Is it possible to take the above 3 feats + 1 trait to choose the Sylvan Bloodline and get an Animal Companion that is the same level as you?

EG:
Human Cleric with 14 charisma

trait: Ascendant Recollection
bonus feat Exotic Heritage (Knowledge Nature)
lvl 1 feat Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan)

Animal Companion: Tiger (will stay level 1 atm)

lvl 3 feat Boon Companion (Tiger)

From now on it will follow your level.

Is this legitimate?

So normally Eldritch Heritage wouldn't allow Sylvan bloodline, but Exotic Heritage takes care of that.

Eldritch Heritage imposes a -2 level penalty on it.
Sylvan bloodline grants you a animal companion at level-3.

So, totaling level-5. Boon companion gives you 4 level bonus.

Ascendant recollection is questionable whether it applies, since you're not actually a sorcerer but I'd probably allow it.

Especially because this is more convoluted than:
Nature Soul
Animal Ally Boon Companion

Of course, your version does offer the full animal companion list but has more requirements than the other version.

Unless you really have big plans for your domains you might better off selecting one of the domains that grants you an animal companion.

The animal companion is the arcana, and also replaces the first level power. I have no idea how that should interact with Eldritch Heritage.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In addition to being the bloodline arcana, it's definitely a bloodline power gained at 1st level, and thus should be boosted by Ascendant Recollection.

How do you get Eldritch Heritage at Level 1? Character Level 3 Required. Other than that it looks legit, don't even need to be human. Trait, L1 Feat EH, L3 Feat EH, L5 Feet Boon. I guess a bit faster than the Nature Soul Route, since need level 4 for would be L5 and L7 Feats. Decision is what level do you want the Companion or do you prefer +3 Know Nature vs +2 Know Nature and +2 Survival. That or since you want to play a Cleric, just take the Animal Domain, getting a Companion and Boon at L5 to offset the level. Less feat/trait intensive.

@Claxon
The price for it instead of the nature soul + animal ally + boon companion seems to just be a single trait. The advantage is a full druid list of creatures instead of animal ally version.

I've taken Travel and Defense domains for better spells and stuff :)

@Rhaleroad
Very true, I forgot that. So instead of online lvl 3 it's online at level 5..
This version though is with a level 8 cleric I'm playing and retraining a few feats if it's possible to get it.

No Daedalus, the price is having to have enough Charisma to qualify for the feats in the first place and also a trait. For most Clerics, chaisma is ignored as it only adds to channeling. Something that starts out good at low levels, but quickly drops in utility. Getting a cleric up to 14 charisma is in my opinion a significant investment.

Scarab Sages

Don't forget to wear Robes of Arcane Heritage! It's like Boon companion without the level cap.

There's an FAQ about animal companions and level cap, I don't recall the exact wording but IIRC the basic effect is you can't raise the effective level of the animal companion above your level.

Scarab Sages

The limit is [AC HD limit] = [Character Level + 1]. So a 5th level character can only have a 6HD animal companion (Effective AC level 7), even if they are entitled to a higher level AC.

It is in this post, but not in the ARG FAQ.

Yeah that's what I was talking about, but I remembered it incorrectly.

Thanks for the correction.

@Claxon
Hehe the 14 charisma is there because the party needs someone with people skills ;)
A few ranks in bluff, diplomacy and intimidate with +2 from cha and Circlet of Persuasion makes me want to use my cha for more battlefield control/damage

@Horselord
Hmm so it's possible to get Animal companions boosted beyond your character level (mainly around lvl 9+) because it limits the boost on the ACs hit dice and not the characters level..

(that won't be possible with my attempt afaik since you'd need eg. fav. class bonus..)

Scarab Sages

There are numerous ways to boost an Animal Companion beyond character level:

- Sylvan Sorcerer + Ascendant Recollection + Boon Companion + Robes of Arcane Heritage [CL + 4]

- Ascendant Recollection + Exotic Heritage (Knowledge Nature) + Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan) + Boon Companion + Robes of Arcane Heritage [CL + 4]

- Animal Ally and retraining or selecting a class feature that grants an Animal Companion [CL (or CL-3) + CL-4]

- Oracle favored class bonus for elf or aasimar (+1/2 to oracle level for one revelation) and apply it to Primal Companion (Lunar) or Bonded Mount (Nature). [CL + 1/2 CL]

- Or combine the last 3 by playing an elf lunar oracle with Ascendant Recollection, taking Animal Ally at level 5, take Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan), choosing the Primal Companion revelation, and wearing Robes of Arcane Heritage. When you have all this, your effective Animal Companion level is [3.5*CL - 4], so at 8th level, your Animal Companion is level 24!

Note to readers: Disregard if this isn't a PFS game, as John's rule is invented whole-cloth in that post and has no basis in any rulebook, erratum, or general FAQ.
