An Expanded NPC Codex

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

With the retirement of 1e, I find myself saddened that there was never an NPC Codex made to included non-base classes. I was wondering, however, if a. someone had went ahead and made a non-base class codex (whether in the community or a 3pp), and, failing that b. if there would be interest in making one.
Anyhow, thanks, y'all.

One if the things my company (Jon Brazer Enterprises) is working on is a "Monster Codex" II. Is an "NPC Codex" II something people are interested in?

I know it's something I'd certainly be interested in, though I cannot speak for the people at large.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

I just realized from the phrasing of my question that I'm left confused. Is it the monster book that you're more interested in, or the NPC book, or both?

Both to be completely honest! I love the monster groups in the Monster Codex, but I also love the NPC codex.

An NPC Codex with oracle, magus and alchemist builds would be fantastic.

I can't say I would care much about NPCs from the Advanced Class Guide, but NPCs from the APG would be extremely helpful to me as a GM.

As as long as I'm dreaming, NPCs using some of the prestige classes would also be great. Less of a direct use for me, but I always enjoy seeing NPCs with interesting builds, rather than simply "Sorcerer 12" or whatnot.

I would like a G.I.Joe style team, consisting of different classes (with various archetypes) in one organization with some type of theme. Countries, race or other factors like environment. 100 classes throughout Pathfinder. Paizo and Third party of course.
Is this possible? I don't know. But it's my dream. Unlimited action figures!

Don't know how to edit a post but, a book similar to Mutants and Masterminds' Freedom City.

There's an edit link next to "flag list faq reply" for one hour after posting. After that, it's gone.

I created a poll for this. Vote now.

Dale, I appreciate your willingness to listen to those of us still interested in 1E products.

I followed the link to your blog post, and read your comments, but I can't see an actual poll. Am I supposed to see a list of multiple-choice options? Just not sure where to vote.

Interesting. It's a black box with the question in an orange box. It's at the bottom of the post. Heck, give me a few moments and I'll move it to the top, right after the picture and title before the text of the post.

Edit: it's moved.

Thanks for trying that. I still can't see it, but it may be an issue with my setup. I'm using Firefox on a Mac, so there may be some kind of compatibility issue.

It would be great if someone else could try it and verify whether it's just me or a broader issue. Since the link is buried in this thread, maybe you could post a new thread dedicated to your poll? That would get you more responses and hopefully sort out this issue.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

Well what is your vote then?

NPC Codex, Monster Codex, Both, or Neither.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I "usually" have more monsters than I need especially with the template options. But interesting NPC builds take time and I tend to run urban campaigns where they come up quite often. I can never get enough of those although I do like building them myself but quite often I don't have the time during prep.

Voted in the poll and interested in the results.

As Tulio and Miguel like to say:

"Both. Both is good."

: )

I would be. There is a huge short fall in non-base class NPC's.

Jack

I use the hybrid and base classes a great deal and having them along with a mix of archetypes and prestige class would be nice to spin up and mod as needed in a campaign via a codex would be a great resource.

A nice feature is having an NPC and show it at 1st, 5th, 10th. You essentially get three NPC's in one. I forget at the moment where I first saw that but it was a nice feature...

I for one would like both, and I am *absolutely* willing to contribute to this wonderful project should it come to pass. Not bad for a Tzimisce and a Gangrel team-up, eh?

Lasombra Rulz others drools!

...also I’m totally in for at least the NPC Codex 2

Lots of classes need them stats...but here’s the thing...

Could you work with Wolfs Lair on stats for Hero Lab?

That’s where the original NPC Codex adds value to our game

I'm actually building the NPCs in Hero Lab. So I'll have the file available somehow. Exactly how, I'm not sure yet.

That makes me doubly excited for this project...any thoughts on scope?

Advanced Players Guide?
Advanced Class Guide?
Occult Adventures?

That's next week's poll on my site.

Nice...looking forward to that

Quick FYI, we're working on the phrasing so we bumped the poll to next week.

H Dale,

I gotta say I'm looking forward to the possibilities of these products. One question and a request, if I may, is this going to be available as a hard copy? And if so, what are the chances it will be available in the Pocket Edition size? I may be the only one, but I prefer the smaller size.

I can understand why some people would prefer the smaller paperback, for reasons of price and portability, but I'm a hard pass on that one. I like a full-sized gaming book.

Also, since I can't seem to view the polls on Dale's website, I'll mention that while I'd love to see both books, an expanded NPC Codex would be more useful to me. I have all the Bestiaries to work with for monsters, but not so deluged with options for NPCs.

I can't argue against that, and understand completely. Heck, if it was an option for Print-On-Demand, I'd be fine with it. I wish other publishers would offer it as well.

Coming soon...

More details coming sooner.

Thanks, Dale. Where did you get the cover art?

LPJ Design's stock art. I don't have the artist's name off hand.

Blog post with poll set for Monday where we talk about our upcoming Character Codex Subscription.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

Good day all, I posted a blog post this morning about the upcoming Book of Beasts: Character Codex Subscription. Read all about it and vote in the poll. If you are interested, let your voice be heard.

Still can't see the poll, but my top choices would be oracle, psychic, mesmerist, and hunter, in that order.

J. A. wrote:
psychic, mesmerist,

Like we said in the blog post, we're limiting our books APG, UM, and the ACG. If this is successful, well look at OA for the next book.

I missed that restriction. Sadly, the psychic and mesmerist are two of the classes I'd most be interested in having NPCs for. Apart from the hunter and slayer, I don't do much with the ACG. Just my input.

Well, you're in luck with the hunter and oracle. The hunter is currently tied for first and the oracle is holding its own.

Dale,

I just went through the PDF.

I am in the midst of running a Greyhawk Campaign on PBP and we are now in the middle of U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh and I can see where I could easily drop a few of these in has NPC's as we move forward in the campaign world. The Corsair Chaplain and the Cult Initiate are two that I will be using. My plan is to have us work through U1 to U3) and then on to A1 to A4 (Slave Lords). This will be a nice addition to reinvigorating those classic modules with some new NPC's and encounters.

Great job on the book!

As I was purchasing it I also got the Book of Beasts: Monsters of the Shadow Plane. Enjoying that as well.

Thank you. If you could leave a review, I would appreciate it.

Today, we are sharing with you a third character from the Book of Beasts: Warpriest Codex. Check out the Lich Slayer today.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

I just remembered that I have not kept this thread updated. The Book of Beasts: Character Codex is the spiritual successor to the NPC Codex. Subscribe to the series and get the final book when it is finished at the JBE Shop, DriveThruRPG, and the Open Gaming Store.

The Subscription currently includes:
* Warpriest Codex
* Magus Codex
* Witch Codex
* Hero Lab files for each of these classes.

Slayer Codex is next.

I will write out a theme build to level 20... I can then use it like a template over any NPC or monster that I choose. Any level I need them, it's all right there waiting.

I have a list of builds using the Agent of the Grave prestige class. A lot of the builds on the list do not have every feat filled out, most don't have races assigned to them, they exist to be adapted as needed.

A perfect example of this is the Dirge Bard I had written down. It takes 10 levels in Dirge Bard before you qualify for Agent of the Grave... so I had the loose outline for a Dirge Bard-10/Agent of the Grave-5 on my list. Later, I discovered a monster called the Masked Murderer... a Ghoul Dirge Bard-8... how perfect. Now my Dirge Bard/Agent of the Grave is a Ghoul and the Masked Murder has 15 class levels instead of 8... a match made in heaven.

I have lots of lists, of similar concepts... android lich robot army... pirates... gestalted classes matching racial archetypes... gestalted classes offering full BAB all good saves and 9th level casting...

I enjoy making gestalt monsters, too (like the Gorgotaur or combining Harpies and Sirens).

Gotta have fun NPC's, and have fun making NPC's... they are what you get to play with, so they might as well have fun abilities. I use NPC's as a way to explore classes/concepts I will never get a chance to play as a character in a game.
