What: Welcome to psionics! This adventure is intended as a first taste of the system of psionics and power points, as presented
in Ultimate Psionics. It is intended for four 1st level psionic characters and is meant to highlight different aspects of psionics to let you and your players learn about this subsystem of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. You will need a copy of Ultimate Psionics or you can utilize the Pathfinder SRD. I am looking for a party of 4 adventures. This can be subject to change if I get some really good applicants.
Why: I am a long time gamer and I have all always been intrigued by Psionics. I recently bought the Dreamscarred Press Bundle on the Open Gaming Store, and I have to say, "Wow, what a great product." I have been trolling the recruitment boards and getting into games is challenging enough and then to add in a niche system like Psionics, well, it is easier to run a game than get in a game. So I plan on running this adventure to have fun and to learn the DP Psionic system better, and if everything goes well, and we all have a blast, then I would strongly consider continuing with Dreamscarred's AP, Third Dawn.
Who: First me, then you.
I started gaming a long, long time ago. Like D&D Basic long time ago. I have played D&D, AD&D, skipped most of 2nd Edition, D&D 3.0, and Pathfinder for the last few years, in addition to a smattering of other games systems (minis, Star Wars, ect.). I am a multiple times a day poster, experienced PbP GM (1-star PFS; running PbP homebrew) and player (Multiple high level PFS characters, and on Book 4 in RoW, and Book 2 in CC APs). My primary reason for running this is to have fun, secondary reason is to learn the Psionics system better. It is one thing to read a 452 page book, and another thing to run a game in the system.
My personal preference for games are 50-50 role and roll.
So what are my requirements for applying for this game, in importance order:
Active Posters I tend to be ill suited for PbP temperament wise at time. Because I can post easily during the day (Currently GMT -5), I would really like to get a table that can come close to that posting rate. As I am human, I understand things like family, work, vacation, life so as long as I get a heads up, no worries. Minimum 1 post per day. Really looking for more in combat situations.
Knowledge of PbP I will be cyber-stalking you to find if you PbP, and how well you PbP. I am looking for well crafted posts, syntax, and ability to move a game forward. I am a horrendous spellur and can easily mix up my grammars so no sweat there.
Knowledge of Pathfinder and Dreamscarred Psionics As I am a novice in the Dreamscarred Psionic world, a few experts here and there will help out greatly. If you don't know much about Psionics or Dreamscarred Psionics, don't let that stop you.
Still reading? Cool. Crunch time!
What books are allowed:
You are limited to Paizo Pathfinder material and Dreamscarred Press Psionic material (Pathfinder Content, no d20). I currently own almost all the Pathfinder Published Material and the following Dreamscarred Press Books:
- Ultimate Psionics
- Augmented Wilders, 7th, & Mythic
- Bestiary
What Level: 1st
What Classes: Any Paizo or Dreamscarred Psionic. I also have Sample Characters from the mod if you want to use them. They are Cryptic, Soulknife, Vitalist, and Psion. Just say in your post, " I'd love to run the Psion!" I care less about party balance and more about Players.
Sample characters are given at the end of the book if your players are unfamiliar with psionics, giving
a balanced and well-rounded party using the psionic classes found in Ultimate Psionics. If you decide to use your own characters instead of the sample characters provided, each member of the party should have some level of psionic ability, whether that is a psionic race, psionic class, or a feat like Wild Talent from Ultimate Psionics. Again, if you are an awesome PbP Player don't let this stand in your way.
What Race: Any race found in the above books, 15 RP or lower. No Race Builder Races. Don't get weird. Psionics are challenging enough without some obscure race.
Abilities: 20-point buy. No abilities lower than 8 with racial modifiers included. You are supposed to be Heroes!
Traits: 2 traits, no drawbacks.
Wealth: Max starting gold for your class.
Min/Max: On the fence. I love character creation, and applaud people with the time and acumen to create the various guides (which I use frequently), yet I dislike cheese builds. If you want to create an optimized character that is really good at a narrow ranges of abilities, have at it.
Still reading? Cool. What you need to do. (Hint: If you don't follow the requirements, even if you are Painlord ((who I know and have PbPed with)) I will cut you like an 18th century barber).
Recruitment will last until Midnight (GMT-5) on October 28th. Post before then. Please, in addition to posting a crunched out character following all the above rules, give me a background story. Here is some information about the adventure you are about to embark on.
You are hired to guard a caravan headed to the psionic town of Jace’s Stanchion
So what I would like you to do is to write your own introduction to how you find yourself on a caravan headed to the Psionic town of Jace’s Stanchion. You may have your origin in Golarion or you may read From the Deep Player’s Guide, a free download from Dreamscarred Press for use with the Third Dawn AP. Click here to download. Specifically, Jace’s Stanchion is found in the northern portions of the continent of Femon, west of the Barony of Soliel.
Questions?
Best of luck to all involved.
Character Creation will be posted on the Campaign Tab. Please check there for any updates.

I too am interested.
Do you have any problem with a non-Psionic character? I am not as well versed in Pathfinder as many on this site. And psionics less so.
Just a cheeky aside, there is a rather famous, or infamous, Bob Jones in Australia. He has run a martial arts group called "Bob Jones Karate School" for decades. They are renowned for attacking other martial arts schools. I presume the Bob Jones who started this thread is someone else, he sounds sane for a start.
Edgar Lamoureux |
Definitely dotting this for later. Would you be okay with one of the Psionic kineticist archetypes from Psionics Augmented: Kineticists, provided I can get information procured for you? The short story of it is a summoning kineticist, using Astral Constructs, but I can definitely find you a link.
I've been using the dreamscarred Psionics materials since they were released, and the 3.5e Psionics system before that. I've got a pretty solid grasp on most of the classes, though I'm not as familiar with, say, cryptics.
TheBobJones |
Sane?
"We're all mad here."
As for a karate master, not even close.
As I mentioned in the introductory post, I am good with any classes and archetypes, provided they are Paizo or Dreamscarred Psionics (Pathfinder Edition, not d20 or 3.5) and I have the source or you can link the source.
As for nonpsionic classes,
each member of the party should have some level of psionic ability, whether that is a psionic race, psionic class, or a feat like Wild Talent from Ultimate Psionics
So yes, you can be a nonpsionic class, but you should then choose a psionic race or take the Wild Talent feat.
I appreciate all the interest so far.

PLEASE! I've been going crazy wanting to run a Psion! I'm very new to PBP, but have played both a psion & a psychic warrior on tabletop in 3.5. Fairly familiar with Pathfinder as well. Posting frequency: Multiple times per day if needed! I can do this while at work or home!
I've just read all these posts so let me think a little about my character & then I'll post something more, bur DEFINITELY interested!

Sane? The Cheshire Cat wrote:"We're all mad here."As for a karate master, not even close.
I did not say the Australian Bob Jones was a karate master, I said he ran a karate school. From what I hear, a rather bad one.
In martial arts the term "master", Japanese Shihan, Chinese Si-Gung, has a particular meaning and is the highest praise. Very few people, perhaps two dozen living at most, should be using it to describe themselves.
On the campaign, I should have read your post more closely.
Would the Sorcerer Psychic bloodline be sufficiently psionic? I found an excellent character idea using that bloodline in "Advice" here. It sounds very psionic in flavour to me, but of course it is up to the GM.

Bloodline Arcana: Whenever you cast a [Force] or [Mind-affecting] spell, increase the DC of that spell by +1. In addition, you gain Wild Talent as a bonus feat.
Looks good to me!

This should be fun! I love psionics (even going back to the AD&D having to roll 00% to get psionics - funny how often my friends and I were able to do that!).
I am rather familiar with the Dreamscarred psionics and even moreso with the 3.x versions it is based on. (Was even really close to writing Races of the Mind: Dromites for Dreamscarred, but real life conflicts didn't leave the time back then).
I definitely want to submit a dromite, but am debating the class. I had a war soul soulknife dromite I rolled up once but never go to play. But psions are also a ton of fun, and I recently have been drawn to giving the cryptic class a try. Hmmm.... decisions, decisions...

You know, it's a funny story, how I ended up here. Once upon a time, when I was a young Ophiduan in the protectorate, I guarded the wall. Now this is how many of us start so it is not, in and of itself, a particularly amazing story. I, however, used to have this habit of spitting over the wall. Each day I would see how far my particular projectiles could get, striving to do better each day, until one day I forgot to look below before I flung my phlegm. It struck a minor overseer from some upstart city that I've still never seen, but it was enough to get me off the wall and mucking stables for a while.
I had enough of that, let me tell you. So I joined a ship witha bunch of maenads, you know the type. I guarded them against fearsome sea creatures, helped with their... umm... "acquisitions" of goods from coastal cities who didn't think we were worth indulging in a little good spirited protection patronage, and otherwise just did the sort of things you expect a man with a bow to do. Also drank. More than a little. Well one day the ship's going down, there's a bunch of fires, you know not that any of them were my fault, but anyway the ship sort of burned down, which still amazes me how something can burn on the sea, but I'm getting off topic. So I wash up on shore, nothing but my bow and the clothes on my back. I try to get some work, but wind up in debt to the local inn for my room and board. Okay mostly for my drink. They set me up with this here caravan to pay off my tab and get me somewhere else. I'm really hoping that it goes well because they said things about jail, and I'm really too pretty to go to jail aren't I?
Fraust |
Going to rewrite a character I made for a Wrath of the Righteous game oddly enough. Mechanically he's an elan psion, though thematically he's what happens when someone does the elan conversion on a goblin...which mostly translates to him being funny colored and have unorthodox views on fire and writing.
Joynt Jezebel |
Oh, the Paizo Psychic Bloodline from Occult Adventures? Again, if that is your class, you have no Psionic abilities. You would have to take either a psionic race, or a feat like Wild Talent as all Heroes in this adventure must have some psionic ability.
As the insightful Mr Oyzar pointed out, I was talking about the Paizo psychic bloodline. But I can play the Dreamscarred one, now I have seen it. :)
I do have some questions.
1 You say you can have your origin on Golarion and this is much easier for me to come up with. However, the adventure takes place on Ksaren. How does a first level character get from Golarion to Ksaren? Better to ask the GM than come up with something that may make no sense in his setting.
2 The "From the Deep Players Guide" says p7, under Classes, that magic just does not work on Ksaren and you can't play magic classes. Presumably, a sorcerer with the psychic bloodline counts as psionic, or else the idea would have been rejected earlier. However, the first sentence of the psychic bloodline says you have magic, but with a psychic feel.
I don't mean to be pedantic, but its best to get it right now.
3 If I do play a sorcerer, I still have to cast spells with verbal and material components? That is the RAW of the bloodline.
4 Then there is the question of the False [Ramizan} Priest Archetype. Do Golarion gods apply? If there are no clerical items like scrolls and wands around the archetype has no point.
Sorry to ask so many questions.
TheBobJones |
@ Joynt Jezebel Never apologize for questions, especially questions that weren't answered in my Introductory Post.
@ Everyone else TL;DR
Let's take these in order:
1. Great question. My Primary reason for running this, and gaming in general, is to have fun. Secondary reason is to learn the Dreamscared Psionics rules. As you read in my Introductory Post, I am a long, long time gamer. I cut my teeth on Greyhawk, and learned as much as I could about Oerth. Then I totally got into Dragonlance, and read as many novels as I could and learned about Krynn. Funny story about me drunk emailing Richard Knaak. Then Forgotten Realms and Faerûn.
Now I find myself immersed in Golarion, and Pathfinder. Not to mention D&D rules, AD&D rules, 3.0 Rules, and now Pathfinder rules.
There is only so much knowledge someone can care to have about fantasy settings and rules.
So what I want from your Introductory Story is how good are you at writing, not how much do you know about Fantasy World A or Fantasy World B. Is there going to be a disconnect between your story in Golarion and Ksaren? You bet. But I am going to handwave that. For some people this is A Continuity Issue Sir. One of my very good gaming friends would never, ever allow something this sloppy. But for the purposes of this adventure it works for me.
2. Does it now? Now to be honest I am really reading Ultimate Psionics, the mod, and looking up all these classes people are posting. I have only done a cursory reading of the Player's Guide for the AP so that was an oversight on my part.
Psionics–Magic Transparency: Though not explicitly
called out in the spell descriptions or magic item
descriptions, spells, spell-like abilities, and magic items
that could potentially affect psionics do affect psionics.
When the rule about psionics–magic transparency is in effect, it has the following ramifications.
Spell resistance is effective against powers, using
the same mechanics. Likewise, power resistance is
effective against spells, using the same mechanics as
spell resistance. If a creature has one kind of resistance,
it is assumed to have the other. (The effects have similar
ends despite having been brought about by different
means.)
All spells that dispel magic have equal effect against
powers of the same level using the same mechanics, and
vice versa.
The spell detect magic detects powers, their number,
and their strength and location within 3 rounds (though
a Spellcraft check is necessary to identify the discipline
of the psionic aura), while detect psionics detects spells,
their number, and their strength and location within 3
rounds (though a Spellcraft check is necessary to identify
the school of magic).
Dead magic areas are also dead psionics areas.
Unless specifically mentioned in a power’s description,
a power cannot be counterspelled when it is being
manifested, nor can powers be used to counterspell a
spell as it is being cast.
Unless specifically stated otherwise, feats such as
metamagic feats that specifically affect spells do not
affect powers, and feats such as metapsionic feats that
specifically affect powers do not affect spells.
Powers or psionic effects usually work as described no
matter how many other powers, psionic effects, spells,
or magical effects happen to be operating in the same
area or on the same recipient. Except in special cases, a
power does not affect the way another power or spell
operates. Whenever a power has a specific effect on
other powers or spells, the power description explains
the effect (and vice versa for spells that affect powers).
Several other general rules apply when powers, spells,
magical effects, or psionic effects operate in the same
place.
Powers that provide bonuses or penalties on attack
rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes
usually do not stack with themselves. More generally,
two bonuses of the same type don’t stack even if they
come from different powers, or one from a power and
one from a spell. You use whichever bonus gives you the
better result.
Different Bonus Types: The bonuses or penalties from
two different powers, or a power and a spell, stack if the
effects are of different types. A bonus that isn’t named
(just a “+2 bonus” rather than a “+2 insight bonus”)
stacks with any bonus.
Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In
cases when two or more similar or identical effects are
operating in the same area or on the same target, but
at different strengths, only the best one applies. If one
power or spell is dispelled or its duration runs out, the
other power or spell remains in effect (assuming its
duration has not yet expired).
Same Effect with Differing Results: The same power or
spell can sometimes produce varying effects if applied
to the same recipient more than once. The last effect in a series trumps the others. None of the previous spells
or powers are actually removed or dispelled, but their
effects become irrelevant while the final spell or power
in the series lasts.
One Effect Makes Another Irrelevant: Sometimes, a
power can render another power irrelevant.
Multiple Mental Control Effects: Sometimes psionic or
magical effects that establish mental control render one
another irrelevant. Mental controls that don’t remove
the recipient’s ability to act usually do not interfere
with one another, though one may modify another. If a
creature is under the control of two or more creatures,
it tends to obey each to the best of its ability, and to the
extent of the control each effect allows. If the controlled
creature receives conflicting orders simultaneously, the
competing controllers must make opposed Charisma
checks to determine which one the creature obeys.
Powers and spells with opposite effects apply normally,
with all bonuses, penalties, or changes accruing in the
order that they apply. Some powers and spells negate or
counter each other. This is a special effect that is noted
in a power’s or spell’s description.
Instantaneous Effects: Two or more magical or
psionic effects with instantaneous durations work
cumulatively when they affect the same object, place, or
creature.
Short Answer: Psionics and Magic work, are connected, but are different.
3. You can play a sorcerer, and cast spells. Where does it say that you don't get Eschew Materials? Unless there is a compelling reason for you not to get that that I am unaware of, I am good with you having it.
4. Again since we are blending worlds, you can use any Paizo archetype, keep the Golarion 'god', or change to a different one to suit the setting. There will be clerics and cleric type magic items.
Joynt Jezebel |
Thanks for the reply Bob. I have been roleplaying for as long as you, more or less. And I am still learning how to GM better.
On the answers:-
1 I got it.
I will write a backstory that tells you what makes my character tick.
How I fit into Golarion is incidental and has near zero effect on the campaign. Makes my life easier.
2 Kind of what I guessed. But I wanted to get it straight before making a character. Your campaign will have the "normal" magic and psionics transperancy and both are around and work. The AP is a psionic world where magic does not work, perfectly valid idea but not one you are using.
3 The Paizo Psychic bloodline has a bloodline arcana whereby your spells don't have verbal or somatic components, but emotional components. The Dreamscarred Psychic bloodline [the one I will be taking] has normal spells cast normally with a psychic flavour and they are magic not psionic. That is what I was trying to clarify, see question 2. And it is all clear now.
So there is no reason my character wouldn't have eschew materials. Except that the False Priest Archetype replaces eschew materials.
4 Got it thanks.
My character joined the Cult of Razmir to learn their tricks as per the False Priest Archetype. Turns out Razmir is actually not a God but a very powerful arcane caster. And Razmir's "priests" are actually sorcerers capable of faking having divine magic, the cult is one big fraud. It fits very well with the trickster concept.
We actually have not talked about alignment but Razmir is LE. That is not going to go down well in most groups. However, I am a more normally acceptable CN.
I will be back soon with a character design for approval.

Aren't Gifted Blade and War Mind both change Psychic Strike? Or did I miss something?
You are correct; however, there were links provided to me to explain how this can be a 'legal' build which I am allowing due to the nature of the campaign.
Though I understand the mechanics, I will leave it to Johnnycat93 to explain it better, should he choose to do so.
Madcaster I do appreciate the oversight though. As I am a professed novice in the Psionics realm it is that type of questioning that helps me to understand the system better. Also not to worry, I really don't care much about party balance so should you and Jonnycat93 write some great stories I would take both Soulknifes.

It is even starting to look like a more or less balanced party, with 6 of the 8 characters submitted being psionic, which pretty much conforms to the campaign idea.
It may be worth considering closing recruitment, with a total of 10 players.
One thing I have not mentioned is I am located in Perth, Western Australia. So I am likely to be posting at different times to some.

I want to be a soulknife. Probably one of the Psionic races. Either a big, bruising half-giant or a quick, Dex-heavy Xeph. Decisions, decisions... How long running should this be? Specifically, are we going far enough that I might move into the Pyrokineticist Psionic prestige class?
The Opened Mind starts at level 1 and goes to level 2. If things go well in The Opened Mind, I have strongly considered running the Dreamscarred AP Third Dawn, so potentially yes.

Not a chance. As I mentioned in the Introductory Post, players will be chosen based upon two criteria: character conforming to the character creation guidelines, and a well written "What I did over summer break" caravan joining post.
One thing I have not mentioned is I am located in Perth, Western Australia. So I am likely to be posting at different times to some.
No worries form me, I have PbPed with players from Finland, the UK, and one of my players is currently in Oz right now.

Is a non pisonic character wanted? Been thinking a rat folk alchemist, with healing as a big part of his talents...
As I stated in the Introductory Post, this is for Psioninc characters. So your character need to be a psionic class, race, or take a feat like Wild Talent.
Based upon your current build - no. Feel free to modify it if you are interested.
GM Mowque |
'I'd love to run a vitalist
Actually, looking it over it fits my vision for the character even better then I expected.
My idea is a halfling who was once a healer for a criminal gang. Basically a mob doctor. Eventually he found religion and gave up those nasty employers. Still, he has a lust for excitement and adventure, and a talent for healing in very nasty situations. The best outlet for this is adventuring.
I plan on Mender Method and such things. I have never used psonics before but it seems interesting.
I am an experienced GM and player with Pazio stuff, this is my first run with 3rd party. I have a lot of games going but I am fully up to date with all them and perfectly able to add another (check out my track record, some of those games are over a year old and still running daily posts!).
Shall I dive into making crunch?
oyzar |
Hmm, I was actually thinking to go for a halfling myself. No one are as helpful as halflings after all ;). That'll help me helping out others and community minded will make the zeal and other encouragments last. I'll make sure to make it a lass, who knows, maybe it'll be a match Mowque :)? The character will be very much in the spirit of Community Guardian, but instead of healing, it'll be focused on protecting allies, taking hits for them and buffing everyone up.
Now for an actual question. Are we using the Golarion pantheon? If my character worships Desna I can make her hit people with her charm until they see stars by utilizing Desna's Shooting Star (listed as Way of the Shooting Star due to rights issues). It'll let me attack and aid both at range and nearby, which will hopefully somewhat make up for the tiny base damage of the starknife. Protecting her collective will be more important than dishing out damage anyway. Edit: Turns out this was already answered above, sorry. I'll make a zealot of freedom following Desna then.
@Johnnycat93: Since he's only taking 4 players, odds are he won't take 2 soulknives, so you might not want to tie your applications too closely together.
TheBobJones |
Now for an actual question. Are we using the Golarion pantheon?
That is a really good question, and one that I already answered in a pervious post, but I am still not 100% convinced it is a good answer. It was an adequate answer at best.
Upon further reflection, I think that I am going to alter cannon to make this work.
So Golarion contains eight continents. It now has a ninth. Tion. From the AP Player's Guide.
So you can use Golarion gods, or not.
@Johnnycat93: Since he's only taking 4 players, odds are he won't take 2 soulknives, so you might not want to tie your applications too closely together.
@ Everyone - Completely untrue. I would take 4 Soulknives or 4 Psions. I care nothing for party balance. I am way more interested in your Roleplay.
Now I do understand mechanics and party roles, so after I have made my selections people are free to change their builds to other legal builds using my Character Creation requirements. If they want to. But I will not make my sections based upon Character Concepts or Party Balance other than to make sure they are compliant to my guidelines.
I also mentioned that I might take more than 4, depending on the quality of the submissions. I would rather take an extra player or even open a second table rather than say 'No' to a top notch applicant.

Feedback, commentary, criticism is welcome. I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for in a character background but I hope I'm at least on the right track.

Argh, I'm completely stumped as to how to turn my crunch into something compelling. Mhmm. Gladiator, slave, blade-for-hire, someone hiding out as a simple warrior, exile, criminal... Argh. This is frustrating. I'm on the lookout for something to do with my Vara that doesn't leave her stuck in a social position, and all I'm coming up with is clichés.
Eh. Maybe I can make up a useful social position for her to be stuck in? But then again, she's a warrior type, so that'd mean being muscle... Unless she's also a bit of a priest.
Huh. Warrior philosopher, that seems like there might be something there. What's she doing as a caravan guard? Ritual journey of discovery seems contrived, but then again, it's worked a lot of times before, might work here as well. Warriors are usually either mercenaries, enforcers(guards, police), part of some political entity's army, or part of some order that promotes something, because violence is a political thing. Unless it's a personal thing, but then how did she end up spending all her time on getting that good? Maybe it's not, she could just be a ranger or something, who happened to be into self-defense with a big sword.
Anyway, don't mind me, I'm just trying to put some thoughts to paper.

She is half-giant. Plenty of great material there.
