1 person marked this as a favorite.

The title pretty much says it all. I am recruiting between 4 to 6 characters to undertake a cooperative conversion of the classic game Baldur's Gate. I will be doing a lot of the work but I do ask for some aid from player characters.

I have beaten the game once about 14 years ago and am replaying now. So that I can reacquaint myself with the story. All who are accepted into the game will be Bhaalspawn and will receive the added benefit of that in addition to their race.

An additional background will be awarded that will be entitled: Gorion's Ward.

I have only the bare bones of concept but you will have been a Ward of Gorion for 20 years.

All races, classes, backgrounds and alignments are open. I will form a party that has the best chance of working together and to generate subplots from.

Attributes will be generated with the 27 point buy method (with the exception that points may be dropped to as low as 6 on a 1 for 1 basis) or take the standard 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. This is done out of the interest for fairness.

One difference from the game is that I will allow more than 5 NPC's to accompany you but I will adjust encounters to be an appropriate challenge.

I am looking for barebones crunch at the moment (List class, background, race, alignment) and at least a paragraph of background story.

I'm interested in a 5e game, but haven't played Baldur's Gate. Can you elaborate, or link to a spoiler-free synopsis?

Lantern Lodge

For the last 20 years you have grown up as the ward of Gorion in Candlekeep (an ancient fortress turned library) along the Sword Coast, along with your childhood friend and other ward Imoen. Having been summoned by him, you have departed for the Friendly Arm Inn found in the confines of Beregost to meet with friends Khalid and Janeria (both of whom are harpers).

Your mission is simple: The Sword Coast has entered into a difficult time: iron production has virtually halted, metal already produced quickly 'rots', tools and weapons break easily (even the player's own, except for magical weapons) and bandits scour the countryside seeking iron over any other treasure.

Gorion knows the source of the trouble, but will not tell the protagonist, and instead decides to leave Candlekeep and journey with the PC to a hiding place. The night after leaving Candlekeep, the pair are ambushed by a group of bandits led by a mysterious armored figure. When Gorion refuses to hand over the PC, he is attacked by the bandits; Gorion defeats them but dies in doing so.

Nice...brings back memories. Actually just re-discovered my old copy of BG II yesterday.

For those who haven't played it. You can buy baldurs gate 2 for PC online from good old games (www.gog.com). I played it last year and I think its aged very well. Its cheap go play it!

@DaWay, awesome idea for a campaign. Shame its 5e... Also shame about being a Baalspawn, I'd want to play Minsc, "Go for the eyes boo!" ;)

I actually played in a 5e conversion of Baldur's Gate. Sadly it died. Still, I would love to be a part of this. I was thinking of a cleric of Deneir. That would be with the knowledge domain. And either the sage or acolyte backgrounds. I'll need to see which fits best.

dotting to make a character later. Do you also plan on running the sequel as well?

edit: you said all alignments. So, you are okay with our Evil characters?

What the heck. This sounds like a good way to get my feet wet with 5e. I'm in if you'll have me.

Strange question - would it screw up your campaign ideas if I played a variation of Imoen? I think playing her as a Rouge that eventually moves into the Arcane Trickster archetype might fit her very well.

Oh, quite interested :)

Lantern Lodge

at doublegold. I plan to take it one step at a time but when we get there if we want to continue I will run the sequel as well. I am okay with evil characters not evil players, so as long as you get along and aren't disruptive to play I will be okay with it.
Please note that I am more apt to okaying a LE character than NE or CE. I don't intend to run a game of murderous hobos.

JGray. That's fine with me. One less NPC is always good news. I actually created Imoen last night as an Arcane Trickster Rogue. I couldn't find any background that really fit her, so I made one, similar to Tika Waylan concept for the background. If you can't find one that works let me know and we can create one that works.

Spazmodeus: Glad to hear it.

Also it should be said I am not intending to really get underway until the 9th when I can pick up the DMG. But it sounds like we will have a lot of work ahead of us to get things ready.

Awesome. I'll get to work on ideas. What are our character building guidelines, specifically? You mentioned changing the point buy rules - is that a definite thing? What level will we be starting at? What's our starting gold and so forth? :)

Excited to be involved!

I'll dot as well. Not sure what to play yet.

Lantern Lodge

Level 1. Max HP.
Starting equipment from class and background. Trinket of choice.

27 point buy. All abilities start at 8. You may drop one ability of your choice to 7 for a bonus point or to 6 for two bonus point. All other standard point buy rules apply.

Gotcha. I'll try to have a build for you soon. At level 1 she won't be an Arcane Trickster yet but she's probably already "borrow" someone's spellbook and made a copy... :)

Will get a build up soon. May resurrect my half orchestra paladin of dredd.

DaWay: Are we using the optional Feat rules? Need to know so I know if I'm applying +1 to all Attributes or using the variant human traits.

Lantern Lodge

Variant humans are in play, and thusly feats may be taken instead of the ability increase as per the 5e rules.

Okay, I've done a little more with the character now that I had a chance to look at my PHB.

Male half-elf Cleric of Deneir (knowledge domain, acolyte background)

STR 14 DEX 12 CON 14
INT 10 WIS 16 CHA 10

Skills: Arcana, History, Insight, Investigation, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Religion.

I chose the standard gear, rather than buy everything.

I don't have a name yet, but I'll work on that tomorrow on my lunch break. But the majority of the crunch is done. If picked, I just need to create a profile and copy/paste everything.

I am thinking of a thunder cleric.

Lantern Lodge

This is getting more popular than I thought it would be. I have given this thought and while I am willing to run one group through this I am not willing to do two.

There is a positive side however. I would be willing to convert Icewind Dale as well, and I am willing to do a game of Tyranny of Dragons. So when you submit a character please list what games you would want to play in (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, or Tyranny of Dragons). If you want to do multiple characters and play in each that is fine but my limit per group is 6. And if you have a character in one game I will make cuts if I do not have the space.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

As I'm not familiar with Baldur's Gate, I'm willing to withdraw to make space for all the people that will get nostalgia tingles from the game.

Tyranny of Dragons is a new AP made for 5e though, and doesn't require any background setting knowledge, right?

Perhaps that would be a better fit for me. I'm interested playing a Rogue, Monk, or Warlock. Maybe Fighter or Barbarian.

Lantern Lodge

Petty Alchemy play whatever game you want. They all occur in the Forgotten Realms setting by Ed Greenwood. While I am not as up to speed as I am with Pathfinder there is always room to grow. All I ask from players is a willingness to drive the story forward.

I'll be playing in Baldur's Gate (I hope). My take on Imoen is a little different from the original but I think it keeps her spirit alive. I think, at heart, Imoen is a scholar. Her desire to know magic and her desire to know what is in people's pockets stems from the same place - a desire to know as much as possible. To that end, for her background I picked the Sage, more or less, with some very minor modifications.

Here she is:

Imoen's Character Sheet:

Imoen
Class: Rogue
Level: 1st

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Languages: Common, Gnomish, Fey (Hey! Do I judge YOUR first boyfriend?), Infernal (Or your first girlfriend? Oi, what a crazy summer that was!)

Personality Traits: Curiosity Killed the Cat, As Many Smiles As Freckles
Ideal: Knowledge is Power
Bond: Fellow Orphans
Flaw: Knowing Stuff? Sure. Planning? Not so much.

Strength: 10 (+0)
Dexterity: 16 (+3)
Constitution: 10 (+0)
Intelligence: 16 (+3)
Wisdom: 9 (-1)
Charisma: 12 (+1)

Hit Points: 8

Feat: Magic Initiate (Wizard)

Skills: Acrobatics, Arcana, History, Investigation, Religion, Sleight of Hand, Stealth

Proficiencies: Light armor, simple weapons, hand crossbows, longwords, rapiers, shortswords, Thieves' tools.

Saving Throws: Dexterity, Intelligence

Features: Expertise (Investigation, Sleight of Hand), Sneak Attack (1d6), Thieves' Cant

Equipment: Rapier, Shortbow and quiver of 20 arrows, burglars' pack, leather armor, two daggers, thieves' tools, a bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, a set of common clothes, a journal of secrets, a belt pouch containing 10 gp

Trinket: A piece of crystal that glows faintly in the moonlight

Cantrips: Dancing Lights, Mage Hand
1st Level Spell: Sleep

I'm thinking ranger. any advice as to what favored enemies might work? I don't want to pick something completely useless, say aberrations and find out there are none in this ap. feel free to use a spoiler if you are worried about ruining it for others.

Either Baldur's Gate or Ice wind Dale would work fine with me.

Baldur's Gate and Tyranny interest me.

I'm leaning towards a monk, but still thinking.

I love the half orchestra autocorrect.

I meant half orc, but I'm pretty happy about orchestra.

I'd rather play Icewind or Baldur, being in a ToD game already.

okay the character so far, A Neutral aligned cleric with giant as the favored enemy..

He took up his career as a Sailor, but on his journeys he would run into pirates, and these weren't ordinary pirates, but giant pirates, not to mention some of the lands he traveled to had giants. It was giants everywhere, not the sea creatures themselves that he had to worry about, but the giants. As far as the sea creatures went, he knew how to handle them, in fact capturing fish and even large game creatures was his thing. But in between jobs it was giants, going into caves and exploring nearby islands. Jazz Kraz, the human ranger is a careful and cautious ranger loves traveling the seas. But something about this land has drawn him here, either his ability to track stuff, or because he hasn't been to the section of land before, or because they know that Sailors are tough and ready for anything. Maybe it is because his friend knew he was superstitious and took up interest in the magic arts. Whatever the reason he was invited her by a friend saying he would like him to come here, and he is ready to see for himself why here, why he is needed, and what he can do to help. One of his old Sailor friends in on here, and when the letter came, Jazz Kraz did not wait, he went here, as he'll do anything for his life long friends.

Race: Human variant: Skills: Athletics, Stealth, Arcana, Nature, Animal Handling, Perception.

Grimn Stonecleaver

Grimn has always felt different. Unlike the other dwarves in his clan, Grimn believes that he was born to be a bear. It wasn't long before he started exploring the woods, looking for "his people". He wandered for several years before finding a wounded bear caught in a trap. Freeing the bear, Grimn set about attacking the hunters who had left it helpless and injured, and were heavily in their cups.

After it was over, Grimn returned to the bear only to discover that the "bear" was actually a druid, who had regained consciousness. He took Grimn in and taught him his ways.

Lantern Lodge

Looking good so far. Does anyone else have any submissions that they wish to through in the ring?

I'll get something together the weekend, if that's not too late.

Lantern Lodge

Nope never to late. As far as favored enemies hobgoblins and humans.

thanks, just change his backstory to the idea that he ran into those things. By the way, when picking two humanoid creatures, wouldn't it be Humanoid (goblin subtype) or hobgoblin. In other words, how specific favored enemy when picking humanoids, like would it apply to all goblinoids, or does it want me to be so specific that I would have to pick hobgoblins?

If there are still places left, I'd like to join any of the games. Mulling a few concepts over in my head. but I can be flexible if any of the groups have 'gaps'.

I am really wanting in, just still working on something. Hope to have a submission by tomorrow.

Allrianne is a rough sketch of character stats (in profile). Will refine, add background and amend avatar in the next few days.

Alternatively, if there's a role that needs filling let me know and I'll adjust.

Sczarni

So I am for sure making a Sorcerer. I am trying to decided between Wild Magic and Dragon. How would you handle the wild magic. I think it would be fun to roll on the table every time I cast a spell, and have a character scared to use his magic.

Lantern Lodge

I think it says in the book that every time you cast a spell I roll a d20. If it comes up a 1 then a wild magic surge occurs.
