It feels like competition over the same IP, duplication of efforts and folly. Can Goblinworks and Obsidian work together?
I don't agree at all. Producing two separate games in two separate genres based on the same IP should find little competition. There is no duplication of effort either, as creating an MMO and creating an RPG are like apples and oranges.
People who play RPGs will play Obsidian's game, people who like MMOs will play Goblinworks' game, and people who like both (or are enthused by the IP itself) will likely play both. I certainly intend to.
I am certain that Paizo wouldn't have made the deal unless they were pretty sure it wouldn't negatively impact either project.

On an unrelated note, the title of this topic is causing me no end of musical distress.
What's this? What's this?
Pathfinder everywhere
What's this?
There's some plans up in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my eyes
I must be dreaming
Wake up, Xaer, this isn't fair
What's this?
This, this exactly!

There were often multiple D&D games in the market at the same time. There are two D&D MMOs in the market now. I don't see Obsidian's efforts as any more likely to be competitive directly with us than the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.
I think that anything that makes Pathfinder stronger makes Goblinworks stronger.

Hopefully it will be something that is not PvP focused and more of a PC vs AI style RPG. Maybe even turn based or with module packs that can be fan created. I backed both kickstarters to support the idea of PFO but frankly have little interest in claiming my time once the game goes live. An alternate style RPG based on Pathfinder would be awesome to see.

I suspect there are going to be a lot of free months floating around. I hope we can buy and sell them relatively easily, as it would be nice to get a little money back in the pockets of the people who don't want their play time.
And on the flip side, I would love to buy some extra game time on the cheap. C:

So?

Taking a pointer from my own experience, I've enjoyed Games Workshop games and IP/Brand in the past. I still find an excitement that some of these games systems might be ported to video-games and do the originals justice. So I think the brand is very important if you have been in the past a long-time customer of it. Unfortunately Games Workshop seem to be disenfranchising their playerbase (expense of boardgames etc) and then coming out with sub-standard ports eg I was reading a review of the latest port of Blood Bowl (Edge rated the PC version something like 1/10 some years ago) and the current one for iOS is the 5yr old port with poor interface etc in a word: "Sloppy". It's frustrating because the game system has elements of American Football and Speedball (aka in the movies Rollerball) so could have been a great game for iOS. But no do slip-shod sloppy port and makes some quick cash it seems... . Rick Priestly one of the founders said something to this effect I noticed sometime ago, irrespective of the grapevine of various forums.
I'd be delighted to see Obsidian do the Pathfinder IP justice in a NWN or Pillars of Eternity style port. I backed the aforementioned kickstarter and it seems to be shaping up to be an excellent faithful version with real care and concern put in by the makers for the players. This is the way to do a brand justice, as I'm sure Paizo will note.

I REALLY miss an up-to-date NwN kinda game, where I can build my world and it master it for my players. But it is absolutely not the same thing as a MMO, you can't talk about competition.
Except if it's indeed a MMO, of course.

I would love to see a turn-based strategy game based on Pathfinder rules. Really, I'm a sucker for just about any decent turn-based game. On the other hand, I hope that PFO will be so kickass that I have no time for other games. Fingers crossed!

Mmh, just a card game for now.
"OBSIDIAN ANNOUNCES PATHFINDER LICENSE
Obsidian to partner with Paizo Inc. to release electronic Pathfinder games
INDIANAPOLIS -- August 13, 2014 -- Obsidian Entertainment, the developer of Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: the Stick of Truth and the Kickstarter phenomenon Pillars of Eternity, announced that they have entered into a long-term licensing partnership with Paizo Inc. to produce electronic games based on its popular Pathfinder Roleplaying Game intellectual property
Obsidian's first licensed product will be a tablet game based on the highly successful Pathfinder Adventure Card game, a cooperative game for 1 to 4 players. Players each have a unique character composed of a deck of cards and a set of stats. Characters have classes such as fighter, rogue, wizard and cleric, as well as numbers that define attributes such as strength, wisdom and charisma etc. Players will be able to customize their deck to better suit each individual’s vision of their character.
"At Obsidian we have a long history of working with the greatest RPG franchises, and we're thrilled to get to play in the Pathfinder universe now," said CEO Feargus Urquhart. "We're huge fans and can't wait to bring what we do in the electronic gaming world to Pathfinder fans everywhere".
In the world of Pathfinder, players take on the role of brave adventurers fighting to survive in a world beset by magic and evil. The Pathfinder RPG is currently translated into multiple languages, with hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. The Pathfinder brand has also been licensed for comic book series, graphic novels, miniatures, plush toys, apparel, and is being developed into a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game.
"Obsidian is a video game developer at the top of its game", said Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens. "Being able to bring that type of experience and passion to Pathfinder can only mean great things, both for our loyal Pathfinder community and for all fans of great CRPG's."
Obsidian will be at Gen Con 2014 showing off an early prototype of the digital Pathfinder Adventure Card Game in the Paizo booth (#203) and in their own booth (#2151) featuring the first consumer hands on for Pillars of Eternity.

As someone who was intrigued by the idea of the card game but not quite intruiged enough to invest in it, this interests me greatly.
This also puts an amusing spin on Ryan's earlier comment:
I don't see Obsidian's efforts as any more likely to be competitive directly with us than the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

The worst part about the PACG is the cardmoving- building the scenario requires assembling 20+(10*#of players) cards in location decks of 10 each.
The rules are tight enough that a direct port of the PACG would be fairly easy- no money need be spent redeveloping or playtesting the rules, only the program.

There will be a CRPG as well. Obsidian just doesn't have any details to share yet. It is a long term partnership. Many games will be made. Stay tuned!
Lisa
I would really love long run series games like the old SSI games for AD&D. Of course, now you can just make modules/expansions instead of releasing entire new games.

WOTC is unlikely to license anything that they own to Paizo, just on general competitive principle and jealousy that Pathfinder has outlasted the market life 3.5 and 4e...
I was actually wondering about that. How Pathfinder and Obsidian was going to get pass the 3.5 ruleset.
Ultimately they might have to use a different system but just base the game on Golarion setting.
