Greetings you godless curs and welcome to my recruitment for the Skulls and Shackles AP. If you are reading this then it is safe to assume that you lily livered landlubbers are sick of your safe and stable lives and you thirst for a touch of adventure.

I am new to DMing PbP, this will be my first game, and although I have run Skulls and Shackles before, I do ask for patience. I am also not all that consistent, I can be flaky and absent, but I will not disappear for more than a day or two at a time, I can promise that. If you can deal with both of these small details, then I can offer you a (hopefully) fun game. I am big on party building and heavy role playing, but not to the exclusion of roll playing, if you catch my meaning. With the success of the Humble Bundle (Everyone should be proud of that. Well done guys!), we have a lot of new people on the site, so I am going to cater to them but not exclude more experienced players at the same time. I am looking for interesting character ideas and party dynamics, rather than an ironclad knowledge of the rules.

So without further adieu, let’s get down to brass tacks -

The Skulls and Shackles AP is a Sea Based piratey adventure that will see you shanghaied at the start of the first book, and forced to work on the decks of the Wormwood, the flagship of Free Captain Barnabas Harrigan.

EDIT FOR ROUND 2 - Hey guys, so here is the recruitment thread for Group two. As noted, please dot with the character you intend to put forward. If you are new to this thread and not from my other recruitment thread, well howdy, welcome to the madness. Please find all you need to know below. Cheers all.

Mechanics:

Races- All Core races accepted but I will allow non standard races on a case by case basis. I am pro Human I will say, but that does not mean I am anti any race. Except for Drow. I am not a fan of Drow, just my personal feelings. I will still accept a Drow character, if they have an interesting enough concept behind them.

Ability Scores- This recruitment will be using the point buy system, detailed here on the table titled “Ability Score Costs”. Furthermore, no character may have a score higher than 20 or lower than 8, after racial bonuses and negatives have been applied.

Accepted Material- I will accept any and all Paizo material* but will have to accept 3pp only after looking it over thoroughly. I haven’t used much of it so I am not comfortable with it. I will say that Path of War is a no go for me.

*Technology guide doesn’t really fit in this part of the world but I can be convinced

Classes- As stated above I will accept any and all Paizo material, with the exception of the original Summoner. Unchained Summoner is fair game and replaces the original Summoner. Archetypes tied to the Technology guide may not make much sense, but I could be argued around to them.
Skills- I really like the use of background skills, I think it brings a new depth to characters when they have extra skill points for the option of profession skills and the like. Background skills and their explanation can be found [url=http://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/background-skills]here.[/ur]

HP- Full HD at every level. You are badass sword swinging pirates not sniveling dogs who can be killed easily.

Gold and Equipment- Full for your class at first level but you do not start with access to your gear, as per the AP.

Traits- Three traits, one of which must be a Campaign trait, from the Skulls and Shackles Players guide, and one drawback. Characters, like people, should have flaws so choose one that makes sense and build it into your PC.

Alignment- No CE allowed. That leaves you 7 other viable alignment options to go for, so it isn’t that big a deal. CE usually ends up just being disruptive and annoying, in my opinion, so I don’t want it. And as this is a pirate based campaign, LG is also not really something that makes sense.

If there is anything I have forgotten here, please let me know.

Mechanics are a small but important part of character creation. Listed below are the Fluff aspects of your character I would like filled out -

Character:

Backstory- A short backstory, telling me how your character came to be in this position, why he is in a position to be shanghaied. Also name drop one NPC from your background, who your character has some bond with.

Appearance- Height, weight, hair colour and eye colour. Does your character have any defining scars? Do they wear any jewelry or have any tattoos? How do they dress?

Motivation- What drives your character in general? Revenge? A need to be famous? A thirst for gold? What goals do they have before being shanghaied and now after the fact?

The last three are just for fun, but are a good exercise in terms of trying to feel more tied to a character.

So I think that is mostly it, just one thing left to do and that is deal with formatting. There are a lot of different ways to format a character sheet on the site, and I do not think my way is the best, but it is the way I am most comfortable using so… I have spoilered a template below, that can be copy/pasted into a profile and filled in.

Character Description:

Backstory- Linnet is a young woman who is very conscious of her heritage and status as the daughter of Arna Applesby, captain of an elven profiteering ship (pirates? merchants? depends who you ask) called the Maiden Voyage. She never knew her human father and has developed a mistrust towards humans. Due to her privileged position on her ship, she has grown somewhat spoiled and sheltered, although she will be sure to learn otherwise soon...

Appearance- Linnet is relatively short and stocky for a half-elf, a situation that frustrates her to no end. She has brown eyes and messy brown hair. While she travels lightly on her ship, she loads herself down with all sorts of miscellaneous goods when she steps on dry land - just in case.

Motivation- Linnet was living a comfortable life before being press-ganged, if not completely comfortable with herself. While she misses her mother and crew, wanting to get back to 'her' ship, she knows how likely the chances are.

She is money-hungry, wanting to keep living the high life on the high seas. She expects to be treated with the respect she believes she deserves, and she will do what she has to do to get it. Nonetheless, once she accepts someone, she is a staunch ally and a loyal friend. Whenever she can get her revenge on the one who wronged her, she would be glad to be part of a crew again.

Favourite Meal- a well-done steak with fresh greens (jerky and fish get boring after a while!)

I might be interested in submitting a character but I do have one question, in the submission guidelines it says to use the point buy system to generate abilities but doesn't indicate how many points are to be used, so I was just wondering about that.


It's 20 points for the point buy. Changing tide copy-pasted his original recruitment over from the first thread he made and didn't have the point value in that one originally.

Amara was a slave until the age of nine, when the ship of her Rahadoumi master sailed too close to the Shackles and was taken by pirates. Her master dead, Amara strove to survive on the streets of Ilizmagorti. Near starvation, she took refuge in an alley, shivering in the night. It was then she saw the mark of Besmara carved into the wall. She'd never prayed before, but she uttered a prayer to Besmara that day. Filled a burst of divine power, she rose from the trash on which she had rested, and vowed never to bow again. Working as a barmaid and later as a courtesan, she found a natural talent for manipulating people. Making the best of her life, she is devoted to Besmara, to freedom, and to doing whatever she wants. She has a particular hatred of slavery, and of the godless Rahadoumi who used reason to justify it. Pirate freedom!

She has a bright green parrot named Polly to whom she is devoted.

Small of stature, dark-haired with a white streak, and dark-eyed, she is not formidable in any way, until she fixes you with her eyes and uses her formidable powers of persuasion.

Extra drawback: Mark of Slavery:

"Whenever you fail a skill check, you take a –2 penalty on any skill check or attack roll you attempt before the end of your next turn unless it is a part of retrying the failed skill check."

Backstory Working in the bar as usual, flirting with the patrons and relieving them of their gold in exchange for "company." That's the last she can remember. It's all a fog!

Appearance- Short, small, attractive, dresses to flaunt her shape, but always has many knives. See above.

Motivation- Amara is driven mostly by two things: 1) doing whatever the heck she wants, and 2) killing slavers. Should she ever become a pirate, those she captured would be ransomed, killed, or freed, as the situation dictates, but never enslaved.

Background: Nameless believed, believed in the code of Ichimeiyo and the duty he had to land, lord, and the people under his lord's care. He believed right up until his lord's son ordered the slaughter of an entire village because they could not pay their tribute. On that day he betrayed his code and turned on his liege lord's son, fighting for the peasants lives, one man against twenty. Needless to say, he failed. Every man, woman and child in the village was put to the sword to set an example for the other villages. Nameless, however, was kept alive. His lord's son said honorable death was too good for a dog such as him, so he had his men beat Nameless to within an inch of his life and left him among the corpses of the villagers. Nameless woke to the sound of crows, a broken, desperate man. Without a lord and without honor he was an outlaw. More significantly though, his very being had been shaken, all that he believed in seemed to have been a lie, the enlightenment of Ichimeiyo just hollow, empty words used to prop up a system of despots which he had believed in with all his heart and now it was gone. Nameless dragged himself from that field of slaughter, looking for a ditch in which to lay down and die. He was found unconscious by a poor rice farmer, who took pity on this poor young man, having heard of the lone samurai who had tried to do the right thing. Nameless was nursed back to health by the farmer and his family, and while his body healed, his mind and soul dwelt under a dark cloud. He began to drink, seeking to drown the screams and the visions of bloody, hacked bodies. Then, one day, a group of the daimyo's men came to the farmer's village. The commotion caused penetrated into the drunken haze of his mind and Nameless stumbled forth to find the farmer on his knees between two samurai with a third about to deliver the death blow. Without thought Nameless bellowed a challenge to the leader of the band, calling him a coward and a betrayer of Ichimeiyo, a dog without honor. Nameless demanded a sword and told them if he could beat each man in single combat it would prove they were unfit to call themselves samurai. Unable to refuse this affront to their honor, especially in front of so many witnesses, the samurai cleared the village square, gave Nameless a sword and the duels proceeded. To this day Nameless does not know how he did what he did, but he was able to beat them all, through his drunkenness, through his despair and self loathing he fought as he never had before. As the sun set on that day, the villagers buried the dead samurai in unmarked graves. Knowing the daimyo would now be hunting for him, Nameless left the village, thanking the farmer and his folk for their kindness. He took only the daisho from the leader of the samurai he had killed and the clothes on his back, but he also took a new purpose. From this day on he would wander the world, living only Ichimeiyo as he believed it in his heart and lending his sword to the purpose of justice, the defense of the weak and the wronged. It would be his penance for failing to save the village and for the betrayal of his lord for which he still could not forgive himself. That day Nameless took with him all of this, and left his name behind.

I've been wanting to give this character a try for a long time now and it might be a good fit, I have it set up that he's a vagabond so he can show up in pretty much any place and it might be interesting to have a samurai pirate.

I already did the background bit, so here's the rest.

I would like to apply with Diana Seamyst, a Waves oracle with a history tied to the area. I'd love to hear your thoughts on her. While I hope to tweak her background some she is essentially complete.

Backstory:
Cuffs mother was a sea witch who me was heavily devoted to besmara. She had sought out an orc man to sire her a child, her success eventually lead to the birth of the dull, but strong and charismatic Cuff.

His mother seldom payed attention to cuff in his younger years other than to make sure he survived. Cuff spent his time bullying the weaker children in riddleport to give him to small copper pieces they would gain occasionally from begging. Eventually the children knew that it was either hand over the money or a bloody nose is what you would spend it on.

When cuff reached the age of 15 his mother began to pay a bit more attention to the young man. She would feed him more, compliment him and show what seemed to be genuine motherly love...

Then she asked him to kill a man...

Cuff, despite his actions had always yearned for his mothers attention and thought that murder wasn't to far removed from what he would be willing to do for it. So his life went for years and years, killing vagrints and bringing them to mother as a "sacrifice to besmara" so she would say, Cuff didn't care.

He had recently gotten his hands on a bit of coin he found on a man his mum had him kill. He thought it would mean a fun night out so he decided to go to the bar on the dockside...


A question, would you allow Lizardfolk? To be precise I'd like to run the lizardfolk as presented at the back of the ARG but fixed to comply with the bestiary entry. This just means adding the Hold Breath ability (setting them at 9 rp instead of 8).


I have finalized Diana with the exception of NPC in her story. I did not see named NPCs in the Player's guide so am unsure exactly what you mean there. I did mention at least two NPCs that should be in the starting area that are known and important to Diana.

My final touch was to put her sheet in your format, which I think I like better than Herolab. I am excited about the prospect and await your decision.
