He nods at Bjorn "Good question. The docks in 'Anchorage are unpatrolled, not like the policed and inspected Harbour here. Likely be a death sentence to send the Citizen's Brigade down there, in numbers I can currently afford anyways. Plus, if this artifact turns out to be Ubtaon and can provide insight to the curse, I'd prefer it be in our hands rather than the Merchant Princes."
Bjorn Stonehand
Bjorn shrugs and cracks the knuckles on his ham-sized fists. ”I’m happy to provide a little dockside justice. Where do you expect these smugglers to show up?”
Bhoors Thistledown
That night you wash the ship's voyage out of your soul with a hot bath. Or perhaps you black out drunk after vomiting all over a prostitute. Maybe instead you spend the night protecting the streets from crime. Regardless, you are quite ready to get going in the morning. Long rested.
LOL. Black out drunk possibly. Prostitutes never. There world is full of pleasurable company. Persuasion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Last night might have worked out just fine.
---Official AL Play---
With Davin's guidance you arrive at a large storefront bearing a sign written in both Common and the native Chultan tongue. It reads: “The Weave of Life”. Davin was here yesterday, its the establishment of the Lord's Alliance contact: Klevin Van'Sheran.
Greeting you all the young Tethyrian human male with dark hair and green eyes waves you in and shuts the door tightly behind "Youre the one's Blackleaf mentioned, yes? You must be, with that armor! Really now, we should get you into a more comfortable garment. Have you tried these?" he holds up a pair of unusual pants "You'll love them! But I digress...to business..."
Are they nice pants? Is he selling them? If he is offering FREE PANTS yes please.
"There's power flowing through the Serpent's Coil: illegal and stolen merchandise smuggled through the Harbor. The amount of thefts and black market goods has increased over the past few tendays, noticeably affecting the prosperity of the tradesfolk within the city...that might be bad enough, but..."
"Word from one of my contacts is that there is some sort of dangerous artifact being smuggled into the city. They're using a secret passage that leads from the docks in Tiriki Anchorage all the way to the Harbour. While you missed me yesterday I acquired a tip as to the exact location of where this passage exits on the smuggler's side."
"I want you all to get in there and strike. Find out what this artifact is, and shut down the smuggling operation."
Bjorn shrugs and cracks the knuckles on his ham-sized fists. ”I’m happy to provide a little dockside justice. Where do you expect these smugglers to show up?”
Bhoors listens interestedly. When the man finishes he nods, "We have a map I think. Who has the map the harbor master gave us."
Bhoors assumes the harbor master gave us a map of the city. Looking back he might be wrong. But I am not 100%. Its more fun for me to think that Bhoors just assumed one of you kept it . . . He's fuzzy on property rights.
GM Infinity
"West end of the docks near the city walls. Grate on the floor, likely locked and guarded...leads down to the Serpent's Coil, some kind of cavern system for running the goods. They ain't gonna give up something so lucrative without a fight. Here...paid well for this, keep it safe..." he passes you a little black note with the directions.
Bjorn Stonehand
Bah! I’m a barbarian. I can barely read.
With the task being Davin’s, Bjorn leaves the map up to him. ”Let’s get to work.”
GM Infinity
Feel free to retcon any further questions/interactions with Klevin.
The heat is slowly rising in the morning as you prod towards Tiryki Anchorage. This district east of the city is populated by animal trainers, river folk, explorers who need inexpensive lodging, and other rough-and-tumble sorts. Smugglers prefer the unregulated docks of the anchorage over the policed and inspected docks of the harbor, despite the shortage of dock workers and beast-powered cranes to assist in loading and unloading.
Unlike Malar’s Throat and the Old City, Tiryki Anchorage has no fortified temple or ancient stone ziggurats where residents can take shelter against undead or carnivores. Most people dash for Tiryki Gate when the alarm sounds and hope to get through before it’s locked ahead of them. Fortunately, the animals in their pens are more sensitive to approaching enemies than humans are, so few creatures are able to sneak into the area undetected.
Most of the beasts of burden in the city were trained out here, and they’re penned up at night. Ankylosauruses and triceratopses seem to be the most common in that role. Dinosaurs trained for street racing are also stabled here.
Following Klevin's directions is easy enough, he has the careful practiced handwriting of a 9 year old princess. You near the alley way he mentioned and hear the muffled sounds of men nearby (maybe 5), throwing craps it sounds like.
Slides updated with battle map...though not saying battle is required, could happen.
Bjorn Stonehand
Should we have some kind of marching order here?
Bjorn lines up behind Davin. He didn't know the man well but he seemed experienced and his armor bore the scuffs that come with the regular use.
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors smiles whispers back "That's how I got my armor. You want me keeping their eyes there where they are or try to draw them over this way?"
GM Infinity
Should we have some kind of marching order here?
On the main slide I usually have a default order I assume unless someone says otherwise. It was deleted accidentally I suppose but now it is restored (at left, top is front liner). You are also free to move token on slides out of combat.
Spike Servant of Ilmater
Nella nods solemnly and looks around at the rest of the group.
** spoiler omitted **
Spike looks around confused for a moment before realizing the voice belonged to a Nella. On the walk he tells her, Only in small ways. But, the small things are important too. Although, I hope our current task helps in more consequential ways.
Spike Servant of Ilmater
Davin pulls back as he hears the men in front of the group.
"Ok, this looks like the place. You, slick, you any good with dice?", he says quietly, speaking to Bhoors.
Are we assuming these folks are sitting on the entrance to the caves?
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors peaks around the corner to get a look at the alley.
stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 I see that will require me to go along that slanted wall and peak around the corner. 19 is pretty good here's hoping.
"Yeah, at least that's what the map looks like." Bhoors whispers. "I can try to draw them this way, but with one guy on that catwalk its unlikely that more than 2 would leave their posts. Of course that means that you'd have a few seconds with just one or 2 guys before alarm was raised or the 3rd guy would come check on things either." He shrugs, "No guarantees in cases like this but they have thought this through. That's why they have a sniper posted."
On the battle map the path North of the alley. In the top row of squares it looks like there is a ladder that goes up to a roof. How hard would it be for someone to get from the roof that ladder leads to the next roof south so someone would be above the guy on the catwalk?
Nella Yenwood
Nella listens intently to Spike, tilting her head slightly back and forth slowly.
Seeing the party planning for something to happen, she drifts up behind Bhoors and reaches up to lay a small hand on his upper back. In a small voice she speaks
He Who Must Be guides you.
Casting guidance
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors winks at Nella, "Thanks Luv."
I didn't want to go till a few people weighed in. The options Bhoors have suggested are:
1- he can try to lead them back toward our position.
2- he can try to keep them distracted and occupied till you all want to strike. Provided we don't learn that these guys are just alley way dice throwers.
Depending on the DM's answer to my question about the ladder and the roof top it might be fun for someone to take the high road. So that the guy on the catwalk is engaged.
Dwalar Halfbeard
|
Dwalar will let others take the lead in socal situations, but if things go bad he intends to put his shield between his allies and whatever's attacking.
"I say the fewer people know what we're about, the better. Especially the--" (he glances at Bhoors) "--less than reputable types."
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors puts a hand to his chest and looks hurt at Dwarlar before shrugging it off, still keeping his voice down he "Are we not gonna be friends?." He grows more serious, "So am I keeping them busy or reeling them in."
Nella Yenwood
Nella considers quietly for a moment before contributing.
They are not here to play dice. They are guards and lookouts, spending the time in dice. They will not let us pass peacefully.
She smiles slightly and looks mischievously at Bhoors.
Unless we are very convincing.
Her face sobers.
But even then, they will be behind us should things go wrong. Let the smiling man distract them and confirm who they are while we prepare to subdue them.
Davin Grey
"I just wanted to make sure that these people are all part of this smuggling. I am not wanting to kill everything we come across...is there some way to disable them? I have no fear of taking the "hard way", but would rather do this quietly. Anyone with spells that could help?"
Trying to see if we can take them down quietly and quickly...a sleep spell would work perfectly...with a sneaky person getting up to the scout and disabling him as well...or I can shoot him, as my character is pretty good with a bow!
Dwalar Halfbeard
|
Dwalar ignores Bhoors's feigned offense. "An enemy in front o' yeh is better than one behind, aye. But we need to make sure that's who they are. You go talk to 'em," he says to Bhoors, "an' make sure, then we go from there. That's my vote."
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors noods, still whispering, "I think I saw a ladder to the north over that way. If someone wants to get the high ground on the man on the catwalk. I will keep them busy. If you here me yell 'I rolled a hard 6' it means I need help."
With that Bhoors takes a few steps back away from the enemy before starting to whistle a casual tune and he starts a sauntering care free almost dance walk around the corner and down the alley toward the guards.
He rounds the corner still whispering his tune and shuffling. He continues into the alley. As he gets closer 15 feet away or he will just start talking over whatever greeting they give him like he wants to play some dice. Bhoors smiles claps his hands. "You all look to be passing the time and looking to make some ends doing so. Can I get in on the action?"
Persuasion: 1d20 + 5 + 1d4 ⇒ (9) + 5 + (2) = 16
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11 Do these guys carry themselves like guards and are there more posted than we can see.
Shaldinari Vec
"I could help distract them with a bit of noise coming from the opposite end of the alley. Make it sound like a party of knights approaching so their attention is focused elsewhere?" Shaldinari says quietly. She nods further down the unoccupied alley. "I'd need to be a bit closer, but it looks easy enough to slip around the other side of the building."
Shal could move down the top (not sure if that is north or south) alley and cast a minor illusion just around the far corner from the lookout.
Bhoors Thistledown
It looked like we posted at almost the same time now its saying something else but it looks like I Ninja'd you Shaldinari.
GM Infinity
Bhoors gets a good look at them without being noticed. You guys can get up on the roof tops no sweat without a check if desired. You don't see more than 5. Catwalk is 10 ft up, rooftops 15-30. They are armed with short-swords and crossbows. They are certainly huddled around the sewer grate indicated by Klevin.
Shal, sounds good, north is up on the map.
"Beat it, punk." one of them grumbles at Bhoors approach.
"Hold on now, Ted. Look, he got a coin or two. Come on, have a game!
Here now, got the stones to throw in a gold?"
Ante is 1 gp, but dont bother tracking that on sheet (will explain in discussion). Roll contested Dice Set proficiency modified by dex, along with any other deception you are doing
Spike Servant of Ilmater
Spike is talking to everyone but Bhoors, who is otherwise occupied, "Shaldinari, if you feel that you could distract these fools so that we could sneak by and avoid violence, I would prefer that. But, if violence is necessary, I could be of some small help."
Bhoors Thistledown
Sounds good. I don't want to win overall at least not big. So I would prefer to loose more than I win. Because my money incentivizes my presence. I kinda hope that might give me an edge if I have to cheat because WHO CHEATS TO LOOSE (advantage?) I really hope it keeps their attention giving them disadvantage to our approach. But that may be asking too much. Oh great and merciful DM
"I got a coin or 2. What do you say 1 gold for an ante in." He approaches and pulls out a few coins. He kisses one and rolls it down the back of his fingers. When its his turn he takes up the dice. "Here we go."
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 "Not bad."
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 "Darn it. Can I get a shot at making it back."
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 "He up there on the perch. You in on this action. Join in the fun here." He looks around at the others laughing. "He the serious one."
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 "So close. You got me that time." He claps the winner on the back in a friendly manner.
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 "How bouts we go again huh."
Dice: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 sleight of hand for a lower roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 17
insight: 1d20 ⇒ 7
wanting a feel that they are in fact On Watch. How jumpy are they.
While in a break between throws Bhoors looks about, "What has you lads in this back way midday. Just shooting? I mean not one to pry but I am always looking for opportunities lets face it some jobs pay better than others. If your willing to get your hands bloody."
Bhoors Thistledown
Oops for got to roll persuasion on my fishing for info by asking about jobs.
Persuasion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Bhoors Thistledown
Bhoors, don't forget you can choose to add 1d4 to one ability check (including skill checks) of your choice from guidance. You can do so after making the roll. Spend it how you like.
Unless you hit me a second time I used it on my Persuasion to get in the game.
@GM Infinity If it wasn't clear from Bhoors' conversation with the suspected guards. Bhoors is pretending to fish for less than scrupulous work hoping they will let something slip. Bard's don't get thieves cant but with my Urchin background I still figure I can still rub my nose and ask 'how are "THINGS".' If it wasn't clear?
Shaldinari Vec
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Shaldinari smiles at Spike at gives him a knowing nod, then while Bhoors joins the game, she slips quietly down the northern alley and quickly climbs up to the roof of the large warehouse. Poking her head just over the peak, she focuses on a point to the southeast, beyond the corner of the workshop across from her vantage point.
Closing her eyes, she mutters a few syllables in an ancient fae tongue while her finger draws several small patterns in the roof. Patterns the glow with a faint purple energy.
After a few heartbeat the sound of a half dozen heavy armed men clumsily making their way down the street grows louder. Shaldinari changes the tone of her chant slightly and a voice calls out from the same area. "Hold up you louts!" Shouts a voice, a mix of Devin's angry tones and Bjorn's deep northern accent. "You, fancy boy! Put down that lute and point out the way to the tunnels."
"Oh yes, sir." Says a dry, mocking, higher pitched voice. "It should be to your left....no sir....you're other left."
"Right! Draw steel and let's clear this nest before the rain starts again."
The stomping noises then continue and grow louder.
Moved myself on the map. Casting Minor Illusion. Duration 1 minute. Starting 30 feet away and slowly moving the noise closer.
GM Infinity
Bhoors, one of the men's eyes narrow at your question "Hrmph...I like you better when you ain't asking questions. Just play the game and we won't have any troub-"
About the same time, Shaldinari's spell triggers and they leap into action, clearly startled...
Bhoors: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Shal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Davin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Dwalar: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Spike: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Nella: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Bjorn: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Enemy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
...now could be your chance to strike.

Bhoors laughs it off. "Not gonna share. Tsk tsk tsk Its almost like you all are guarding a secret entrance to a smuggling tunnel. Your betting you can handle what comes next. Sometimes YOU HAVE TO ROLL THE HARD 6."
Even before Bhoors finishes the sound fron down the alley take his attention. He squints. Sounds like heats on to it.
He takes a few steps back toward where he left his allies. But he starts to run through some lines of a song, "And she shines in the night like a beacon."

That must be the elf, Dwalar thinks as he straps on his shield. Drawing his axe, he comes out from his hiding-place. "You lot stay where y'are," he growls at the guards. "If yeh don't wanna make it worse."
Draw weapon, draw shield, and move.
Bjorn Stonehand
Raging as a bonus action. Move. Attack. Because of rage I don’t have a bonus action to spare to grapple.
Bjorn squeezes past his allies as he comes lumbering around the corner. He roars a challenge and slugs the nearest of the gamblers in the gut with a huge fist.
Punch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Damage (rage): 1d4 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7
Bhoors Thistledown
Remember depending on their saves the 3 guys on the ground (and any hiding in the area) are light with Faerie Fire. You might want to roll for possible advantage due the Faerie Fire.

My bad. I totally didn't see the 1d4 in there.
Nella moves into the alley and slings a bullet at one of the men who are lit up.
Rolling with advantage, assuming at least one of them failed their dex save. I do not want to target the man Bjorn hit as I cannot do non-lethal damage with a sling. If no one is lit up, I'll use the first attack roll. I assume that they probably have half-cover or better against me, granting +2 or more to their ac against my attack since my allies are in front of me.
Sling attack roll 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Sling attack roll 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Sling damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
GM Infinity
Nella, as you step out and take your shot, you alone notice one of them has a small key on a necklace around their neck.
Nella, you also crit with that sling! Roll another d4
Dex vs Bhoors: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Dex vs Bhoors: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Dex vs Bhoors: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Two of the brigands glow with an otherworldy light, as you gaze in their direction your perspective seems to focus onto their very being.
Attacks against those two have advantage, as mentioned. Ill mark on map shortly

Bjorn's fist crashes into the smugglers face, nearly breaking the sound barrier on the way in. Can reroll for advantage and possible crit if you like, Bjorn.

Re-reading my actions I realized that my placement on the map which works great for an ending location but assuming the guards and I were throwing dice we would have been huddled in a circle meaning my stepping away from them would likely trigger Opportunity Attacks. Unless they were fooled into thinking that I was running from the illusionary noise.
Also my Spell DC is 13. I am already higher level in my mind.
