DM B's PFS GD5 PbP: Thralls of the Shattered God (Inactive)

Game Master Beckett

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5-9 <8-9>
After two years of blood and bravery, the Fifth Mendevian Crusade has struck a terrible blow to the Worldwound’s demons and reclaimed lost territory. The Pathfinder Society, as one of the crusade’s partners in this endeavor, has earned the right to explore and salvage what it can of the lost Sarkorian sites under Mendev’s control, and it has identified one ruin as a priority. In fact, the site seems to actively call to one agent in particular, a scarred survivor of abyssal experiments. Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury has asked the PCs to accompany this agent into the wasteland, where perhaps she might learn how to control her demonic half—or purge it completely.
Content in “Thralls of the Shattered God” also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Silver Crusade faction.

After the visions:

"To discredit the information learned in the visions is to misunderstand their purpose as someone or something caused us to see what will be stained with what cannot come to pass," Diri explains. "I regret that I was not determined enough to see more of it before the pain overwhelmed my consciousness which bears the question of the duration of my unconsciousness?"

Diri scrawls notes regarding the details she remembers.

Now:

"We need to ascertain the cause and solution to her affliction soon lest her psyche shatter completely," Diri states, observing the fleshy mass covering the doors. "Once again we will have to clear the demonic taint from the walls before proceeding," she adds, looking to Rilas and Aikio, who have proven to be able to rid said growths.

There was a small stone in the futures room. It seems to have three functions. The first is a continual flame so that it acts like acts like an Everburning Torch. Secondly, it seems to function as a key of some sort, though perhaps not alone in a set. Lastly, it also acts like a clear spindle ioun stone.

Aikio shudders, maybe at Valais' second personality speaking up, maybe in that she agrees with it. "I don't think we should go through this door."

Sorry, I was meaning to suggest that you do discover it, you just find it much harder to do than you normally would.

Just to clear things up, you do have one of the two "keys", and you could attempt to pick the other one. It is not a magical lock, through the door itself does have a few magical auras. It's also possible that the other "key" is somewhere around here too.

Since we have had to make a choice and there are two keys, we can go back to the statue and turn right. Perhaps the second key will be down there.

Sorry, my computer broke over the weekend, and I'm still having issues with it after doing a complete wipe. Even now, my spacebar is not functioning, so I am improvising.

The walls of the chamber are smooth black marble; a fist-sized black stone set in a niche in the eastern wall seems to absorb light. A small crystal shard glows with an eerie purple light at the apex of the angled ceiling. Shades of faint movement skitter across the far wall.

While you do not spot any traps or hazards along the way, as soon as you enter the next room, suddenly the door behind you slams shut, and it seems your very shadows, cast upon the far wall, spring to life and attack.

Due to Space here, I'm just going to say that Pets are locked outside for this one.

Trying to understand what was going on, Albert listen and look at the actions his comrades and shadowy counterpart were doing.

After most of his comrades acts he says.

Stop attacking ! Our Shadowy counterpart seems to mimic all our actions ! Lets try not attacking for a while and see what's going on.

He adds The crystal seems attach to something, may be someone with deft hands could pick it up ?

Will delay my action to see if my shadow counterpart do the same.

When you stop attacking, they do likewise, otherwise mirroring your exact actions, though they only move to an area that is the same distance, but in the opposite direction as you. A moment later, a new, fully healed and unharmed version of Turak appears, once again doing all that he does.

It takes you a little bit of effort, but you are able to remove the crystal from the stone, revealing it is actually a wand, with the crystal itself as the wands tip.

While complete, it functions as a Wand of Shadow Conjuration, though the tip, that darkly lit crystal seems to be a replica of the light crystal you had also found. When the two are brought close together, they seem to cancel each other out, or sort of. Both seem to radiate light, but together, their light seems more natural. Not the black light of the one or the sterile white light of the other, but rather a simple, natural seeming light.

With both keys now in hand, you return tot he last room, and place both of the crystals into the small slots they fit into. As you do so, suddenly both Valais and Aikio fall to the ground in absolute pain, but on the door itself a small compartment opens. It extends about 2ft into a solid surface, and at the end you can see a lever. It seems very suspicious.

After a few moments, the pain for both Aikio and Valais goes away, but neither feel well afterwards.

Perception DC 25 (trap):
The compartment is pretty obviously trapped, and it seems to be a mechanical one. You think that reaching your hand in to pull the lever springs the trap, which seems to be one that will slice off the appendage stuck into the compartment. Perhaps it's intent was to test a persons conviction or willingness to endure pain in order to proceed? Please give me a Disable Device check.

Diri scrawls several notes about how a "shadowy duplicate of oneself could multiply productivity by a factor greater than one with a maximum as optimal as double but more research is required." Looking at Ariana, she notes parenthetically, "(Punching oneself seems to injure the duplicate- -noted for completeness)."

All:
So, part of the deal with that last encounter was that if you disbelieved the Illusion, it only dealt 20% damage. If you failed to disbelieve the illusion, it deals full damage, which is what I showed in the Initiative Roster. Look back at the last few posts, and inside the spoilers, I included the real damage people took. I wanted to keep the Illusion Damage, because not everyone disbelieved, but, if there is a Spoiler with your name and it says a different number, that is the true damage you took, but others may see differently.

1d100 ⇒ 64 Despite walking a new path now, and turned her back on the flame and the art, it seems to still answer Aikio's call, at least for the moment. . .

While that too, still fails, continued working at it with the aid of minor telekinetic magics finally gets the final door to open, revealing the Inner Sanctum of the Shattered God.

Scorched earth and burned grass cover this round chamber’s floor. In the center of the room stands a tall tree, its blackened bark seeping blood-red sap and its branches twisted and thorny. Glowing silvery runes circle the base of the tree. At the base of the tree lays a lithe, bronze-skinned man missing his left arm, a puddle of blood pooled beneath him. His right hand lies just inside the circle, and a single word is scratched in the dirt near his fingertips, "gretaak". What it means, however, you have no idea. It doesn't seem to be any word in any language you know.

Perception or Sense Motive DC 20:
You know that the wounded creature that has nearly bled to death did not himself write those letters into the dirt. But who did?

Know Arcana or Religion, or Spellcraft DC 20:
The silvery runes circling the base of the large tree are certainly magical in nature, creating some sort of ward. You also know that typically, but not always, silver is used in Holy magic, or those to ward against Evil, Undeath, and similar things.

Turak:
I can't remember, did you have Scent also?? If so, you can also read the spoiler meant for Razor and Wilson below.

Winston and Razor:
Both pets smell another presence in the room, but can not see it. It's also very difficult to even pinpoint it, as the entire room seems to have the same smell, as if whoever it is has been here a long time, or perhaps there are more than one all with the same scent, and they are all over the room.

Heal DC 15:
The creature sitting in a pool of it's own blood is stable, but literally on death's door. Even the most minor injury will likely kill him. Closer examination indicates that while one arm has been completely severed, the fingers on it covered in small bits of dirt, the hand on the other arm that is still intact seems to have been mutilated nearly beyond repair, likely requiring something along the lines of a Regenerate to heal. You can also tell that the body of the angelic being has been tortured repeatedly, and it seems intentionally left on the brink of death.

Aikio:
As you enter, you hear a warming voice within your head, "I am proud of you my child. Come, bow before the sacred heartwood tree. Touch the bark and utter the sacred incantation written in the dirt. Then retrieve my staff, leave the circle, and present it before me. Only then can I take corporeal form.”

A few more things I need to add in still.

As soon as he spots the injured creature, Rilas immediately goes to its side to see if he can aid it. He quickly notices that the writing in the dirt is not from this creature. "This creature has been tortured and left hear to die. Whatever evil has done this must not be allowed to survive."

Another Perception check DC 20:
You also hear a whispering voice, seemingly directed at Valais Durant, "I sense something familiar. You! You are one of the abominations. Has the one-eyed surgeon tracked me here? Are you his slaves? I will destroy him and all of his pawns, for I have advanced beyond the simple machinations of his lab! I am as far beyond demons as they are beyond you." This, in addition to what she seems to have heard from Aikio as well, clearly sends a shiver down her spine, and her face, all of them, grow noticeably pale.

Know Planes DC 16:
The mutilated being you see lying on the ground is an Azata, a paragon creature of righteousness and freedom.

Albert:
You, AND ONLY YOU, spot this other being hovering some soft up at the ceiling and watching you as you approach. There is only one, that you can see, but clearly no one else can see him, and part of you is very thankful for that. He seems to simply wait and watch, taking no action, not even to put up any defenses. The Shattered God looks much like Valais, a hodgepodge of different body parts from very different creatures, but, . . . you notice one other detail,. . . it seems that some of the larger, bulkier parts integrated into Valais . . . came from him. That might help to explain her connection to this place, but raises a question, can you trust her? ? ?
