Dwarf Ancestry Feat

Creating a Character

My character is a Dwarf Fighter, I'm trying to choose my ancestry feat.

I was looking at weapon familiarity (Dwarf) and it says I become trained in battle axe, pick and warhammer.

Since I'm a fighter already I'm proficient in all of these. Does that mean I'm 'trained' in these weapons already?

Fighter is already an expert in all simple and martial weapons. So does taking this feat change this? To what?

Could someone clear this up for me, is there any point in taking this feat? Am I already 'trained' for these 3 weapons since I'm a fighter?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So the only benefit to those ancestral weapon familiarity feats for a class that already gets proficiency in all martial weapons is the line:

Quote:
you treat martial dwarf weapons as simple weapons and exotic dwarf weapons as martial weapons.

Since Fighters get lower proficiency in exotic weapons than martial weapons, a feat like this is a good choice for someone who wants to use an exotic weapon associated with an ancestry (like a Dwarven Waraxe.) Otherwise it's not worth taking if you are already trained in martial weapons, since it's redundant with features granted by your class.

I was planning on going either a greatsword or a dwarven waraxe.

As a fighter I'm already an expert in the greatsword. And it appears I would only be 'trained' in the dwarven waraxe.

Is there a way I could 'catch up' to be on par with my greatsword as it's ahead one right now with 'expert'.

If I get weapon familiarity would that dwarven waraxe be an 'expert' for my guy, and such on par with any other martial weapon I could use?

So if you want to use an exotic weapon on a fighter, you either want the level 1 ancestry feat "weapon familiarity" in case it is an ancestral weapon, or the level 6 Fighter Feat "Exotic Weapon training". Either of those would give the fighter the same proficiency in the exotic weapon of choice as they would in martial weapons.

(Note that the fighter feat in question has been updated to make it work correctly).

As PC says, Weapon Familiarity is definitely worth it if you want the Dwarven Waraxe, as it does make it on par with your martial weapon proficiency.

And the Dwarven Waraxe is a really solid weapon too.

So taking weapon familiarity will give me 'expert' status for the dwarven waraxe? And if I didn't take it I would have 'trained' status?

Fighters are default trained in exotic weapons, so with no feats you would be trained with the Dwarven Waraxe. Weapon Familiarity will allow you to treat the Dwarven Waraxe as a martial weapon (since it's a dwarf weapon), so you would have expert proficiency in it (as you have expert proficiency in all martial weapons.)

At 3rd Level you get the class feature "Weapon Mastery" which has you choose a weapon group and gain Master proficiency in all simple and martial weapons in that group. If you have Weapon Familiarity, and you choose Axes as your group you would then have Master proficiency with the Dwarven Waraxe.

Normally your proficiency with exotic weapons tops out at Expert, so it's recommended that a fighter who wants to use an exotic weapon takes a feat (either weapon familiarity if it's one of your ancestry's weapons, otherwise the level six feat) to be able to treat it as martial.
