We're pretty close to finished tying up the Merle/Swift arc ..just want to make sure Eir gets her shake in for the time off... Kruely, if there's anything you want Eir to accomplish in the month we're handwaiving just holler. Oh and you also get an extra 3,300 GP, cuz I'm a nice DM. So spend it as you wish.
Everyone else, it's getting close to introduction time, I think we all did a nice job of getting together and expanding our characters a bit. Kudos on all the good writng folks, really made the last few days fun.

Should I continue with Isaac one way or another or do you want to get down to business pretty soon?
Yeah I was a bit the same with Bethany. I liked all of the small talk with Hanali but wasn't sure how far to take it. I sorta wrapped it up and left it open for Pat to lead (which he did nicely, as always).
P.S.

We can keep on going with Issac's fun night. It looks like Swift has a bit more to do with her wizard contact, then we should settle down. Plus Justin is off on an adventure. Bethany, I wrote up a little bit about a tavern you can frequent. If you want to explore a bit, feel free. I can always wrap it all up with DM fiat if I have to ..

Spoiler:You might see them! I already use the Hadozee from Stormwrack as a race on the Eastern Isles, so the Derhii/Jilarhii would fit right in
Pat: (and anyone else who wants to listen to me blather on about Bethany's Homeworld)
The Derhii have been one of my favourite new Pathfinder monsters/races. When I was thinking of 4 flying races to control the Nations of Conchord there was no question that they (and the Avariel) would be one. I took some big liberties with the established races in giving them 5 Level Base Race/Classes instead of ECLS, but I think that in the end they work.
Initially the fourth race was going to be the Aarakocra, but then I though about them not having actual arms and thinking that would be a detriment for a ruling race. Plus I already had the Forests/Mountains/Hills covered and wanted to have a Desert/Volcanic Continent and so Calibrex and the Ssintex were born.
After designing the different Harpy Sub-Races I wanted there to be additional variations within each of the other Nations.
Therefore for Elyria I made the Dusk Avariel (obviously meant to be Drow Avariel), the only Nation where it's Sub-Race doesn't work with the main Race and they are seperate and aren't on very friendly terms.
For Silvermist I wanted to stick with the monkey theme and so created the Jilarhii. I initially thought that their Skill Monkey Racial Ability was way overpowered, but balanced that with the low HD (1d4, which has been done away with in PFRPG and thae fact that this and their low BAB would make them almost useless in a battle (although while not in battle I still think they are way overpowered). I also thought of you while making them, you Skill Monkey, you! ;) I am also debating whether or not to do a Wise Shaman/Medicine Man/Respected Elder Orang-Utan type Sub-Race as well... thoughts?
Harpies have been depicted as both Avian and Reptilian in different sources and so I split them, creting the Songbird on a whim 'cause I thought they would be cool.
Calibrex is the only Nation I haven't done a secondary Race for. I am still tossing up whether to or have them be the odd ones out.
Then there's Gyr and the Polar Caps.
Gyr is Dwarves (surface) and Svirfneblin (underground), the only landbound Races to have any kind of real importance in the Setting. They are tinker/mechanics who have created Airships and sell them to the flying Races as Troop Carrieres for the Wars which have been fought over the centuries. They are allies with the Gargoyles who are native to Gyr and live in the mountains.
The Polar Caps have the only Humans in the Setting. They tend to be nomadic tribesmen, although there are a few major stationary settlements in the Northern Cap.
There are also some underwater Races as well, but they have a very minor role in the Setting as air travel means that contact with the Ocean Straights is usually confined to fishing along the coastlines.
**breath** **gasp**
Well that started as a short post and turned into abit of a monster, sorry.
Overall, what are your initial impressions of the Conchord Setting? Be brutally honest, nothing good even comes from a sugar coating (as my waisline will no doubt contest to...).
Cheers
EDIT: Oh and thanks for that info on the location of the Hadozee. I did notice that sailor in Opal.
They were originally from Spelljammer in 2e and were Space Sailor Monkey Men. ;)

Spoiler:I'm never the one to ask crunch wise-but your numbers look tight to me. As for fluff: Fantastic! Really takes a fresh angle on fantasy. And to have the humans as a minor polar-race! Great thoughts. I would also have the humans battling Neanderthals for dominace, just to give it an orc/goblin kinda feel, really marginalize humans. I love the concepts you have come up with, and I really think you should seriously consider running a PbP using this setting. I'll join in fer shure! I wanna be a Derhii or Jilarhii of course ... :)
Pat: (and other interested parties)
At this stage I have sorta left out Goblinoids and Orcs. I'm not sure whether to include them or not if I did then it would most likely be Hobgoblins at least ('cause I love 'em).
I will most probably add Kobolds onto the "Other Races" list and have them keyed into colours/tribes/regions similar to PF.
I am still gonna be adding to the "Other Races" list for a little while at least and as I said, I am tossing up at least one more "Core" Race (the Utarhii).
As I was thinking up the Setting, I did consider using it to run a PbP. Only problem is I would have to pretty much cancel most if not all of my other PbPs I am playing in (maybe keep 2 or 3), as they take up an insane amount of my free time. Plus I am a second-rate DM (at least in my opinion), haven't DM'd since DL1 Dragons of Despair back in High School (probably close to 17 years ago) and much prefer playing.
You would definately be first on my list of potential players though if I did do it! :)

Why? Because I am insane. And I downright admitted in the pitch that I would totally ignore the rules if they got in the way of the story. :) These things apparently do not deter people from wanting to play the game. So, you know, whenever you fail that wisdom check and decide to run a game, just know that you'll have players waiting.:)
hmmm... OK I will give it some thought once I have finished writing the actual descriptions for the Setting.

OK, I thought I would post a bit of a primer for those new to the Cage.
The Cage is a giant ring, so at night when you look up you see an arch lit by distant fires, like a ribbon of stars. Kind of like Larry Niven's Ringworld series. The edges are lined with buildings, and if you climb to their roof and jump off ...well you never show up again so no one really knows what happens. The old Dragon comic Downer has a funincular running along the edge of Sigil, which I thought was a fun concept, but I haven't figured out how to work it in yet ...
Money: Sigilian money is the provenance of the Lady's Mint, which is near the Hall of Records in the Clerk's Ward. All official transactions in Sigil (buying property, getting documents, etc.) MUST be in offical Sigil coinage. Otherwise, most cutters take whatever's being dealt. It is a major crossroads after all.
Denominations:
Copper (Greens): Called this because most of them acquire a rich verdegrised color from the Sigil air and the acidic sweat of the Lower Planar beings that handle them.
Silver (Stingers): Called this because silver stings certain Lower Planar folk. Not a good idea to palm them off to a fiend at any rate, akin to giving someone a bouquet of poison ivy...
Gold (Ladies): Called this because they have a stylized face of the Lady of Pain upon them. It doesn't look too lifelike, cause her Pointyness might take exception to the coins as 'worship'.
Platinum: (Merts): Knicknamed after Mertion, the Platinum Heaven level of Mt. Celestia.
Mithril: (Hammers): These are actually forged in the Dwarven complex of Undermountain out in the Outlands. They sport the hammer of Moradin on them.
Most of the Outlands burgs keep their coinage the same weight as Sigil's to facilitate trade.
Most high-volume transactions are handled through magically-warded letters of credit, many issued by the temples of major powers. Temples have a lucrative sideline as bullion repositories and safety-deposit vaults for their parishoners. After all, most major temples have a proxy of their god living on the premises....
Time: Sigil has no sun or moon or stars (though it does have the arch effect, which kinda looks like stars at night (when you can see them). Sigils time is measured in four blocks:
Before Peak: 6am-12pm (first dim light begins right at 6am)
After Peak: 12pm-6pm
Before Antipeak: 6pm-12am (light fades to twilight levels by 6pm)
After Antipeak: 12am-6am
The light of Sigil's Day just appears, sourcelessly. It is dim most of the day, with the hours of 10am-2pm the only time that light-sensitive cutters and critters need hide. Noon is called Peak, midnight Antipeak. Antipeak is the darkest point, Peak the brightest. As Sigil is often wrapped in fog and gloom, it is hard to tell the difference sometimes.
Weather: Sigil never experiences actual cold or hot weather. It remains between 40-60 degrees always, a very wet and dank 40-60 degrees. It often rains, and is usually foggy. You can count the clear days in Sigil on one hand in a year. It usually rains at least every other day, and the rain is usually fairly acidic. Fortunately, Sigil has many fountains and wells fed by small portals to the Elemental Plane of Water, because the rainwater is foul to the taste.
Flora and fauna: No trees grow wild in Sigil. There are cultivated trees, most notably in the Nobles' and Forest Districts, but they require massive amounts of care to survive. There are certain vines and weeds that do grow in Sigil, most notably razorvine. Razorvine is the kudzu of Sigil, growing on every exposed surface. It is a native of the Abyss, and is a black-leafed sharp-edged nuisance. Fortunately though, once cut it becomes harmless to the touch, and is actually used as a wood source by many of the poorer denizens. Coal is also shipped in massive quantities, which adds to the acidic smog.
All manner of vermin infest Sigil. Corpsestink Roaches, Spider Octopi, Cranium Rats and Jump Slugs to name a few. There are a lot of pigeons, and several other birds. The Ditch is home to many fiendish aquatic flora, like Baatorian Rock Octopus, Devil Squid or Death Eels.
Sigil has a massive underground complex known officially as UnderSigil, but more commonly as either The Darks, or The Catacombs. No one knows the extent, since Sigil has an unknown thickness, and no one has managed to tunnel down through the Cage's bottom to see what happens. There are many levels of buildings that have been paved over during the many millenia of the Cage's existence, and entire civilizations' remains are hidden below the busy streets. Most accesible entrances are in the Hive, but the Lower Ward neighborhood of Gurincraag has extensive underground complexes for its many dwarven residents. Many older homes and businesses in the Cage have a locked grate in the cellar connecting to the massive sewer complexes.
Above Sigil is the aerial places known as OverSigil. There are a few actual floating buildings, but the owners rarely like company. The flying races keep their own style of residences high above the groundling's heads.
| Ragadolf |
Thx for the update on Sigil, I haven't read anything about it since it was First released many moons ago!
The world you have created sounds really interesting! I luv the Avarial (especially one version I found in a SRD webpage that has no +1 ECL to worry about!)
New worlds are fun to explore, if you ARE crazy enough to run a PbP in there, I'd be happy to try and jump into another one!
(Although I should reeeeely be careful. I'm eating up most of my 'free' time with Pbp's as it is!)
I'm enjoying Justin's little adventure, and I see that you found a way to get a couple of us together, so like a good PC I'm going to jump on in!

Oh there's a twist on races in Conchord. ;)
Once I've finished writing everything up (and editing and tweaking) I think you've convinced me to start a PbP using Conchord. THIS is gold. Pure Gold. :)
Technical question Pat,
In combing spell/magic item effects, are you in the 'Ring of AC+1 and Mage armor CAN or CANNOT stack?' category?
I only ask cuz if my coat (bought as Ring of AC+1) will not stack with my Mage armor, Then I won't buy it. I'll just stick with the spell.

The 'Trick' Ragadolf is finding the type of bonus. Bonuses of the same type generally don't stack. Mage armour, for example, doesn't stack with items that give an armour bonus (like armour or bracers). A ring of protection is a deflection bonus IIRC while mage armour is an armour bonus . . . thus they stack.

Ah, yes. This is true.
But I know DM's who do NOT allow the ring and the Spell to stack, because the spell is the prereq for making the ring. (IIRC!) Thus my question. And I was planning on making the ring of AC+1 into my coat, which would technically be made as 'armor'. SO I guess it would be an armor bonus, and thus would NOT stack. :P I just answered my own question.

Bethany's Slip was made using the Bracers of Armour as a base, so they actually give an Armour bonus and therefore would not stack with say Bracers of Armour or actual Armour. They would however stack with Amulet of Natural Armour or Ring of Protection.
| Vulcan Stormwrath |
There are Cloaks that provide a deflection bonus. Using that as the template for the coat you'd probably be fine. Just that increasng the bonus would cost you based on the ring's price rather than the armor enhancement price.
Also Beta has a rule for having an item like a ring, take up a different slot, like the neck for instance. The cost is 1.5 times normal. But if I remember correctly shoulders counts as one of the slots assigned to deflection.

I thought that I had heard this but couldn't actually find it written down anywhere, so I didn't add the extra +.5 to mine, just made off the Bracers of Armour values. I thought that, well it is clothing that can sort of be associated with Armour... sort of.
Let me know Pat if you want me to add this .5, because it'll mean I have to drop the AC bonus down to +1 and will mean I have some cash left over.
Where is it written by the way so I know for future reference?

Well, we are trying to adhere to the rules, so I would say if this is the way Pathfinder does things, then we should do it that way.
One of the things I love about playing this game is I learn the rules so much better this way :)

Isaac is keen on traveling, but I do think he could be persuaded to do some looking around in The Hive. I think the rationale behind doing choice 2 first and then moving on to something else is pretty good: no travel time, intro to Sigil, likely wrapped up most quickly.
Guy Humual
|
Personally, I think 2 would be a good intro to Sigil for the newer folk unfamiliar with the setting. You can always go back to the other two later ....
This is true. Karrin is eager to please though and would happily do any of the jobs.
I think she wants to do the Urgrek job because she feels that she was instrumental in earning the job. Also Karrin is interested in meeting with Guarsimo Har'Jollek again, he spoke about doing some business in Oerth after all, but she hasn't quite figured out how to go about doing that yet. Karrin assumes that by doing work for people at Guarsimo's party they might get a good reputation and get a meeting with Guarsimo (and maybe some work).

Re: AC bonus items: Thx all! I'll go ahead and keep the coat, but base it on the CLoak (Which does allow deflection as well as rings IIRC) I'll make a note so future increases will be based on the ring/cloak and not Armor costs.
Re: Jobs: OK, META gaming, I agree, the Hive hunt sounds like fun, can probably be wrapped up quickly, gets us all an intro to Sigil, and lets the PC 's learn about each other. Gets my primary vote.
IN game- If I was in a 'normal' realm, and one guy came to hire me and said he had a load of weapons, and a second guy wanted to hire me to help defend his kingdom,... I'd be looking for a connection! In Sigil,... maybe they aren't related. There are a LOT of worlds out there,... ;P

ACK!
Re: AC bonuses on items: I found the list that gives the basic cost for types of bonuses. 'Armor' bonus is the cheapest. 'Deflection' bonus is almost 4 times as much once you get past the first +1. SO, still thinking on what i'm gonna do. Doesn't make much sense to buy armor that won;t stack with my mage armor spell. ;P
Um, can anyone tell me the book/page that the item list and it's associated bonuses/powers is in? like "Armor= Armor bonuses, Cloaks= Deflection & Save bonuses," etc. I can't seem to find it. But I remember seeing it before,...
Also: Here's an optional rule that we used in another game. (We don't have to try it here, just wanted feedback on it.)
-GAme rules= Item must be masterwork to be enchanted, and must have at least a +1 value (Armor, Weapons) before any other property can be added onto it.
-Optional Rule= Item must be Masterwork to be enchanted. BUT can be enchanted with any legal ability or bonus. Does NOT have to be +1 first. Or ever.
By the regular rules, the first magical item you will ever find is a +1 sword. This can be pretty boring. With the optional rules, you can have a flaming masterwork sword as your first magic weapon. Now, you can declare that is isn't magic for purposes of overcoming dmg reduction, as it isn't +1. (Or you can judge that it is, because it is enchanted with the flaming property.)
But once you settle that, you get a wider variety of magical weapons available at the 'legal' level.
So, what do you guys think? Like I said, I'm not begging to use it here. Mainly want feedback on it.

Hm,... Possible. That makes a bit of sense. And math-wise I can see that. (And I stink at math!)
In play I don't know. We never got that far in the game I was playing in. And that DM had declared that being 'MAgic' for purposes of overcoming damage reduction meant '+1' type of magic, not flaming, or shock or frost. SO we couldn't overcome 'DR/Magic' with a flaming longsword. But a +1 flaming longsword would! So yes, a bunch of flaming arrows would definitely be a lot cheaper this way. (One of the things I liked about it!) But not necessarily more effective in combat, at least not vs monsters with DR,...

There are a couple of articles I think you might be interested in.
1) In KQ Issue 6 (p.60), there is an article detailing 15 New Ioun Stones. I thought you might like it for Tales from the City of Opal.
2) In KQ Issue 5 (p.59), there is an article about enhancing Musical Instruments in the same fashion as Weapons, but with their own Sound themed Abilities seperate to the Weapn Abilities. I am very interested in this for enhancing Bethany's Lyre.
If you don't have the Mags let me now and I can get you the info via e-mail.
