Could not Sis Az have gotten her shot off before Shy charged in and Nat flanked and swung with her morningstar? I guess we'll hear what GM Angelina thinks soon enough. Sorry, Az.

yeah that's what I am hoping for, really depends on the initiative order. if you move in first then I hold my shot, if not then i shoot then you move in. I have limited supply of silver bullets so I don't want to waste them. I enough balm for 300 shots though. but only 9 silver bullets left (8 after this shot)

CS Game Post 6 - Resolving Imp Combat Round 3
After traveling for a few days, you broke off the main road and headed down a smaller dirt road toward Endurant.
While still some ways away from the village, your group suddenly fell under attack.
Four nasty little flying creatures appeared, shrieking, right next to your traveling party, as if out of nowhere, surrounding your group.
Only about two feet tall each, they had wings, tails, reddish skin, and grotesque features.
They seemed to radiate a sense of wrongness as one successfully attacked Eli, one unsuccessfully attacked Aeryth, one successfully attacked Chap, and one successfully attacked Kiwyn, with stingers on the ends of their tails.
Imp E was shaken by Natanja's cause fear, shot by Sister Azmaria's silver bullet, stunned and blinded by Cernan's color spray, and whacked by Eli's stick.
Imp A was slashed to unconsciousness by Aeryth and Marius's swords, then picked to death by Lesith's celestial eagles.
Invisible Imp C was snapped at and barked at by Kiwyn's celestial dog, but seems to have escaped upwards, at least for now.
Imp K was stabbed by Chap's longspear and raked by Shyness's claw before it disappeared and tried to escape, but it was again raked by Shyness's claw as it did so, and, although it is invisible, it may have thudded to the ground nearby.
Aeryth and Poterol provided spell support.
Vincent and Kaya attempted to provide melee support.
Mules continued to panic.
Round 3 PC Actions in Initiative Order:
Natanja, Arabeth, and Kiwyn are temporarily distracted by the panicking mules and thus delay their actions slightly.
You're welcome. ;)
Chap takes a step forward and, feeling around carefully, uses her longspear to pinpoint just where invisible Imp K fell, preparing to make a coup-de-gras attack next round.
Aeryth, rides his war-trained horse over next to where Kiwyn's celestial dog hops around, looking up and barking, near where Imp C dropped. Aeryth swings his sword wildly and impressively through the air, but doesn't connect with anything.
Azmaria reloads her pistol and fires at Imp E, the silver bullet again easily burning straight through the fiend's skin.
Marius commands Rex the Wolf to make sure Imp A stays dead, which Rex does by gnawing on it, this time succeeding in tasting imp blood. Marius himself begins the difficult task of trying to calm and collect the panicked mules.
Cernan turns and starts to color spray Imp K, but hesitates when he notices it has disappeared and he might hit allies. The spell fizzles.
Kaya floats down where invisible Imp K fell and successfully gives it a solid kick with her foot. From what she can tell, it seems to be prone on the ground, but she doesn't think she damaged it more.
Vincent kicks a bunch of dirt over the fallen body of Imp K to make it somewhat visible and calls for Shyness to kill it.
Poterol whacks Imp E with his morningstar, but doesn't think he hit it hard enough to damage the tough little imp.
Lesith calls upon heavenly healing fire to cure Eli's hp damage, while her remaining celestial eagle flaps over to peck at the invisible but semi-dirt-covered Imp K. Eli, you are restored to full hp.
Shyness, in her bloodrage, fails to notice Vincent's actions and suggestion, but instead runs over to Imp E and rakes a fierce celestial claw through the imp's tough skin, as if it were nothing. Imp E crashes to the ground.
Natanja moves over quickly to flank the unconscious Imp E with Shyness, thwacking it hard with her morningstar, and drawing more blood.
Eli, still unmasked and smiling radiantly, takes the opportunity to coup-de-grace the helpless Imp E, smashing the end of his walking stick down on the fallen fiend's throat, and ending its miserable life for good.
Kiwyn's celestial dog seems to give up on reaching the invisible Imp C and instead rushes over to join the celestial eagle in gnawing at the invisible-but-dirt-covered Imp K, while Kiwyn herself surveys the battleground for any additional threats.
Arabeth, smiling, unleashes a burst of healing energy that radiates all around everyone, making you feel awesome, and curing Kiwyn and Chap of all wounds. Kiwyn and Chap are now at full hit points.
Enemy Actions:
Eli's Critter Imp E is visible and dead.
Aeryth's Critter Imp A is visible and dead.
Chap's Critter Imp C is nowhere to be seen. It escaped. Even those with scent don't catch wind of it.
Kiwyn's Critter Imp K is invisible but covered with dirt, and nearly dead.
(...yet somewhat healed by Arabeth's channel and it's own fast healing).
Chap, however, finishes the job with a longspear coup-de-grace as her first action on the next round.
Imp K is dead.
Combat rounds are now effectively over.
Eli has taken 4 Dex damage, and Chap has taken 1 Dex damage.
All PC's hp damage has been healed by Lesith and Arabeth.
Most of the mounts who are not currently being either ridden or held onto are still braying and trying to move away from the chaos.
It is late morning. If you succeed in calming and collecting the mounts, and then keep riding, you should reach Endurant within a few hours.
So... no more initiative order...
What do you guys do?
What do you say? (You're no longer limited to six seconds!)
How do you calm the mules?
What (if anything) do you do with the three imp corpses (two visible, and one invisible)?
Does anything change about your plan to approach Endurant?
Do you make any skill checks along the way?
If everyone has posted some reaction by Friday evening, then I will make the next gameplay post Friday or Saturday.
Good job on your first combat, guys!
Game on! :)
Elysium "Eli" Blackdun |
Huzzah!
Still smiling, Eli nods, picks up his mask, and returns it to his face, seeming suddenly very, very tired, but impassive and emotionless. He stumbles a bit, before catching himself on Shyness' and Natanja's arms, then nods.
"Thank you, cousins. All of you. We are victorious in the face of our first contact with the enemy... however, now the enemy knows us."
Looking at them, he notes with no emotion, "These spirits will make fine crafting material for armor." he nods again, looking around. "They were also not working alone. One has left - I heard it declare such. It has also gone to warn one they only referred to as 'him' - a man who apparently entreated with these spirits of foul tempers and filthy mouths. They were here to stop us, because we were, to paraphrase, nasty 'nasty good scum', and, more importantly, 'no one gets through' because 'no one is supposed to know yet'." His words and voice betray no hint of how Eli feels about what he's just shared.
"It should be noted that I have removed a few non-important specifics - our languages lack the precise control necessary to describe those anatomical features, actions, and interactions between various entities." Eli relays, calmly.
Then, looking around, "Is everyone alright. If any can help those in need, please do so. Also, please help regain control of the mounts." Eli begins to work toward exactly that, himself. "We must get to Endurant tonight. Thank you."
Eli works to stand alone, assuring the others. "Thank you, cousins. I believe that I need no further help. Please assist those in need."
Bluff: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18
EDIT: I forgot!
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Marius Rizallo |
Rex continues to growl at the dead imp, his muzzle bloodied with fiendish blood. While holding onto his mule with one hand, Marius offers another to his friend. "Relax, Rex. You got 'im."
Calming somewhat, Rex returns to Marius's side while he tries to calm the mules.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Arabeth |
Arabeth blinks and shakes her head... she looks some what confused by something. Initially she does her best to calm her horse and the animals around her.
Ride Check:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
"Um... " She begins hesitantly, "If those were the van of something, we had best be very much on our guard. Does any one know where the missing one might be." She glances around, still worried about an invisible, sneaky little attacker hiding some where....
"Well... real fiends! I'd heard about them in temple-home but actually to see such creatures!" Arabeth mutters to herself.
Natanja Ogenj |
It was over -- well the current encounter with the imps seemed to be.
Natanja called Oko down and the softly glowing hawk descended and landed on her shoulder in little time. She secured her weapon to the belt at her waist.
When Eli took one of her arms to steady himself, Natanja took time to make sure he was hale as Marius and the others were dealing with the frenzied mules.
"Let me check you over, cousin. Wounds are not only on the outside. Trust me, I am a reliable healer."
Upon Eli's permission, Natanja draws him to the side and discreetly begins the task in earnest.
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
After she has examined Eli, in lowered voice, she relays her initial findings/observations,
"It seems you have temporarily lost some mobility. Your joints appear to have stiffened. This will impair your coordination and swiftness of foot, cousin. I see signs of fatigue, also. The pallor of your skin is not what it should be. You will need time to rest or require magical healing deeper than what I can provide."
Natanja Ogenj |
Once she has completed her examination of her stoic cousin, Eli, and finished talking with him, Natanja will then offer aid to any of her cousins attempting to calm and rein in the mules.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Between quiet words and soothing sounds to pacify the mules, Natanja speaks quietly to Oko,
To her companions she asked openly, "What shall we do with the bodies?", pointing to the dead imps.
Kiwyn the White |
Kiwyn thanks her canine friend before it returns home in a soft flash of light and motes. She turns her attention helping round up the animals.
Handle Animals 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Her attempts aren't nearly as comical as she feared they would be.
Heal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Sense Motive 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
She notices Eli was injured more then it seemed but can't tell how at the moment. She's glad to see Natanja tending to him and continues to help with the animals.
Marius Rizallo |
"Burial is probably too good for them," Marius comments as he reins in another of the mules. "but we can't simply leave them here. I wouldn't want any wildlife to eat of tainted meat." He quickly checks Rex, making sure the wolf isn't doing exactly that.
He isn't, though he's since wiped his muzzle off on a patch of grass. A few blades of reddened grass stick to his face, but the wolf seems oblivious. Marius can't help but chuckle.
"I guess burning them is out of the question?" he asks, directed more at Cernan than anyone else. He seemed to be the most knowledgeable among them when it came to these buggers.
Elysium "Eli" Blackdun |
To the help offered, Eli says nothing, but nods, once. Then at last, "Expessed gratitude is yours, cousin." without the slightest inflection in his voice.
With the imps, Eli speaks up again, saying, "As I said," Eli notes dispassionately, "these spirits will make fine crafting material for armor." he nods at them. "It will help ward from similar."
Cernan the Patient |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
"'The enemy,' Eli? You say that as if you were expecting them."
Cernan begins looking over the corpses, sketching what he can. He idly calls out, "One of them got away, and it sounds like there may be others. They were looking for us specifically. This isn't good. If anyone has some silver coins to melt down, I'll see what I can do to make us some better weapons for this sort of job."
Making proper weapons takes time, but Cernan can craft a few doses alchemical silver oil or weapon blanch in the downtime alongside a day or two of hiking.
Natanja Ogenj |
"If anyone has some silver coins to melt down, I'll see what I can do to make us some better weapons for this sort of job."
"I only have 5 silver pieces on me, Cernan. But they're yours to add to any others you collect."
"...these spirits will make fine crafting material for armor." he nods at them. "It will help ward from similar."
"Ah, that is rather creative thinking there, cousin. Do you mean to skin them?" Natanja was not the squeamish sort, but she had never witnessed such an act before (skinning an imp, that is). In Eli's current condition Natanja wondered how he would go ... but she held her counsel.
Elysium "Eli" Blackdun |
He looks at Cernan, "It matters not if we expected them: they expected us and attacked us for a purpose of their own to stop us from 'getting through' or 'knowing' - they have declared themselves enemy before any had reason to know them as aight else." without emotion.
Looking to Natanja, Eli simply responds, "Yes."
Removing his shirt, he weakly begins attempting to gather them and bundle them together (and eventually on a donkey), to handle at a clean place.
Marius Rizallo |
Marius stops with the mules, turns, and raises an eyebrow at Eli's dedication to skinning the little fiends.
"I've skinned a lot of animals in my travels... but damn. Just - wow."
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Wow. So much for helping out Eli. Sorry ;.;
Turning away, he tries not to shudder as he thinks of the process. He didn't know exactly what good imp skin was for, but Marius wasn't sure it was worth that effort.
Lesith Gala |
At Eli remarks, she makes a disgust face.
"I am not sure we should use, that, as clothing. And yes, the enemy know we are coming. Let's us hurry up, and don't make it wait."
Heal Roll DC 15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Sense Motive DC 18: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Perception Roll DC 20: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
To Natanja she answers:
"Burn them! Or bathe them in Holy water. They need to be destroyed."
She goes to Eli, and helps him anyway, making sure he is ok.
"We need to hurry..."
Shyness |
The adrenaline surge leaves Shyness' body and her posture indicates that it took something out of her. She still manages to help Natanja catch Eli, and then help to right him. He makes his assurances, and she takes him at his word.
Several cousins work on calming the pack animals, but Shyness stands to the side, trying to stay out of the way. The discussion regarding the imps intrigues her, but she has little to add until Eli says that they were specifically sent after the group.
"Why were so few sent against us? Does this enemy underestimate us, or does he insult our honor?" It is clear by her tone that the insult is the more grievous offense.
At Eli's remarks, she makes a disgusted face.
"I am not sure we should use that, as clothing. And yes, the enemy know we are coming. Let's us hurry up, and don't make it wait."
"Little Sister, when prey acts as predator, caution must be used, or traps will close on the unwary."
----------
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Lesith Gala |
Lesith looks at Shyness with fire in her eyes.
"I doubt they were waiting for us, and the fiend that escaped is going to warn them. Every minute we linger here fearing their traps they got more time to prepare. I had you as brave, not as timid, little cousin. Let's hurry up, and trust in God's protection."
Lesith climbs into his horse, and without waiting for reply or the others, goes towards Endurant.
Shyness |
Lesith looks at Shyness with fire in her eyes.
"I doubt they were waiting for us, and the fiend that escaped is going to warn them. Every minute we linger here fearing their traps they got more time to prepare. I had you as brave, not as timid, little cousin. Let's hurry up, and trust in God's protection."
Lesith climbs into his horse, and without waiting for reply or the others, goes towards Endurant.
Shyness does not visibly react to the insult. One does not anger at the words of a child; one teaches the child to speak with wisdom. Oh, Thark.... She watches sadly as Lesith mounts her horse and rides off. "Bravery and foolishness are often mistaken for one another. How will she track this fiend that was expecting us?," she wonders aloud.
Vincent Del Sol |
Vincent, stabs at the invisible enemy, to ensure it is beyond dead. He catches his breath, even though it only lasted mere seconds...it was his first ever fight for his life. He then cleans his blade, and tucks it back in his belt. He searches the visible bodies for any clues, notes, valuables, etcetera. take 20=26
After searching the vile creatures he turns and looks towards the sky, I first real battle. I fought as a kid, but nothing like this...
If this "him", knows we are coming, then we need to travel quick. I personally dont enjoy not having the element of surprise, but I will have to make do I suppose
Lesith Gala |
Lesith lets a tear fall after riding away from the others, with a heartache not even "victory" can wash away. But then a plan starts forming in her mind... And she spurs her horse to go full gallop in the direction of the town destination.
"I bet the fiend is going that way, to report our coming, but I doubt that small thing can outrun a horse in a long race. Good thing I bought it, I am now the scout of the group! If I am lucky it will see only one unarmed woman giving chase and will try to attack me. If not he won't be able to leave me behind, and I'll be able too see what are we against, and what kind of reception they plan for us."
With a new resolve in her face she goes full speed ahead.
"Go as fast as you can, my steed! It is time to show good is faster than evil!"
GM Angelina |
Hmmm... Although I can understand Lesith's desire to be something of a scout ... can I ask for her to perhaps reconsider, or maybe for others in the group to stop her?
I just want to keep this both manageable for me and fun for all fourteen players, and if Lesith reaches Endurant alone, way before any of the other characters, it will turn into a one-player-game for a while, while the other PCs can't do anything, and shouldn't know anything... not really a recipe for fun, I think.
So, I know it's meta-gamey, but I'm requesting that we not split up the party too much.
If everyone wants to hurry along together, fine, but please try to more-or-less stick together.
Perhaps Lesith remembers Angelina in her dream, saying that she hopes the group will work together to face this challenge.
Or, perhaps she considers what will likely happen to her if she runs into another flock of imps when she's on her own, without any allies.
Elysium "Eli" Blackdun |
As Lesith begins to push her mount, Eli walks as quickly as he can over to Shyness.
"I have seen you move. As fast as I or these steeds, and more agile as you are not a rider."
He removes his mask, and smiles sadly and benevolently.
"A gift, my cousin. Use it well to stop her quickly. We do not wish to be separate."
He leans forward and kisses her on the forehead. Suddenly, she is no longer fatigued. He re-dons his mask, face and emotions vanishing behind a mask of calm once again.
"Now, go, as swiftly as possible, catch her, and stop her. Say that I wish for her to be well, and us all to be together."
Shyness may now run (four times your speed) for a number of rounds equal to your constitution score and may hustle for up to an hour thereafter. Lesith may have her mount hustle for up to 1 hour. Shyness can catch up quickly. EDITED
Cernan the Patient |
"Thanks, Eli. I've seen how those things fight, and by now it's probably completely healed—I don't think she could take one by herself."
Brit "Chap" Norgant |
I'll hold onto the bodies until the time their bodies are of more use than wearing for protection. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of turning the evil against itself in such an ironic way, but these are necessary as evidence. Fiends such as these don't come to our world on their own, someone is responsible for bringing them here. I will examine them for marks so later we can find the guilty party.
Lesith Gala |
Hmmm... Although I can understand Lesith's desire to be something of a scout ... can I ask for her to perhaps reconsider, or maybe for others in the group to stop her?
Well, meta-gaminging a little it works if the others catch up with Lesith after she has had a while to observe the enemies, scouting, as I said, without making more posts about what Lesith does. And that is if she doesn't manage to attract the escaping Imp attention, which works ok too. About the others stopping her, I think only one of all would manage to do it ;)
GM Angelina |
If Lesith is determined to continue ahead,
Shyness could catch up to her quickly if she starts running now, now that she is no longer fatigued.
Aeryth may be able to catch up to Lesith if he goes now and makes a ride DC of 15, if Lesith doesn't.
I, personally, would appreciate this.
Lesith, would your character actually fight Shyness or Aeryth if they caught up and tried to grab your horse's reigns to stop it?
Or would she grudgingly return?
Aeryth or Shyness, you may want to post that you are chasing down Lesith, if you are, and what you would say to her when you catch up, so she can react in character.
EDIT:
Ninja'd by Shyness.
Thanks! :)
What would Shyness say to Lesith when she catches up, and what would she do?
Sister Azmaria |
Azmaria looks over the dead Imps. strange, they are still here. They should have vanished back to the abyss they came from. this is unusual.
She continues to examine and looks like she is lost in thought.
lesser demons that are summoned forth vanish back to their home when slain in this world. There is powerful demon magic at work here.
even if what she says is not entirely true, this is the truth she believes and has experienced
Lesith Gala |
In fact she would react very differently depending which one of them catch up with her, and also depending in what they say.
If I may ask: How is Shyness able to catch up with her (besides DM-fiat)?
Also: Send you a Private Message, DM, in case you didn't saw it.
GM Angelina |
I got your PM, Lesith, and responded.
Eli linked to the rules in the bottom blue line of one of his posts above in this gameplay thread, and he just recently put a post showing his math in the discussion thread.
(I sometimes rely on Eli for rules math. He's helpful that way!)
Basically, Shyness can run to catch up with Lesith. A horse with rider can only hustle.
Shyness will tire of running much more quickly than a horse will tire of hustling, but Lesith only left a few rounds before Shyness, so she would catch up well before tiring.
Natanja Ogenj |
"Lesith said to burn the bodies or douse them in holy water. I believe they have an immunity to fire, so that isn't an option. Perhaps after Eli's skinned them ..." Natanja let the sentence trail off. "I have a flask of holy water, but I don't believe that is enough for all three imps."
Hearing Chap speak up about holding onto the fiends' bodies as evidence, Natanja inclined her head. "How do you want them bundled up? Do we have sacks?"
I thought I could be reckless and headstrong ..., Natanja mused silently, as she watched Lesith ride off alone without warning toward Endurant.
That Shyness and Aeryth had to go after Lesith to try to stop her seemed such a waste of time and resources.
Sister Azmaria |
Arabeth helps settle her mount while helping heard the mules.
Ride Check:1d20+3
For now she listens and learns rather than talks and opines.
That's odd. Previous post got eated...
Cernan the Patient |
"Might be easier to just bury the nasty things," Cernan says, after some time, "Rather than spend another hour arguing about what to do, when I'm not sure they're really worth our time."
GM Angelina |
Vincent doesn't notice any pouches, valuables, or notes on the imp corpses.
Lesith rides ahead, with Shyness running and Aeryth riding after her to encourage her to wait for the group.
Marius, Natanja, Kiwyn, Eli, and Arabeth succeed in calming and rounding up the mules.
Chap takes the dead imps from Eli into her large backpack and mounts up on her mule to get going.
The group rides off along the road toward Endurant.
Please post any skill checks or conversation along the way.
Elysium "Eli" Blackdun |
Eli calmly keeps his shirt but, doused in imp blood, does nothing other than roll it up and ride on without it.
To Chap, he'd add, "Thank you. Storage is appreciated." in his standard masked monotone.
If/when they catch up...
To Lesith he says, "Thank you. I am glad you are well." in his normal emotionless tone.
To Shyness and Aeryth, he would add, "Thank you. I am weaker than I would like to admit." without any sort of inflection or hint of emotion beyond the words themselves.
He would look around, and, calmly, state, "Lesith is correct, we should move quickly. But Shyness is correct, we should move together. I recommend we have at least two other 'contacts' and we go no where without at least one of them. If the enemy can surprise us once, until we have the ability to pierce the veil of the spirit world with our gaze, we will be able to be surprised again. In this way, we can move well and strongly, and hopefully survive." No hint of anything, waiver or rise or fall of curiosity, fear, joy, or any other emotion modulates the sound of his voice.
EDITed, as I posted before intending to. I recommend that, at least for now, we (by way of discussion) choose two other people to be "buddies" of which we go with at least on at all times. Yes, I'm advocating the buddy system. More in discussion...
Shyness |
Shyness runs after Lesith, catching up with her after a few moments. She marvels at Eli's gift, the lack of exhaustion after using her power is exhilarating. Shyness lopes alongside the haloed woman, touching her leg briefly to get Lesith's attention.
"Little Sister, a moment, if you will. I am not accustomed to large groups, and am no strategist. You may be right that it is better to make haste. I will say that Brother Eli wishes for you to be well, and for us all to be together. If you choose not to turn back, may I accompany you?"
Shyness continues beside Lesith patiently.
Marius Rizallo |
As Shyness dashes off to chase down Lesith, Marius simply shakes his head. Looking down at Rex, he smiles. "Women," he quietly remarks. "You'd better follow her, bud. Keep them safe."
Handle Animal-Push to Defend: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Rex dashes off, hot on Shyness's heels.
Marius helps the others get back to their mules, and once more they start down the trail to Endurant. He tried not to think of all the grossness now stuffed into Chap's pack. Or Eli's shirt.
Somehow, Marius suspected they're regret dragging a few fiendish corpses along with them - but was also glad not to leave them as carrion. Perhaps it was tainted meat that had corrupted Rex's first pack, the blood of devils running through their veins. Though honestly, Marius didn't really want to find out.
