A Plea to find a few players for an unusual 5e Game

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hello
I would like to try and find a couple of players interested in joining an unusual 5e game.

This game

Palace of the Vampire Queen, the 5e version

was launched late last year with a group of enthusiastic players.

I’ve lost every single one of the original players for one reason or another, but managed to recruit a few new players along the way, including a Gnome Druid who only recently joined the game.

I really do not want to see this game end. So please, if you are interested in joining a unique 5e game, please give this one a look.

Please read about the peculiar house rules and take a look at the recruitment tread for details of how character creation should be handled.

I’d like to recruit two or three new characters to this game.

This is a classic dungeon crawl with some unusual house rules put in place to try and give the game a first edition feel

I expect players to be willing to post at least once a day, but I'm not a stickler. Often the game slows a bit, but we are keeping it moving.

Are you interested?

I'll give it a go. I bought the 3 rulebooks at X-mas time and still haven't played yet. I like the idea of playing a truly old-school dungeon crawl.

Rolling da bones o' fate:

5d6: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 3, 4) = 14 10
5d6: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 1, 6) = 18 14
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 5) = 17 14
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 4) = 16 14
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 6) = 16 14
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 1) = 13 12

Shiny loot!: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6) = 13 13*10 = 130 gp

Welp, the extra die on the 5d6 did nothing for me. Overall, not too bad though.

I see that you are currently running an NPC fighter. I usually like to keep it simple and play martial classes, so I would probably choose a fighter for my PC. Would that be okay, or do you prefer that I play a different class?

A dungeon crawl lie this can always use another fighter.

5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 6, 1) = 21 16
5d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3, 2, 5) = 19 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 6) = 21 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 6) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 4) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 5) = 18 16

That ain't bad...

3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) = 7 70gp ouch

I'll come up with something when I've got my PhB handy.

Seeing a cleric, druid, rogue, sorcerer and fighter, so looks like bases are covered.

(Logan1138 posting as Janus): Okay, my mountain dwarf fighter, Janus Rotenberg, is pretty much done.

(Note: Janus is pronounced as yahn oos)

If everything looks okay to you Generic DM, just let me know what my next step should be.

So, this is the character I'm putting up. Looking to see if you're actually looking for any fluff?

I'll bite--I like 5E quite a lot, and I've enjoyed games with you in the past, Terquem. This reminds me a bit of the "A" Dungeon games, which I'm still sad I had to drop.

Let's see what the rolls have to say...

Wealth: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) = 9

Rollin, Rollin, Rollin:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 1) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 5) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6, 1) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 3) = 13 11
5d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 3, 4) = 16 11
5d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1, 6, 6) = 20 18

18, 15, 13, 12, 11, 11; 90 gold to start. Not sure what I'll do yet, seems like the party's pretty well-rounded and recruitment has a fighter and monk here already.

Okay, let’s take a look at what we have here

Snake Charmer

Jade – this looks like a great character (we had a Monk in the original recruitment, and I worked up an alternative Monk Ki system that uses Ki slots that are managed exactly like spell slots, sort of makes me happy not to have alternative systems for doing similar things – would you be interested in seeing it?). I’d like you to pick a trait, bond, ideal, and flaw and if you want more information about elves and humans in this setting I’ll post it for you.

Logan1138

Janus – another solid Dwarf character, I like it

Loup Blanc – You are always welcome, anyway I can talk Darmo into returning to Its “A” Dungeon, we need a new rogue, I’ll even advance you to level 4

I'd certainly like to know more about your alternative ki system.

Origin: Pilgrim
Trait: I'm driven by a wanderlust that led me away from home.
Ideal: Life is like the seasons, in constant change, and we must change with it.
Bond: An injury to the unspoiled wilderness of my home is an injury to me.
Flaw: There is no room for caution in a life lived to the fullest.

Greetings fellow adventurers, Myna the thi..errr...wealth distribution specialist here. Welcome to our game and best of luck.
Some are asking what classes we might need within our group. Well we have a war priest (A grumpy old dwarf...but really he is nice...its just very deep down!) and myself! A little light on the fighting and magic. So if your looking to join us, a warrior or a mage would not be turned away (unless the dwarf doesn't like you...then I'll vote you in just to bug him!!)

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your stopping by!

I'll post a link to the modified Monk rules (it will be a word document) in the header above. If you like the rules, please use them, if not, you can just go with what is in the Player's Handbook

I'll send a Private Message to Jade and Janus with ideas about how we can get you into the game as soon as you are ready.

Still waiting for two other players to decide if this is right for them or not.

Alright, I believe I've got down my submission, Kayne Aetherax, a scholar who was outcast from his university when he used a summoned devil for his own desires. Of course, selling his soul to the fiend to learn eldritch secrets didn't work out quite as well as he'd hoped, and now he's on an obsessive quest to discover more and more secrets of the arcane in orderto eventually win back his soul. He's a very Lawful-sided Lawful Evil, mostly falling into dark territory because he's not a nice person and he's too absorbed in his own concerns to worry about the average person. He'll quickly learn to work with the party, though, and will likely come to regard them as, if not friends, then at least traveling companions--even if he'll never admit it.

Loup - I love the way you thought out this character and I would take him in the game immediately, but

When we are going to introduce a LE character, I sort of think it needs the approval of the rest of the group. So I will put it past those applying here (Both Janus and Jade are in if they want to be) and point the other players at this post to get their opinions. If the group will give it a try, you're in.

Here is the Monk revision I mentioned (it is also posted at the top of the regular game thread for this game)
Monk Ki Slots Variant

I'm in!

Evil players don't need evil characters to make everyone around them miserable. I'm fine with Loup's character being whatever alignment he likes (lazy purple is NOT an alignment... yet) as long as Loup, the player, is going to be with us, not against us.

The ki variant is interesting, but I think I'll take the PhB version.

Jade and Janus, are ready and willing to join this game?

Loup - at least two of the other players are comfortable with the character you are suggesting. It might be another day until I am sure everyone will be alright.

Loup - looks like there is no opposition to you joining, if you are still interested.

Jade and Janus were sent PMs just waiting for reply

No problem, I'll move into discussion and gameplay as I can.

Going to give Janus a bit more time, a few hours perhaps, if he does not respond, I will throw Jade and Kayne into the story first, and then introduce Janus if and when he is ready.

I've included a post at the game thread that opens the door for Kayne and Jade to start playing

Post when you are ready, please.

I'm moderately interested, but it sounds like you've already got more recruits than you need! If it turns out the crew you've got going doesn't fill your ranks, let me know.

Thanks Grey, I'll keep you in mind

Sorry about not responding sooner (I was going to play Janus, the dwarven fighter) but I think it is best if I don't participate in this game. I hope everyone has a great time.

Logan/Janus

No worries, Logan! Thanks for letting me know. If there was something in particular that turned you off, please send me a PM and tell me about it, otherwise I may never get any better at this.

Nope, it had nothing to do with you at all.

The fact is that I really don't like play-by-post gaming and always end up quitting a game soon after I start. I just got excited by the prospect of playing 5E in a classic early D&D adventure. Once the initial excitement wore off, I realized I would be doing you a great injustice to get in the game and then quickly quit because of my dislike for the medium.

I hope everyone has a great time!

Good to know! Thanks

Lord grey - there is a slot open if you are still interested

Okay! So it looks like right now you currently have a... gnome druid, a dwarf cleric, a teifling sorcerer, and an elf rogue?

So some kind of sturdy tank would be the preferable fit?

A dwarf fighter would be awesome, and I already have a light background introduction prepared for one.

Flint here! They call me Flint of Iron, since I'm made of sturdier stuff than your average halfling! Well, here's hoping I am...

rolls!:

4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2, 5) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 3) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 4) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 3) = 14
5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 4, 1) = 13
5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 5, 6) = 25

Wealth: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6) = 15

So... 150 GP starting wealth.

Starting stats are... 11, 11, 13, 12, 11, 18?

Sturdy enough, I suppose!

Here's my concept so far: Like other halflings, Flint has a taste for the exciting and interesting. Unlike them though, he possesses none of the patience for clever subterfuge and trickery. If Flint see's something interesting, he walks straight up to it and asks it what the deal is, to the chagrin of others. Flint has heard the horrors of something so romantic he just has to stick his nose into it, the vampire queen.

Edit: Oh dang, you ninja'd my post. Is a Halfling fighter acceptable? Maybe a halfling raised by dwarves, if that helps for the introduction?

Edit edit: Also, am I making this at level 1?

Yes level 1, and roll 3d6 x10 to establish your starting experience points to be a little closer to the other heroes.

An Aladoan halfling raised in a dwaven Baylor village. I will send you an introduction that gets you to the Black Village where you meet Kayne and Jade, and set out for the palace from there.

If you are sure you want to play in this very unusual game, please post in the discussion thread as you alias and introduce yourself. When you see a game post by Kayne or Jade and you are okay with the background I send you, you can post in game

Bonus starting EXP: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3) = 7 70 exp starting! Neato.
