I was wondering if you have any additional information about Ylimancha beyond what's listed in Chronicle of the Righteous? One of my PCs wants to play as a paladin of her, and I'm not entirely sure of what that would entail.
Thanks for your time!
How does one become the first paladin of a deity in a region, especially when they have no support?

This is Rise of the Runelords, so the PC would actually be from Magnimar. Is Magnimar the most likely place where there may be a paladin of Ylimancha, considering that there is an organized mystery cult of Ylimancha there?

Hey James, a few questions:
- When you are a DM, are the Gods of Golarion a huge force even when you got no divine characters in your group or as a major NPC? For example if you make a prayer or a blasphemy, do you created a roleplay and/or mechanical effect for your players?
-Can we expect a blog on the evolutions of the setting in PF2? Will you take into account the previous AP with what we could called a “Vanilla Ending”? And if that is the case can we expect some of them where you consider that the players failed and the BBEG won?
Please limit your questions to one per post. If you have multiple questions, make multiple posts–one for each.
Yes, the deities of any setting are a significant element of every game I run. Player character mix is irrelevant to that for me.
There'll be information about how the setting will evolve in 2nd edition, but those changes will not be extensive—it'll be the same world folks already enjoy, and you'll be able to use most of the flavor from products we've already published as-is. There is no "vanilla ending." This is not an ending for the setting, but just the next day.

By being a self-starter. Someone has to be the first, and the first of anything is a great character arc and story, and great character arcs and stories are wonderful things for players to explore and play with.
How do you do it? The same way you as a GM would create a new organization or group or faction or whatever for your setting... only you'd do so during play, rather than before play, and you'd work with the GM as needed to make decisions and figure things out.

How do you feel about retcons? Do you have any general philosophy about when to change some established element of Golarion that you think isn't working and when not to? Are there generally better and worse ways to do it?
Retcons are just another way of saying "errata."
Sometimes, when we design rules, we screw them up and the rule needs to be fixed via errata. Be it because we didn't anticipate the implications of something about the rule, or simply because a typo slipped into print and a monster we published has a strength score of 189 instead of 18.
Mistakes happen in all elements of writing, though, not just rules. And when we make mistakes in the world lore or flavor, those mistakes are corrected for the same reasons we fix the rule errors—because they don't create the setting and game we intended.
It's weird to me that so many folks are so eager for rules errata but so resistant to lore errata. Especially since many rules errors can be addressed by common sense, but not so the world errors, where it's not as easy to discern the writer's intent if it's wrong.

Paladins of Ylimancha are super rare, as I said, so there's not a place that would be "most likely" for them. Worshipers of Ylimancha are certainly more common along Varisia's Lost Coast than elsewhere in the Inner Sea region though.

Which deity do good werewolves/lycanthropes worship? The first deity that came to mind was Ashava, since she counts celestial werewolves among her followers, but lycanthropes aren't mentioned anywhere else in the description. I'm curious because the town of Wolf's Ear intrigued me.
That'd depend on what the lycanthrope's personality is. One who revels in nature might worship Gozreh or one of the eldest. One who's all about hunting might worship Gorum or Erastil. One who's into society and being a member of a pack might worship Abadar. One who enjoys traveling and exploring might worship Desna. One who's all about keeping secrets and using their power to do crime might worship Norgorber. And so on.
A lycanthrope who's defined SOLELY by the fact that she/he is a lycanthrope is, frankly, a boring character—a stereotype. In that case, the worshiper would most likely worship Jezelda or the like, because a werewolf with no other flavor is a monster and not much else.

A lot of gms refuse to allow solutions if they are not expressly written allowed in a module, regardless of much sense the solution makes.
Any ideas, or even plans for, writing modules to try to improve a GM's handling of sucn situations, i.e. by generalizing module solutions instead of acknowledging specific solutions?

We do the best we can to give advice and information for GMs in adventures, but the GM's job is to be quick on their feet and to handle things when the players zig when they're supposed to zag.

So you've said that any Lawful Good deities can have Paladins... what do you think a Paladin of Ghenshau would be like? He seems so laid back and chill, I can't imagine the classic gung-ho Paladin who charges off into the sunset to slay Evil following his teachings.
Honestly, Ghenshau seems like a weird choice for a Lawful deity at all. Is it just because he was born an Archon, or is his lackadaisical attitude somehow organized?

"Taldor, The First Empire" has some additional info on this:
"Today, Merciful Bay is a bustling seaside town of
fisherfolk, sailors, and whalers. Modern citizens are
superstitious and primarily worship the empyreal lord
Ylimancha, guardian of coastal waters and fisherfolk.
Her mystery cult is stronger here than almost anywhere
else in the Inner Sea region. Devotees of the Harborwing
make pilgrimages to the town and the angelic shrine
dedicated to her. Different sects of her mystery cult—as
well as those of other empyreal lords and, some argue,
various demon lords—find refuge for secretive rites in
the extensive sea caves that dot the region."
I have a pirate-hunter sea captain paladin who worships the Harborwing.
James: are there any parts of the Lost Coast you'd recommend for a pilgrimage or as a site with a sizeable population of Ylimancha worshippers?

Question - Other than entities already used for an AP, are there any entities you'd like to use as the BBEG of an AP?
Not fishing for information on upcoming product, just wondering who might inspire you.

Hi James!
What is your opinion about Dwarf Wizard FCB and accelerated crafting rules? Some people online seem to add the extra gp crafted each day before multiplying the total via Cooperative Crafting, +5 Spellcraft DC and the like, which leads to 2x wealth crafted per day at level 5, 3x at level 10, and so on, which in my opinion seems too much (although I have never played a crafter so far, so I don't really know if this increase in crafting speed would be game breaking). More here.
Additionally, do animated objects crafting points/flaws stack for similar abilities? For example, can I pick the Faster ability N times to get Nx10 additional feet for a certain movement mode? Can I select the Slower flaw multiple times (up to the creature's base speed) to get extra CPs?
Thanks!

I've been preparing for my PC's to enter Xin-Shalast finally and I noticed that the art has some amazing architecture. I get a Thai or Tibetan feel from it. Also I pick up on that from the clothes the Runelords and rune giants wear. My group understands better when there is a real world analogy I can use for describing the world. What were your inspiration when coming up with the architecture and fashion of Thassilon (or at least Shalast)?

Not familiar at all with Ghenshau (and I wasn't involved in creating the character), so I can't say off the top of my head. But not all paladins need to be violent and aggressive.

Hello James!
I've got a quick question for you: What were Vyriavaxus' domains before he got bumped off by Nocticula? Chaos, Evil and Darkness are the obvious three, since Shadow Demons used to be his followers and he was the night to Easivra's day, but what was his 4th one?
Haven't ever really sorted that out. If I were to pick one today, the fourth one would probably be Death.

Seems like the type of thing that would fit into any society with a concept of heaven and hell. We've done a few of these already. The Golden Goblin in Riddleport, for example, has its serving staff dressed as demons.

Please limit questions in size. When you make them super long and wordy, it takes much longer to reply, since I have to cut and paste and adjust the quotation to get the context of the question into the quote rather than a non-useful wall of text. And then I have to spend this much extra words asking folks to keep their questions short, so in the end, for a short answer question, this ends up taking much longer than normal to answer.
Magnimar.

Yes, and they will be used at some point, so I'm not gonna say who they are quite yet. (Once I run out of BBEGs who inspire me, I run out of interest in working on Adventure Paths, after all, so hopefully that won't happen anytime soon.)

Hi JJ,
is there a particular reason why the possibility of crafting diseases has not been thought?
when is it possible to craft poisons?
Because that's a bit too science fictiony, I guess. And it gets even yuckier than poison, frankly, when it comes to ethics. And because no one's ever done it before, so it's easy to forget. And because disease kills and cripples over a long period of time, which makes it an excellent menace to use against PCs (since they're "on screen" the entire game, and thus around long enough for diseases to matter), but not so useful against foes in combat, since for most diseases, they take a long time to manifest, so crafting diseases would NOT be a combat advantage for anyone, and would really fall into the "I just want to cause misery over a long period of time" category, which is evil, and which isn't the focus of PC options in the game.

Dwarf Wizard FCB? Does FCB stand for "Fried Chicken Baker?" I dunno. I feel like food cooked by dwarves would tend to be gritty and bland.
AKA: I have no idea what you're asking, but it LOOKS like your'e asking a character build question, and my answer to those is "Build the character you like, not the one that other people say you have to build." And if that character isn't "faster" or does less damage per round than another, that doesn't bother me and it's not a facet of character building that interests me.

Wayne Reynolds' painting for the cover of "Spires of Xin-Shalast" was my inspiration. I don't recall the exact art order request, but I suspect it was something like "Give the architecture a vaguely Asian theme, and make rune giants kind of be giant samurai."
Wayne did the rest.

Pretty sure FCB = Favored Class Bonus.
Question: How do you feel about fried chicken and waffles?
Huh, first time I've ever heard "FCB = Favored Class Bonus." Just goes to show you that it's better to use full words in messageboard posts rather than acronyms.
I'm okay with fried chicken and waffles, but since I prefer grilled chicken to fried chicken and pancakes or french toast to waffles... there ya go.

I notice you have to repeat the 'one question per post' rule a lot. Would it be possible to have a site administrator or moderator add a banner or heading of some sort at the top of the thread with the rules for posting? It might free you up to spend less time repeating yourself and more time answering questions. Just a suggestion!
