Killed Summoned Monsters 24 Hour Reform Question

Rules Questions

Ok, I'm aware a creature called with a "Summoning" such as SM and SNA spells cannot be summoned again for 24 hours if "killed."

What happens if you do SM2 and summon from the SM1 list? You roll 1d3 and there's 3 of the same creature. If two die, then what?

I'm assuming if 2 of them die, you can never summon more than 1 on a 1d3 until 24 hours have passed. Ok, that part is easy to rule.

The hard part is what if you cast Summon Monster II three times to summon 1d3 Fiendish Dire Rats each, making it 3d3 Dire Rats? Now what?

Is there a rule you cannot cast a summoning more than once to summon the same type, that it has to be a different type every time? Or is it the first 3 dire rats killed locks you from summoning one again for 24 hours (and maybe makes the remaining ones disappear?)

Shadow Lodge

I believe the '24 hour reform' rule is largely irrelevant as it only comes into play if you try to summon the exact same individual creature again: Just because your rat died doesn't mean there ain't plenty more out there to summon, nor does anything in the spell text indicate that it even attempts to summon the same creature each time.

In general, every time you summon a creature, it is assumed to be a different individual than any you have summoned before.

This issue does matter if you are using the summon guardian spirit feat. But I can’t think of another instance where this would ever matter for your game.

The Exchange

What the others said. Unless are trying to get the same individual it doesn’t matter.

Years ago someone posted a clever idea for a group of players who wanted a “more like a computer game” game: A war between angels and demons. The twist was that the angels kept summoning the PCs into the middle of their fights. So even if they died it only meant they were out for the rest of that game session. Don’t know if the GM ever implemented it.

But what if I AM trying to summon Gary the Celestial Dolphin again? It's just not the same if it's anyone else! :)

Summon Monster spells are summoning spells not calling. They also don’t mention the ability to summon specific creatures. Looking over the spells from the summoning school I don’t see any that say they can be used to summon specific creatures, nor do any of the spells summon unique creatures. From the looks of it the rule about not summoning a creature for 24 hours is more in the nature of fluff than anything that will have a real impact on the game.

There is nothing in the rules that prevent you from summoning as many of a specific type of creature you want.

The summon guardian spirit feat does summon the same creature every time. Which can be useful for letting it scout a location and then report to you what it found with a second summoning. And if that creature dies, you have to wait 24 hours to summon it back.

But I'm not aware of any other time where that limitation is anything more than flavor/fluff.

summoning a 'named' creature is in the realm of home games.
RAW is just generic on this option with Summon Monster as it says it can be done but lacks details. In generic play having to summon a named creature is a disadvantage and the spell does not read that way as the caster can name the creature type as part of the casting. The only time it is set is with scrolls (as everything has to be defined by the scriber of the scroll but we assume casters with the spell on their list know how to change it but UMDers do not).
It can be fun roleplay wise and consult your GM. I'd find a critter at Mon Sum 3-4 that you want to call again & again. You'll have to speak its language & make a Diplomacy check at a minimum.
