Bhoors clutches his necklace in horror when the spell is set off on the hanerchief and mutters a prayer, "Tymora watch over me." He looks at the rag as if Hell itself will come forth from it. "You've done it now."
When the clipboard approaches Bhoors looks up and nods, "Yes of course, Tarenbiril. That's TARenbiri'l t-a-r-en-b-i-r-il."

His mates just laugh a hearty har-har-har and fwap him on the back of the skull "...didn't you always say you wanted to date a witch, Sisco? Well, looks like you got yer chance...c'mon you idiot, you can clean the stables while us uncursed ones race..."
Meanwhile Bhoors deals with the official "Alright...interesting, new racers are common but a new sponsor is quite notable! I suppose you will need a rundown of the rules..."
So, as stated its first across finish. There are 4 actions you can take during the race in addition to RP creativity. The race will be run without a map/grid, hopefully I can track it easily in a small table. Basically, there are a certain number of positions to advance. Dash, Jab, Taunt and Trip are the possible actions:
Dash: Animal Handling related check that moves you two positions ahead. Can be used twice per race, not counting failed attempts.
Jab: Attack roll using special racing pole (stick) vs AC. On a hit, no damage, but Dex save or fall from the mount. Jab can only be used on racers who share the same position number.
Taunt: Intimidation vs Insight contested. Loser gets disadvantage on actions. Can be used on any adjacent (position wise) rider.
Trip: Athletics or Acrobatics check. Fail means rider stumbles and loses position.
Finally, there will be some surprise obstacles thrown out. Inspiration can be spent to instantly avoid these.
"...yes, I think that just about covers it. You are slated to face off against the Green Vipers in just a few minutes!"
Please fire away if you have more questions before we start. Also, now would be the time for any further shenanigans.

The dinosaur you get was put in a cage for you by the mysterious sponsor, but OOC you guys can choose if you care. If not, I'll assume young allosaurus. Other typical ones according to Tome of Annihilation for racing are: deinonychus, dimetredon, hadrosaurus, young triceratops, or young tyrannosaurus rex. They have all had their mouths muzzles and claws blunted, and were trained for this since birth.

Ah I just remembered that since SCAG is my +1, I probably don't get most of these dinos as wild shape options even if I see them, correct?
Nella walks up to her mount, a young triceratops, and strokes its face soothingly around the muzzle. She checks the saddle and kit, ensuring she is prepared for the race.

Davin, no worries I thought it might be confusing. Everyone will take part and race at the same time. Each PC has their own dinosaur. Currently, just lining up and the race is about ready to begin. You can pick your dinosaur or I will, was just waiting on a little RP between rider and mount before getting started.

A mild chuckle escapes Shaldinari as the racer is dragged off by his companions, she then focuses her attention on the official and the trainers as she looks over the potential mounts.
"My such magnificent creatures." She says to one of the handlers. "Tell me, what do they normally eat when they are in the wild? Meat, plants, fruits? Do they have a favorite treat here in the stables?" She offers a warm friendly smile to the man as she stops to watch a feathered deinonychus, "I've seen little ones hatching from eggs, but I've know idea what feed them."
Giving the creature a reassuring scratch, she takes the reins. "Now what's your name friend? How would you like to win a nice prize today?" She says while continuing to scratch the dinosaur and getting it used to her presence.

Davin looks over the mounts that have been supplied to their group. Not knowing much about such creatures, he pics one that looks both sturdy and swift. A particularly rough allosaurus catches his eye, and he moves over to claim the beast as his mount.

Bhoors looks over the creatures. He looks for one that looks fast. He also studies the keepers around the creatures to get a feel as to which creatures might be the most disagreeable.
Insight: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Bhoors looks at the creatures and figures the agility and gait of the deinonychus is the way to go. He moves to the creature acting as he has seen others familar with the creatures do. He pats it gently. "I'm about to bet it you little one. I am gonna hang on. You get to run free." He turns to the handler, "This one got a name."
Bhoors mounts up and gets used to sitting in the saddle, I am not sure attempting a race as my first ride on a strange exotic creature is the wisest. Fortune and Glory? He moves about and looks at the others, "To Fortune and Glory."

Shal, the creature roughly has the personality of an ostrich, flickering its gaze here and there. The handler answers "Oy, that one's called Sir Barton. Noble sort, he." he winks. "Make no mistake, he'd take an arm off without that muzzle. Meatgrinder!"
Nella, no sign of funny stuff with the saddle.
Bhoors, the handler responds "Aye, that's one o' Banana Candy's brood, we been calling her Apple Candy." Banana Candy is a somewhat famous racer and you've probably heard the name dropped before or read it in a pamphlet.
As the race is about to begin, clusters of gamblers start auctioning off their bets and collecting.
A massive crowd lines the narrow racing strip, which is roughly about 10 feet down from the streets above, they cheer and curse and point in absolute glee. A procession of acolytes from various faiths slowly crosses the starting line, blessing each dinosaur in turn with oily brass censors (causing one to sneeze snottily) and offering odd hand gestures. The Green Vipers are psyching themselves up, beating their chests for the crowd.
What looks like a 6 year old half orc girl passes up a thin riding pole to each of you sweetly. "Riders on your mark!"
Oh s&+&, this is really happening. I can ride a dinosaur, right?
"Set!"
The dinosaurs lower their hauches, ready to pounce as trained. The sudden drop is a bit startling, and your knuckles go white on the reigns...

Everyone starts at position 1. First to position 5 wins. I'll post the obstacles in a spoiler so you can react to them with preview instead of waiting on me. Its just a straight d20 rolled each turn after your action. So in short, do a Jab, Dash, Trip, or Taunt and roll d20 for obstacle. Reminder: inspiration auto succeeds any obstacle.
d20 Roll Obstacle Encountered
1-2 Blockade. A short wall of wood and debris
blocks your path. Make a DC 12 Wisdom
(Animal Handling) check. If failed, you stumble
and lose a position rank.
3-4 Mud Pit. Make a successful DC 13 Wisdom
(Animal Handling) check. If failed, you lose a
position rank and may not Dash on your
following turn.
5-6 Net Snare. You must make a DC 13 Strength
(Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. If
failed, you are dragged off of your mount,
losing a position rank.
7-8 Low Barrier. A wooden beam swings down in
front of you. Make a DC 14 Dexterity saving
throw. If failed, you are dismounted and lose a
position rank.
9-10 Vine Trap. Make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw
to navigate the twisting vines. If failed, you and
your mount fall, costing you two position
ranks.
11-20 No Obstacle. Nothing Happens.

Dwalar, sort of. They are called passive scores, passive perception being pretty much the only one I personally use with any frequency.
Passive Checks
A passive check is a special kind of ability check that doesn't involve any die rolls. Such a check can represent the average result for a task done repeatedly, such as searching for secret doors over and over again, or can be used when the DM wants to secretly determine whether the characters succeed at something without rolling dice, such as noticing a hidden monster.
Here's how to determine a character's total for a passive check:
10 + all modifiers that normally apply to the check
If the character has advantage on the check, add 5. For disadvantage, subtract 5. The game refers to a passive check total as a score.
