"We're ready, ain't we Clem?"

I've got 25 days of food on me and I can carry another 40 pounds while staying in Light Load.

Noya goes with Bibic to pick up some more trail rations and some shopping.

"All these extra trail rations are adding up and my back pack is getting heavy."

So another 6 trail rations (3gp).
And she'll need to ask someone to hold her extra rations to keep under light load.

Clement eyes Spasi.

"Sounds like a ship Spasi would approve of, right Rhesus?"

Clement accompanies the others and purchases enough hard iron rations to last himself an entire month, always expecting trips to last longer than they are supposed to.

"Yeah, Reese and I are ready. The question is if this swamp is ready for us!"

Clement puffs out his chest and points to the enamel work on both his and Rhesus's new armor.

But then again, I'm one to talk to about, going against one's nature.

"Hey Clem. I don't think I mentioned this recently...but I like how you keep us alive. It's good work...just like I would do if I could," Spasi earnestly compliments. "Just wish you could, you know, let me get a clean shot off once in a while. Maybe you could work on that more...?"

Bibic too is packed, though not as carefully as Spasi perhaps.

He munches on a roll as he listens to the party chat by the waterfront.

Where's that skiff? Did we order one or are we all just standing here waiting for one to arrive?

He idly scratches himself, and then idly wonders if he has an infection of some kind.

I'm going to assume we are all ready to go. There is also the Ioun stone that someone should carry/use

The Wanton Ways isn't much to look at her crew even less so, but your cabin door's lock is sound enough and your voyage to the cape is uneventful. You just hope that Captain can be relied upon to still be waiting for you once you've finished your task.

The trip takes about a day. The captain brings the ship in a wide circle around the shoals and reefs that flank the cape where the great stone statue stands. Even at a distance, it is an impressive sight. Finding a somewhat sheltered cove up the coast aways to anchor in, the launch skiff is lowered. It's a bit crowded in the boat, between the first mate, the oarsmen, yourselves and your gear, but you manage to make you way to shore.

Dumping your gear on the wet sand, the first mate gives you some parting words before climbing back into the boat. "A bit of advice for you. This swamp is full of frogmen and lizardmen and there are those that tell of a hideous witch that lives on an island that guards the way to the Lady. So watch yourselves out there, or don't. I get paid either way."

You are now several miles north of you locations, with quite a bit of swamp to traverse. You can just follow the shoreline, or try to save time by cutting through wilderness. If you choose option 2, I'm going to need a survival check."

"OK then. Since none of us are particularly good at wandering in the wilderness - right?" he hesitates and waits for someone to speak up.

"Right. Let's walk along the coast and then head into the swamp when we have no other choice."

I thought the ioun stone went with the shard piece. I still have mine that went with the first shard. If they do not need to go together, I suppose I should offer it up if someone would prefer to have it. It's a +2 int (knowledge, history) ioun stone. I like it (helps with my knowledge checks) but I'm fine if i suits someone else better.

Spasi does not seem to enjoy the trip over the water, glad to finally be off the boat.

"I dunno why, Rhesus, but that trip wasn't much fun. Maybe I drank too much last night...the half-elvette wanted me to go out in style...and well, you know...she called in a she-halfling and we..." Spasi goes over to some ferns and vomits ferociously...a cascade of acidic colored liquid coming from his bowels, accompanied by echoing noises from his back end.

"Oh yeah...one more of them and I'll be fine..."

Oooh...the charisma stone should go to Clem. Totally. The guy could use a bit of presence.

Spasi shakes his still greenish face to Bibic, indicating he has no good survival skills outside the big city.

"The safe route will be safe, right? Let's do that."

The Shoanti eyes the swamp dubiously, then turns to the coast.

Clement eyes the platinum ring on Rhesus's finger and then focuses on the wayfinder cinched to his friend's belt.

"I feel better now. Stronger, knowing that you and I both have magic stones here..."

Clement pats his waist and gives Rhesus a large grin.

After feigning a punch in the arm, Clement approaches the edge of the clearing, seemingly possessed of greater confidence.

He narrows his eyes at the jungle.

"Lizards and witches, is it? Nothing we couldn't handle. Although, the air is clean and crisp along the coast here, not like the smell of rot from Magnimar's docks, or the perfume and incense that I still can't seem to purge from my nostrils..."

Clement distractedly rubs his nose and takes a deep breath and hones in on Rhesus's vote.

"I'm with Rhesus. Coast it is."

Clement begins trudging ahead, leaving heavy prints in the sand before gesturing Rhesus to follow.

@Bibic: They do. You can take them out, but then the curses will reactivate. For all the future forays you'll be getting the stones ahead of time, so you can use them until you need to socket them.

You trudge along, keeping the shore line insight. After several hours, you come across the seaward side of a wide lagoon. On the far side of the lagoon, a large curving spit of land extends out into the ocean and at its utmost tip, stands the mighty stone statue of the Lady.

Closer at hand, you can see smoke rising out of the chimney of a small thatched roof hut. The hut is situated on a small mossy island that sits at the edge of the lagoon. From your vantage point, you can see that the island is connected to the mainland by a bridge of sorts.

"This is the problem with chain mail... they really get in there..."

Abandoning the bulk of his efforts once he realizes they are futile, Clement concentrates on the clean-up of the enameled 'Rhesus' so that their enemies will know their names.

"Are there any statues in front of her house? I once heard a story about a witch who would collect visitors by turning them into statues."

Clement narrows his eyes as he scans the area.

"She at least talked to them every day, though..."

He gives Bibic a nod as the archer calls out a greeting, expecting nothing bad to come from their verbal salutation.

We've got ourselves some smooth operators here.

The witch gives you a long, hard look, "Well, you seem sensible enough and I don't need you tromping through my swamp causing all kinds of trouble in your ignorance. You had best come in so we can talk. My name is Maroux and there's soup, so I might as well feed you as well."

She waves a beaconing hand and enters her hut. Sensing nothing amiss with the offer, you follow. The hut is surprisingly spacious and though is gets a bit cramped, you all manage to squeeze around a rough, driftwood table. Maroux hands out clay bowls of thin stew with rough bread. She digs in lustily and urges you to dig in before it gets cold.

You eat the stew:

It is awefull and barely edible. Make a DC 12 Fortitude save to avoid becoming sickened for 1 hour.

As she eats, Maroux talks and as the meal passes, she opens up more and more, eventually telling you what you want to know about the region.

"The xulgaths (who you city folk know better as troglodytes) and boggards have bickered over control oft he Lady's Cape for years. They're pretty evenly matched if you ask me. I've bloodied their noses when they've stuck them in my business, so for the most part they've let me be-that's what the skulls and artwork on my bridge are for.

"But then, a few months back, we had some new visitors. A troop of women knights or something, clad in plate and wearing red-plumed helms. Their leader was a woman named Oriana. Pretty enough, at least till she took her helmet off and showed off her scars. She sat down to dinner with me just like you are. Anyway. She told me she and her sisters were from
Korvosa, soldiers of the rightful queen who'd been tumbled off the throne a few years back. They'd had to flee the city once their queen wasn't in charge, and fell into mercenary work until Oriana got the idea to plunder the Lady's Light for the treasure they think's hidden inside of it. Made me chuckle a bit, since I've heard there's secret rooms in the Lady filled with treasure too. I've tried to find a way into the place before-there's caves under the
area that are supposed to connect to the chambers below the Light, but those caves belong to the trogs and frogs and bigger critters. I didn't get far, and since then I've steered clear of the
Light-the b*@!+ gives me the willies, anyway. Some powerful magic going on in there.

"Anyway, Oriana was intent on getting under the Lady's skirts, and she asked me if I knew a way in. I told her about the caves and warned her of the trogs 'n frogs, but that didn't seem to bother her. Unlike me, she had herselfa whole group ofironclad soldiers to back her up, after all. So offshe goes, and damned if she and her mercenaries don't make friendly with the frogs! Got them some better weapons, gave them some fighting tips, and then helped them launch an attack on the trogs. In return, the frogs gave her permission to use their tunnels.

"But here's the kicker. Oriana found a way inside the Lady or at least she says so. She came my way ten days ago with a story that she'd found none other than the Runelord of Lust herself in there, and that the runelord had recruited Oriana to help her reclaim her lands and rebuild her kingdom! Oriana asked me to join their crusade! I politely refused and wished her well and she went on her way. Gods above an' below, I couldn't get her out of my hut quick enough!

"The way I see it, there's three possibilities. First, Oriana is lying, for whatever reason. The second, Oriana, sad child, is off her nut. And the third, someone or something in there is masquerading as Sorshen the Grand Whore of Thassilon and has tricked Oriana into being her minion. Well, I suppose there's a fourth possibility-that Sorshen really is alive and well in the Lady's Light, but ifyou believe that claptrap, there's a bridge across the Straits of Aroden I'd like to sell ya!"

And I'm guessing the people revolted and am curious about the reason?"

"I don't think any one could naturally live for a thousand years,

Clement begins digging into the soup at Rhesus's suggestion.

"Mmrph... "

He gives the woman a nod, doing his best to disguise his response to the otherwise unappealing taste.

(Clement is immune to the soup's effects thanks to his "curse")

He gives Rhesus a crooked grin as Spasi digs in and subsequently bolts from the room.

"I agree with Reese here. We hit up these caves, hopefully avoid too much bloodshed with the locals and see what we can dig up. If there's something evil controlling minds, we can deal with it.. with our... err... ironclad... will."

Hmmm.. I wonder if I can find something to ward us against deception like that?

@Bibic: There is nothing in particular that you need to know. You knowledge of the area supports what the witch has told you. The whole area is swamp and infested with troglodytes and boggards, so it is generally avoided.

Maroux sketches out a rough map of the immediate area indicating a few landmarks: her hut, the main boggard village, the Lady's LIght and the three entrances to the caverns that she knows.

She points at the entrances, "This one leads to the caverns that the trogs have claimed. They are in pretty rough shape, with Oriana's crew helping the frogs, they've been taking a beating. This one is the frogs main entrance and the one that the mercenaries are using. This third is used by neither group, but something uses it, since it isn't grown over. I haven't seen it, but whatever it is, it must be pretty big."

"So the third entrance, given what you said, might be the lair of a super predator. A thought I am not completely comfortable thinking about, as there are numerious known super predators."

Spasi looks at Noya, wondering if she has a point.

C'mon woman...what are you trying to say we *do*? Spit it out.

"Sure, there might be something tough there, but we're a pretty tough group - and I like that option better than trying to mess with the balance of one of the other routes."

"I say we head down the third path. Maybe the others don't even know it's there. We beat the big beasty and have our run of the place - at least until we bump up against the rear-guard of one of the other groups."

"If it's really tough, we can take it fresh too. Yes, I like this idea a lot."

Spasi turns to look at Bibic as the elf offers a plan of action. He wipes the last of his regurgitations on the back of his hand while giving Rhesus a look.

"That's a decent idea, Bibic," Spasi agrees. "Not the way I would have chosen, but what can possibly go wrong? We got Rhesus here to lead the way and us to back him up. Let's do that."

Spasi takes a swig from his waterskin and spits it out. Then takes another as a drink, trying to rehydrate.

He looks at the map the nice witch lady drew and traces his way to the third/middle entrance.

"A'ight. I guess we go thataway," Spasi points.

"Though the balance in the area has already been disturbed by Knighted Women,
So we should see if we can correct it, that and we did get a request to find someone to look for herbs in the swamp.
So getting one side to look for the herbs would be full filling the request.
And the Trogs are at their lowest point right now and this could be a great chance to redeem a whole tribe."

"So Noya, I don't understand, what do you want to do? Do you not like the idea of going down the third path? You want to kill some Trogs? I could do that I suppose."

Bibic hesitates.

"Given the options, the requests that have been made, the area's current state, my own religious beliefs, and my oaths.
I think helping the Trogs would be the best answer, as they are currently in a bad spot and are in need of help.
I am also betting that they could be the Herb harvestors that were requested, and this is a chance to redeem a whole tribe of Trogs onto a proper path."

"If we go down the third path, the super predator could be a old black dragon, but it could be something else.
Since we don't know it's very dangerous, if we make the wrong preparations or actions.
That and if we take out the super predator we could disturb the natural order here, as a Keystone Predator helps keep things in check."

She's a Paladin, and Good paladins protect the weak, and try to help the unfortunate, as well as try to help redeem souls.
That and following a lord of forgiveness.

"Works for me. So we're going to help the Trogs, not kill them? OK then."

Bibic pushes his soup away and prepares to head to Troglodyte-central.
