What's the deal with all the elephants?

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

Odd question, but I just noticed that Bestiary 2 added two additional elephants that aren't hugely different to the Bestiary 1 elephants, as well as an elephant construct - I'm not sure if I am complaining exactly, just mildly perplexed.

This brings us up to a total of 6 elephants or elephant based creatures in PF2 so far

Anacus
Aolaz
Elephant
Iridescent Elephant
Mammoth
Mastodon

Is someone at Paizo just a big fan of elephants? Do the Anacus and Mastodon fill some niche that the Elephant and Mammoth don't that I am just not seeing? Am I overthinking this?

We've also got four kinds of big cats and four kinds of bears. Having a wider range of animals at higher level isn't a bad thing, and elephants are fun.

Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding! We have a winner!

Evidence of this - There are zero Bison or Buffalo in the PF2 rules and exactly ONE in all ten years of PF1 with over a dozen Elephants in that time for the 1st ed.

We have a Pachyderm fanboy quietly pushing buttons inside the purple Golem.

This lack of Ursines is Un-Bear-able!

The lack of Felines IS a Cat-astrophe!

Clearly elephants are awesome and any monster that is not an elephants is clearly ilrelphant.

But still I don't think them adding more pachyderms is irr-elephant to my games.

It's Claw-ful! A truly Fur-midable problem. Maybe it's Paw-sibile to change Un-fur-tunate Mew-sery. It's enough to give a cat an In-fur-iority complex!

Can you believe not Ivory one appreciate elephant puns? It's not like it was a Mammoth undertaking..

What isthe deal with all the dragons, 20 types in bestiary 1 alone.

I think it is fine, since there is a mechanical advantage. I am pretty sure that the summon dragon spell is the single most fleshed out summoning spell in the game. And the general versatility of dragons makes it feel like the summoner is getting bang for his buck, even at high levels.

Nope. I didn't order the creatures for the book. That was mostly Stephen Radney MacFarland. I just ordered the art for the book.

I suppose it is good to have more options at different creature levels for stuff like summon animal?

You never know when you might need to run a encounter with a army that uses elephants (cough hannibal cough). I also like to think it gives me a good idea of the scale of monsters. like how bad is it? well is it as bad as a angry elephant?

I'm just glad we finally got a hippopotamus in Bestiary 2. Hippos are the scariest herbivores!

Scarier then a good portion of carnivores too.

I'd like to point out that while picture for construct looks like elephant, the description text actually says it can look like anything since its a construct :p

"Most aolazes are built in the shape of great land-bound beasts, such as elephants, rhinoceroses, or dinosaurs. "

We're all tired of fighting giant rats. Bring on the pygmy elephants!

Only if we also get woozles.

And the ability to summon both as part of a musical number.

Is the British, I mean Brevoyish, accent mandatory?

Is THAT what happened to Choral the conqueror?

What are the odds we might see an Elephant Man PC race?

One of the funniest riffs I had was we had a Loxodon (D&D5e) Druid who used polymorph to turn into an Elephant and I stood up and went “Ah I finally remember... my final form” and just bent over and put my hands on the ground haha.

As the creative director of PF2, you have the power to make all of these things a reality.

Please do so. I never realized how badly I need elephantoms until now.

Speaking of ancestries, don't forget the centaurephant.

Was CR30 in PF1 (stats are in Mythic Realms, I think). I don't think we're ready to have anything that high in PF2 yet, since there's no conceivable PC party that wouldn't just "die instantly" in that fight and there's no reason to spend column inches on "here's how fast you die."

I don't think there'd be a discount either, since the Tarrasque went from CR25 to Level 25 in the edition switch. So a party of Tarrasques sees the Oliphant of Jandelay as more than an extreme threat.

The idea of a group of Tarrasque hunting in packs is terrifying. Then you realize their not hunting but running away from something.......

Cue me helping my brother (we're both massive bio nerds) come up with an actually reasonable statblock for hippos in a certain other system that likes to underlevel its "mundane" animals... Only to look at the PF2 bestiary and see that every tiny thing I'd mentioned was in the entry. Even the natural sunscreen, for Aroden's sake!

If you look at the description of the Biblical Behemoth, counterpart of Leviathan and Ziz, you'll just get a description of a hippo in scripture. They are quite literally mythically powerful and it's nice to see Pathfinder give them their dues.

It inspired frickin Groudon!

Oh, also elephants are cool, and if anyone says otherwise I'd be happy to take them to tusk over it. I could go on, but I should trunk-ate my message here so I don't goad anyone too much. ;)

It's all Elefant and games until it opens fire with its 88mm gun.
