If you have exotic weapon proficiency katana can you wield it 2 handed?

So this may be a silly question but if you have martial weapon proficiency you can wield a katana 2 handed and it states you need exotic to wield it one handed but doesn't mention anything the other way around. So if you have exotic weapon proficiency katana are you able to wield it 1 or 2 handed depending on what you want to do at the time or do you only know how to wield it one handed?

Dark Archive

Yes. You can normally weild 1 handed weapons with 2 hands. You don't need it to call it out.

Rapiers and i think whips call out that they can't be 2 handed.

Well, the feat states.

Exotic Weapon Proficiency wrote:

Choose one type of exotic weapon, such as the spiked chain or whip. You understand how to use that type of exotic weapon in combat, and can utilize any special tricks or qualities that exotic weapon might allow.

Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You make attack rolls with the weapon normally.

Normal: A character who uses a weapon with which he is not proficient takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls.

Special: You can gain Exotic Weapon Proficiency multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of exotic weapon.

Since the primary benefit of the feat is to allow you to wield the weapon normally. This means your character knows how to wield it 2 handed. The feat also allows you to make use of any "tricks" or "qualities" of the weapon. Which in this case is knowing how to use it one handed.

So, if you have gained exotic proficiency with it you can use it either way. Even if you otherwise lack proficiency with martial weapons.

Ok thanks.

Do you get 1.5x str modifier if you wield a 1h weapon 2h? I think so.

Except for light weapons, which are too small to be two handed. The strength multiplier is all about hands used, not the weapon itself.

Of course its a matter of if you have claws or something that would give you an offhand attack in addition to the one handing.

One can. Know that the end result tends to be quite a bit less effective than wielding a two handed reach weapon in both hands. This is true both in Pathfinder and in real life.

FYI: Historic warriors (e.g. Samurai) usually carried a sidearm, such as a katana, as an Everyday Carry item. When facing battle they would also carry a cumbersome Primary Battle Weapon. Nipponese warriors mostly carried the spear, or Yari, when facing actual battle. Don't make the mistake of going to battle with just a sidearm. Spear is to Sword as Rifle is to Pistol.

It was widely acknowledged that a spear is a better weapon than a katana, except that spears are inconvenient to carry. The katana was carried in case the spear broke or was lost. It's certainly possible for a swordsman to defeat a spearman, but the odds strongly favor the spearman. Traditional armed martial arts, such as Kenjutsu, recognize the superiority of Sojutsu spear fighting [Youtube].

Well, until you get to the Edo period, when the wars were over, and it was all about dueling, traditionally done with the katana.

This games not set on Earth. This game doesnt have an Edo period. This game doesnt care about how much room your spear needs. It doesnt care about a spear breaking because you used it to kill too much that day.

It's just a game and your character is not Japanese or have to pretend it is, OP. Play how you want to.
