turn or before the card was encountered, since once you are encountering the card then you're limited on what cards you can play. This is why channel corruption is a "display this card until end of turn"
3. You may only play one card of each type during each step. This rule doesn't care about whether or not a card impacts the check or the not. So Channel corruption and Black spot would not be able to be played together
Here's a bit of the rules
Encountering a Card
When you encounter a card, you—and only you—can go through
the following steps. No one else can perform these steps for you,
though others might be able to play cards to help you deal with the
encounter’s challenges. During each of these steps, characters may
perform only the specified actions. Characters may only play cards
or use powers that relate to each step (or relate to cards played or
powers used in that step). Each character may play no more than 1
card of each type during each step; for example, a character may play
no more than 1 blessing while attempting a check, though multiple
characters could each play 1 blessing. A character may not activate a
given power more than once during each step, other than effects that
can be used each time something particular happens. Characters may
not play any cards or activate any powers between these steps.
In short, you can only use black spot in this encounter.

![]() |

Ah okay so it was updated with the later Rulebooks which actually makes more sense when reading it. That is good to know and I will actually dig my MM rulebook out of the game room tomorrow, just had the RotR one nearby.
I will do the bookkeeping on the cards for my sheet and post the update.
The rules can get pretty complex which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It gives depth to the game.
