Blade Launcher, what's the point?

I've been scratching my head over this and I can't come up with a situation where this is actually worth using long term other than with Automatic Bonus Progression as you'll have to buy multiple magic weapons to use as ammo to keep up with your attacks as you level as Returning doesn't work... Has anyone come up with something they are actually good for?

Secondly, I'm curious on the very limited list of items it'll throw: for some reason it'll toss a dagger but not a more balances throwing knife? With STARKNIFE on the list, it's hard not to imaging dozens of other things that'd fit as well as that even if we restrict the list to 1d4 weapons for game balance reasons.

You might want your miniaturised World of Warcraft Night Elf to have their very own Blade Launcher ballista?

But, on a more serious note, the only advantage it would have over an actual weapon is that it isn't a weapon. It uses the proficiency of the weapon loaded into it, and that includes any special modifiers for that weapon type that aren't specifically excluded.

Not spectacularly useful, given everyone has the capacity to use a crossbow, but I suppose it fits a thematic niche.

Yeah, compared to a crossbow, it isn't great.

Maybe there are some melee-weapon-only runes that would be nice to have at longer range than the 10 feet increment a dagger normally has?

Starknife is melee and thrown 20', so it's only really x2 range.

PS: and the starknife looks like the way to go if you did find a use for it as it keeps Deadly d6. Well that or shurikens if you're low on bulk since they are - bulk.

It's really a shame you can't enchant the launcher in some way so you don't have to figure out how to enchant numerous weapons.

Yeah, that is probably the houserule that I would go with if I had a player that wanted one for flavor reasons. At that point it is only a slightly nerf'ed crossbow that has the benefit of having reusable ammunition.

It is only a level 1 item...goblins launching rusty daggers at your party seems fun.

Sure but you have things like the Thunder Sling that lets you throw another weapon [a dart] farther [+30'], ups the damage die 1, it's a level 0 item, AND it can be enchanted. This leaves me again scratching my head on... Why ever use the blade launcher? What niche is it meant to fill?

While "goblins launching rusty daggers at your party seems fun" at 1st, it quickly loses it's luster at higher levels where every piece of ammo needs runes and returning doesn't work.

Spoon. Gun.

I REALLY WISH THE SPOON GUN WOULD WORK WITH IMPROVSED WEAPON FEATS! That would be hilarious.

I might be mixing up systems but wasn't there some accessory or something about a line you could attach and retrieve as an interact action? Or am I confusing some specific thrown weapon?

I'd love a blade launcher if you could attach the line to pull back AND reload it with one interact. Though if I had access to the stride/reload or reload/strike that'd also work

....except this doesn't have "reload" does it. So any effect wsorking on reload interactions might not work on it?

I want to like it a lot though. Purely on the basis that I want to shoot Wounding Daggers. I do wish it had a connecting line and was a Wrist Launcher

Could be a fun gm tool to literally throw treasure at the party like runes and special material daggers from scrupulous monsters.
